Definitely feels like the 80's and I most definitely get the cat piss. Thankfully though, it's only in the opening. I get the visions of metallic spandex leotards, overload of Aquanet hairspray, and neon lights. They did well. Another evocative masterpiece from Amouage. Bravo.

Jepsonia

interesting. yea. I t smells like cat urine. I sprayed some in the little paper sample box - haven't tried it on my skin yet. I'm new to Amouage and enjoying all of the fragrances. They are all unique!

ginandrice

At Imitation's core, the fresh, soapy aldehydes blend smoothly with the tart grape-juice-esque crispness of the fruity accord, as well as the sweet muskiness of the classy, expensive-smelling florals.

The composition is commendably cohesive, but dichotomous: the florals and aldehydes are clean but the black currant and incense are dirty; the aldehydes are cool but the licorice and incense are warm; the florals are honey-sweet but the black currant is tangy-tart; and all the notes smell fresh, but none of them smell light.

It's classy and refined, yet arch and challenging; a bit cut-throat; a bit playful. Like vintage Chanel with a loose post-modern twist.

I don't really get much of the woodiness until nearly two hours in, when the aldehydes and black currant cut out, at which point the whole thing dries down into a classy balsamic wood scent, as soft and smooth as warm silk.

loves2read

At first I feel incense, although it should be at the end. Then I smell aldehydes, and because of that I find it very similar to sparkling Stairway to Heaven, however, a little mixed up with a weaker incense. Quite an interesting result.

I enjoyed reading some of the reviews here :)

This perfume is a straight up "weird, but kinda addictive" to me. I usually hate blackcurrant because it's too sour, too sweet and kind of smells like cat urine to me. The blackcurrant here has a faint vibe of that, but the entire perfume is very base-heavy to me. Very woody, kind of patchouli-y and smells almost edible, but in a weird niche way. If you're like me and hate blackcurrant, give this a try nonetheless.
Strong projection and good longevity.

Greg & Claire

I love this. But i think it's been discontinued. I got an awesome clone from Perfume Oil Expressions which is a beast and one of the first perfumes I've worn that got me lots of compliments. There's something about this that really is nostalgic but it's still modern & chic.

malenapo

It is a blackcurrant licorice combination. I have a full bottle for sale.

AMOUAGE Imitation Woman
Pierre Negrin 2018
Unisex imo
“Life Imitates art”

Like this fascinating bottle the scent itself as well is neon colored and a chameleon. It sounds strange but after smelling the scent the term makes sense. First of all the scent is very unique and different than all other Amouages. Secondly the combination of notes is very interesting.

White ORANGE BLOSSOM, JASMINE and ROSES in the opening are surrounded with captivating mix of BLACK CURRANT BUDS which is not juicy (it’s not the fruit itself, it’s buds!), ALDEHYDES which is not soapy or frosted, and LICORICE which is not sweet neither Anis. YLANG-YLANG in the opening is not tropical like sweet or sour. Nothing in this scent can’t be imagined with the list of notes. It’s one of the most difficult to put into the words.

All the notes are somewhat abstract and something which you haven’t experienced before. The result is vivid, a little bit vinyl like but not synthetic, nor cloying. It’s very enchanting, it’s airy enough yet vibrant without being sticky or headache-inducing. After wearing it a couple of times you will notice that it’s astoundingly wearable, versatile and charming yet totally unique. The drydown is heavenly and polished , even intoxicating, with SANDALWOOD, PATCHOULI and INSENCE while all the other notes stay there until the end creating this magical concoction.

This scent is called here Chypre Floral which it is not. I don’t know why so many scents are called as “Chypre” nowadays without its characteristic note pyramid.

Men’s counterpart is not for me. It’s very artistic but too plastic imo. Definitely worth to try though.

c0rtland

so vivid. amazing use of aldehydes and blackcurrant. wow! study bitcoin.

fyre92

Black currant and pine needle tea. It’s very sexy

VanillaaManiaa

A masterpiece, almost indescribable…it’s more a feeling, a time and place. So unique there are only a handful of occasions I would be led to wear this…A whole year after first opening the bottle, it is much better than at first sniff…blackcurrant syrup, like ribena, meets hot vinyl fresh off the record player, a generous dash of YlangYlang, smoky incense blended with the most stunning patchouli, and a sprinkle of liquorice. It make’s me think of sweltering 70’s nights in NYC, of smoky lounges and drug fuelled discos, of glamour and seedy opulence, and being carefree! I prefer this in warm temperatures- it opens up beautifully on the skin and radiates all day. I can see it being polarising for sure, not a safe blind buy - however I did just that, and will never part with this beauty so it was a win for me

Emad Alhakim

well blended! I could smell something between One Man Show Emerald Edition & Lapidus Pour Homme in this nice fragrance!

chromatica

Another masterpiece from Amouage. I love it because it's such a chameleon! On the first try, I got a lot of black currant and cat urine. It gave off a really retro vibe, and I shied away from Imitation for some time. I tried it in hotter weather later and I was astounded -- intoxicating white flowers, ylang-ylang and a whiff of aldehydes. The dry-down is magnificent, really... I get a lot of incense and creamy, sexy, poisonous white flowers with fruits and aldehydes dancing along somewhere in the background, adding up to the complexity of the scent.

Strong sillage, average lasting power in extremely hot and humid weather, excellent lasting power at 77°F and below. I'd say wear it at any time of the day since it gives one such a badass vibe. It makes a stern, crispy aldehydic black currant in winter and in autumn and a seductive, eccentric, modern incense-y fruity frag in summer and spring.
Definitely not a crowd-pleaser but I had some people comment on it saying it smells amazing.

Shawn330

Black currant on full blast almost goes cat pissy it will burn your nose for sure, but the florals come in and freshen it up! Beautiful bright aldehydes and licorice come in and make it even fresher! Than incense and patchouli come in and give it the signature amouage smell. Absolutely beautiful and long lasting ! Dark, loud, fresh, skretchy, floral, and fruity all in one perfume masterpiece that’s been masterfully blended. The perfume gives me neon light vibes in the dark.

Petula009

Juicy black currant. Smells like a cocktail with heavy dose of black currant syrup. Problem is, I am not a fan of black currant even though I have to appreciate the crafstmanship here. The initial spray is borderline nauseating in combo with the rose and orange blossom. Same feeling as Mango Manga by Montale with the woodsy notes. It's just not for me.
Vibes: for the lovers of black currant, juicy
Form: 2ml spray

skybunny

This is what a prostitute at Lord Licorice's Licorice Castle in Candy Land would wear. It's so good.

XeniaKoneva

Nothing smells quite like it, in -20 it smells like honey and ylang-ylang, in temperatures above 0 it smells like a blackcurrant cocktail with honey, mint, and tones of ice. I wish I could write a long and sophisticated poem about how amazing this scent is, but I can't find the right words.
If you blind-bought it like me please don't give up. It may seem challenging at first, but later on, you'd want to throw away everything you have and leave only Imitation on your shelf. Blackcurrant is a challenging note, indeed! At first, I hated it, but after 3 days of wearing it, it became my the most favorite scent of all.
is it challenging? Yes. Is it polarising? Yes! Imitation is one of those amusing scents to wear due to how different it opens up depending on the climate, mood, time of the day, etc.
I would not recommend it for those who are skeptical of a blackcurrant note in general, and also those who prefer scents that are more linear. If you get Imitation, you are in for a fascinating ride, better be ready for it.

Sniffathon

This is strange and a little challenging. I can’t quite discern the top notes but my nose is thrust straight into the strange intermingling of licorice, blackcurrant and aldehydes. There’s an airy whisp of a white floral floating somewhere in the background. This isn’t “woody” in the traditional sense and doesn’t quite dry down to a lovely warm woody expectation. Instead the mid notes remain albeit joined by a couple of meek friends, incense and patchouli. I’m glad I resisted blind buying this instead opting for a sample. A little too challenging to consider a purchase, but complex and niche.

c0rtland

Very juicy. Beautiful

hellofasmell

This reminds me of being in a restaurant with burning incense candles on a warm and slightly humid day. It's got spiciness, honey, some musk, hints of clay, and some floral notes lingering underneath as well. After a while, the incense isn't as overbearing and the floral and jasmine notes become more apparent.

I feel like wearing this on a hot day will make any heat/stuffiness more unpleasant, yet a previous review suggested it might even thrive in those conditions. I'll have to try it again when it's warmer.

Blackcurrant syrupy candy sprayed with cat pee. I love it

Enrium

Imitation Woman is a sweet, rich floral chypre with fruity nuances, some spiciness and a nice smoky drydown. It bears some similarity to Lush Karma, a scent I've recently tested, but it is more upmarket and the cola bottle comparison is less on the nose.

Imitation opens with sweet, fruity notes from intial spray, with cordial-like blackcurrant leading the way. Sweet, heady white florals follow, giving body to this scent. Tropical ylang ylang is most evident, while orange blossom enhances the fruitiness. Restrained aldehydes add a slight airiness, giving a hint of brightness to the rich florals. As it develops, it becomes more powdery, with rose coming to the fore. Some clean jasmine rounds it out. The florals are heady and sweet with a lush, fruity edge.

As it develops, soft spiciness emerges thanks to the anise and perhaps the incense. A dry sandalwood note grounds everything nicely, and the incense adds a slightly smoky effect that complements the woodiness beautifully. Patchouli forms the modern chypre base, adding a nice earthiness to the drydown. It fades to a sweet-spicy skin scent with remnants of the sweet florals remaining until final fade. Sillage is strong and longevity is moderate.

Imitation is a high-quality, feminine-leaning transeasonal scent, featuring a creative composition. Not my top Amouage scent, but a great addition to a great perfume house. 4/5.

anastasiagurschi86

I don't understand how this is so underrated with just 3.90 out of 5.00. This is The Masterpiece of the brand, next to Ubar. Love, love, love!

abhijit7011

I have been here to write the review of Imitation woman quite a few times before. It's like a deja-vu moment for me. I could never write it. By the time i can put pen to paper (fingers to keys on the keyboard) I forget all about the notes and whatnot that constitute this fruity bamboozlement that is Imitation W O M A N! and yes, I'm a man. and it's also true that I got this for my girlfriend who (thankfully) rejected it but it was always love-at-first-sniff for me (I'll tell you all about it soon) and I only decided to let it go because it would have stayed in the fam (wink wink)

Okay, I'll confess. I have no review to write for this sweet confusion called Imitation Woman. the notes are beyond me. I'll leave it to Kafkaesque to write a snobby academic essay on the note breakdown and unfurl other chemicular (is that a word?) mysteries. I'll just say what happened and how I felt. I take these saxophone lessons and have no prior experience in music. Dabbling a little in music theory with an amazing teacher. I bought the cheapest saxophone money could buy and kept daydreaming about being the next Coltraine in about forty more years (provided I practice ten hours a day or so). So I got the sample and sprayed a couple. Swear to god, if my saxophone had a smell it would be this. this sweet, fizzy fruity, jammy, ylang-ylang-y, bamboozlement coming out of the neck and horns of the golden alto. It's cacophonic sillage choking the neighbours next door. I call up my girlfriend and rave about it. "If my saxophone had a smell, this would be it", I remember saying. And i swear i didn't even see the "An olfactive imitation of New York City’s multiculturalism in the 1970s this floral aldehyde fragrance is a tribute to an iconic era" scribbled at the back of the sample card. The description is spot on and Pierre Negrin is a genius (duh!) The guy also made Black Orchid and comparisons can be drawn. Not to say they are similar by any stretch of the imagination but... they have similar dark backbones. Nocturnal animals of different kinds but built on the same chassis, as it were. I spray it every time i practice the sax (progress is sloww but steadddyyy) and I'm transported to the heart of a world marked by excesses, flamboyance, and richness.

Neferite

I got it blindly… was tempted to buy this scent, because I’m a fan of patchouli and a fan of oriental type odour… Must admit, wasn’t happy from the first spay! At the beginning what I could smell was only a strong and very sweet black currant note hitting my nose… (I do not like sweet perfumes!!!!)
After sometime I realized I’m enjoying the smokiness on me!!! Such a great perfume! Another peace of art by house of AMOUAGE! 😍🥰💫 this perfume has a CHARACTER! Just wow! Nothing to compare with Guerlain “La petite Robe Noir”!
Though, if I would need to choose between Imitation woman and Figment woman - would definitely go for Figment woman!
To sum up, I love this perfume indeed! So it’s in my TOP 5 for sure!

Again… I’m taking a bow to the house of Amouage! U guys r masterpiece creators! Creating something so different and unique! When I’m wearing these perfumes I feel like “one in a million”!
Thank You 🥰🤍🤍🤍🤍💫

Update July 15th 2022: it’s finally the correct weather (high 80’s & humid) for Imitation to bloom.
To me this is a strictly hot weather scent. Warmth allows all the prickly jagged aldehydic sour berry elements melt into the licorice, woody incense-
-rather than sit awkwardly on top (when worn in cooler temps).
It’s still quite eccentric. I have to be in a specific mood to wear this as it can easily wear you.
Quality, sillage & longevity amazing as was all of the Chong era Amouage. Meh about the recent stuff.

annema

Strong black current and aldehydes. Mixed with licorice and rose it has some sort of vintage perfume feeling and I can see how some people would appreciate this. Quality is excellent (hope so at that price tag). Smells natural and expensive as it is. I would say this is an amazing perfumery creation. It's perfectly mixed and different from your other typical female perfumes containing black current and rose. If you're a fan of classical feminine perfumes try this.
At the price tag, I won't buy though. Maybe in 10 years I'll revisit that perfume (if still on the market) and get a bottle.

Scentsibility85

My daughter told me I smelled like SpongeBob’s crabby Patties candy when I walked past her :-)

Chanel de Lanvin

This perfume is like no other in the Amouage collection, proof of this is that it is a creative composition of the artistic spirit of Ch.Chong.
It should fit our personality as perfume lovers and not superficial criticism if we don't like it, which is also valid for other perfumes.
It's not something for the general public, that's for sure, but you have to tame it from the first spray and find your soul, for me it's a success.
It's not a sillage scent but it has character, don't use multiple sprays.

Ioi

Poison but make it toothpaste. The delicious berry accord gets murdered by minty eucalyptus and it's not a dark and mysterious crime either - more like a bang upside the head with a pot lid. It gets revived later and comes back paired with something very sweet. Overall it's too high on the 'Aren't I niche' factor and too low on the actual magic.

supersaiyan

Such a strange and interesting one this is, like Enchanted Forest with a ton more loud, sour-candy, prickly black currant and some aldehydes. I adore it but it's a tough wear.

miriamcarothers

I’ve been wanting this perfume since I first tried it in the sadly now closed Osswald store in soho in 2018.
Finally was like- fuck it and bought it from some rando seller on eBay. While I don’t doubt it’s authenticity- it’s just weird af to spray at home. Maybe it’s the climate? Dry & cold NYC fall/winter doesn’t suit this fragrance?
All I get is sour. I’m not getting any of the groovy fruity mayhem like when sprayed in a store.
Oh wait- now the sour has calmed down and I smell the incense.
My husband loves it on me and said the sandalwood & licorice combo does it for him. I guess I like it a bit more knowing he digs it. Def need to put it away and try again in like- June. Also should probably try it against one in a store- although I really don’t think this is a fake.
I find my Amouage Epic to be way too batshit at home when it smelled heavenly in Osswald. Maybe everything smelled better at Osswald! Ugh RIP Covid closed perfume shops! 😭

lovetribe

black currant, banana ylang ylang, licorice and aldehydes and rose. nothing more. very feminine.

ingeneuxo

-Woody fruity? Now, that's a new genre I can get behind. (Unlike fruity leather..that's just plain weird.)
-Imitation Woman is a playful scent that's well-bridged between the spectrums of 'woody' and 'fruity' by its mildly spicy notes.
-Licorice notes don't stand out massively to me. So even if you tend to dislike this note, do give it a go! It's an interesting one to check out for sure.
-I'm not sure it's my thing, but it's a genre of scent worth getting your nose on next time you stop by a niche perfume boutique. (-)

jbeans81

This fragrance has rocketed into my top 5. I bought a sample about 6 months ago and was very unsure of it. However it was a dabber sample, and one thing about Amouage in my opinion, they really need to be sprayed on. So I purchased a little spray decant and was immediately hooked and ordered a full bottle. In the opening, I smell Orange Blossom, syrupy Black Currant, and Rose. The licorice and the incense/aldehyde blend almost comes across like vetiver. It is a little bit unisex. I could see it being controversial because some people really don’t like black currant or licorice. As it settles into the heart, the syrupy sweet black currant continues along with the licorice and aldehydes and smokey rose colored incense. Sandalwood and patchouli show up here and there but they are very quiet in the background, supporting the heart notes. I am not normally into aldehydes, but this is not Chanel No 5 aldehydes. These are blended gorgeously into the black currant giving it a cool lift. This fragrance lasts for hours and hours projecting that spicy sweet fruity goodness. This can be warn in a hot summer or a cool fall. This is one of those fragrances that every time I spray it I think “I could just wear this one and this one only for the rest of my life”. (obviously I couldn’t really, but that’s always my first reaction lol) This one is definitely not blind buy safe, but if you are intrigued at the notes, it’s worth sampling.

HollywoodNovaBaby

This stuff is so weird… very strong and fruity but not a natural fruit, it’s almost piney which takes it in the direction of household cleaner for me. It’s very loud and just seems synthetic and not at all pretty. Not appealing to me at all.

P-Nay

Amouge Imitation: is no imitation at all. This is an "original", daring, most certainly not for everyone, an all in your face type of fragrance; makes a statement for sure! It's a very challenging and over beyond luxury. Very strange, very different! No rhyme or reason with the notes listed, they're all over the place but come together uninterrupted. A fruity accord that sticks with me all day long, together with, the smell of a deep, boozy, undertone accord that's not listed. Fruity, citrusy, tangy, musky and very Aldehydic but not in a Chanel #5 direction they're definitely present, however, it could be the black currant taming the top heaviness of the Adelhydes . This fragrance is certainly a well mingled, strong and solid, out on a limb scent. I don't like to smell like everyone else so this fragrance was made just for me! Does not smell like anything in my collection at present nor could it be comparable to any other fragrance! Love love love this out of the world scent!!! No imitation, by no means!

fyre92

Black currant syrup, sharp pine like notes, rose water, woody notes, yellow banana floral. This smells like the color red. This is a red lip with remnants of a black currant jam lingering on the lips. Rose scented incense burns in the background and a jar of dried ylang and honeysuckle sit in waiting for you to steep them in pine needle tea. It’s a sexual red feeling and it’s edible. It’s LOUD. Spray far away and let it lightly mist you. Enchantress.....

RottigrlNYC

This one has all of the best notes I love, I should love it. But something is making this one very weird, for the first half hour. Then it’s beautiful so I bought a full bottle . I am obsessed with smelling this one so I always have to spray some on the back of my hand. I don’t know if i love it, it’s more of an addiction to the scent. It’s a keeper and a 7/10. Only coz it doesn’t last. But nothing lasts long on me . I have to use a primer. Eccentric molecule is perfect for making perfumes last .

brumbarche

This so interesting and may take getting to know it and getting used to, like most from Amouage. I love this fragrance. It opens very juicy - with a double shot of very polished black currant juice note, aldehydes and incense accompanying jasmine and ylang, over a bed of spiced up by licorice patchouli. But the last doesn’t come out until the drydown, when it keeps lingering on fabric for quite some time. This drydown is similar to Florence by Roberto Cavalli - a bit more mainstream white floral patchouli, more subdued, which you may give a try if Imitation is a bit to daring or weird to you. I really love Imitation in all of its phases.

roseyessence

Okay I have been trying to figure out how to describe this, so here I go:

Plasticky/Smells like new shiny vinyl record

Bubble gummy{anyone remember bazooka gums from the 70's 80's 90's?)

Sweet like the sugar in the bubble gums

Fruity, very fruity

A bit of wood, just a tiny bit

A few flowers to add to the mix(I detect rose)

Aldehydes.

If polyester bell bottom pants, wedge shoes, tied dyed clothes, head bands and Farrah Faucet had a smell it would be THIS IMITATION WOMAN.

This is a perfume Charlie's Angels, Diane Carol, etc would have worn.

All of the above descriptions are all in a good way, well blended. For me it is all season friendly.
I absolutely love it. It reminds me a bit of Memoir woman and epic woman.

I am still getting to know her, because Imitation woman is a chameleon.

Stay safe everybody. Covid is real.

zu_misha88

Sniffing from the bottle, it smelled fresh so tried to wear it as my fragrance today 82F. Initial spray was fine but about an hour in, their was a note that made me nauseous. I could not stand it I had to take another shower this morning just to get all the scent out.

Not a bad fragrance for others I am sure, just not on me.

Zentocs

Wooow, this in one of my favorite Amouage- it is absolute for warmer weather! The first half hour is a little bit strong but then it will be softer and a real fruity beauty. Very unique- it is extemely long lasting (double time as Amouage Dia) and it has huge sillage. 2 spays is really enogh!!! I think my 100 ml bottle will lasts for 100 year. For me the main actor is blackcurrant and incense. LOVE LOVE LOVE!!!

Pikkumyy

I’m trying this today and at first it was pleasant. Sweet, warm and fruity. Nothing impressive but beautiful. Then after 15 minutes a metallic smell kicks in, I guess it’s the aldehydes. It’s a hot and wet metal kind of smell that makes me nauseous. 2 hours have passed and it hasn’t improved one bit. Not for me, I’m afraid

osy2017

If this can be considered as a warm fragrance will classify as such, because gives a sense of warming sun on a bowl of fruits and berries that you eat. It is a very interesting fragrance and the bottle is stunning. Lovely especially in winter for me, will see how opens in warmer months. Be careful with dosage can suffocate, it is very strong and very long lasting!

My feelings about this fragrance flip-flopped quite a bit while I was testing it. On paper, the initial spray was underwhelming - very sweet and fruity, which seemed disappointingly one dimensional, but I grew to like it after a few hours, with the smoker dry down. I tested it on myself, and was shocked - the blackcurrant note was still strong, but once the fragrance is on skin, the incense is STRONG. I understand how it might give some people "granny" vibes, and while that doesn't always bother me, the opening is just too loud for my taste. But 15 minutes in, and the incense became darker, smokier, and some almost vanillic notes appeared. The drydown of this fragrance is right up my alley, but I will have to test it more extensively before I can commit to a full bottle. Like most Amouage fragrances, this is definitely worth testing before you buy - the house is known for making unique, and sometimes difficult scents, and body chemistry plays a huge role in how the scent reveals itself to the wearer.

LizzieDee

As others have identified, there's a big top note of blackcurrant, and to me it smells as if the fruit has started fermenting. It's not nice.

Rapidly, however, a smoky note comes through. Early on, it is cigarette smoke, which doesn't sound great but it actually works well with the fading fruit. As time goes on, Imitation softens and there's a faint whiff of incense and woods. By that stage, it's a skin scent on me.

The heart and base notes remind me of another Amouage scent: Portrayal. However, Portrayal has massive longevity. Portrayal is also reminiscent of cigarette smoke but it just seems to me in a different, higher league. Imitation strains too hard after individuality and ends up not that nice.

I envy the reviewers who love Imitation. Whether it's their body chemistry or just different tastes, Imitation obviously bowls some people over. However you react to it, Amouage is one of the most interesting houses around at the moment. I will always love my classic Mitsouko and No 19 but Guerlain and Chanel are chasing the mass-market nowadays. They are very successful at this but I find I am more likely to be asked what I am wearing when it's from Amouage.

DemonicCupcake

First spray is awful, don't judge this when it's wet, reminds me of having strep throat, the smell of cough syrup and menthol cough drops. However, once dried and mellowed, turns into a musky sweet black current. Something about the scent reminds me of a Portsmouth New Hampshire coastal gift shop, the blend of the incense stand, locally made candles and imported perfumes. It's a really nostalgic scent for me, smells more like a place then a person, but I love it, but beware the overspray!

It's a very Guerlain style, especially "La petite robe noire" Line.
Nice, cloudy rose, emerging from a bouquet of red fruits and blackcurrant union, which stays almost inchanged through almost 5 hours.
Stable projection. Safe parfum, devoid of olfactory aggression all it's way through.
A huge like fromm me.

I heard about this perfume, and I was looking for a good summer night perfume.
Reading the comments, I saw notes on "licorice", "granny splash", etc.
Now, it might be a question of skin chemistry, as other people also say, but for me, this doesn't smell like blackcurrants, or rose, or licorice (thought it might even have all that within). To me it smells like a linden tree in bloom, heavily warmed by sunset.
I smelled it once, and I decided to buy it (and it's not a cheap purchase, to call it an impulse!) - absolute love for this perfume which, on my skin, smells like no other perfume! That's if you just let it be, and smell what comes off. If you stick your nose in it, it might be a tad sweet. <3 <3 <3

A beautiful rose floating on a crystal clear lake.

Yes it is a strange perfume. The opening is quite sick and later becomes more easy. I smell a kind of flower thats very strange and very dominant. I dont know what flower that is.

Sillage is good. My car is filled with its smell the moment i got in. Distracting me while im driving. But im good sniffing it.

The dry down is quite masculine and very pleasant. So i love it.

Regardless of how strange it is, however it retains its uniqueness and pleasant that asking me to buy. Niche collector must have!

To me this perfume deserves an Award!

What went wrong here? Lovely notes but I get a very sharp unpleasant not - my guess the Licorice/Insence-mix that get ugly on my skin- it gets very sharp and almost plastic, This one is not for me.

Imitation is definitely a unique perfume. I can see how it can be polarizing for some; it's very unusual. Reading the reviews, it seems it behaves differently on everybody, so here's what I got on my skin.

The opening is all blackcurrant and licorice and it's very in your face. However, it settles down a few minutes later and I can start smelling the aldeydes along with some ylang ylang. I still get blackcurrant in the background during this phase too. The dry down is smoky incense with aldehydes and nuances of the blackcurrant.

Imitation is a beast mode perfume, at least on my skin. To me, it's a mysterious and strange perfume (it's strange in a good way). This is not going to be everyone's cup of tea, so definitely try it first. This doesn't smell like anything else I own, so on my want list it goes.

hadassa

Very interesting, unusual, a little bit strange. Starts off with sweet and tangy blackcurrant, very very pronounced and vivid; and icy, cold aldehydes. Just for a reference - blackcurrant in Ombre Dans L'Eau is much more herbal, leafy, and fresh.

The most interesting part commences in half an hour, it's the smoke. Oh, the Smoke. It's very strong, - incense? - it's borderline cigarettes smoke here. I guess that might gross out many people, the undertone really is like... as if you were in a cafe, did not smoke yourself, but someone around you did and here you are, you smell very slightly of someone else's cigarettes. It gets smoother and less in your face (or nose, for that matter) hours after, and it becomes more patchouli over time. The base is a bit "traditionally masculine".

Honestly speaking I really like this part, it smells of a city life, open airs, clubs, posh bars, - yeah, alcohol, nonchalance, long cigarettes, cigars, mixed with expensive perfume. The perfume part reminds me a tiny bit of Euphoria, CK, yeah, really. Dark fruity purple patch, the way it was when it just came out, with Natalia Vodianova and her full lips on the poster. I used to be an elf looking teenager back then who smoked and still remained fresh, with rosy cheeks. Imitation reminds me of this period.

It's definitely purple.

Not a safe scent, beware. I have already met many perfumistas who said it's "ugh", not to mention regular people who keep saying "what is THIS smell?" with horror in their eyes, hehe.

I do love it and want a full bottle just for myself - not sure where to wear it to though.

myra83

i have it so disopointed it wont last in hot weather.. i do realy love the smell.. if compare to epic interlude journey fate jubilation and all library collection this ismost weak for longevity silage is boom but doesnt hold after 2 3 hours its gone..figment men and women would be better than imitation for me.. love hugs from malaysia

I need to make it justice. First time I tried Imitation right after launch I only tried it on paper. Please if you really want to try this scent and give it a chance try on skin. It has nothing to do with the test on paper strip. On paper strip the ozone and blackcurrant notes come our very sharp I found, which made me qualify it as very green and cold. On skin however a different story. It has a real evolution in 3 phases and since it is Amouage, yes, it is still present long enough to actually get through this evolution (so many fragrances today disappear before even getting to the middle notes or it’s all accelerate into rapid vanishing). And now I understand the note that puzzled me in the beginning. It’s the ozone note that first I had a hard time to place it, somewhere in between very cold and greenish. That’s also the one that still bothers me but this is also what makes this composition so unique and complicated. Then the blackcurrant bursts out, powerful like a mix of cassis leaves and the berries but without one ounce of sugar - this is not jam. Its the depth and structure of all this that you miss on paper where it comes more flat and hence harsh than on skkn where it’s 3-D. There is also the plastic rubbery note that comes out at this stage along with tuberose (more dirty and less green as in Figment W) but nothing to put you off. Then what I like the most is in the dry down. All this otherwise dry concoction becomes more juicy and wam with a real beauty of rose and sandalwood base (and a bit of incense oil. I don’t sense the patchouli as such). It really tells a story in 3 acts. Beautiful realisation, very Christopher Chong when you get to read a bit about him, out of the beaten path and very artistical. I don’t know about NY in the 70’s maybe it is maybe not, it does not evoke me anything close to the atmosphere in that city but clearly something artistic and abstract instead. Would I wear it, well, I’m still thinking about it.

Great perfume. Not for young kids for sure. Black currant at the start is amazing.

Someone told me that Imitation Woman was louder than the men's and I had assumed that they're both similar to one another so I sold Imitation man to buy the women's version... I didn't realise before acting out while knowing full well that the men's and women's versions are always different to one another!

The opening of the fragrance is one of the best I have ever encountered! It fills your senses with plants, berries, something earthy and menthol fresh. I couldn't help associate it to a mix of Bracken Woman and Beach Hut Man. After an hour or so this settles to a very comforting rose, ylang and sandalwood combo.... I was reminded of Lyric Woman and immediately I felt I had a taste of heaven. The base is about blackcurrant and that reminded me of Gucci Absolute Pour Femme which in itself is an amazing fragrance.

It was interesting to smell something different yet be able to draw associations from some very good fragrances mainly from the same house. What is most attractive about this fragrance is that I get three clear distinct stages. That is like a little miracle to me as I don't really get to experience that in many perfumes so it is like a magical aspect for me and makes me wonder how this is made possible to happen?

Imitation Woman is an amazing fragrance and I would really like this one to be worn by the ladies and for me to smell it on them hahaha. Both Imitations can be shared by both genders but I do prefer the men's version on myself. On the whole both releases to me are two of the BEST releases of 2018. I have this deep connection with Amouage and when they do good, I feel some kind of personal pride. I don't know why I love Amouage so much...!?!

LateBloomer

On me this smells like metallic urine. I tried to wait for the drydown but I couldn't get it off fast enough. Does not mix well with my skin chemistry at all.
Definitely try it before you buy it.

SoftWisdom

I absolutely adore Imitation Woman! It's a great mature night-time scent. I very much agree with NZFH's review: I completely pick up the girls just wanna have fun & dangerous woman vibes. I can also see why this isn't a crowd-pleaser. I do like the NY 70s story behind it.

It's a little sweet, a little sour, it's smoky, it's loud, sassy, brash, sexy, juicy, and unapologetic. And it smells just like my hookah. Imitation Woman brings to my mind a late-night hookah joint with belly dancing. And since I'm a pro belly dancer myself, it fits me perfectly so I got myself a bottle LOL.

I haven't been so excited about an Amouage new release since Lilac Love came out. I do enjoy the other recent releases, but this one is special to me & stands out in a good way. Not everyone will agree, and that's okay!

Sezyvex

Wow... I am really enthralled by these two new Imitations!!! So juicy, so yummy, so different!!! This is just after first impressions, I don't have words yet to be able to 'review' my feelings and just want to enjoy this but want everyone to know that this is Amouage's return to making fragrances the way they should be made! My mind is blown after such a long time!

Fate Woman was the last Amouage that I loved. But while Fate was mostly an homage to vintage Bandit, Shalimar and Opium on my skin, Imitation Woman is completely new. I’ve been scratching my head to try and figure if it reminds me of anything, and it doesn’t. There’s a general vibe, a nod to genres and a way of saying ‘this is how they used to make em’, but Imitation is a beauty on its own, at least for me, although I’m sure this won’t be one of the popular ones. It’s too weird, too ‘in your face’. Maybe that’s why I absolutely love it!

The inspiration behind is 70’s New York, but for me is mostly late 70’s to early/mid 80’s.
Early 70’s were still pretty much green, chypre fragrances, and hazy dreamy florals. Think Halston, Scherrer, Chloé, Anaïs Anaïs, Private Collection; fragrances were tough just like the women and the conditions in New York, but there was space and time for a more dreamy world, seen through a haze of erotic florals.
Imitation lands somewhere between 1977 and 42nd street; seedy, gritty, colorful and bright just like a neon sign on Times Square.
The opening aldehydes (not as big as I wished for, but there for most of the duration) give room to the blackcurrant, the juiciest, highest pitched, most authentic blackcurrant that I have smelled. It’s uber sweet and gives fruitiness a whole new meaning. It’s fruity in the same way vintage Poison or Black Orchid are fruity; not the same by a long shot, but the same carnality and sensuality, hidden behind a playful façade. The licorice, which usually is my nemesis comes soon after, but it is done in such a beautiful and mature way, I keep wanting more of it. There’s a ‘secret elixir’ feel to it, just like a shot from an unnamed bottle served to you at Studio 54 while you’re chatting with Grace (Jones of course)! She would have rocked it back then.
The heart brings a honeyed orange blossom and skanky jasmine together, creating a more extravagant 80’s floral heart, with patchouli (earthy and heady), incense (dry and smoky), and sandalwood instead of long gone animalic notes. The beauty and the beast. ‘Pretty’ florals along ‘dirty’ base notes with rough edges to remind us that Bright Lights Big City is also dangerous.

Imitation feels like a girl that lives somewhere uptown. There’s a different feel than living downtown, and a bigger sense of security. But she loves to party, and she knows that the real living is somewhere along midtown, Coney Island or the Bronx. She doesn’t mind getting dirty, but she always has perfectly manicured red almond nails and a healthy supply of hairspray. And when she leaves the comfort of her suburban enclosure, she lights up a cigarette, gets of at Times Square, and follows the flow. It might not be Studio 54 every Saturday, but she always finds the right place. Imitation smells bright, ‘happy’. There’s a certain innocence underneath, a sensation that youth is eternal and the world is one big bite, that Saturday nights last forever and the sun will always shine brighter this side of the Brooklyn bridge.

Slightly ambiguous, Imitation manages to blend the beauty with the grittiness. It is both clean and dirty, and it’s New York before the Giuliani cleanup that eliminated, along with murder and crime, the rogue diversity that made Manhattan.

There’s a scene in The Deuce’s second season opening (HBO, highly recommended) where we see Candy walking along pimps, prostitutes, drug dealers and hustlers. She’s wearing a fur coat and a white silk ensemble that looks like Halston. While she smiles to some familiar faces on her way to a new disco, there’s a melancholy reminding her that some years before she was on those streets asking 30 plus 10 for her services, and a strength that shows her that she’s past those years, somewhere better, but not quite there yet; there are still obstacles in her way.
It’s Christmas 1977, the snow is falling, and Candy smells of Imitation. She might not have the uptown living just yet, but she embodies the scent perfectly!
My favorite release of 2018.

There is a metallic element to this perfume. At first I thought it was a fluke, but each time I wear this I smell it. The grape is also quite prominent. I love Amouage perfumes but this one is a miss...

Fluffyandpuffy

That is a kool aidish fruity smell to start.darn auto corrector!

Fluffyandpuffy

Well I’m just loving this little big fun fragrance, starts off with a fruity look aidish smell, little insense, but not too smoky but sweet and a little tangy?oh the florals! The ylang! Pleasant woods. Kind of a orchid ish black vibe but sweeter , very unusual but I’m really digging it. Hard to explain, no big licorice to my nose , must be blended very well, it’s very likable. Gotta try it yourself.

GIRLS JUST WANNA HAVE FUN?

Referencing an 80s pop song to describe a 70s-inspired perfume, but if you try it, I think you will see what I mean.

Seems like a lot of the reviews so far are more "gut reactions" to particular notes rather than holistic assessments. Luckily for me I don't find any of the individual notes off-putting. I confess I'm sorta digging the big glamour vibe of Imitation Woman.

Comes out of the bottle screaming Crazy! Wild! Let's Party! Nothing subtle going on here.

Very few feminine perfumes convey "dangerous woman" in the way this one does. Not so much mysterious, noir femme fatale; but more "I'm loud, reckless and irresponsible" and "I may lead you astray but it's gonna be fun while we do it."

The opening phase smells like muscat grape energy-drink soda and booze spilled across a nightclub dance-floor shrouded in hazy clouds of luminous green dry ice, hairspray and cigarette smoke. Then it calms down over time and becomes more restrained (but never entirely respectable).

Would be absolutely laughable to wear in formal or professional environments. Would certainly get people thinking "where is she at?" So not very versatile then. Almost exclusively a "going out" or nightclubbing perfume.

But nothing wrong with having one of those in one's wardrobe, surely?

Wolfchild

Just got a sample in the mail today. I love black currant and licorice. So far I thinks it's an interesting fragrance.

I'm not sure I would spring for a full bottle. I think I need to wear it for a couple of days before I decide.

Actually, a while back I got a sample of Penhaligon's The Ruthless Countess Dorothea, and this is very similar to my nose. I think it's the incense note. To me it smells more smoky than a true incense.

Ok, I love it! It is full bottle worthy all the way... To me this is black currant, juicy, ripe, venemous, with a good dose of incense. The words that come to mind are electric kool-aid, and snake venom. There ia a touch of the forbidden about it. I hope it never gets discontinued!

fuggerone

imitation really..something floral and sweet like a Chanel from the '70, truly feminine with beastly performance, on the right lady it can sparkle possibilities!

MissAnnette

The combination of blackcurrant and licorice is nauseating. This is the only Amouage I can’t stand.

Pez_Enelrio

Finally! There is a home fragrance in Zara home with cedar which I like so sometimes i even spray it to my clothes and this is very similar to that one:)

lauren.hallett

We got a sample in the office, to me it smelled as if someone had eating a truckload of licorice and then been sick. Note: I hate licorice, so if you actually like the putrid stuff you could adore this fragrance.

Amv10

I had a chance to try it this week in Harrods, the other distributors don’t have it yet. Mixed feelings, I don’t really like this one no matter how hard I tried (because I like a lot of their other fragrances). Smells very dry, somehow dusty over the green chypre signature and somehow acrylic. Rather strange. Reminds me of the smell when you enter a flower shop which usually to me they never smell of the blooms of flowers as such but rather of the greens and the stems and leaves of flowers. That, plus some dust, acrylic and paper. It’s this last part that bothered me more. Interesting for its genre, it’s just that I did not really like it, I think I like maybe a bit more brightness in a chypre.

Gabler

I tested it yesterday & I would describe my initial impression of Imitation like a sweetly spicy scent of smouldering incense, sweet and delicate licorice & rose essential oil. Imitation is softly floral, gently spicy, oriental & enchanting.

shumi25
