Set phasers to renewal: CBS All Access has ordered a second season of Star Trek: Discovery, TVLine has learned.
News of Discovery‘s Season 2 pick-up comes just five weeks into the show’s freshman run. An episode count has not yet been disclosed for the sophomore season.
“In just six episodes, Star Trek: Discovery has driven subscriber growth, critical acclaim and huge global fan interest for the first premium version of this great franchise,” CBS Interactive president and COO Marc DeBevoise said in a statement. “This series has a remarkable creative team and cast who have demonstrated their ability to carry on the Star Trek legacy. We are extremely proud of what they’ve accomplished and are thrilled to be bringing fans a second season of this tremendous series.”
Following in the footsteps of fellow streaming services, CBS All Access has not divulged viewership for Star Trek: Discovery, other than to say its launch fueled record subscriber sign-ups in a single day, week and month.
Discovery is released weekly, with new episodes premiering Sundays at 8:30 pm ET on CBS All Access. Following its midseason finale on Nov. 12, the series will return with six more installments beginning in January.
Are you psyched about the early Star Trek: Discovery renewal?
Maybe by the time S2 starts, the S1 episodes that are still buffering will be fixed.
Yeah, I hit that problem too!!! I thought it was something with my connection. Yeah, CBS step it up !!!
No kidding. I’ve tried everything to make the lag better just in case it was on my end – pausing for a while after every commercial (works for about 30 seconds), different platforms (PS4, PC, doesn’t make a difference), resetting my router and cable modem to clear out the cache – nothing works. It reminds me of Netflix around 2007. They were streaming Dexter the day after it aired on Showtime. It was their big get. But between 4-9pm, it was just impossible to watch. CBS All Access is worse, because it doesn’t seem to be time related. And Star Trek is the worst offender. The Good Fight has some issues, too, but nothing like Star Trek. I wonder if they’re pushing HD for Trek or something, since it seems to have the lag so much worse.
Never had a problem, all the shows I watch on there stream clear from beginning to end no matter whenn I watch them.
Here’s hoping they fix the mistakes they made with the Klingons
It’s sort of hard to fix them, I mean what’s the explanation?
More than likely genetic engineering to restore their “true Klingon selves” after Phlox left them as hybrids a century earlier.
Meh. The show is ok, but can’t really exist in the same universe as the original series. It’s not the worst Star Trek, but it’s not great either.
Like it or not it does exist in the prime universe
You can call something a goose all you want, but if it keeps quacking like a duck…
Quack honk honk quack honk
Does it really? I breaks an awful lot of cannon if its supposed to be set in the prime universe, starting with just about everything about the Klingons.
Why would the Klingons want to look like humans, which is the state Phlox left them in a century earlier in their last appearance on Enterprise? They wouldn’t, it makes no sense, specially when they’re embracing a philosophy to “remain Klingon”, a goal they cannot achieve as long as their DNA is corrupted by human Augment DNA.
If the show made a misstep, it was in not opening with the Klingons undergoing such metamorphosis as part of the main plot.
Who says they want to look like humans? From what we know they did look like humans in this time period. That is cannon. Even if it wasn’t they look nothing like any Klingons we’ve seen before. Their behavior also seems off. When they talk they sound more like they’re gargling water then they sound like Klingons speaking Klingon in past shows and movies. You can try and dress them up all you want but these Klingons suck. Another issue is this new propulsion drive, that basically always them to travel at least as fast a Q. We know nothing like that exists in the TOS or TNG, DS9 or Voyager. They’re going to need to explain how they have that now but it’s not longer around in the future, nor has there ever been any mention of it in the future. Simply put there is way too much in this show that conflicts with prime universe Trek. It being a different Trek universe would make much more sense.
The reason they looked more like humans in the original series was explained in Enterprise as being a consequence of exposure to the Augment virus.
Klingons who want to “remain Klingon” would not want that crap in their genome.
C A N O N, not cannon.
They sound this way because they’re speaking in their language, not English. When they do speak English, it sounds no different than any Klingon before them.
Vulcans have been shown to speak in their own tongue when on their own, why would Klingons be any different?
It’s not a different Trek universe, it is the prime timeline. Are people really this enslaved to the production values of a low budget TV series from the 60’s that they think that modern productions set in that same era such as Enterprise would look that cheap?
And yes, they have to explain why the secret Starship with the one of a kind secret engine does not exist in the future. Maybe it’s because it requires human beings to make it work and Starfleet refuses to do it because eugenics are illegal on account of the war and all?
WATCH the show.
That should say such as Discovery, not such as Enterprise.
Actually it was originally explained by Worf in a DS9 episode, when they went back in time to TOS. He specifically mentioned it was a time in their history they didn’t talk about. We also know from TOS and DS9 that the Klingons in TOS eventually looked like Klingons again, given a few of the same Klingons appeared in both series. That means the correction happened after TOS. Those affected Klingons were obviously high ranking Klingons at the time of TOS, ship captains and all, which blows your contention of not wanting to look like that out of the water. It obviously wasn’t a choice. Furthermore these Klingons look nothing like the Klingons in Enterprise or TNG or DS9 or any prime universe movies. And no they do not sound like other Klingons of the past, they sound like they they’re speaking Klingon under water. They don’t enunciate like past Klingons speaking Klingon. As for the propulsion drive, regardless of why the drive doesn’t exist in the future it makes no sense that it has never been mentioned. You would think something that significant would have been mentioned in the future. You can try to put the square box in the round hole all you want, but simply put the series does not fit in the prime universe, regardless of the PTB saying it does (too many contradictions). It’s a decent enough show on it’s own, it just doesn’t fit in the prime universe, it feels much more like the Abrams movies.
No, it was not “explained by Worf”, it was turned into a JOKE by Worf. The explanation came in Enterprise. To believe that Klingons would want to remain hybridized with humans makes no sense.
It’s a SECRET project. Are you WATCHING the show? This drive is akin to the cloaking device from TNG’s Pegasus, a SECRET. No, it would not be mentioned in future episodes.
The contradictions exist only in the minds of people who expect shows set in this era to resemble a poorly-made TV series from the 60’s. This show is not built on that one, it builds on the foundation laid by the more recent series, Enterprise.
*future series, not future episodes.
“The contradictions exist only in the minds of people who expect shows set in this era to resemble a poorly-made TV series from the 60’s. This show is not built on that one, it builds on the foundation laid by the more recent series, Enterprise.”
Except for the fact that Enterprise went out of their way to make a ship from that era look like it was supposed to *Points at In a Mirror, Darkly parts 1 and 2*
We KNOW how Klingons of this era are supposed to look. They don’t look like that. Plus, these Klingons truly lack the joie de vivre every other Klingon we’ve ever seen. Some of them could be downright jovial. These Klingons have yet to show that side. Everytime someone tries to suggest it’s ok for them to make changes “because the original series looks horrible* I just want to hit them over the head with a copy of The Teachings of Surak
And had The Original Series not looked like crap, the Defiant on Enterprise would have looked much better.
The problem is that people confuse fanboy adherence to a low-budget TV series from the 1960’s with adherence to what Trek is.
A more proper example of technology in the age of Kirk is what appears in Wrath of Khan, not what appears in TOS.
For instance, we know from the first movie that the Enterprise underwent a retrofit, which is how the sets were changed to become the ones seen in the first three movies.
The same cannot be said of other ships like Reliant, for instance, which looked more like Movie Enterprise did than TV Series Enterprise did.
Do people think Starfleet retrofitted every Starship in the fleet? Of course not. That was merely a gimmick the first movie used to explain why the interior of the Enterprise no longer looked like a cake puked over the walls.
Google “Cadet Training” “Memory Alpha”, you will find a listing of episodes from previous Trek TV series that have elements that informed current episodes of Discovery.
My big issue with how the Klingons talk is that they don’t sound like Klingons speaking Klingon. They sound like somebody reading a list of phonetics. Their speech is jerky, without flow. They really need to practice their lines until they sound like they’re fluent.
.
Also, the tech is better than we saw in TNG, DS9, or VOY, nevermind TOS. The holographic communication, etc. I understand a lot of that is behind-the-scenes technology improvements of today vs. 20, 30, 50 years ago… but when the in-show technology of the prequel is better than what came before (they had no holodeck on the Enterprise, but they have it on Discovery. Oh, but the Discovery is a super-advanced brand-spanking-new experimental ship, of course they have stuff that the Enterprise, being older, doesn’t have! But… they had holographic communication on the Shenzou, which is even older. And how come the Enterprise didn’t get all this spiffy tech in the refit? Or how ’bout the brand-new SOTA Enterprise-A that was built, what, 15-20 years after Discovery?) I can put up with stuff looking sleeker because *our* technology has improved. But I have serious issues with prequel tech looking far more advanced than was available to characters in TOS or the sequels.
What “came before” was that Pike literally had a massive television set with an itty bitty screen in his cabin.
What came before is that on his way to said cabin he walked by a man and a woman in bathing suits and flip flops.
What came before is Klingons that looked like Fu Manchu-type caricatures with long thing mustaches they could twirl as they committed evil deeds.
Lastly, what came before was Pike disparaging Colt for being a woman.
Those things are no longer relevant now.
There are many possible reasons why other ships lacked spore drives, such as that only one will ever exist, or because they will never be able to make it work without a human pilot.
The existence of holographic technology is due to Archer and his crew encountering aliens that possessed such technology.
What we saw in previous Trek, from The Cage to First Contact, is akin to the first timeline in Back To The Future in which Biff is a bully and George is his punching bag.
Anything after First Contact, both in the TNG movies and remaining TV series, including Enterprise and Discovery, takes place on a timeline akin to the second and fourth timelines from BTTF 1 and 3, in which George is an assertive published author, Biff is his car maintenance person, and Clayton ravine has been renamed Eastwood ravine, hence the differences in technology.
I wonder how there going to explain how the Enterprise lead by captain Pike runs into futuristic Klingons, and not the Klingons from TOS with captain Kirk.
Well, they’re not futuristic Klingons. They have more in common with the primitive Klingon Worf turned into in Genesis, an episode of The Next Generation.
Really, what better way to cleanse their genome of the Augment virus than to regress it to its more primitive form without losing their higher brain functions and other evolutionary advancements could there be?
We know they’ll be cured by the time of The Motion Picture, which is like 30 or 40 years from when Discovery began, but it won’t be like flipping a switch, there has to be a process.
Also, I think it’s foolish of the audience to judge how all Klingons look based on our limited view of their race, which has focused mainly on the ruling class and few warriors.
At this moment in canon Klingon society should be broken into two or three casts; those unaffected by the Augment virus, those affected by it, and those like the ones seen in Discovery, who are mainly their rulers, i.e. the one percent, the oligarchs.
I am so happy about this. All the negative comments from so called fans saying the show is rubbish. I knew it was going to make it to a second season. I’m here to enjoy Star trek, not be so dang critical of a show that i can’t enjoy it
I love it and I’m a lifetime Trek fan. I love all the versions. I love that they are all a little different, too. My personal fav is DS9. Discovery is great. I like the different focus, on someone who is such an outsider to this world, but was once part of it. I like that they jumped right into a series wide plot, rather than starting so episodic and gradually moving into that territory when they realized it made for richer story lines. I like the characters. It’s just entertaining. I honestly don’t really care if it “fits with canon” or whatever people say. I find that more distracting anyway, since so often the things that are supposed to be in the same universe are riddled with plot inconsistencies that have to be explained away in feats of narrative acrobatics. It’s enough of Trek that it feels familiar without being so much that it feels like a copy. I’m glad it’s getting a second season.
I’m with you Megan, DS9 was my favorite. Serialized storytelling is generally more cerebral than episodic is. Discovery is finally getting into it’s groove. The characters are flawed and developing, not cliched Mary Sue’s. I’m excited and just hope we get it back before 2019 lol!
Another DS9 fan here. I think maybe those of us who enjoyed the darker side of Star Trek we saw in that show were always going to love this one.
Discovery is great and is getting even better every week. And a couple of members of my family have even been watching since TOS in the 60s and they adore it too. It’s an awesome show.
I’m very happy for the cast, crew and creative team – their passion, commitment and talent are clearly evident. As for myself, I’m still warming to it, but I do think it’s good, and I believe that the success of any good Star Trek incarnation is always good for the long-term health of the franchise as a whole. A one-and-done season would have been disastrous – like it or not, this is the only official Star Trek coming out right now – all the Horta eggs are in this basket!
To that point, I still think that CBS’s “All Access” (only access!) ploy in the US is abhorrent, especially since Netflix picked up the total production costs and thus is the distributor for much of the world. Combine that with CBS’ treatment of fan films like Axanar and Paramount’s slow-draw approach to greenlighting a fourth “Kelvin-verse” film, it’s still an uncertain time for Star Trek.
For me this series has as much to do with TOS and TNG as The Orrville does.
Enjoy it if you like I’m out.
I enjoy this series. The personalities are interesting, the depth of character they are giving the Klingons and the Federation make this series interesting. No one is squeaking clean and perfect.
It’s really hard to see how CBS has with held such a coveted series from the trek masses to suck as much money as they can from us! It’s not enough that we pay for cable prices, but now CBS is making us pay additional fees to few it on my COMPUTER? It’s bad enough I pay extra for Netflix, which it said was available there, but it’s not yet? Thanks CBS and STAR TREK writers. A trekky from back in 60`s thru today.
It’s $6 a month… thats not exactly highway robbery
And you can easily cancel and restart in between new episodes. People just need to get a grip. This is the future of television. Pretty soon more networks will start doing this; Disney is already planning their own service.
Yep the future is $5-10 a month for every channel. That adds up really quick.
I’m waiting for the whole season to be online then I’ll subscribe for a month, binge the whole season, cancel the service and do it all over again. It’s cheaper that way.
Or wait for the DVD to be released and borrow it from the library for free.
What Marc said.
This really is how it will be going forward. As traditional TV viewership continues to plummet, networks and studios will always look for new ways to monetize the product since so many people are cutting the cord. This is just the beginning.
Cool. Here’s hoping season 2 is better.
Happy! It’s not perfect, but definitely the best produced / written space oper of the past several years.
I think I’m going to stay off the youtube reviews. They’re spending too much time on the cannon and not asking plot questions. Like why is Lorca so invested in Michael? Who is this shifty “human” that survived on a prisoner ship? What’s going on with the mirror reality? Instead people are doing character to character comparison and complaining about Sonequa’s acting which feels rooted in personal bias over her actual performance. I remember the same thing happening to Stana Katic.
Woohoo.
The show is top notch. It has a top-budget movie quality to each episode. The acting is superb, and the story is exciting and engaging. I hope it sticks around for years to come!
Wait – so after months and months of delays, CBS is breaking the debut season in half? Ridiculous. Is this the first we’re hearing about that? I despise when networks do this with shows in their first season – it almost always does harm, especially if it was unplanned narratively.
I was also contemplating joining CBS All Access over Christmas and watching with my family who won’t watch on their own, but not for half a season.
Split season was announced a while ago.
How can it harm it when it does not rely on ratings for its sustainability?
Let CBS reveal the actual numbers of new subscribers who did so to get access to the new version of Star Trek and then we can decide how significant it is or not.
I’m a lifelong Trekker, and I mostly like the series … but I HATE just being told to just lump the completely out-of-canon way the Klingons are portrayed/presented. Explain it or fix it, please. I’m not walking away in a huff on that one point, but it would be a much better show (and portend an ability to iron out some of the other wrinkled writing on the show) if they could take the care to do that.
Sorry, but my phasers been stuck on “whatever” since about five minutes into episode one.
Hopefully in season 2 they will actually do a show that remotely resembles Star Trek.
A bit surprised. I’m a long ways from hooked.
Well if it’s going to be around I’ll at least catch up, I’d left it alone the last two eps.
The show is complete DOG TURD.
CRAP acting
Crap costumes
Crap Klingons.. or should we call them LOBSTERS!!
Its design makes it look more futuristic than TNG, even though it is set before KIRK!!
The whole MICHAEL thing is an absolute insult to SPOCK as it DUMPS on his legacy and history.
The scrip writers and effects team should be fired then imprisoned!!
And globally its not doing that great… In America it might be doing well…. BUT GLOBALLY its not.
The ORVILLE outside America is doing better.
So shove this show up your arse as it stinks
Classy.
Love this show! Tons of easter eggs. Klingon facial features i.e. original series vs next generation and eugenics which comes up in voyager. True diehards will see the updated series as not being in conflict with the other series or movies. Two episodes and you’re hooked. Klingons are eating and pillaging humans! Totally explains the animosity in all the previous series.
Boycott this!! there are fans who can’t afford the extra cost and their monthly bills.
The klingons on Discovery speak with a southern accent and the orginal series they spoke with a northern accent so its no different than english…. hope that clears it up for people.
I am a Star Trek junkie, I watched all the series, seen all the movies and Honestly, I have tried so hard to find a place in my heart for “Discovery”. It just doesn’t work on any level. I wouldn’t spend $1.00 to rent it let alone $6. bucks. It reminds me of the Jaws franchise, they needed to let it die when it was good. This iteration really tarnishes the name “Star Trek”. I will really be surprised if it survives the second season.
Why? This is the most awful Star trek to ever exist including Enterprise…Just plain DUMB..
I understand where you’re coming from. I like some parts, others meh
