Bulgaria Welcomes Nurses Acquittal in Slander Lawsuit

Bulgarian politicians and relatives of the five nurses imprisoned in Libya welcomed their acquittal in a slander case on Sunday.

"The court's ruling is a positive step. Even though the verdict is not final and can be appealed, it gives hope for a just outcome of the suit against our compatriots," Bulgarian President Georgi Parvanov said in a statement.

The five Bulgarian nurses have been in detention since 1999 on charges of deliberately infecting 426 children with HIV. A Libyan court has sentenced them to death at a retrial that ended last year.

The nurses have signed confessions, which they later claimed were extracted under duress, having been subjected to torture. Eight jailors subsequently filed a lawsuit for slander.

"The important one is the main lawsuit against the nurses. Today's acquittal is a positive development and is another proof that the nurses are innocent," deputy foreign minister Feim Chaushev said.

The relatives of the nurses, quoted in the Bulgarian media, were happy with the outcome, sending messages of encouragement to their family members.
