This perfume was a scent I've followed ever since a child, my mother introduced me to Avon and I became obsessed. The warmness of the amber is intoxicating and the whole scent is heavy but "mute" (only way I can describe it) but not too much to the point of smelling powdery or fresh. It's soft and feminine, my favorite amongst the collection and I honestly believe it can be used for any season.

I tried this some 10 years ago and I remember I adored the scent but it was too weak and not durable. I never repurchased for that reason. As I am constantly on the search for nostalgic white floral bombs, recently I came across this again and read many reviews about how long-lasting and powerfully projecting it was. So I decided to give it a second chance. Maybe there is a difference in each batch they produce? Or could it be that this is the only perfume Avon improved in quality instead of ruining? Nope. Unfortunately, I stand with my first opinion. Yes, the scent is hypnotizing, sweet white/yellow floral. I love ylang-ylang and there is plenty of that. Similar to Poeme and Amarige, but much more affordable and easier to find. But, alas. If I want to smell anything at all, I have to spray really, really generously and reapply every 3 hours, and it's still mostly just a skin scent, like wearing a rich perfumed body cream. It's also quite annoying that this is one of the very few perfumes Avon doesn't have in a mini version, bc those mini 10 ml bottles are very practical to carry in your makeup purse, they give you a chance to test wear a perfume before buying the whole thing, and usually, they are more intense than the regular size bottles. Maybe, Rare Gold was never successful enough for them to make a mini version? Anyway, I suppose I won't be buying this again, which is a pity bc the scent is exactly what I like. Rare Pearls remains the only one of the Rare collection that I consider a great find with performance good enough to be worth repurchasing.
Edit: I discovered a way to make this more durable and noticeable: by layering it with a few drops of natural ylang-ylang essential oil. In the beginning, the scent is very sharp and annoying but it settles nicely. This way it lasts for about 5-6 hours and leaves a gentle trail, which is totally ok for the price range.

UnearthlyApothecary

Reminds me of Diamonds and Emeralds which I love and also Far Away Gold. In the 90s there was a slew of these amazing big bombastic white floral and peach/vanilla scents. Some were spicier and had a more oriental vibe while others were just more of a fruity floral. Rare Gold is the fruity floral variety. If you are a fan of white/yellow florals and peach you can’t go wrong, it smells like a million bucks and has amazing throw and longevity. Vintage is definitely best with this one and the older bottles are still dirt cheap on eBay. A bargain gem especially now that vintages of many similar scents like Poeme have gotten so ridiculously expensive.

Füruzan

It is quite gold in terms of its packaging and aldehydic structure which creates a nostalgic taste. I can call it as the No5 of the Avon. It is very strong. Even one spray on my wrist last more than 5-6 hours.

MRaspberry

Ordered this because i read that it's a dupe of the original Champagne that later changed name to Yvresse. That was my mans favorite perfume on women in the 90s (50 years old now). He says it's on point from what he remembers from the beginning.
I didn't know of it back then since I can't compare but I like Rare Gold.
For me it's a little bit soapy but boozy peach. Lily of the valley in the background and surrounded with a really soft musk. From the beginning a more fizzy peach but dries down to soapy lily-musk somewhere about 30 minutes / an hour.

Edit: the peach appeard sometime later, don't know when. Noticed it a couple hours later and it was a really soft version of the first first hours wear. So, about three, four hours in I totally adore this!

Marta_Regina

Warm, embracing, long-lasting, and at a very good price. I generally like perfumes from 90s, these smell like a classic, safe-buy scent. As far as I know, the original bottle was hanged since 1995, that's a pity, the previous one was more appealing to me.

saharabdulrahmman

I used to wear this perfume for many years. It is heavy and long-lasting.
It is a good choice for an independent lady in a party or a gathering.

Sailor D. Belle

it smells like old homemade soap. I passed it on, definitely an old lady's perfume. Nothing fancy about it

soapaddict

Reminds me of Paco Rabanne frag DNA.
Super rich and luxurious,even opulent.
Love it!

My mum wore the OG Avon Rare Gold when it was first released. Before that, she spent the last 80s and early 90s earring Poison. While I haven't smelled the original Rare Gold since I was a kid, the scent of similar perfumes instantly transports me back to being a kid watching my mum get ready for work right before she gave me my cuddle goodbye for the day. You know that smell - it's the smell of your mum's perfume and her warmth when she wraps you up in a cuddle.

The original Rare Gold was white floral heavy (from memory), and it's the perfume that started my lifelong love of white floral perfumes. Some people would say this perfume is a bit heavy, old-fashioned and more suited for nighttime wear, but if you love white florals the way I do, this perfume is a delightful cheapie (especially if you can get a bottle of the original fragrance that was released in the nineties).

I inherited my mom's perfumes when she retired, and Rare Gold is one that I associate very strongly with her. I remember many, many evenings where she came home from work smelling like this perfume. It's warm, assertive without being aggressive, and comes across kind of classy despite its humble origins. Just like Mom. I haven't worn it yet, but sometimes I take it out and smell it just for the nostalgia trip. Reminds me of simpler times.

SundayGirl07

I do really like this one but I will say the musk is a sharp musk. To the point where if you spray it too close to your neck, it could make you start coughing. The overall smell is not bad at all. Very pretty and clean like a luxury soap or body oil but I do recommend spraying the crook of your elbow, wrists or further down on clothing so you can get whiffs of it and not the full fragrance head on because head on is a bit much. I'm not sure how old the people are saying this is a mature smell for older women but I'm 33 and I'd wear it. Then again, I also like 90's florals like 5th Avenue.

pinotos802

The aldehydic alcoholy note is really strong in this one. Elegant and way too mature honestly. I see it more suited for an older woman with appreciation for vintage fragrances.

lanuitresor9

Nah smells vintage and sharp, too strong somehow

este96

I said I’d renew my review if anything changed, and it has! This rare gold has move into a like for me! I add a bit of amber/ sandalwood & it reminds me of an old favorite , YLS YVRESS(Champagne) ! Who knew! Peachy light amber delight!

este96

Well, blind bought this about a year ago....sprayed on paper & a scarf. Not bad, but haven't worn it yet because I cant get past the smell of over-ripe apple thats been left in a lunch box for days.... ehhh....but ...I'm keeping it around in case I smell it one day & it's magically changed;)

Gisela1978

This little gem got me 2 compliments in a day, which never happened to me before (except for Gloria Vanderbilt). More than projecting, it kind of radiates around you, keeping you in a golden, peachy, sweet cloud for hours with a 4-5 sprays wear. One of the colleagues that complimented me said: it smells warm. A winner in my book, and so inexpensive too.

Mi2001

A nice scent you just have to give it time. At first, I felt the alcohol in it is too much but after a while I didn't feel that anymore. it is good

MediaevalWench

I have the Rare Gold from the release in 1995. I found it (and a treasure trove of others) that I forgot about, having blocked off the shelves with boxes.
The perfumes on the shelves, at the time, I classed as "meh" perfumes, the ones I didn't think much of 20+ years ago.
I sprayed it and it hasnt spoiled. I always keep my perfume bottles in their boxes, and away from sunlight. The perfume is deep, not screechy, warm and definite peach aroma. The notes all mingle together really well.
Its made its way into my bedroom for frequent spraying.
Before I found this bottle, I ordered the newer bottle of Rare Gold from my Avon rep, as its in the UK December book. It will be interesting to see if it smells the same as the original. I will post the review when it's delivered.

Lovaloo

The aldehydes paired alongside the juicy calone "peach" top note give me a fruity champagne impression in the opening. The heart is indolic florals. I agree with the community consensus, it's primarily ylang-ylang and tuberose, but the jasmine and orange flower do a lot to soften the texture. The base is classic Avon: a powdery blend of amber, sandalwood, vanilla, and some musks. It paints a warm and fuzzy picture in autumnal hues.

I agree with those who say it smells more expensive than it is. Most Avon perfumes smell like cheaper, more generic versions of designer releases, but in this situation scaling the perfume down a few notches is desirable. Rare Gold is meant to imitate the larger-than-life amber florals of the 1990s. Think of Poeme, Classique, Amarige, Tresor, etc. All of those perfumes are explosive, very difficult for me to wear (the only 90s amber florals I can abide at present are 24 Faubourg, Organza, and Sublime). This budget dupe is softer, smoother, and less sweet, but it's still distinctive and it lasts a long time.

I do not think it smells modern but it's a sophisticated and pretty floral perfume, vintage in a more approachable way. If you like peach bellini give this one a try. Good value for $20. Definitely among the better Avon perfumes I've tried, I recommend buying a vintage fan bottle.

lemuelsy

Oh wow! It is indeed a Ylang-ylang scent and it’s perfectly blended with the peach. I don’t really see this as grandma scent it’s more like a mature classy elegant woman in her yellow satin dress drinking her sweet iced peach drink. The sweetness of this perfume is also just the right amount to not smell like a juvenile teenager scent. I also washed my hands a few times and it still lingers on my wrist. Overall this was a great purchase for me as its long lasting and smells good imo.

SuciYatt

Was hoping for the tuberose to shine as I am a tuberose lover but all I got was LUX bar soap all the way from top to base notes.
One initial spray made me sick, heavily head inducing. Badly strong soapy scent that is nauseating.
Really wanted to love or at least like it for all the positive reviews but unfortunately this is a total pass for me.
For tuberose lovers, get Avon TODAY if you are looking for Avon rare gems. The tuberose is amazingly beautiful. It's my only fav Avon fragrance that I can't never get enough of.

DebWT

I have used this fragrance a lot thru the years since it came out. I can't tell you how many people asked me what I was wearing. Not too strong or weak, day and night beautiful and sexy. I love the opening and for me the dry down is more of a light floral. One spray for day, two for evening.

msamber86

Someone in the YSL Champagne reviews said if you want a better and fizzier version of that perfume to try Rare Gold.

I agree that this smells like peach Bellini. It is fizzy, a little on the alcohol side, and bit juicy sweet. I normally don’t like alcohol leaning perfumes, but I like this one. It’s not too heavy. It just helps bring a new dimension to the sweet fruits in the opening. Once the fizziness drops it becomes peach, gardenia, sandalwood and that is heaven.

It makes me think of summer. You get brunch with the girls and then take a walk through the neighborhood as flowers are in bloom. It’s really lovely.

ThatGothBBW

I can't describe this besides a very golden floral fragrance, with some light fruitness. It's very heady on the white florals, especially with the gardenia and orange blossom. It's got a slight vintage quality to it, but definitely not to the extent of Elizabeth Taylor vintage. Like her fragrances often have. This is very thick floral based fragrance, with a touch os musk, and some very light fruity aspects.

You have to like heavy white florals fragrances to enjoy this.

Feliz92

I love this scent. First I thought it smelled really grandma, but then I started to love it more and more I dont think it smell old lady. It smells classy and elegant. So bad the fragrance only stick 2 hours on the skin. But it only costed 10$ so I can spray every other 2 hours more. Stil a gorgeous parfume and would buy it again because it smells so GOOD. better than rare pearls, gold have more intense smell luxurious.. Pearl smell more like burned gum

VivantRouge

For me it is a mature lady scent, she could be a teacher or an office worker. It is good value as the performance is quite good, just doesn't work for me. It is vintage, little synthetic, not really wearable for me, but I would gladly gift it to a woman that is 55+

PerfumedParrot

I’ve got the original formula with the fancy triangular lid.

As usual I was hoping that this would be a good alternative to Gucci Accenti, which it’s not at all, so don’t get sent down this rabbit hole.

I like the peach but there’s a sparkling Bellini element from the aldehydes (which I usually love) but here it’s just too fizzy and effervescent like a dissolvable vitamin C.

All-in-all I’m disappointed as this isn’t the vintage syrupy peach powerhouse that I was hoping for. It’s underwhelming, flimsy and smells budget.

Ivory_g

Grabbed this on a sale for less than 10$. Smells like gum.

spaghettibuns

I am basing this review on my 90's experience and memory. My mom worked as a hair dresser and she brought this home from someone at her work who sold Avon. This stuff was GREAT! We went through bottles of it. Took baths in it. We all loved it. My mother, my sister and me. Fast forward to a couple of months ago and i had gotten a sample spray of Michael Kors Gorgeous in the mail from a facebook offer. I sprayed it and thought it smelled VERY familiar but i couldnt place it. After a couple of days of contemplation i mentioned this to my sister who immediately said Yeah That stuff smells like Rare Gold to me! I said THATS IT! So, now i bathe in Gorgeous regularly LOL. The 90s version of Rare Gold will never be forgotten by us as we all loved it and we love the memory of it. And i feel like i get to relive it every time i spray Gorgeous. Mmmmmm

Sailorbelle

This smells like household soap and flowers .This is for a mature lady, a serious kind of lady

Gayesavas

Gece ve gündüze uygun sıcak bir sonbahar kokusu. Vanilya çok baskın değil bu yüzden diğer kokuları daha kolay seçebiliyorsunuz.

Miss koku

Vay be nish parfüm parmus de marley Safanad içeriği burdan çalmış sanırım çok benziyor

Enchantéedesviolettes

Surprisingly impressed. Starts out heavy on the peach and aldehydes and develops within minutes into a creamy, smooth, delicate floral. On my skin, anyways, i really get the gardenia and ylang. Smells expensive! Lasts a good 4-5 hours. I really like this one.

avonman

Just an FYI to All You Rare GOLD Lovers....Avon Is Releasing A new Flanker, Rare Gold INTENSE in C.16, It has more potent ingredients for a longer wear time, They are Also releasing a totally new fragrance Rare PLATINUM Intense.

mendalia

Oh how I love this fragrance. In the late 90s and early 2000s I was a belly dancer and this was the fragrance I chose to wear when I performed. There was something so warm and sexy and mysterious about it I just thought it was perfect. I will Waze lasted so long on me and I couldn’t believe it was an Avon fragrance. Avon really put some winners out during that time. There is something about it that reminds me a little bit of some of the perfumes and Thierry Mugler’s mirror collection, I think it’s the sandalwood Amber incense-y kind of vibe. I recently re-purchased a vintage bottle and I have to say it doesn’t disappoint. I will be saving this for the fall but I can’t wait to break it out. Delicious!

MoonSparrow

Just received my purse sized bottle of this. It came recommended to me by a fellow fragrantican as a gardenia smell-alike, and that it does. But it's not completely gardenia. To my nose it is a tuberose bomb like Madonna's Truth or Dare, only smoother and not so loud as that one. I get no Poeme vibe whatsoever - Poeme is a favorite of mine and to me it and Rare Gold are two entirely different fragrances. Poeme is much sweeter.

White flowers all the way with a bit of indole are what I'm getting. Aldehydes are listed as a middle note but I'm not getting that either. Thank God - I hate aldehydes!

Overall this is pleasant and I like it; I can see a man appreciating it on a woman and it is the perfect fragrance for a cool spring day...like today. I will buy a full bottle once finished with this small one.

VedraSarajka

So to be honest, tried so many exeonsive perfumes and I own many of them, but with this one I really feel that I have perfume on me- yesterday everyone I interacted with- complimented the scent on me- it eas Rare gold. I am 24-year old lady, and I love this one! My boyfriend said to spray less beacuse it is too loud haha! It is loud it is strong- but you will be noticed!

Devved

For a fragrance of 1995, it is not really outdated. The ylang-ylang dominates this one. Reminds me how those 'magic' shops smell which sell tarot cards and witch stuff. Doesn`t really have a lot of depth or heaviness to it. However there is this green note from the lily or jasmine or something that sticks to the skin and smells completely off. When you smell it from the bottle there is this sweetness but when on skin, it is not sweet at all. Plus there is this soap like kick to it, that smells like old wool that's been left in the wardrobe from the 80s.

MoonGirl

Warm, sultry, orange blossom with tulips and mandarin. Smells very luxurious and expensive but I much preferred the original bottle.

JNegron13

Hey everyone, very new to reviewing fragrances however I have loved perfumes since I was a child. I remember my best Christmas gift being the Barbie perfume making machine. Anyway back to Rare Gold. Ahhh this reminds me of Romance and Love. I remember wearing this during the time I was dating to the time when my son was born, so this scent gives me fond memories. Word of advice, do not buy the new formulation, it does not last more than 10 mins. You can still find the old formulations both with the jewel top and the fan top on eBay. Put your money towards those formulations only! When I sprayed this on my arm after years of not using it, I immediately put a smile on my face. This is a clean tuberose/honey scent (at least on my chemistry), that will get you so many compliments. People are shocked to know that this is a avon scent. This is def a scent for a real no non-sense sexy woman.

ViouAmara

On my skin it starts fresh, with a short spicy ylang and a drop of aldehyde, light and joyful. The first part is the one I prefer. Than the white flowers come into the sun, mainly a tuberose-gardenia to my nose. The sandalwood is very peachy, creamy sweet, to support the floral accord and add more and more warm depth.
It’s cosy and nice, a little bit milky, with a good longevity. I don’t regret my inexpensive blind buy.

mldaleali28

My review is based on samples: there's a note in it that I deeply dislike, similar to the one in Amarige, Vanderbilt and Poeme. I have no idea what it is, maybe tuberose. I'm not an expert but I'd really like to find out so I can avoid it. Otherwise it's a nice perfume, smells more expensive than it is. Not for me though.
Edit: I think the powdery note is the culprit.

Mahsiah

it was my grandmother's favorite scent. it just smells..cozy, warm, and expensive.

bel.gravia

Rare Gold does smell like a million bucks, indeed :)
A juicy, ripe peach! It smells like a million of juiciest, rippest, orange golden peaches. There is a clear note of sandalwood, tuberose... smells like 80s powerhouse perfume. Reminds me of Burberry Body and to some extent Gucci Rush but without the spiciness. Ahh, juicy golden perfume, love it.

876Beauty

This smells like a million bucks, it's a cozy, sophisticated a bit sweet and powdery. I wished it lasted longer but hey it's cheap. The ylang ylang note stands out without smelling dated

Deee25

Love love the notes in this perfume it one of my signature perfumes, has similar notes to JP Gautier Classique which i love, i get compliments and people asking what is that scent i am wearing.

Arrchv

Identical to La Panthere, twin sisters.

mevans

I've probably had about 3 or 4 bottles of this over the years. I always come back to it eventually when I run out. It's a warm, cozy and inviting scent. A hint of sweetness. It has the feel of a classical scent. It's a really nice floral at a great price. I also use the shower gel and lotion.

correspondencepersonal

Rare Gold is one of those fragrances that really draws compliments.
I know that I've said this BEFORE, however - if you are quibbling about whether or not to try this, DO!

I'm surprised by this -
It opens with a strength that you'd expect from the major fragrance houses of the 1980's.

However, by the first hour of wear - this has carmelized into the skin - and becomes irresistible!

The body lotion and shower gel are definitely worth trying.
Does it get better than this?
If so -- let me know!

I love this - if you know of anything similar - personal message me, for now -- this is IT!

I get so many compliments - consecutively on this!

I'm delighted to have found Elizabeth Taylor's Emeralds and Diamonds - which people said smells similar to Rare Gold.

In a side by side comparison with "Rare Gold" by Avon - they are similar, in the same exact chord as one another and it would take an expert nose to tell these two apart. It would take a side by side comparison to tell these two apart.

Elizabeth Taylor's Emerald and Diamonds first minutes of spray is slightly lighter with more noticeable air-ness in the spray. For this reason, Emerald and Diamonds appears like the younger sister to Rare Gold.

Rare Gold is more concentrated and smells more like the oils of this essence, it is stronger and doesn't have the air-y aldehyde "Ozonic" lift that happens with Emerald and Diamonds. About a half hour into the wear of this, the peach type notes in Rare Gold begin to emerge. This is heavenly on the skin. This is when the chemical interchange happens where the fragrance begins to dance on the skin.

Elizabeth Taylor's Emerald and Diamonds wears lighter, it is less syrupy (less oil) than Rare Gold. I detect the notes of carnation and tuberose more in the blend with Emerald and Diamonds - which gives a slight lilt to the fragrance, more of an up-beat lift. Rare Gold is more refined, well blended -- which makes it appear more serious, business-like...it comes across more mature. Rare Gold smells expensive, cultured, it smells like old money.

Both smell so similar that they could be used interchangeably as a signature. I really LOVE both! (It is exciting to find another fragrance that I love as much as Rare Gold because this is one of the most complimented fragrances that I've ever worn, with my particular chemistry).

Rare Gold wins the horse race for longevity - this is one that I can still smell on my skin even 12-15 hours after spraying. The thing that I really love about it is the way that it caramelizes with my skin during the final stage of the dry down. The most gorgeous musk is the final phase of this, which is really one of my very favorite notes. This is amazing! I can't begin to tell you all of the compliments that I've had with this fragrance. And yes, the people come up to me with starlit eyes! This is magical on! Love it! It really DOES SOMETHING with my chemistry! LOVE IT!

Emerald and Diamonds lasts 6-8 hours on the skin, it fades more quickly...but there is a youthful vibe to E&D which would make this a great choice for more casual outings, lunches, doing things outdoors. I wouldn't object to this as an office/business fragrance because the silage is not completely overwhelming.

In the final dry down - Rare Gold ends on a sexy musk peachy smell that draws the compliments and would be a better romantic date-night choice. I don't know yet how people respond to Emerald and Diamonds, but it ends on a note that is more floral tuberose/gardenia with a somewhat oceanic type expansive smell...again, another reason why I would wear this for more casual occasions...more outdoorsy and casual.

Both would be a great duo for a signature. They both are similar enough to create their own "brand" - but different enough to serve two separate purposes. Emerald and Diamonds, more casual wear -- Rare Gold - more formal/business wear. Both could be worn to the office/for business events.

-------------

Rare Gold is a favorite, it has been from the start --
I love Rare Pearls too!
Both are unique - so different from each other!
Both have had a ton of compliments!

Konga5000

This has elements of Madonna's Truth or Dare and Elizabeth Taylor's Gardenia (and Versace's Blond?) . This is a "budget" Tuberose / Gardenia , and a nice one at that. (This is the "diamond" head cap review and I got it for a dollar at the flea market today.) Bottle is nice! Reviews on here seem to be over-explaining a simple fragrance. For the price--it's fantastic.
EDIT: One hour into this and I'm like "Damn, this is better than I had thought". So there's that.
EDIT EDIT: Really impressed by this and enjoying it for a week now......

Bioluv

Does this remind anyone of givenchy very irresistible? Edp in purple bottle i think.

Rare Gold -

I have quite a story with Rare Gold. I first found this perfume around the same time that I tried Rare Pearls - and I love both perfumes, for different reasons.
I wore this a lot several years ago - and then I decided to cycle back through some of my other perfumes and then Rare Gold sat at the back of my drawer for awhile. I was reaching for some of Avon's newer fragrances this past 3 years. However, on a whim - I decided to wear this fragrance again this week.

The compliments start pouring in!
This is AMAZING!
What's more? It lasts on my skin - HOURS! Yes, I've smelled this still on my skin a good 10 -15 hours after first spraying it!

This just goes to show that you really have to try fragrances and find something that melds with your own chemistry. This perfume formula actually caramelizes with my chemistry... so at the end of the day, this has a gorgeous musky scent that is simply irresistible! I LOVE it!

I get compliments on the other fragrances too -
But this is one that lit my boyfriends eyes up.

Ok -
That did it for me!

I've always been a fan of Rare Gold -- but seeing his response, I'll definitely move this to the front of the fragrance drawer!

----------

Rare Gold is a good blend with Attraction - by Avon, also.
Sometimes I start the day with Attraction, then when that one begins to need a refresh - I will spray on Rare Gold for evening, late-afternoon.

This combination is also an Attention Magnet! LOL...
The compliments pour in!
Can it be that easy?
Yes - the right blend of fragrance notes can accomplish A LOT!

-----------------
Just to back this up --
I have been wearing Rare Gold a lot this past couple of months - and I have never had a perfume that receives THIS MANY COMPLIMENTS! Wow!

It smells similar to Southern Style Peach Tea - it smells Peachy and there are notes in this that remind me of tea. I love this one - and most especially, I love the star-struck look in the eyes of the people who have complimented me. THEY LOVE THIS ONE!

This is a Winner -- Truly RARE GOLD!

---------

I perceive this perfume to be more of a fall/winter/evening type perfume - although this wears very well on cooler spring days. I think this is a bit heavy for the hottest days in summer, unless you are primarily in an air-conditioned building or in a climate where the evenings are cooler. This is a perfect evening wear perfume.

This receives so many compliments that I find it hard to wear anything else...
I love trying and sampling new perfumes, but this is one that I return to - time and time again.
I've tried a lot of more expensive perfumes, but for some reason - this perfume is one of the best with my chemistry. This perfume is moderately and reasonably priced - however, the quality reads that this is a high end perfume.

The compliments are like no other perfume that I have worn - with the exception of Beautiful by Estee Lauder. I find people leaning in - just to smell this one. Yes, they LOVE it! ; )

Bearmother

I loved this in my late teens. I remember getting asked if i were wearing Red door at the time, which looking at it does have some similar notes with the Ylang ylang, Jasmine, lily of the valley, orange bloosom, and sandlewood.

I'm sampling this from a manufacturer 1ml sample. I do not doubt that my review would be different if it was a spray, and especially if it was an older version. I don't know for sure, but I believe this is the newest version. It says "made in Poland," and was sent to me by a Fragrantican there.

This starts off as a white floral burst. Not a bomb, because it's not that strong. But it's definitely dominant in the white florals particularly tuberose. There is also a bit of that plastic/waxy note that so often accompanies tuberose, but this fades.

In the development, the peach really shines, keeping this from being a strictly floral scent. There is also a soapiness from the aldehydes that give it a sophisticated edge. But really it's the ylang ylang and the tuberose that rule throughout.

As I said, I would love this in one of the rounded bottles with the gem or fan on the top. I have Rare Diamonds with the gem on top, and that is positively magical. So out of curiosity, I think I'll hunt this down.

Certainly I think even the current formulation is quite good and pleasant for someone looking for warm tropical flowers. I think this is a lovely year-round scent that is going to behave differently depending on the weather and humidity. It's a classic smelling scent. Quite nice.

Svenska79

I tried Rare Gold at the beginning of Fall. I immediately took a liking at first sniff. It was a warm hug in a bottle. I feel positively regal wearing this potion of orange blossom and vanilla. Slightly sweet, very floral, and powdery. This fragrance has strength. A little goes a long way.

Blu Garcon

Oh my goodness, I tried the Rare Mold Parfum and it's actually quite lovely!

mirrorghost

this review is for the vintage scent. it starts off with peach, amber and some florals. it's a golden peachy scent...it doesn't smell like tresor per se, but gives me a similar feeling, though it's less dense and airier with the aldehydes. the florals are hard to pick out, but i suppose it is likely ylang ylang ...yet i mostly smell an ambery-peach. i like this! seems a mini bottle is necessary.

ETA: scored a bottle of the vintage 1995 scent on ebay. after wearing it a few more times, i realized what it smells like to me- a 90s peachy scent (not tresor exactly) mixed with poeme!

Sabretoothkitten

I like it but it's heady and golden/ white floral/ vanillic. Like a less opulent Poeme. Winter is the season for Rare Gold. I have not smelled all the other " Rare" Avon line but the notes in this seem most likely to suit me.
All in all very nice there's a hint of something a bit woody or dusty at the very end of the notes much like the base in Sensuous Nude but it's slight enough that I can still enjoy this perfume. Probably the amber/ sandalwood combo.

sibaraa

Although it smells more yellow golden floral with an ambery base, i'm surprised that it's full of white ones, but regardless, it smells so nice. This reminds me of fall a lot, even the color says so.

nisrine

i was really disappointed when i got the perfume , this i straight up amber , i like heavy perfumes like attraction and far away and i have never had a problem , but rare gold gave me a straight headache and everyone who's around me hated it it is powerful in a bad way , i don't smell vanilla nothing beside amber . bad choice never purchase this again

Nina Anaisa

This is the first time that I'm welcomed with a splash of rubbing alcohol from an Avon fragrance (it might that it wasn't properly taken care of by the distributors here in DR. It's frickn hot!!!), but I liked it:strong and sharp like an 80's/90's perfume. when it reached the dry down, I didn't like it at all!!!! there's this flower that i don't like the smell of. My great-aunt has a tree of this flower and every time it blooms, the whole porch and near by areas smell like this. It is a very sweet, strong, flowery smell. Everyone loves it, except me.

I don't think is bad fragrance, but it isn't for me. Rare Pearls suit me better, but I don't think I will repurchase that one either. I will stick to the older fragrances that my mom and my grandma used to wear.

Cute bottle, though.

lhm

Sophisticated and sensual. However, it is not my usual type but I like it. I also like the bottle design.

I have a second bottle of 50ml, NEW, if someone interested in having it, would be happy for a swapping :) PM me if you have questions :)

Heretic_Housewife

I have an older bottle of the parfum strength, in a fan shaped bottle with fan shaped stopper.

It's a lovely perfume, slightly dated, but nice. Very rich and opulent. I think one of my aunts wore it, it smells very familiar.

It opens with fruit and ylang-ylang. The sourness of the citrus fruit fades first, then leaves a sweeter nectar-ish fruit note.

It dries down to a sweeter, spicy, fruity floral with a kind of honey smelling note. I've smelled other fragrances from the early-mid 90s which have the same feel to them.

I love that genre of fragrances.

Being a parfum with dab-on stopper, sillage is very poor. Within your personal space bubble, which is expected. Staying power is good. It lasts through a date or evening out. If I put it on at bedtime, I can still smell it faintly in the morning. Which, again, is usual and expected for a parfum.

I am looking forward to trying this fragrance in the spray formula, to see how close it comes to the parfum.

JenJones28

This fragrance took me some time to understand. The top notes are a sour punch in the nose. I’m wondering if this is tuberose? I generally like tuberose but whatever is in the opening of this actually bothers my stomach. After about 20 min you will get a rich white floral peachy scent that is very good. However, because of the opening This is my least favorite of the Avon “rare” series.

meg0825

Rare Gold is a rich and opulent fragrance with sunny ylang ylang, juicy peach, heady white florals, and warm amber. As others have said, this really smells more expensive than it is. This is not a shy perfume and is best to wear during the cooler months. A well done bargain fragrance from Avon.

comptemooc

There is nothing soft or light about this perfume..
I can detect honey , orange,Jasmine...
It reminds me a little bit of "giordani gold" by oriflame..
but this one (rare gold) is stronger..
I like it .. but it's not for everyday use..

Mrs. ELE Arjona

I've been wearing this on and off for about 5 years and have 1/3 left of a 50ml Gold Capped bottle. I think this is an absolutely lovely fragrance. I'm sad they changed the bottle style, but I have so many perfumes I'm not sure when I'll honestly be in the market to get another bottle. Its sweet, citrusy, white floral with a woodsy amber base. I think it may have been Avon's dupe of ET's Diamonds and Emeralds because the notes are so similar and it came out two years afterwards. I had no idea, and have been wearing this for so long I honestly prefer it, but if I smell them side by side Rare Gold gets lost in the notes of the other fume. If you like warm, sweet, citrus, white flowers, hints of woods, or Amber give this a try!

Warmlisa18

I wear this to bed. Smells like apple is the top note with a hint of vanilla.my first perfume

dmaw

Just tried Bronzed Amber Obsession by Bodycology and find it to be so similar to Rare Gold. Also thinking I agree with other reviewers as to the similarity to Far Away.

gingerascotttea

I loved Rare Gold years ago, thought I would still love it, so ordered some and got it last week. I'm disappointed because I'm not getting the thick warmth of this fragrance anymore. The bottle looks different too, it use to be in a rounded bottle with a fancy cap that had a blob of gold on the top. I'm almost certain that the fragrance in the rounded bottle smells different,  because I can't identify this fragrance now.

celebrity89

I just picked up the deodorant and was pleased that it smelled so much like Far Away.

dolores flora davila

Everytime I wear this perfume, people just tell me it smells delicious and think its an expensive perfume. I really like it and think its another gem from Avon

harperhd

A sophisticated, sensual scent without going overboard. Not an old lady fragrance, in my opinion, and thankfully not a sugary one, so it's perfect for a confident, adult woman. Modern and satisfying. Very affordable for an EDP and I like to layer it with the lotion. Smells expensive. Reminds me slightly of Poeme by Lancome, which I used to wear when it was released in the 90's, and while it's not as heady and linear as Poeme, RG is still a rich, warm wear. I definitely have to be in the mood to wear such a luxurious perfume, so it's not my top choice for an everyday fragrance, but I would recommend Rare Gold if you gravitate toward strong, sexy florals with a kiss of amber.

Nettyb

Definitely not an expert nose here. This perfume reminds me of Givenchy Organza. Rare Gold is a great bargain!

xJessax

I just received this perfume from a dear friend of mine. I have the old formulation I believe, in the classic bottle with the golden gem on the cap. The fragrance itself is light, but lasts a moderately long time on my skin. The initial scent I get from this is peach, tuberose, ylang ylang, amber, and a hint of jasmine. The aldehydes aren't noticeable to me. This is a creamy, smooth, elegant floral scent, it's a little on the mature side but not "old-ladyish". Overall I adore it! For such a low price this one is tasteful and classic, something I can wear for all occasions. I agree that at first it opens with a generic "perfumey" smell, but as it dries down it becomes such a soothing feminine scent with just the right amount of white florals, with a touch of sweetness. This one is extremely wearable for me, I can see myself spraying this on sunny spring mornings, on the weekend, or even out to a family dinner. Loving it so far!

Scent: 8/10
Longevity: About 5 hours, not bad for the price. Can always spritz some more in the middle of the day.
Sillage: Soft, it's subtle but still noticeable to myself and others.

edy_yeti

I love it! Very feminine, soft and elegant. You can wear every day it's quite long lasting. This is a sweet and powder category perfume.

LadyPilot

I'm reading the notes and I can hardly believe they refer to Rare Gold!!!
Ylang-ylang? Extremely watered-down, non-irritating, dominated (thankfully) by bergamot - that's what it is! Plus some melon, carnation and delicate white flowers.
NO vanilla, NO amber, NO sandalwood whatsoever... just fruity/floral freshness with a tiny addition of some high quality aldehydes. I've got the "vintage" round bottle - I'm not sure it makes the difference...
It is a really precious fragrance, the "big-nineties" one, I'm happy to have it, despite using it only occasionally, but it is a must!!!:)

سابرينا.ساري

smells reallly good. The orange blossom in most of the perfumes is what makes it so good. Smells classy, sophisticated & inexpensive for the price. I would buy this again. A little goes along way. Just one spray on you're sweater and it's there all day. My husband loves it too.

11Eňka11

It reminds me of Diamonds and emeralds ET, maybe because of a peach, but it's less sweet, and it is softer. Like both of them, but ET more....

Jen276

This is one of the first perfumes I ever had 20 yrs ago and I bought it again recently. It has changed slightly, not as strong and lost some of the warmth but is still beautiful. Loving it more now I've had it a few weeks. It is a mature/classic sort of scent without being old fashioned. Its a bit like Vanderbilt but warmer and not as overpowering. It doesn't smell cheap even though it isn't expensive. Love it.

mounen

I got some sample vials of this, I've put some on my wrists and its still there six hours later.
I think it's a linear scent, no top middle and base, and its a lovely floral mix, it works, doesn't smell cheap or poor quality.

It has a formal quality about it to me. I think it would be good for someone working in an office environment, or going to some kind of formal event.

rye

Rare Gold has been reformulated. It used to have a heavy dose of peach, tuberose, and the musk base which I so dislike in many of the older Avon creations. It didn't ruin Rare Gold for me as the amber and sandlewood melted it down into a deep, rich, quite sophisticated scent for the price. However, it's now all about orange blossoms and amber and I'm glad they updated it without losing the warmth. Still a very good buy for the fall and winter season and more on trend for a casual lifestyle.

ÉviRépási

It's tooo woodsy for me. I wanted to try sooo long, but it's nothing else, like a cheap, old lady scent. This frag reminds me of Vanderbilt parfume but, but not that rich, and soft like the V. one...

BrittneyN

Delicate & pretty. Very feminine orange flower perfume with decent longevity @ 4 hours! One of Avon's best IMO.

Oceansoul87

This is my mother's favourite perfume. It smells awesome on her, but horrible on me..

cinderella89

come roberto cavalli eau de parfum

noseynose68

I REALLY like this one! A soft orange flower scent it dries down on me to a light summer flower scent like daffodils...gentle and reminds me of Jontue???

RaggedyAnne

Rare Gold was a blind buy for me, and I am so glad I got it. This is a lovely ylang ylang perfume, with Sandalwood, which to be honest has never been something I have liked very much before. It smells like an expensive high end perfume to me. Longevity is good for my perfume eating skin, 5-6 hours! And moderate sillage. It's a warm and cosy perfume that would be good for duvet days. I particularly love the ylang ylang note, as my skin seems to love this note....I can't say its like anything I already own, maybe slightly reminiscent of Intimately yours by Beckham. I dont own many Avon Perfumes, but this one will definately be re-purchased when I run out.

tandaina

First spray of this was a lovely golden tuberose, perhaps some lily. But as it's drying down it's getting more and more synthetic and "perfumey" in a way that's not attractive on me at all. :(

PeQaBu

My favorite GO-TO scent! Magnificent, sophisticated, alluring, sensuous, practical!

ameskay

me oh my i LOOOOVE this scent.

my dear husband loved it too while we were dating :)

sillage is good. one of my signatures back in the day when i used to buy loads of avon perfumes.

if i ever get the chance again i would definitely make it mine again :)

themattsky

The original bottle was gorgeous. I don't like this new one. Looks very, very cheap

Southern Blonde

A beautiful luxurious white floral from the beloved cheapie fragrance line Avon. This scent starts off with a nice peach note and then I smell gardenia, jasmine and tuberose. The gardenia flower in this scent smells like vanilla. But there is also vanilla especially at the end so it feels like a white floral bouquet with vanilla. A tad like Poeme by Lancôme but less sharp and more subtle. Very sweet, and soft but detectable to others. I think it's gorgeous and lasts all day. I've received many compliments on it. Avon, who knew.

oceanbreeze

It was summer 1997 when I first tried this fragrance - I loved it. Several years later they change the bottle design and the scent - I did not like it. It's like a beautiful smiling girl became older and serious. I have not tried the new reformulation in the new bottle.

Astrogenie

I first had this fragrance in 1995 and loved it. I wore it during a special time in my life after my son was born so it holds happy memories for me. I recently tried it again and feel that it has changed a bit - more fruity top notes rather than the floral ones of 1995. I noticed on the Avon UK website they describe it as "Golden Melon" which wasn't the description in 1995. I remember it as a lovely floral bouquet with orange blossom central. I suspect this could have been Avon's answer to Lancome Poeme and/or Estee Lauder Beautiful - also gorgeous golden floral perfumes. I still like it very much now I have got used to it again. Half an hour or so after spraying it smells similar to how it used to and I still find it a sunny and cheerful fragrance. Good silage and lasts 3-4 hours on me.

beaglebaileysmom

I love it in the bottle, but putting it on, it just feels perfume-y. It's pretty with no off-putting notes. It's dated in a good way, and it is a floral version of Mackie. It's worth the sale price. If you are mature enough not to rule this out based on its manufacturer (Avon) or the fact that it is not on-trend, you will probably have a positive experience. This is a solid "like" but far from "love." Am I smelling something like Claiborne's Vivid in this fragrance, or is my scent memory faulty?

Longevity: 7/10
Scent: 6/10
Overall: 6/10

sophiesnose

It is aptly named. Smells golden thanks to the peach and amber. The aldehydes and florals are there too. I'm enjoying Rare Gold on this absolutely frigid but sunny day here in Canada right now. -39 with the wind chill. This makes be feel warmer.

Hippolyta

So I had this perfume for some time now and decided it was appropriate to give it a review.
On me Rare Gold begins as a strong white floral fragrance (accenting on the tuberose here). The aldehydes are also quite prominent . But I think that true beauty here is the juicy peach note which gives it a more light and sunny feeling.
Initially this is quite strong, so if you care for the people around you, I advise you to spritz sparingly. After time Rare Gold develops into an airy, light, soapy sent that is reminiscent of honey and flowers. The longevity is about 5-6 hours and the sillage is moderate to strong on me.
I also noticed that when I spray RG on my hair or my clothes I get more of a honey -peach scent in contrast to when I apply it on my skin. Then it turns into a more of an opulent tuberose aroma.

lhm

If anyone is interested in getting it, I still have a new Rare Gold Avon. Let me know and we can arrange a swap! Thank you ladies :)

liisa77

I also tried it and its like far away, horrid smell u want to get rid of it just after u have sprayd it, its long lasting, so be careful! My mom asked what stinks here and yes, its pure hate in a bottle.

canadianpetite

Big ylang-ylang and tuberose flowers sweetened with peach and loaded with aldehydes. I would group it with the likes of Elizabeth Taylor and Red Door power perfumes. It gave me a headache within seconds so I could not bear it long enough if there are sandalwood and amber (both I love) in the drydown. I can only imagine that the vintage were gloriously beautiful or Rare Gold would not have lasted these many years. Not for me.

One spray on me
Sillage: arm's length with trail
Longevity: had to scrub off but would guess at about 4 hours
Rating: 1/5

faerywren

I was an "Avon lady" when Rare Gold was released in the '90s and was instantly a fan. So sophisticated and warm. It lasted forever on me. I had about 4 promo bottles laying around at one point. Wish I had them now.

Maazoh

I have quite mixed feelings about this...somehow everything with orange flower smells super soapy on my skin. Under the strong soap scent there is a nice floral that just cannot get through. Guess I just have to keep on experimenting with it.

Rochellesc

Oh the importance of trying it on oneself! It smelled so different at the nozzle than it shortly did on me after two spritzes. Within minutes, I could not get the memory of my middle school years and the adoration so many of us had for the Gloria Vanderbilt EDT we all used to wear along with our GV jeans! It wasn't an unpleasant memory but it certainly wasn't what I was expecting or hoping for (based on others' descriptions and the notes listed). Ah well. Still on the hunt for my signature floral-fruity-gourmand-oriental signature fragrance!

mystica

It's highly likely that they reformulated Rare Gold as well, so I believe it's time for a back-up.

I haven't smelled a recently produced version -or haven't yet seen a new/different bottle- but that's the case with Rare Pearls according to what people say, and I believe in my area Rare Gold comes in still the same shape.

I believe I've been a bit unfair towards Rare Gold in the past, finding it somehow artifical or Pledge like. But my bottle is 4 years old and the juice maturates SUPERB. It only gets better in time like it ripes. Every bit of sharpness is gone and it truly smells like a high end fragrance. Tuberose, gardenia, jasmine, peach, amber, all superb together.

A very feminine, creamy, lovely fragrance. I think I'll be rushing to my Avon's rep to get one more bottle before it disappears!

Edit: Whoa, there we have a big picture of the new bottle and a new category for the scent "floral aldehyde" which was floral oriental once ago!

wizzness

I'm not sure which perfume it reminds me of, but too me it's a much more bearable version of a certain type of 'mature' perfume I've always found too 'old-lady-ish' and funky. i think one of those was perhaps l'air du temps? Anyhow, It makes me feel quite elegant but it's not 'delicious' to me, I'm looking for something that will make me have to keep sniffing my wrist haha

cleopatrspearl

Good perfume, long lasting, warm notes permeate

Manega77

Whit

Rare Gold was a blind buy for me, and a very good one at that. This is a very lovely ylang ylang/sandalwood scent! I wasn't really sure what to expect, but it's slightly reminiscent of Ysatis, IMO. Perhaps a "sunnier" version of it? It really does smell more expensive than what it is! I got pretty good longevity out of it, around five hours with moderate sillage. My skin amplified the ylang and sandalwood and I kept getting nuances of peach to "brighten" it up. It's a warm, sexy scent that would be good for nuzzling. I think one could possibly wear it year round if they adjusted the application. Overall, I'm highly satisfied with my Avon purchase and if you love ylang ylang, do try it!

Cocotea

I used this the entire summer of 2005. I over sprayed but I was blissfully unaware. When someone said they smelled me coming from a mile away I took it as a compliment. It smells like oranges and sunshine, some flowers and amber in the dry down. It's very long lasting and projects very very well. Smells more expensive than it is. If you over spray it can take on a dated feel I think, but if you apply with a light hand its glorious. I recently got a bottle for nostalgia's sake and sometimes, I just sniff the cap just to be transported back to 2005. It was a great year.

Gingercat77

This reminds me instantly of Chloe the original. I can smell the tuberose strongly and also the yellow florals. I got this in the same pack as Rare Pearls, and it's suddenly clear to me why they are named as they are! Pearls= white floral, gold = yellow florals.
Sadly i have never really liked the yellow florals ( i adore white florals though!) but my mother in law loves Chloe the original fragrance. Seeing as she has just moved house and mislaid her perfume in the move, i gifted her my bottle of this and she adores it. No doubt it's a refined, pretty, elegant scent but it just wasnt my cup of tea.

gothvixen

I have many expensive scents, but the only one that receives more compliments than Rare Gold is Paloma Picasso (my signature). It smells far more expensive and luxurious than it's minimal price would suggest. I cannot recommend it highly enough.

Tsukinohime

RG is a journey into a realm of wealth, luxury and opulence. A decadent concoction of fragrant jasmine wrapped in warm, glowing amber and vanilla creates an impression of a beautiful woman, decked in her finest jewels, luxuriating in soft, gold colored satin sheets. It has an appeal that is seductive yet never tacky or without class. Two light spritz and it will create a gentle aura that stays with you all day long. Absolutely beautiful. Definitely Avon's finest moment. If one doesn't know any better it could be mistaken for a high end perfume. And indeed it is in all but price. So do give it a try. It would be an olfactory experience you'll never forget.

MadeiraD

Sweet ylang ylang, juicy peach and jasmine drizzled in sweet amber and honey. This is golden, bright, bold and seriously lovely.

Well played, Avon, well played.

icysdn

to me, this only smells bearable when im at a club. and i think sillage is ok and smells fine in such a closed place. but nowhere else. it gives me nausea with so many weird flower scents (tho' i love flower scents) and it doesnt get better with the last notes. i tried a couple of times to see if i change my mind, in summer and autumn..no, its just weird, not fresh not sweet not creamy. and also it lasts longer than avon's other perfumes which is not a good thing in rare gold's case. id like it more if it faded away quickly and left a lighter scent behind.

swedtmolinari

Here in Brazil, there were a lot of flower fragrances of Avon, like Rare Gold, Treselle, Christian Lacroix, Crystal Aura, Dream Life, Far Away Dreams, Incandessence, In Bloom, Millenia, Perceive, Forever, Step into Sexy, Starring, Women of Earth, Eternal Magic Enchanted, Today and many others...but all of them were descontinued. Unfortunately, these precious fragrances gone, and some poor fragrances stay...

The_Entity

It smells like a stronger Versace Jeans Couture, the peach and honey are the most dominant notes in this for me, very nice for warm weather

jamuna.uzkuryte

This scent is interesting, when my friend wore it it smelled like fresh fruits, really lovely. So I bought it and on me it smells very flowery but no fruits. But it's still very wearable and long lasting, good value for money.

Shadow_Witch

This has been reformulated and in my humble opinion, for the better. I have the original and the current formulas. The original is an oily, bombastic tuberose and peach fragrance. The current is orange blossom honey and amber. I prefer the current formula but definitely appreciate the original for being a product of it's time (1995).

b.a.denney

I had this once years ago, and must have gotten rid of it. I just found a brand new bottle today, and now I see why I got rid of it. I can see why a lot of ladies would like this, but it's just not "me". Way too much white and yellow floral in this for me. I want to like it, but I just can't get there. My box states that this was made in 2002, but the first review, way down below, says the original bottle with the fan shape top, smelled much better. I think my original bottle was the "original" formula, but I obviously didn't love that either. This bottle I just got, does have the golden bauble type top, so maybe there was a formula change? After two tries with this perfume, I'm hanging it up with this one.

ginger tea

this is truly a feel good fragrance. It uplifts your mood even when nothing else does.

MikaylaCrosby

Well, I gave it a shot based on reviews. I heard some people saying that it smelled very "mature." The rumors are true. I think I will give it to my mom. She may like it. It kinda reminds me of a "Youthdew" type fragrance which my mom loves. I have Rare Pearl too, and that one was actually nice. I would recommend Rare Pearl before Rare Gold, although who knows, maybe I am biased because it reminds me of my mom's perfume and I associate it with matronly and nothing else. I just sprayed it again and now it is reminding me of some sort of airfreshener. A floral/spicy one. Also reminds me a little of Rapture by Victoria Secret.

Niya

I get a Red Door-ish vybe on the dry down. The limited edition reformulation not the original and just like that one, this turns my stomach! Promptly got rid of it.

mystica

Rare Gold right now is TUBEROSE on my skin. Gosh, is this the maturation, a warm summer night, or merely my chemistry? I don't know; all I know is Rare Gold smells truly classic and way more expensive than it is.

Gardenia, jasmine and sandalwood are also detectable to my nose and lovely too.

Indeed I may skip buying a bottle of Givenchy's Organza -which is on my wish list-, as Rare Gold smells quite similar to me now.

boheme_maras

The truth is that this perfume is good. Smells like blossoms of white flower with amber and ylang ylang but to me its good only when i smell it in the bottle. When the perfume comes to my skin its smells awfull the amber is too sharp and sour and this ylang ylang sharp as a knife. Everyone beging me not to wear it cause its smell so bad to me. I gave it to my sister. I prefer Rare Pearls or Rare Diamonds...

SheAlwaysSmellsGood

I just got this and am immensley pleased. It smells amazing and has completely changed my mind about Avon perfumes. I do own a few, but they were lackluster for the most part... or just not the right scent for me. This one has that red berry under note that I *LOVE* even though it's not listed as a note. Maybe my nose just doesn't know what white floral smells like. I do not know. But I love it.

Beccaru

I love that of all the expensive perfumes I own this is the one scent that never fails to prompt my husband to ask what it is that I'm wearing. £7 - bargain!

Dayi Marquez

This scent is absolutely delicious. Its so feminine and pretty. This is a scent that I do not regret purchasing and that will become a staple in my perfume collection. I love to find great little perfumes like this that are a true unexpected treasure.
The amber and musk are the most prominent to me. It smells very creamy. I can also smell the flower components which is great. Great Job Avon.

nananessa

NO-OOOOOO-Body does AMBER quite like Avon !!! The amber, musk, vanilla accord seems to accentuate so very many of the greatest Avon fragrances.

This fragrance reminds me of all that is so great about Avon. The word "cheap" or ANY derogatory word ever uttered Avon ought to shatter & crumble in the presence of this great creation. If some noses are not akin to this treasure, then I would chalk it up to an unschooled/knowledgeable olfactory center or wearer. I doubt this is a fragrance for immature noses or women. It is far too complex & "old school" to appeal but to the utmost discriminating women. For this is one amber, musk, vanilla accord that Avon built an empire on.

No one does amber blended with all types of other base accords quite like Avon. It seems Avon took the amber accord of Tabu & made it tasteful & Ladylike---acceptable to all---that drank in this accord. But these women were WOMEN that dared to walk out into this world smelling this good. Usually things like this were hidden for the boudoir & not the office or church. But this golden juice is so very good, who could not fall for it's ylang-ylang opening, laced with peaches so ripe they are bursting forth onto a bed of smouldering amber?

Each and every note unveils itself as only Avon does. But the big thing that strikes me again about Avon---when they do a vanilla note, in the faintest hint of the base---that is when Avon does it the best. The vanilla accord is the last holdout & when it unveils it is anything but that came from handling a rolling pin. This is not dime-store vanilla. It is vanilla for one like me that is NOT usually favorable to vanilla. I hate that vanilla-extract note in Beyoncé & other celeb frags. But the amber/sandalwood accord that leads to the vanilla draw in the nose very close. And it comes across as very feminine & hypnotic rather than the knock-you-out celeb frags of today. You must wait for that delicious vanilla accord. And THIS is that what smites & draws in closer with the most delicious vanilla accord which is only detectable with snoot planted on skin. The blend of amber & vanilla to peek amongst all the wood anchoring the ylang-ylang that Anais Anais promised, seems like a too-huge order to fill. But Bare Gold teaches Anais-Anais Cacharel a lesson on some legevity---which Anais Anais never delivered. So if you want ylang-ylang to deliver more, reach for Rare Gold.

This is an utmost classic---much like the great movies & other things I can experiencce & collect.

I want to experience the best while I can. And this one is in my top 10. A lesson on how to do amber!!!! Get it while you can.

so classy yummy elegant warm... 5*****

Preserved orange peel in white & yellow floral honey, served with peach on top. In similar veins to Il Bacio. Sunshine in a bottle. Sillage-strong Longevity-Very long lasting. Love, love, love.

Aleccsei

I've always considered that 'Rare Gold' was one of the most elegant perfumes by Avon. It's pretty heavy and floral - but all in all, it's great.

nikoleta1

I am not Avon fan, but this one is surprisingly nice, sweet, fruity floral, nothing alhydric there, smells good for 8 $ and happy.

Being the southern USA girl I am, I confess to loving everything big, gorgeous, rich and long-lasting. Although I am a Frag Freak and love scents from all categories, I tend toward the whopper spicy orientals in cooler weather, cool chypre fruity/florals in the warm season. What bayou girl can resist oak moss for goodness sake? It's "home". Mossy oak trees and magnolias. We are born and raised with strong smells all around us. Spicy food, almost suffocating yet heavenly, super heady florals and the smell of wood and earth is everywhere.
This is why..

I ADORE Rare Gold. Sans wood and moss I don't get much of here, this is the smell of southern summer flowers in full bloom. Their scents are captured right in this bottle and it is pure luxe. Yes, it is sweet, juicy, big and bloomy, and that is exactly what I love about it. I detect honeysuckle, carnation and gardenia very clearly in this one along with the occasional hint of roses. Only gardenia is listed as one I detect but the others are wrapped in a floral aldehyde blend. They are definitely there and I know this without making the stuff, therefore my intro. The peach is not a stand-out peach to me. I have to "listen" for it but it is certainly there and well it should be. Avon has outdone themselves with Rare Gold. It smells deliciously expensive for the price, which... to my dismay continues to climb at the "discontinued" price since my initial discovery.

The overall composure is a perfect blend more than very well executed. It is sweet. Use care when spraying and that can be easily tamed. The slightest spritz on each wrist will last all day and keep drying down to even more fabulous. I find nothing too sharp, nor sour wilting flowers as sweet florals tend to go on me. It's jez' absolutely dee-VINE-lee gawjuz, Darlin'. Furthermore, as dressy and rich as it smells, I feel perfectly at home wearing it with jeans or yoga pants. When is it ever a bad time to smell incredible? Got me grinnin' like a mule eatin' briars. ;)

I do not suspect this will be a fragrance anyone would find highly unique or unusual. This is pure classic magic and overwhelmingly beautiful IF, and only if you love sweet florals, which I usually steer far away from due to my skin chemistry, but Rare Gold has done what no other could do so far... after all these years -
*sings to the nanny nanny boo boo tune*
"I can wear a flo-ral, I can wear a flo-ral*
And I a-yum lovin' it,
yum-mee, yum-mee, yuhhhm-mee
Lucky, lucky me-ee!" (Damn, this stuff smells good.:)

CathieH

I only have a small 5mL bottle of this with the little fan on top. It's a rich, warm, sweet scent, at first I thought it was just the peach and mandarin coming through but then I really notice the Ylang Ylang and it is really beautiful. Quite long last with moderate sillage. I don't know the recent version but this one is really nice but the richness really comes through, not sure I would get a full sized bottle but I'm really happy to have this little beauty.

kiristarr

Rare Gold has a sandy quality to it that reminds me of Dune. I'm not going so far as to say that it smells just like Dune. It doesn't. But the hint of dry sand behind the sweetness and floral in Rare Gold presents in a similar way on my skin. For the price, this is a really nice little fragrance.

Update: As my tastes have changed a bit since originally writing this review, I now find the opening of Rare Gold to be a bit too musky for me. The dry down is still pleasant, but I decided to pass this one on while streamlining my collection.

francisrose

I just received this fragrance along with the powder as an early Christmas present. I used it this morning and was delighted with this beautiful, feminine, warm fragrance. It opens with a slight fruity, peachy note, and quickly the rich florals come in, and they are beautiful! Jasmine, ylang ylang and gardenia , not overpowering, but distinct and lush. This perfume ends with a mellow amber, vanilla and woody cloud. Rare Gold is not too gentle, but certainly not strong or obtrusive. It would do well in a day or night setting. I really like this one, and the price is great as well !

HeavyBeatsUK

My Grandma used to wear this in the 90s and I have just bought some and it smells exactly the same as it used to! It's warm with good sillage. My grandmother had 50s tastes and Rare Gold a 50s style fragrance. It makes me feel very pretty.

LisaMari

This would end up with a very metallic fragrance on me, like keys or copper. Far too much bergamot and aldehydes - I guess they were trying to make it smell like gold...?

Radchick

I first bought Rare Gold in 1995, loved it, and wore it a lot. It was in the bottle with the fan shaped cap. I haven’t worn it in years and finally bought a new bottle recently. I’m not sure what’s changed, my nose, my memory, or the scent itself. I used to think it was quite sweet but now I find it more floral and woody. It still has that sparkly peach note, orange blossom which my skin loves to magnify, a tiny hint of tuberose, and warm woods. I still like it. I wish I had a bottle with the fan shaped cap to compare. It really does seem to project a golden aura, so the name is good fit.

gothvixen

This surrounds you in a warm golden glow, and every time I wear it I get compliments. So much better than the low price suggests, it is the only Avon scent I buy regularly.

JaxTheMinx

My wonderful secretary bought me 2x 50ml EDP bottles as a belated birthday/early Xmas pressie. Too wonderful. I've been chasing Gucci Accenti-wanna-be fragrances for a while. This one is very peachy on the opening. It settles down to honey and peach. I do like it although I'm no big fan of honey. I would suggest this as a summer fragrance since much like Accenti, it needs HEAT to douse the overwhelming BOOM. This turns into a wonderful, sultry fragrance on warm skin on a hot day. If you like the 90's fragrances and like peach, do try a tester. I think it might be too heady in cold weather - it probably just hangs around your head all day. :-) I am surprised at the staying power of Avon fragrances. Not shabby!

Lovesmells

Thank you rosenblum!! You are a great help
I bought a bottle recently that is on the orange side of the range; and the pictures I see here and other internet sites is more light colored. I thought it may be a bad bottle, because on me, it is too strong

If anyone wants it, shoot me an email. Maybe we can swap or I'll just send
xoxo

rosembloom

TO LOVESMELLS: mine is a deep golden color verging on the orange but I have bought numerous bottles of this beauty and sometimes the juice is paler... Still does not affect the performance of the fume xxx hope it helps!

Lovesmells

What is the color of this? light yellow or orangy?

thank you

hanzaw116

To me, this fragrance is a personification of gold sparkle or glitter. It smells like peach, flowers and sweetness all the same time, switching from one thing to another. Only thing to complain about: the plastic sprayhead is way too cheap. I'm a guy who can't get enough of florals and just got this to try it out. It wasn't really my thing so I gave it to my sister. She loves it.

Moonwalk Memorie

I get powdery, heavily spiced peach...

Eridanshay1

If you like Elizabeth Taylor's Diamonds & Emeralds, try this. It is very similar with the white flowers, orange blossom and warm base. I love that when Avon does do a fragrance it is so affordable to layer the scent and purchase a coffret. Deodorant, lotion, perfumed body veils, powder, perfumes, shower gels, toilette sprays...it's all ours at ridiculously low prices and they offer many amazing and classic scents. Cheers!

Rice-Kitten

This smells almost identical to the 99p drugstore spray Charlie - Gold except with added notes. It's a warm smell but you can tell the scent has been around for a while; it has that sweet, musky pre-90's smell to it. Saying that, it's not bad. The sillage is pretty good. As a 24 year old woman I'd say it's a bit pre-dated now but it's not the worst you can buy for £7.

SIPLANTIS

I bought it for my mum but when she wore it, i fell in love with this nostalgic scent, it reminded me giorgio by giorgio beverly hills. And it smells lighter than that. If you like smelling sublime and dewy, it's a good choice..

SzekelyEmoke

Way too heavy. Good for older ladies.

biki

Bought it from my friend who carries those aon catalogues around every month in our college. First i didnt like it because i expected something different,it sememed sinthetic to me and not florl at all. But sine i squandered ma cash i tried to come to tems with this perfume and to like it as much as possible. I spritzed some gingerly onto ma hair, then even otno ma body itself, and then magic happened! It felt exotically sweet, flowery sweet and intense,it can blend with certain skin chemistries fabuluously! I was lucky enough to possess such skin. Initially i hoped for other fmaily members to borrow it as often as possible so tht i run out of it quickly, now i dont awnt to gitve it to anyone It kind of breathes sweetness out in hot, sexy gasps!

BikiniBabe

Floral Aldehyde perfumes don't smell good on me one bit...and this one is no exception.

Very floral and rich smelling. Women over 35 would buy this alot. It was a great selling perfume, especially with different gift box sets.

My grandma loves this one but not as much as Rare Pearls. =)

U can follow me on YouTube @ BeautyOnSale

sophisticated

i can't believe it took me so long to buy this one, there was an offer to buy 2 perfumes for the price of one and I thought instead of buying 2 of the same perfume, let's just buy RG and I've got nothing to lose and my oh my... this is so luxurious, my mom said I smell like a lady out of the blue without knowing what I am wearing!! this means feminine, classy & sophisticated and she summed it up.. at work, a colleague asked me if I was wearing JPG's Classique, LOL.. I was complemented all day long because of this rare scent and it does wonders with hot weather.. i'm truly in love ^^

Jenge

I really love Rare Gold. The name matches the scent perfectly. It is very classy and timeless to me. I would label it an Oriental floral. This scent brings to mind a tasteful, sophisticated lady who is also warm and kind to everyone. It is peachy at first, then dries to an ambery, powdery floral. Nice longevity, too. I love that Avon offers powder and deodorant in a lot of their fragrances, I wish more companies did.

marwa.qoura

I bought this perfume when it was first launched in 1995 (I was 18 then ..) but it easily became my Mom's signature perfume . No Doubt it's one of Avon 's BEST creations , but not for anyone , I wore it then for a few time but it's not for a teen , it's for a mature woman (not old ) with confidence & charm. So anyone can literally use it from the age of 20 to 80, but she has to be "mature" enough not just "old" . This is almost the only perfume I have come across that smells EXACTLY like the Jasmine we have it here in Egypt ,and it retains that same fresh scent.Jasmine has been around me here everywhere while growing up , so I know exactly what I am talking about ...In other perfumes I smell "stale " Jasmine , not the real flower which I know ..Have to say the ad with the lady wearing golden dress & lots of fine golden jewellery was the perfect front to that fragrance , this is a typical oriental lady who loves real gold ;)

celebrity89

After reading all the comparisons to Beautiful, I finally got it! Yes it's true, but I would like to clarify to everyone that we are talking about the sweet ORIGINAL Beautiful, not the reformulated one!!!!!!

poppyvintage

I used to wear Rare Gold when I was in my teenage times. This was the first perfume I had.
I have different favourite perfumes nowdays, but it still holds nice memories.
Very femine and strong classic scent (what I like). It draws compliments specially from men.
A hint of luxury for very good price!

ArtzGirl

I can sympathize with a number of the first reviews that mention this is a very strong, more mature fragrance... because when this first goes on- it is STRONG STUFF!!! Strong enough to give even the most hearty fragrance wearers a slight headache... so this is one that I would recommend spraying once, then dabbing on the wrists and neck... 4 squirts of this could be TOXIC!!!

After the initial dry down (about 30 minutes to an hour), this becomes quite nice... if not completely enchanting and totally mesmerizing.

I hate to be catty here, but I've seen a lot of reviews that seem to knock some of fragrances with depth and substance, if they have more depth than the typical bubble-gum variety sweet essences that are so prominent in stores like Victoria's Secret and The Body Shop. Some reviews toss the term "mature" about as if they were slamming these fragrances because they are designed to be worn by women, and not merely "girls"... this seems to taint the reviews of fragrances which may fit best on a more mature woman.

Yes. There is definitely a level of sophistication and elegance that comes about when you are no longer drawn to bubble gum sweet smelling cotton candy-ish fragrances. Sometimes this comes with women reaching a certain age, then again- it can just be the level of class and sophistication of the woman herself.

Imagine Hollywood casting an ingenue in the role fit for a QUEEN! Hey, there are women who can wear fragrances of depth - and those that should not even try! Let's face it - there is a huge difference in the woman that can take on the role of a true QUEEN-- and the one that can merely play the role of the Princess (this is not to say that the Princess will grow into the QUEEN in time, but for now... choose wisely. Only a QUEEN should wear certain fragrances with depth). Fragrance is much the same way. Sometimes your age, stage, level of refinement - or lack- thereof may dictate which clothing you wear... and which type of fragrance range you should wear. This is neither "right"- "wrong"... "good"-"bad"-- but simply a basic FACT!

Off my soap box...

Back to Rare Gold:
This fragrance is ageless and timeless, but if I were having to choose a certain age group that would feel comfortable wearing this - it would be someone who is above the age of 32, someone who has a level of sophistication.

It is in the range with a lot of the fragrances that were popular during the mid-80's, where it lasts longer and has a more "mature" fragrance, than a lot of the bubble gum/candy-ish fragrances that smell almost "cheap"... lining the major store retail walls these days. This is more in the range with classic, elegant, and sophisticated fragrances that require that a woman be mature enough to wear the fragrance, and not be worn by it. This is for the woman who knows where she is going, and is not afraid to take the steps necessary to get there. Wall flowers, need not apply.

This is one of those perfumes that really grows on you.

I first discovered this after trying Avon's Rare Pearls, which was something that I had smelled on a woman that I was passing in a hallway - and just had to ask her "what are you wearing?" because it smelled so good on her. I'm kind of a fragrance snob, in many ways-- and I was shocked that this was an Avon fragrance and not an upper end department or boutique store brand. The reason that I say this, the blend of fragrances is very sophisticated and wears really well... unlike most drug store variety fragrances. Whoever created Rare Pearls and Rare Gold - really has a "gifted nose" and have blended two fabulous fragrances. When I bought Rare Pearls and began wearing it -- I received a ton of compliments, I was so impressed with the fragrance that I read reviews for Rare Gold - and ordered it based on what customers were saying. A number commented that Rare Gold was very similar to Rare Pearls, but a bit "more business".

It is one of the fragrances that scores the highest in my "morning after skin test" - where you wake up and smell your arm - and it is a HEAVENLY fragrance! It must be one of the best fragrances with my individual body chemistry, because the smell that I wake up to in the morning, is really fabulously sexy, clean, uplifting, and really HOT!!!

The price point is one of the best features of this fragrance, but if I did not know that this was an Avon fragrance, I would have thought that it was a very high end designer department store brand. It is unusual - you won't have 20 people telling you that they know the name of your fragrance. Rare Gold is something that you don't smell every day. A number of people have asked what I am wearing - so this proves that it must be THAT good with my chemistry!

-------------

Rare Gold is in the exact range of one of my favorite perfumes, First. If you like Rare Gold - do me a favor and try First. Rare Gold seems to bit a slight bit more spicy and has a cinnamon/apricot type base to it, where as First seems to have a slightly stronger earthy, woodsy, and slight floral scent.

Meadowberg

I agree with PLUMPIE, I don't know why honey is not listed on the main notes as it is the first thing I smell when spraying this on me - a sharp, sweet honey smell. After that it settles down into a very warm and much more gentle floral scent. The warmth, honey and flowers reminds me of summery gardens. At first, you can smell it at a distance but over the course of the day it settles to your skin where it lasts for some impressive hours.

In my opinion, it is a lovely sweet and rich fragrance, although I can imagine it being perhaps too strong or sweet for some tastes.

karebear0099

I don't want to say dislike because I am more neutral about this fragrance, but it's definitely not for me. What I smell on me is a bubble gum type smell with amber poured over it. Yes, it smells kind of good, but at the same time a little odd and overpowering.

Woo! I did NOT like this one. My body chemistry maybe? I got a bottle for Christmas in '07 or '08 as a sort of Avon Mashup Christmas basket from my niece. I tried it a few times because I liked the bottle and I think Avon does really well with perfumes. They have been in the business of making them for a long time! Bug spray. That's all this poor dear could ever smell like for me. Even after awhile of being on my skin... bug spray mellowed down.

If the most important words in real estate is 'location' times three then the most important words in pefume is 'body chemistry' times 10!

tinarae

I like the smell of this juice from the bottle. But it is just too strong for me from the get-go, and does not work well with my chemistry! I may revisit this scent in a few years...

malikado

i had it twice long time ago a good one but now i think its not the same
it reminds me with roberto cavalli

PLUMPIE

I find this a luxrious classic classy daytime fragrance. A classic yellow floral with amber and ylang ylang. I also detect honey. It shares similarities with Spellbound, Ysatis, 5th avenue (but way less sweet tuberose),Bob Mackie (powdery almost fleshy peach) Bijan and Poeme (syrupy yellow florals) but most of all Organza on my skin. This is more what Organza used to smell like before they reformulated it. Unfortunately long discontinued in our Avon books in my country but can be picked up pretty cheap on the net which is where I sourced my bottle. I can see myself using this one up pretty quickly as it suits all occasions/seasons and makes a good choice when I can't choose between my vast collection of heavy orientals/heady Chypres. I settle for this and run out the door.

Kyi

The first time I smelled this scent, it was more mature, 'perfumey' and heavy than I thought it would be. It's not a bad smell however, but it does come off a little old school and timey to me. It also smells quite powdery and kinda reminds me of a luxurious washroom in a sense... not in a bad way though. It makes me think of a really nice bath/spa room in a casino that has a ton of air freshener, but it smells like clean linens, perfume, warm, flowery, with a classy antique richness... it smells familiar, like your grandma once brought you to this place when you were a young child. Overall, it is a very pleasant and full scent, not something I would personally wear often because of how heavy it smells and I don't know if I can pull off this mature smell. Seems to have very good silage and lasting power, people around you will definitely smell it.

Vintage ongoing relationship:
** ..and nearly 2 years later same bottle: This is now in my top 5 fanatically guarded precious scents. Vintage fan top remember though not the later formulae.
From something I wore just to spray on the bed for sleep ( God what a waste!) I am now ready to stand up and say. 'My name is pickledtink and I'm a Rare Gold-aholic.' It's getting hard to find with an increasing price tag but this fragrance does well bred impeccable manners combined with underlying erotic promise.

I have left this review intact over all it's facets and journey really just to demonstrate ( for me too) how delicate and personal the relationship is between our own chemistry and the magical interaction with the scents of flower, spice, earth and everything else which grows here.
It's so rich warm and creamy. Still no Citrus but warm, welcoming and the fade down is elusive. If you lay by an oak tree in the hot sun with a fleeting scent of soft flowers somewhere nearby whilst licking honey from a rosewood spoon you've got it.

Mary_Eh

A favourite of mine since I was about fourteen years old. It's so rich, warm, opulent, and just the right amount of fruitiness. I LOVE the immediate orange and peach notes. The ylang-ylang and amber set in afterwards and are just lovely.

Thatkid

I call this my Halloween/Winter fragrance because I can only wear it when it's cold outside, otherwise I get a headache. Just wearing the perfumed lotion is enough fragrance. But I do like this one.

KaelanLovesPerfume

Grapes and old women, no thank you........

so mystique nd elegant .. dis smell takes me t0 another w0rld <3 ^^
i love dis one so much

Exude mystery with this warm, opulent floral of Ylang-ylang and Bergamot, surrounding a lush heart of Jasmine and Gardenia entwined with precious woods, luxuriant Musk, amber.
I never thought this sounded good on avon. I have the old one(fan like cap) I love it so much. One of the few that last all day, its one of my top favorite avon fragrance.

pbluberry

I must admit I was a little turn off by avon fragrances. It just reminds me of moms. I got a bottle of this years ago for Christmas from a coworker and I was a little hessitant to try it until I read the good reviews on this site. I was looking to give away this bottle I had hidden in my closet for years. I'm kinda glad I gave it a try. I love the opening notes. Smells fruity and powdery on me, very delightful. But ohhh no the drydown.... there the old lady scent I remember it to be came in and I was really disappointed.

cdimmick2013

When I first smelled this, I thought it was too strong. Yet, when I let it dry, I really loved it. A little goes a long way with this one!

lisaivette

Rare Gold is one of my favorite perfumes. I have the new version. It has a very warm honey smell on my skin. Long lasting, but not overpowering. It reminds me of Bill Blass Hot, which I also love. I would definitely but it again.

bobkat

This reminds me of something from my childhood, but can't think what! It is a warm, rich scent with heady jasmine/gardenia notes and a warm amber resin undertone. No musk notes in here for me, and not really getting the sweet peach either. Lasts well on the skin and clothes, dries down to a lovely comforting cosy warm floral, but not in your face....wouldn't describe it as Oriental, there's no real spice in there, but if you are no fan of jasmine/gardenia scents....steer clear...for some this may be headache inducing!

So just got it...smells like Guerlain Jardin de Bagatelle...(sorry if this has been said before)

darlingdraven

I agree with many other reviews that this is very sweet with peach, jasmine, and amber. It isn't a bad perfume at all and very affordable however this is strong and lasts long; it could because too sweet if used too much.

b.a.denney

I used to have this when it first came out. I don't recall if I wore it much. Now when I smelled it at my local Avon store it just smells way too strong for me.

perhapspersephone

I bought Rare Gold to just have all 3 of the rares. I really didn't expect to like it . In fact I was sure I wouldn't . What a shock. I can't stop smelling my wrist. I smell the peach and the jasmine. Its so creamy and sweet. It has jusy knocked my socks off.

Just a beautiful, beautiful fragrance !

missk

I'm the kind of person that's always out for a bargain, and occasionally I give Avon a try in hopes that one of their inexpensive fragrances will sweep me off my feet. Rare Gold is nice and indeed very pleasant, however it's not the kind of fragrance that sends me over the moon.

Peach at the best of times, especially when dominant, is often too juicy and sour on my skin. The peach accord in Rare Gold is softened a little by the aldehydes and white florals, which in turn makes it a touch more agreeable on my skin. In fact I rather like its sparkly and crisp opening on me, I found that it showed a lot of promise.

I actually expected Rare Gold to be more powdery than it was, I am quite surprised to find it more of a peachy floral than anything else. It has a somewhat classic feel that I can only assume would appeal to a majority of women. It could be worn either casually or formally.

Unfortunately Rare Gold is a little linear in terms of composition. The drydown smells much the same as the opening, however on my skin it also had an added mustiness that wasn't all that pleasant.

The longevity was average, yet a lot longer lasting than I thought it would be, and the sillage was fairly soft. Looking over the reviews, many people seem to have worn this when it first came out. I wonder, do they still wear it now?

Eridanshay1

Bob Mackie with extra citrus and neroli thrown in for good measure. I smell a lot of orange flower as well. I used to sell Avon but never wore this because it felt to intense and "grown up" for me then. I'm older now and appreciate fragrance more than ever. I ordered a bottle of this last week and am anxiously awaiting....Besitos!xo

gazelle

I'm one of the Fragranticans whose body chemistry devours fragrance. Some of my "expensive" ones to me, last an hour or maybe I just can't smell them long enough to distinguish individual notes I'm familiar with. I've yet to isolate pineapple in Bob Mackie, the main reason I purchased it. But I tried to isolate mandarin and orange blossom in Rare Gold and the notes are so blended and very potent with my chemistry, my eyes popped out. What gives? Avon rarely reveals so many notes for their compositions. How can this AVON frag, classified as cheap, chemical, and linear, by many, last so long on me? Surely, this will stay on my skin long enough to discern the citrus notes which I like and want. Just a comment about longevity of a $15 fragrance. Not all Avon has such longevity for me, no,no. Thanks for letting me express my thoughts.

marydoan90

My mom has the original Rare Gold (different bottle) and it smells DIVINE on her! :)
I usually dislike floral, but the sweetness from the peach balances it out so perfectly. When I smelled this, I thought it was an expensive perfume. My mom's bottle just says "Rare Gold" on it, so I didn't know who made the perfume.
It smells very beautiful, elegant and classy.
I haven't tested this perfume on me yet, but if it smells as well on me as it does on my mom, I'll be sure to get a bottle for myself (and hope that the new Rare Gold hasn't changed much from the original!).

PerfumePatty

Rare Gold smells luxurious, with a mix of white flowers, fruit, amber and a touch of honey.
Warning: VERY sweet!!! Use sparingly or it could be offensive and overpowering. A couple of sprays will dry down to a lovely rich scent.
Pros: Excellent sillage and longevity; extremely affordable; smells luxurious.
Cons: Borders on cloying (def: to cause distaste or disgust by supplying with too much of something originally pleasant, especially something rich or sweet). Reminded me of Giorgio Beverly Hills and JP Classique.

ecofreak2001

I gave it a try...not for me. It was a gift from my cousin, since a patient of her gave it to her and obviously didn't like it. Gave it a try, it was too strong and bitter for my taste (and I like strong perfumes....). I also gave it away; I guess my chemistry does not go with it.

Tovah

Rare Gold is what I was wearing when I met my husband. Back then it was a radiant floral oriental that was sexy and unusual. Everyone commented on it and I think I boosted Avon's sales in 1997 because people kept asking where to buy Rare Gold! Years later when I wore Jean Paul Gaultier Classique, my husband thought it was Rare Gold...so if you're craving the original Rare Gold, maybe Classique will work as a substitute. I haven't worn Rare Gold in years and years, because I was afraid to try it again having read that the reformulation is a horror. I didn't want to ruin all the happy memories. However, Fragrantica has restored my enthusiasm, with all these lovely reviews, so I will check out Avon's website and get myself some more Rare Gold.!

jojo jojo

didn't love its tooo strong for me

Lil Mju

This is my first perfume ever and it gives me great memories.. <3 my mom gave it to me when I was five or something. I like this and I don't think it smells cheap - vice versa, it smells expensive and luxorious to me. In the opening, it's a little too much - I think it's the citruses.. Then it blends into feminine and sensual musk, neroli and jasmine. Not my favorite but nice.

logicmuppet

I'm finding it difficult to get excited about this one. The good news is that it dries down to peaches and cream, although not particularly strong nor long-lasting. The bad news is that sprayed on clothing, it retains an alcoholic "I'm wearing perfume!" note. It smells good, just not great.

pickledtink

Vintage bottle with fan shape top:

Absolute disaster. Bought it blind as it has so many good reviews but although it doesn't seem to have gone off it's horrible on me from start to finish.
First off smells sickly sweet cheap and very chemical with no hint of citrus notes whatsoever.

30 minutes in and resisting the desperate urge to scrub it off it calms down somewhat to unconvincing Tuberose/Vanilla but still a stinker with something so bitter it makes my nose burn when I sniff my skin and I'm wondering if it might be useful as drain clearer.

Finally I'm left with a bearable but not pleasant powdery cheap talc.
Hate it.

Update:
Well who knew?
I've tried this several times since and it bears out the truth that we all interact with fragrances so differently according to our hormones, what we ate and where we're at.
It's never going to be in my top 10 but have found I'm favouring it for when I'm swanning around working home alone or as a fairly deep funky bedtime ( alone) choice. It's still clunky in execution and development and lacks that magic which a perfectly constructed perfume brings in it's elegant seamless dry down. However this juice is a shameless rather raunchy saloon girl with a gun in her garter, no table manners, too much lipstick and certainly no lady but she'd never let you down in a stand up knock down brawl.

One of the few fragrances from Avon that I like. It is nothing special, but a nice fragrance all the same. Another poster commented that it reminded her of Mackie by Bob Mackie...I have thought the same thing since the first time I smelled it. It is far better than Rare Pearls from Avon.

to me this is a very comforting scent it reminds me of the good time i spent with some friends, its just so warming and comforting.

I got this for a couple of quid in a charity shop and I'm glad I didn't fork out too much for it. It's a bit of an 'Amarige light' to me, but lacking the uniqueness of the former. I find it warm, wearable but a bit boring. My husband finds it 'too sweet' though he likes Dior Poison. I definately prefer rare pearls to this one.

I love this. It depends on my mood also. It turns VERY VERY SWEET on me!

I'm not usually a huge fan of the floral/floral fragrances. I prefer more depth and layers in scents, but this one is quite nice. The opening is a strong floral, but the dry down is much nicer/lighter. There are hints of citrus and orange blossom that do not supersede the floral scent. The citrus is really behind the scene in the opening. It reminds me of a really nice smelling Este'Lauder's "Beautiful". If you've read my review of Beautiful, you'll know I'm not a fan of that scent. This lends a little more youth to the heavy floral scent, but it is still not suitable for really young women. If you love florals, this one should be a winner for you. Floral, not offensive. Pretty and unusual thanks to the floral/ambery drydown.

I had this one and liked it for every day. It's a light smell and seems to fade way too soon. Loved the smell if only it would stick around longer.

I just received my UPS shipment of my Avon order, which included a set (bath, lotion, and purse size perfume) of Rare Gold. I find it lovely. It works well with my chemistry and I'm loving the warm floral scent. I just used a small spritz on the wrist and small spritz on the neck and that seemed to be just right. It's a heady scent so I could see how using too much may be headache inducing. I used a bit of the body lotion on my hands as well and was pleased to find it moisturizing and softening and not at all greasy. Nice quality. Of course, this campaign they're having the full size perfume included in the set for the same price instead of the purse size, which chaps my hide a bit, but oh well...overall, I don't regret the purchase and can see me using this up. Time will tell if I like it enough to reorder it, as I have with Rare Pearls and Timeless, which I keep stock of. I definitely get the comparison to Amarige - not identical, but in the same family for sure.
