Mad Madame is an unusual perfume. It tells the story of a graceful young woman with a lifetime of experience in seduction, control and destruction. This Madame is really wearing a fur coat, drinking champagne with rose petals and laughing out loud. But there is another side to this Madame - the strong side, the side that knows her values, the side that has a strong backbone - the side that can love, give love and save souls. This sense of duality created by the composition of the perfume is very charming. This is no innocent rose. This rose knows what suffering, passion, sweat, childbirth, nurturing and womanhood are all about. At the same time, this rose is not about maturity, but about thriving in beauty, in splendour. For me, it is the perfume of a queen. 10 of 10

This literally smells like blood and roses. I’m not the biggest fan of florals, but there’s this faint metallic scent to it that kind of mutes the rose a little. It smells like a socialite vampire.

bren400

I really enjoyed the opening notes on this one. I'd say after about 15-20 minutes of wearing, fresh and rose-like Chloé notes came through. It was good until the top notes ended. 😕 This was actually better to me and more wearable than Chloé. The dry-down is woody. I wouldn't purchase it. I own Chloé and hardly wear it—though I do like it. Go figure. 🤷🏻♀️

EDIT 2/2024: I liked it more after testing again. I can say that I am enjoying my sample, and I know this because I get lovely rose-woody wafts👃🏼from the long lived base notes. May be too sour for some. It IS a sophisticated scent though.

This was a blind purchase. Mad Madame was heavily discounted, and I always wanted to own a Juliette Has A Gun perfume, so I thought, why not. I wouldn't say I liked it the first time I wore it; it reminded me of toilet cleaner. The scent was thick, velvety, and dirty while at the same time trying to hide under a cheap, heavy rose. Kind of like an old air freshener that isn't quite hiding (a not completely disgusting) poop odor. But I persevered; the next time I wore it, I sprayed it on my clothes and liked it a lot more -- I noticed the mysterious masculine elements, and the animalic was balanced with the florals. Since then, I have been wearing it daily and seem to have "adjusted" to it. It no longer smells like toilet cleaner. I would describe it as a dark, heavy, stuffy rose cut with a warm, masculine spice -- seems pretty unisex to me. Not sure I would pay full price for Mad Madame, but I am glad it is in my collection.

UPDATE: After a month of wearing this fragrance, I have decided I LOVE it. Would definitely pay full price for another bottle. I have a great experience everytime I wear it. For example, I wore it to a concert, I sprayed more than usual (I am usually a 3 spray person -- this time I did 3 on my clothes and 3 on my body). The complexity really came out -- the sweet, the musk, the powder.

I would say, that you are not going to like this fragrance at first smell, but the longer you wear it, the more you will enjoy it. Don't be afraid to buy it -- especially if you are a black clothes-wearing, lover of unique fragrances.

I had huge hope for my next Rose. After Romantina (without testing) in the same way I bought Mad Madame. I regret it… It smells on me cheap. I have never in my life got noxious (even after using even Ultraviolet which is heavy for most of the people) but after spraying in 5 minutes I got sick of this fragrance. Smells like toilet spray in my opinion. :/

ultimate.bliss

Instantly after spraying it, I knew this was love at first sniff. I imagined young, gorgeous man who doesn't care about opinion of others, who is just himself, smelling like this. It opens with bloody red rose tone, then it smells like well-kept dog's fur warm from sun, and flowers. After few hours, it settles into this musky-vanilla combo. Perfectly unisex, very unusual. I've recieved many compliments while wearing this, but it's not scent for everyone, I recommend buying sample first.

After spending nearly half a decade sitting on my Wanted list, I was taken to a shop this week that carried Mad Madame and allowed me to sample it (among countless other scents that eventually cluttered up the counter!). A mild but musky asphalt and gasoline opening, which I'm admittedly crazy about, and then nothing. Anosmia. I was devastated. I kept trying to sniff my wrist in between samples of other scents through the store, and Mad Madame was absent, a blank space where a fragrance was supposed to be.

Writing it off, I sampled other scents, and nearly convinced myself to purchase another, when reaching up to adjust my glasses wafted up a symphony of fresh-licked cat fur, damp laundry too thick to dry completely in the machine, headshop herbal combinations, and a pile of leaves. It stank. It was sweet. It was sick. I waved my hand up again and caught another whiff, body odor and sex-stained sheets wiped off with a Wet Ones, but upon trying to sniff the wrist, absolutely nothing. Another wave, and hairspray and rain-soaked flowers. Wet, camphorous, and nasty. Absolutely obsessed. Immediate purchase.

It's really hard to discern on myself at times. Can smell it better on clothing, but even then, it barely picks up to my nose if I'm actively searching for it. Sniffing too close, trying too hard to find it, paying too much attention to it makes it completely disappear; olfactory fatigue may be to blame, but I was worried that it would never register to me. But smelling it now, it comes and goes, heavy, musty musk and bitter flowers, raunchy yet refined and sometimes a little gross. Divine.

DS9Dax

Love a bossy rose scent. It’s not sweet little girl. This is one of the better ones from this house. Up there with Vanilla vibes and lily fantasy. If you like rose check this one out. It’s killer!!!

I don't like Agent Provocateur and things like that (I haven't had time to fall in love with it, although I don't lose hope), but I'm thinking of buying a bottle of Mad Madame.
I love this brand and maybe that's why Madame seems to me more tolerant than Agent. I think the title is perfect. You have to be crazy to allow yourself to smell like this. More precisely, you must be a very self-confident madman who does not care about the opinions of others. This bitch wears her natural fur coat, she does not care about modern society norms. She lifts the cigar to her red lips and sends the boys to hell, who didn't realize that she only accepts huge burgundy roses as gifts. She also loves sex.
And men are ready to endure her madness in order to spend at least a night with this bitch. And they are even ready to endure her disgusting perfume, which they will remember for a long time.

Perpetual Collector

My absolute favorite perfume on this planet is Agent Provocateur, and it is my most complimented as well. I can not possibly imagine more perfect rose perfume than AP, even though i have been searching for something to outshine it. So far no luck, AP is the absolute winner when it comes to dirty, sexy roses, bottled. Last night i was researching stuff on Fragrantica and noticed the comparison of JHAG Lady V and Mad Madame to AP. Realizing i actually have both of these perfumes, i decided to test them and see if any of them can beat my beloved AP.
Starting with Mad Madame, well, the answer is not only that it can not beat the Agent P, but they are also nothing alike. Not sure why people are voting for their similarity, these two have zero likeness. I've had MM for a few years but today is the first time i am wearing it. The conclusion is that i hate it. Aside from Chloe Love, this is only my second time encountering the dreaded "bug spray" type of rose, and as my luck would have it, it is unscrubbable even after a hot shower. In fact, it turned even worse after the shower, and it is churning my stomach right now. I am left with pure Raid on my right arm, and i think only Delina managed to repulse me more.
Mad Madame is in no way, type or form similar to pink Agent Provocateur.

CarlottaMarie

On my skin, this smells like cheap perfume mixed with windex. Absolutely hate this. I find that Agent Provocateur feels much more well rounded if you’re looking for a dirty, musky rose.

Mad Madame by Juliette Has A Gun designed by Romano Ricci nephew of the designer Nina Ricci. It is a 2012 fragrance that contains an unexpected vintage charm, the charm of the great classics with redundant and varied olfactory pyramids. Opening notes to the juste pulvérisé and subsequently to the dry the explosive rose triumphs over amber and fruity accords, central notes the white flowers and the tuberose make the bland floral and hyper feminine, in the base notes and the dry down this floral symphony flares up with animalic, chypre, sweet and woody notes that make it enveloping, sensual and damn vintage. My sense of smell associates this fragrance with a great vintage classic: Diva by Ungaro, with the only difference that this fragrance lacks the classic old-fashioned notes of aldehydes and civet. Pleasant unobtrusive sillage. Evanescent duration.

frog_princess

I had SUCH high hopes for this! But they literally smell like tiger balm on me....

Miasha

Hahahaha - I just have to laugh!! This is absolutely wonderful - in a totally unexpected way! It is like spending the whole day at the tivoli... complete with a tour in the horsecarriage with your family, or your humourous, fun and loving man: through the lovely park surroundings, just before sunset, when you are finally all exhausted.. and then you spend the next day at the Zoo, and round off the day with going to the opera!! With lots of visits to different cafe's, ice cream stands and restaurants, in between it all.
Not the usual rose perfume, but oh so fun!!

P.S: It is not strong, though, so I highly recommend overspraying. Or at least reapplying... ☺
But I find that it lasts longer on clothes. And on hair - if I'm ok with having the same fragrance the next day.
Actually unoffensive, as opposed to what some say - totally work-approprate in my opinion. Not really a skanky perfume at all I think, and not a sexy perfume. Just sensuous in a very oldfashioned, bohemic and romantic way. And like I said before: fun. Don't let the notes scare you off!
But of course: try to test this first, since it will not be to everybody's liking. It is a very special and personal fragrance. And it so happens, that it fits MY personality perfect, so that is why I can say that I could wear this almost every day if I like to. But it is not for everybody.

Sammy@au

Mad madame.
A funky, pungent, dusty rose.
Weirdly wearable.
Now for the fur coat.

EmpressVision

Ayyyyy...this one snuck up on me and made me fall in love. I blind bought this over a year ago and I was soooooo disappointed. The castoreum/musk presented itself as the worst armpit sweat funk ever. It completely over-rode the rose and any other notes. I sadly placed it to the side and promptly forgot about it. Fast forward to a couple of weeks ago. Some spirit moved me to try it on again, despite my initial impression. Something wonderful happened. The rose and animalics began to dance sensuously together with the other notes making beautiful music for them to dance to. It's slightly skanky in the best way now. I'm thrilled I didn't give up on this. It matches my introverted but outspoken personality. It's not for the faint of heart and won't work with the chemistry of many. I got lucky with this blind buy. I wouldn't recommend this as as blind buy unless you're in love with hard core animalics.

Edit 8/5/22--this joint switched up on me! 😃 Put some one tonight & it's a superlative symphony of florals with black currant & patchouli. The patchouli is green & earthy. Barely any animalic anything and this is still a thing a beauty. Fascinating!

DaniBear1121

Ooh Mad Madame. I love this. And that is a big accomplishment from a fragrance with patchouli as prominent as this one. I, like the reviewer below me, do not generally enjoy patchouli in fragrances. It often takes over and ruins them for me. It actually doesn't do that in Mad Madame, though it's there. The balance of this fragrance is masterful and I just keep coming back to sniff again and again.

Mad Madame is a great name for this scent, and part of the reason I was drawn to it. The bottle reminds me of the Queen of Hearts and the book Heartless (just read it!), which might seem weird but I needed it just for the bottle.

So, this lady is...ultra feminine, rose and currant forward, patchouli isn't dusty smelling, it's earthy, which is I think why it works better here for me. Jasmine and freesia are supporting notes and I love them both. She lasts and lasts, revealing depth and mystery that keeps you coming back for more. Try a sample or travel size first.

wondervalley666

Oh nooooo! This is not the scent for me. First spray, a patchouli bomb that nearly choked me out. I usually avoid all patchouli-containing scents because that is the one note that ruins everything else for me. But I let it dry down to see if it would develop into something nice... and NOPE. The patchouli is fading, but I'm getting a STRONG animal poop/urine/zoo/musky scent. It smells like I cleaned the cat litter box after neglecting it for a month, got the scent all over my skin, then tried to spray "that cheap old bottle that spoiled on moms vanity a decade ago" on myself to cover it up. I usually like musks, but this is VERY animalic. Really reminds me of a gas station bathroom or portapotty. I can sense the florals trying to cover up the musk, and sometimes they seem to do the job, but I can still sense the soiled animal cage underneath. I heard of "scat notes" being added to perfume to make it richer, but never smelled a poop-y perfume before, this is pretty amusing and what I imagine they would be like. It really does have a dirty butthole in a bathroom with an unwashed urinal kind of scent hanging out under the flowers. Glad I only ordered a mini, but honestly I want this out of my house immediately and regret even buying that.

I understand JHAG scents are notorious for smelling different on different people, though I only ever smelled NICE scents coming from these fragrances before. Plus I LOVE Sunny Side Up, even though it seems to be one of the most difficult scents I've ever owned in terms of performance and seems to smell bad on a lot of reviewers. This is a different kind of beast though. I can tell this is SUPPOSED to smell like a classic perfume/cologne smell. I don't think anything is wrong with my sample. And I like musks, I own a few! But THAT musk... oh boy. Not working with my body chemistry, I guess.

And now, after a couple hours, all I smell is old dried animal urine on my arm. Absolute scrubber. Even after washing with heavy soap, I still smell it. All over. I tried to cover it up, but it's not working! Oh god, make it go away. Mad Madame is a big NO for me.

realitygreene

First spray of Mad Madame and I was HOOKED. This is a sexy, dark rose, like if a Dominatrix wore a rose scent. It's so strong, but in a good way. At first the rose was vaguely soapy and I wasn't sure if I was going to like it, but it's been about 2 hours since I applied Mad Madame and it keeps getting better and better. The soapyness had toned down a lot and it's mostly just rose, amber, patchouli, and animalic musk. I am hooked on this intoxicating and sexy scent.

Edit: This lasted me easily 8+ hours. Absolutely adding it to my wish list!

yunoh

I have a love-hate relationship with Mad Madame! Some days I really like it, and some days I just don't. It's really complex, unusual, quite unique. I never smelled anything like it and that says a lot. It's really animalic. A great creation I would say. Keep in mind this is a rose dominant fragrance.

Mistress Eva

In my large perfume collection, I have nothing quite like this. It was a blind buy, but I was feeling risky and I guessed it would be a true love or a hate. Polarizing fragrances are sometimes my favorites. I wouldn't recommend dropping the money on this one as a blind buy for most people.

Mad Madame is not what I'd call a "beginner's fragrance" as it is very unusual and might be hard to appreciate for noses accustomed to more conventional perfumes. At first, it overwhelmed me with its animalic accord. It was bold. My husband, who loves fragrances, liked it immediately. It struck him as an aggressive, dirty rose that enjoys a good time. He could smell the animalic tones (castoreum + black currant), but they weren't off-putting to him.

My dog, who loves to smell my perfumes (I really am not joking--he is extremely interested in them), took such a shine to this one, that he followed me around the house, nose glued to my wrist. The glint in his eye, had me briefly worried for the dignity of my leg. Fortunately, he was content to just sniff and keep all four paws on the ground.

Sure enough, the drydown did the trick. The sharp, in-your-face animalic accord settled into a big-bosomed rose. The patchouli, jasmine, and tolu balsalm are probably the next most noticeable notes. The vanilla and freesia are completely undetectable. Overall, this is a badass bouquet--not appropriate for work, but totally awesome.

Katerian145

Wow. This madame is confident, a bit impudent and hot. She takes what she wants and I'm pretty sure she doesn't wear underwear. This perfume is almost obscene, as one of the previous reviewers said... And I love it. Put your harness on, baby!

evarosa

Very nice, deep and fresh rose that is familiar from oud and rose fragrances. Dries down a little chemical smelling. I don't get any animalics on my skin. This would be great for a man to wear as it's not sweet, but I do see that the presentation is not really tempting for that market!

Miasha

The most rescent reviews of this fragrance give me hope... is it possible that I can find the rose perfume of my dreams?? Maybe I will give myself this for Valentines Day this year... if I promise to live on all the groceries I already have in my cupboard! 😛🌹💟

osy2017

This is one mad, animalic rose, that can turn heads when passing by. Don't play innocent with this one, no one will believe you. Very long lasting and loud. Love the red and black bottle. Definitely I do not have anything like it, but I love it.

Daniela_Beatriz

Well, this was a good surprise. Does it have a lot of roses? Certainly. Does it reeks a bit like a poopie bum? Oh yeah. But does this makes it a bad scent? Not at all. For the lovers of rosy vintage civet animalic frags, this one is great. I for one find it chic and rebellious, a solid like for me.

Ajaycheshire

Finally! Hooray! I'm so happy to have discovered this scent.

I was intrigued by this brand and didn't know too much . I sprayed this over me in the shop and the following two days I couldn't stop getting pleasant wafts on my clothes.

Of course I had to buy it and I'm soooooo happy that I have another Chypre to fill my La Perla gap.

I'm really pleased. This will be my new go to signature scent. It's beautiful, warm, sophisticated, mysterious, not in your face, but secretly present.

I'm over the moon to find something I know I will wear for years. The bonus is the sexy bottle too!

Miruna

An animalic chypre, a strong rose with a harsh vintage indolic vibe.

Very sharp and yes, if I focus long enough I get the public toilet/ indolic vibe, too although it is well hidden in the far background.

I love the bottle, but I don't see why anyone would like to smell like this. It is not the worst I've smelled, I don't even hate it, but I find it too vintage and boring. We have such a variety of awesome out there.
I much prefer Lady Vengence as a great rose from the same house.

TunyaPe

I love animalic fragrances but this is a 5D zoo. One of the three fragrances that hurt my olfactory. Torture in a bottle.

Fati.km

Oh my God, it smells like you sprayed Stella perfume in a stinky public toilet .

LauraAD

A delicious, rich blackcurrant and rose blend, made sharp by the balsamic accord that harmonises seamlessly with that glorious castoreum scent that underpins everything. Warmed by musk and a subtle vanilla. Screams high class, bad ass woman. Sophisticated yet takes no shit. Bespoke tailoring, black credit card, sky high heels. This lady owns the boardroom, the bedroom, and the bar. I'm not quite her in reality, but when I wear this perfume I sure as hell am in my head.

Mariyamokshina

Play dough , and overripe sangria that sat too long when first sprayed . Then the sangria goes away and becomes spicy medicinal herb rose . Nice and complex , but just not for me

stalal

No, it doesn’t smell like piss, fecal, hospital like or animallic to me. This is a beautiful combination of rose and jasmine for my nose almost powdery and reminds me of some old school Talcum powder my gran might have used also her makeup drawer.. for my nose mad madame and lady vengeance are fairly similar, only vengeance could get cloying but madame stays one step back from it. It will remind you Middle East fyi!!

At the same time I could totally see the reference of a gothic madame wearing it but then I also said my gran so I probably relate this with a strong woman, or my gran had a secret sparkling night life!

I bought it for myself (i don’t really eff about perfume gender) for early spring and autumn .. probably on cooler summer nights as well if I am out at harbour or a boat.

Do check the profile of person and their perfume choices before taking their opinion seriously.

Edit:
And my partner smells piss when I spray 😞!! Hate to part ways

LouLouDK

Call me crazy, but on me, this perfume reminds me so much of Chanels Coco Noir! 🖤
I just got it today, as a blindbuy, because I can’t buy it in any stores in my area & so far i’m loving it. I just couldnt figure out what reminded me of, till I went through my perfume tablout 😁

On a site note; my dog has not reacted to it (yet!) 🐶

mothmama

Got a sample. First thing I smelled is beer for some reason. After a few seconds it transformed into a nice, musky rose with a little bit of that animalistic smell. Reminds me of rich sophisticated women wearing fur coats and drinking whisky. Packs quite a punch. I'll probably buy a full sized bottle in the future.

kadair14

From a perfume newbie: I get a lot of rose, which I don't like. It seems like a sharp, almost synthetic rose. At one point I thought I smelled a hint of a wet dog. Each time I've tried my sample of Mad Madam I have gone and sprayed MMM... over it. Not sure if these two make a great pair or if I just like MMM...

LinaSVas

I can't describe how Castorum smells to me - all I know is it the same "extra" smell that i get from dr pepper, vanilla flavoring, and strawberry syrup. (i was looking to understand "animalic" I guess I was just looking for something stinky)
This perfume is well blended I only really recognize the rose which is sweet yet badass !?!

SmellsLikeMoneyWellSpent

Probably the only black currant scent I have no problem with. I don’t smell the zoo at all, I only feel dry and distant scent of chypre wind and... gun powder. Yeah, it gives me the strange vibe of gunpowdery haughtiness. I like it.

moderndandy_swap

Strongly reminds me Amouage Imitation Man, but without orris/iris, and this one has very harsh synthetic rubbery note, VERY similar to a crappy musk base of Oud for Greatness. I guess it is what everyone perceives as something animalic.

Tolkashutka

The opening is really beautiful, with noticeable appearances by a gorgeous rose, patchouli and oakmoss. The castoreum and currant come out to play about 10 minutes after initial spritz--I noticed the first time that I sampled it several weeks ago that this animalic stage was immensely strong and caught me off guard. I almost scrubbed it off, but I’m glad that I stuck it out, because the STRONG animalic stage doesn’t last forever, and then fades away and transforms back into something quite lovely.

On my second wearing, I was prepared for the beaver butt juice stank, and it didn’t seem quite as alarming--probably because I was expecting it and anticipating its arrival. Once the castoreum subsides, a less polarizing but hypnotic musk comes out and settles things down. Projection might be moderate, but longevity is eternal--still very much detectable on my skin at the 12 hour mark.

I strongly disagree with the comparison to Toy Boy--Mad Madame is nothing like Toy Boy, at least on my skin. I purchased a pre-loved bottle of Toy Boy, and I’m glad that I got the deal that I did on it--I would have been upset to pay full price. However, I would gladly pay full retail for a bottle of Mad Madame (although I do love a deal when I can get one). The only downside so far is that while getting ready for work, I noticed that my dog seemed quite alarmed by my fragrance choice.

I haven’t sampled too many JHAG fragrances yet, but this is the first one that I can see myself investing in a full bottle sometime in the future--even if it does appear to frighten my dog.

When I was eleven, my parents took me to Chicago to check out the Lab School. After sunset, we browsed the science fiction section of the original Powell’s City of Books, and later that night, we had a visit with their old friend from law school, a fancy corporate lawyer. She swept into the bar in a real fur coat, which to little girl me felt sensuous, animal, unsettlingly intimate with death. She wore her hair in a blunt gray pixie cut, wore not a speck of makeup on her face. She smoked cigarettes, drank peaty Scotch. Her voice was dark and caramel, her laugh bold and puncturing, her humor frequent and off-color. We bonded over one-hit wonder Evie Sands. She told me to read Katherine Anne Porter. I was certain that I had met The Most Interesting Woman In The World.

We never went back to Chicago. I never saw her again.

But that bitch reeked of rose and castoreum. And when I smell Mad Madame, it kind of brings her back.

I’d wear this scent every day if I could, but it repulses my husband and frightens our cat.

RottigrlNYC

If only they’d left the castorium out. I can’t do animalic. Too bad, could have been a FB for me, but as it is, it’s a NO.

elledeelee

This is the first time I've ever had to write a second review for a fragrance because my opinion of it has changed so much, and I'm very happy about that. I admit, I judged this one too quickly.
I experience this perfume very differently now from when I first tested it. Previously I was underwhelmed, now I'm obsessed.
To me it's become warm, dirty, primal, deeply animalic, a little bit skanky and I'm absolutely dying over it. Finally found the sex bomb I was looking for! Added to the top of my wish list, I suddenly have an immediate, all-consuming and desperate need for it.

Avian

Yes, it smells like a zoo. Blooming manicured gardens, freshly trimmed topiary, sweet fruity animal feed for the tropical birds and primates, and yes, the animals themselves, in all their unapologetically warm, furry, au naturale glory.

Mad Madame opens with unassuming ruby-red rose, currant jelly, and bitter green oakmoss. I am not a huge fan of any of those, so I was not impressed. But once Mad Madame catches the heat of your skin, it lights up the otherwise-average notes and injects their scent with intense castoreum.

Overall, Mad Madame is a menagerie of rich rose, faint touches of tuberose, delectable oakmoss (and I do usually hate oakmoss) woody patchouli, bright currant, and gorgeous castoreum. Sometimes, I even catch something that smells sharp and bright, like oud. The end result is both a little crazy, a little vintage-flair, and extremely elegant. Weird and wild, but also wonderful and wearable. Interestingly, is enhanced by summer weather when your skin is hot and a little sweaty. This seems to be a running theme with JHAG scents.

I did NOT enjoy Mad Madame the first few times I tried it. Like coffee or liquor, it is an acquired taste. It really grew on me each time I tested it. An amazing, thoughtful, and generous Fragrantican gifted me a bottle, so I can now indulge whenever I wish!

Perrywinkle

Mad Madame to me is the ultimate sex bomb.

A motorbike tears up on the curb and screams to a stop on a cold, wet city night. A black shiny leather knee high boot swings off the back of the bike, her bike. This woman is on the prowl. Not on the prowl for a man - but to cause some fun style trouble.

Sauntering along the pavement, helmet in hand, she is sleek, sexy and strong. Ultra Femme Fatale, blood red lipstick, smouldering eyes... looking for prey.
She passes by and her scent is primal - sexy, feminine... intoxicating.

A rose heavy animalic powerhouse. A little love or hate (so try before you buy). Actually does remind me of Narciso For Her on steroids.
If you love it you will be very happy because the longevity and sillage are amazing, and price is on point for the quality - 100ml will last for a loooong time.

It's a love for me!

Gnossiennes

Fruity rose. At first I did not notice the animalic. Rose, just like the woody note in Sunny Side Up, is somehow core here: without the mediation of rose, the acceptable environment just collapses immediately. Not till then can I discover the not very balanced castoreum. But I guess this work is already above average among JhaG.

I love Mad Madame, and I'm a guy.
Now I have Toy Boy, they are similar!

NoelleLovesScents

This for me was a love/hate story. I smelled it and I was in love, for a few days I kept raving about it and a week later I ordered it. Next thing you know, it was New Year's Eve and people around me in the car were having headaches, because I sparyed heavy, me included.
This one is for a mad lady indeed, you won't go unnoticed.
This is strong, it stays with you for a long time. It's animalic, its dirty, it's in your face.

It's Miss Charming after she lives a little. I really enjoy this. It's sexy, dark, mature, the fruitiness is sweet without being shy, innocent or cloying. For me, I don't get any strong animal scent, at least nothing off putting. What is animalistic is musky and divine. yeah it's a bit dirty, but I've enjoyed dirtier. I agree with GenevaX, "This is ideal for those who gravitate towards the unusual but shy away from the blatantly strange: it's a scent that is odd, but not scarily so." It's nearly generic, but the musky flavors keep it interesting. Wonderful projection, I should also mention. The first hour of the fragrance is a 9/10 from me. It's strong, impulsive, and unafraid. The remaining time it spends on my skin is more "generic", less complex and interesting, while being beautiful, slightly sweet and quite musky. Overall I think it's a 7.5/10 for me. I want to revisit it in colder weather to see how it shapes itself.

TallulahBea

"Mad Madame" is a newish addition to my fragrance wardrobe, but I am already falling for it!

I am really surprised to read that some people find it quite repellent. I don't get anything nasty, or even animalistic from it. To me it's a strong rich hit of red roses to start with, which dries down to something very oudish to me, which I know is not a listed ingredient, but whatever it is, I can't get enough of it.

Longevity and sillage are pretty good, and to me Mad Madame evokes a confident, sophisticated, sexy, slightly alternative, grown-up woman, with a bit of a dark side.

elledeelee

From the notes and reviews I was expecting dirty, skanky sex, but when I spray it on me all I get is a clean, masculine, old smelling, very musky citrus. I only get the rose when I press my wrist right up against my nose. Not a bad fragrance per se, but my expectations were set up for something very different. It's absolutely nothing like I was expecting, and nothing like I wanted, although the more I test it the more I am beginning to appreciate this kind of musk. I suppose after a few hours there is a hint of something that some people might describe as sexy, but I was hoping for something on the level of VW Boudoir, which this cannot even compare to. If it were a colour it would be very pale yellow, which is maybe where the pee connotation comes in. It's pretty long lasting though which is a plus!

Kittykatkin

Thank heavens for eBay decants...at first spray I was pleasantly surprised and looked forward to it developing on my skin. Oh my goodness I wish it hadn’t! Eau de underpass is the most polite way to describe it. If this smells good on others then congratulations, but it smelled horrendous on me. I couldn’t wait to scrub it off! Quite possibly the worst fragrance I’ve tried. I shall be avoiding castoreum at all costs in the future!

Edit: I really wouldn’t advise spraying it anywhere near fabric unless you like it - this stuff is nuclear! I scrubbed and scrubbed my skin and it wouldn't come off so I can only imagine how it would cling to material.

When I first sprayed it, i was disappointed. It smelled just like the kind of fragrance boring women wear every day. I almost wanted to go wash it off, but than the animal came out. Like litteraly... This scent is incredibly animalic,wild,sexy...

The first thing that came to mind was a blood red lipstick and a fur collar. Than i rememberd a song Ghost Town - Youre So Creepy. Tha i imagined Cruella from 101 dalmatins. I think this is what Disney's villains smell like. ¨

It's a scent for a mad madame for sure

GenevaX

To my nose, the Juliette Has a Gun house tends to be more marketing bark than bite, producing pretty and wearable but not particularly edgy fragrances. But Mad Madame comes as close as JHAG gets to living up to the modern-weirdo-romantic aesthetic the brand's name tries to evoke. It is a bit barmy, and all the better for it, like a New Wave Cruella DeVille. MM is an eccentric chypre that opens with a blast of metallic rose, calming to a pleasant floral-animalic with a touch of fruit. Its composition is a bit vintage, but not overly so. As an animalic, it's something of a faux fur coat, giving off the desired feral aesthetic without the disturbing bits. This is ideal for those who gravitate towards the unusual but shy away from the blatantly strange; it's a scent that is odd, but not scarily so.

kiraagold

Big green leaves at first spray, then waxy flowers and roses in a huge stainless steel vase.

Eventually settles into a watery flood of black currant tea and wet dog--a fancy one with manicured paws and a pompadour.

Both swanky and skanky. Not for me, but it's got a certain likeable strut.

highonfumes

I don’t have the same longevity experience as some others do. I put this on an hour ago, and it seems like it’s already a skin scent. I get a lot of cassis from this, and i’ve recently discovered that I dislike cassis because I think it smells a lot like potpourri. Aside from the cassis, I get rose and a dash of patchouli at the top with some supporting florals. I like my animalics stronger, and I don’t even smell the castoreum.

Final word: roses and berries, ladylike florals, polite patchouli. This mad madame isn’t nearly mad enough for me.

theresalovesherlashes

Still one of the strongest perfumes I’ve ever owned! I have skin that eats fragrances quickly and this one lasted several hours on me. It was a very raw scent, but I’m an elementary school teacher so I didn’t wear it except on date night or special occasions. It’s definitely not me, and I’m glad I didn’t buy a big bottle.

kerrylkatriviera

The red bottle is perfect for it, for the impression I get is one of redness. Subtle rose with a strong woody bottom and a delightful note of blackcurrant. Some people think this is too sexy, but I think it's a slightly dark feminine fragrance that you CAN wear during the day. The elements are so nicely balanced and blended. Very nice choice of moss to add an element of mystery and earthiness.

LizzyBathory

As a lover of rose, patchouli and animalic notes, MM is one of my very favourite fragrances. It's rich, juicy and skanky with its prominent castoreum, and tuberose is amplified on my skin during summer evenings. Yes, I know, scents like this aren't something most would wear in hot weather but I discovered it just before a trip to the Philippines so it has sentimental value for me - the patchouli note in particular brings me a sweet nostalgia.

Mad Madame is potent. Very potent. Sillage is about five feet and when I wear it, everyone notices - as the creators intended. As one would imagine, it is polarising. Some love it, finding it kooky and vintage, with some describing it as sexy, even. Others have commented that I smell like a whore...which for me is part of its appeal! This of course, means it's not a safe blind buy, and something of an acquired taste.

For me, this is a truly beautiful, vintage inspired floral-chypre with a modern twist. It's not like anything else I've smelled in recent years and I find the 60s-esque vibe very sophisticated. It has the JHAG DNA that all fans of the brand have come to know and if you're a fan of animalics and take your white florals pungent, this is a juice that's sure to please. It's a love-or-hate scent but if you fall into the "love" camp, this stuff is addictive and I'm a self confessed junkie.

I was also pleased to read recently that JHAG is not tested on animals and is cruelty free, which is always good to know when you're dealing with animal notes. I now love it even more.

Flemeth

Having liked most Juliette Has a Gun fragrances and being a rose lover, I ordered a sample thinking I would love this. I almost blind bought a bottle.

I excitedly sprayed this on my wrist waiting for the skanky rose. To my disappointment, all I could smell was castoreum. I thought I liked animalics. I was hoping the beaver butt would give way to the rose I smelled when I sniffed the bottle, but I couldn't. After about 20 minutes I had to wash it off. Well, actually scrub. Beaver Butts are clingy creatures. I'm surprised I reacted this strongly to Mad Madame - many reviews described it as a rather tame rose scent. I wouldn't recommend anyone to blind buy this one.

Shinder13

I just wanted this for the gorgeous bottle, but held back my impulse to do a blind buy. So I got hold of a sample hoping I'd love this fragrance. I don't. Gives me a migraine. Bye bye pretty bottle.

SailorV

With the castoreum note voted so highly on here and the tacky promo pictures with the furs, I was kind of afraid to try Mad Madame. I found JHAG Calamity J so animalic and skanky that I threw away my sample instead of writing a review, a thing I don‘t usually do, so I thought Mad Madame would likely be too much for me, too.

Well, it isn‘t... Yes, there is something animalic in it, but only lightly so, on my skin it‘s more like regular old musk than anything too weird, it‘s actually more clean than dirty to my nose.
To me, this smells kind of old school, like an old fashioned spicy soap. I get musk, deep red roses, a little patchouli, a very strong moss note and something sharp, maybe from the cassis or freesia. A bit screechy green floral in the top notes and soapy when it dries down. There is not a hint of sweetness in this.
This is not my style at all, but I don‘t hate it either. It‘s unusual for a 2012 release, I would recommend it to those who are more into older fragrance styles.

Summer.ladon.smith

Mad Madam is a spicy animalistic rose. Best suited to those in their 20's-30's with fierce personalities. The base being rose, it's surrounded by a mist of musk and castoreum, why the back note of patchouli is quite sharp in this mixture. Best kept for nights out, possibly casualwear.

meg0825

Wow! Mad Madame really packs a punch. A super skanky, dirty, leathery rose. The animal notes are intense and so sensual. The fragrance is rounded out by patchouli and a little sweet tolu balsam. This is my first JHAG fragrance and I love it! Amazing!

AMajeedQT

What a sexually-arousing, deep, feminine scent!

A mysterious musky animalic rose scent with a serious edge of patchouli & tolu balsam.

So mature, so attractive!

I fell for it from the first sniff!

A warning nonetheless. It may be too much for some to the point where they don't like.

Honestly, as a man, if a woman passes me smelling like this, she'll pull my head toward her by the nose.

Well done, Juliette, well done. You've created a magnet.

jwinkler

The animal side of this fragrance is very prominent on my skin, and it contrasts sharply with the rose/berry scent. I also smell the patchouli. I do think it has a very interesting smell, but I don't think I actually like it. It reminds me of a sweaty, smelly teenage boy who happens to be wearing rose and patchouli oil. It's less like a Mad Madame and more like Ignatius O'Reilly.

spiderleenie

If you find Miss Charming to be too sweet or innocent and also find Lady Vengeance to be too sharp or sexy ... Then I think that Mad Madame is a good in-between. It's a strong, long lasting fragrance that can smell a bit too crazy if you use too much, but it can be a soft fragrance if you use it lightly.

The rose is the star of the show here (like Miss Charming and Lady Vengeance), but it's the other notes that transform the rose into something different. The castoreum immediately starts to take over a bit, making the rose smell sharp and almost leathery ... But then the white musk comes in to give the rose a soft clean quality to it; it lightens up the strong castoreum. These are the top three notes that stand out the most for me (and on my skin), personally.

A few hours into wearing this, I start to smell the berries and the amber faintly, which adds a subtle sweetness to the floral, animalic, and musky quality to the perfume. And I can't for the life of me smell the white florals, even the tuberose (which is surprising, because tuberose tends to easily stand out when it's used in a perfume). Perhaps the tuberose is there to add longevity to the perfume? Near the end of my wearing the fragrance, I pick up on the moss notes quite a bit, which gives everything a surprisingly earthy and green rosy finish.

This is a difficult fragrance to describe, really. I think it is overall a much stronger fragrance than Miss Charming or Lady Vengeance, but it's also suited as an "in-betweener" of the two, since I wouldn't classify it as a very sexy fragrance or an innocent and sweet fragrance. Dare I say that I think this is a more masculine fragrance than the other two because of the earthy and musky characteristics?

Overall, I like this one because it's interesting. I can't categorize it, exactly, which makes this a fun fragrance. I'd be lying if I said I preferred wearing this over Lady Vengeance or Miss Charming, though.

If I had to classify the fragrances:

-Miss Charming: Girly
-Lady Vengeance: Sexy
-Mad Madame: Diva

How could I forget this one in my survey of daring perfumes! This one just slashes the air around with an olfactory knife. Or it's a kind of olfactory whipcrack! If there is a fragrance equivalent of an emergency services siren, I think this has got to be it. Shrieking loud, super pungent, abrasive: possibly one of the most bellicose fragrances on the shelves!

I can't not say a few more words about this one. Please don't get the impression from the above that I in any way object to this fragrance. It is light & bright taken to an extreme ... and really taken to an extreme! And this is surprising seeing as it has castoreum and tolu balsam in it, both of which I would say are components of the thick and heavy kind. But in this, the pitch of their vibration seems to be raised by about two octaves. That's quite a feat of parfumistry! Spritzed myself with this on the bus earlier, and then suddenly thought "maybe I shouldn't've done that here!" No-one objected though, thankfully. And that reminds me - haven't changed my "wearing". (It's bound to go out of date very often, though.)

HowConnie

It seems mad is a relitive term. Somewhere in a English country town where the most interesting news is the weather, perhaps a balsamic rose is risky. This scent appears more trendy and youthful like a discovery while staying in hostels around the would. This person appears educated and worldly.

Shwets

This is a pretty and tame version of Lady Vengeance.
No harshness on my skin. I can even smell Miss Charming in this.

Moderate longevity and sillage. Lovely and safe fragrance.

More Tame Madame rather than Mad Madame!!!

Vegas Pauli

The rose, peony, patchouli, musk and amber makes this almost a dead ringer for Narciso Rodriguez Fleur Musc For Her, except, of course, for that barn yard fecal smell. That castoreum (i.e animal gland) note in this is predominate and noticeable. It kind of makes an interesting contrast with the pinky flowery sweet vibe of this, but I'm not 100% convinced they are compatible. Poo and sweet flowers? I have to say I'm intrigued, amused and entertained by this one. Kudos to any woman who is daring enough to pull this off.

I'm using this fragrance right now, for almost 2 years. It was a gradual switch from Gucci Guilty, which I like the powdery scent it left but had to shake it off after almost 4 years.

It's interesting to read the reviews below and I'm surprised by some of the personal descriptions. My own take at first was that this perfume had strong oud in it. I was in Paris when I came across this brand and I was smelling it in the air every time some group of women of certain culture passed by. I was thinking, I've got to ask. They told me a name of a brand, but when I sprayed it on me, I was thinking this is not for me.

Long story short, an SA in La Fayette introduced me to this one, and I fell in love instantly. Mad Madame felt like a younger sister of the oud fragrance I searched for, only a bit more confusing, mad and wild.

At first I thought I smell metallic rust. One of my colleagues even mentioned that she thought she's smelled ginger (???!). But I really do love it, I'm not one to pin point descriptive notes, but this fragrance is really one of a kind, it's not for girly girl type and it's mostly a night perfume. I wear it during the day though. I did notice that some stranger had recoiled and face different direction upon my presence one day when I took public train to work. Lols. So yes, it is definitely not for everyone, it indeed chooses its wearer, I feel.

Intoner

After I spending my time reading all the reviews about Mad Madame, I have to admit, some of negative reviews had paused my blind-buy idea for this perfume. Especially the one that mention piss and dirty underwear.

But my desire for MM had won over the fear.
Then, the package had arrived. I unbox it and admire the exquisite blood red bottle while thinking that MM will unleash the piss horror or the bewitching rose... I hold my breath and spray it on my wrist...

guess what?

I F****** LOVE IT!

First off, I got whimsical rose. It is a little bit sugary which make it smells modern. (IMO) Then, the ripe blackcurrant comes out. It smells like an expensive wine. The patchouli is not dirty at all. It is very fresh, menthol even. Somehow tuberose and jasmine are distinctive to my nose. They add creaminess and mellow sweet to MM. Oak-moss puts in dry and green vibe. Finally, the main actress of this perfume... Castoreum.

It is dirty indeed but not powerful enough to turn a perfume into piss and dirty lingerie odor. (Though, be proud if your underwear smells like this perfume.) It just darken all moods that express earlier.
It's like the dark force that corrupts a charming princess, turns her into Darth Vader... wait, no... an evil lustful queen... or, perhaps, just a Mad Madame.

Amber and balsam come out on the dry down to add oriental vibe.
Of course, the limelight is still on the castoreum while rose peek out from the crimson curtain.

Overall, I enjoy this beautiful madness.

veryhydrating

Originally was surprised to find it nice and wearable despite the prominent beaver note; it wasn't as dirty as I expected. But after a few more wears I felt like the beaver note was actually too much for me. A quality fragrance despite my not liking it.

nikoleta1

Pure musky smell. Similar to original Eli Saab.

Synesthesia Lia

What a wild ride this is.

For the first few seconds of the initial spray, I only smelled chemicals and roses. Then the black currant hit like a whip crack, biting into the rose, leaving it neither sweet nor sour, but giving it an olfactory urgency. Then castoreum burst forward and underscored that urgency, making it deeply carnal. As if that carnality weren't potent enough, the musk appeared.

For the first 45 minutes or so, this juice needs a safeword. It's lust with nails and teeth. Sure, the nails are blood red and well-manicured, and the teeth are perfect. It's unabashedly primal, just well groomed.

On me, the amber didn't appear until about an hour in, and initially, it made the composition metallic up close. I could taste it. (The same thing happened with JHAG "Not a Perfume," which is all ambroxan.) That metallic "note" faded, thankfully, and the amber became warm. This for me was the afterglow stage, the time for sharing secrets, which Mad Madame does after she has her riotous way: only then could I detect the vanilla, the tolu balsam, and the sweet florals.

In the dry down, the vanilla and tolu continue to sweeten the remaining rose, amber, castoreum, and musk. With the heart notes receding, the animalic notes become urgent again, but the overall sweetness makes that urgency tender. Needy still, yes, but we're going slow this time. Almost achingly slow. Mad Madame is nowhere near finished.

I've been wearing this for seven hours, and this has finally become a skin scent. Not once have I detected patchouli or oak moss. I've looked for them, but on me, they're not coming forward at all. I got at least a peep of everything else. The castoreum is so strong, though, that I'm not surprised some notes become hidden entirely.

I'm not sure whether I love this or loathe it. I've waffled all day. At times, I've drank this in, thinking "this is so nasty," but continuing to drink. I'm unable and unwilling to stop the madness and scrub her off. She's bewitching, really. I'll have to let her wear me again before I make up my mind. I wouldn't be surprised at all were I never to make up my mind about her. She is mad, and perhaps part of her plan is to drive me mad, too.

ETA: I wore Mad Madame again, this time ahead of some deep cleaning (vacuuming, scrubbing baseboards, etc.) My goal was to see how she would behave once I got really hot and sweaty. She was even more herself, but better, and I highly recommend wearing her at such times. The experience was amazing, almost heady. I felt invigorated in a bizarre way, and did more work than I'd planned. I didn't even want to shower afterwards because I didn't want to wash her off! I think I love her now.

b.gracious

Scent - animal fur & rose musk.

Season/Time of Day - I prefer to use this one in the colder months, during the day.

Projection - I didn't get noticed, I didn't get a compliment.

Longevity - I get 8hrs consistently.

spinderella

A very interesting rose! Grown up, but still a bit sweet, and - for a Juliette has a gun perfume - a lot of ooomp. Not for shrinking violets, but not headache inducing either. Good. Full bottle worthy. On wishlist.

aspirina

Sexy big plump rose with a dash of dirty patchouly, tuberose and castoreoum. This is glamorous and very grown up.

stargazer_1118

got a sample from Sephora and sprayed myself. It reminded me of the Middle East fragrance of rose and oud. I felt like I should have been in a hookah bar smoking shisha. smelled nice but not for me.

jillian.brown

After days of tamer, fruitier fragrances, I wanted something different. Something I was a little afraid to try. I do love roses and the color red, but I tend towards greens and soft florals. The reviews didn't help: unwashed? Urine smells?? And the comparison to Paloma Picasso, which gave me a migraine when I accidentally spilled some all over my hands (long story). But I bit the proverbial bullet and sprayed some behind my knees, my safe spot for risky fragrances.

Wow, I'm glad it was colder today, cus this one has heft! Scented the bathroom for hours by default. It's one big spicy slightly dirty ROSE. Reminds me of my mother's Fragrant Cloud rose bush; huge spicy strong coral-colored blooms. You don't want to sniff too deeply or you might get dizzy.

Then the patchouli comes out, but then again my chemistry takes patchouli and just runs with it. This wasn't as obnoxious as other patchouli fragrances on me however. Good thing the rose stuck around.

To be honest I was a little disappointed. The name Mad Madame and the color of the bottle remind me so much of an antagonist from Lauren DeStefano's Chemical Garden trilogy, an older brothel madame who wears crazy outfits and tons of costume jewelry and smells like oriental perfumes and the heavy incense she burns constantly. And is often on mind altering substances. I would have liked a little incense added. But I guess that Madame would just wear vintage Opium, and I know that doesn't agree with my chemistry at all.

I'll stick with the roses.

SuzanneS

Mad Madame..
How I wanted to love you...Your notes, idea of a big chypre...all dashed with my allergic reaction to ISO-E Super. I smell this beautiful rose perfume .(dont worry this isnt vintage at all..more like "vintagesque" but very modern)...then..ACHOO! Big sneeze letting me know Iso E is present, throat tightens and well thats the end of it for me.This is a beauty if she resonates with you..dont be afraid to try her. I just wish she liked me!! :)

Perfumeaddict777

I was gifted a JHAG discovery kit from a friend here on fragrantica! Mad madame was one of them in the kit. I think this is stunning and sexy. I thought i didn't like casterom or civet, well i was wrong! I love it in here! It gives this perfume depth, warmth and a slightly dirty musky sex appeal. At first spray it smells very similar to Red Door . After it mixes with my skin chemistry it turns into a powerful red rose, musk, woods and i do smell moss and casterom. After hours it dries down to a soapy musk. From the discovery kit this is one of mine and my husbands favorite. Longevity is 8 hours on my skin ,sillage is a good 2 to 3 feet for the first hour and after that it's soft to moderate. Imo its worth the money. Please dont let the casterom scare you off, this is blended so well and this perfume wouldn't be special or even warm without the casterom.

onaona

Mad Chypre!

The chypre label seems an olfactory category all over the place in perfumery at the moment. Modern chypre (while lovely) bear little resemblance to the oakmoss laden powerhouses of the past. For me though, traditional chypre has a rather distinctive, olfactory structure. One I frequently give a wide berth,

Mad Madame is very much in the traditional chypre vein.

First and most importantly, it has that "chypre bite", which is beautiful, but can also be extremely off-putting and disturbing when left to approach you unchecked.

Mad Madame is chypre sharp, but not so much as to turn you away. It strikes me as a starter fragrance for those left feeling a bit bullied by chypre releases of years past. It has a powerful presence and is somewhat over the top and heavy, though not unbearably so. Just enough so to make you feel you are making a big, interesting statement by your choice.

Noteworthy Notes
rose
moss
castorum
patchouli
and the sense that there's something both old and new here

Mad Madame is a rosy, green, mossy, bossy throwback chypre. Not all the way back, but far enough :)

craftyminx

I was hoping for a lovely rose and patch scent rather than the musk explosion here. It's too much. For musk lovers I'm sure it would be a beautiful scent, but that is really all I get from it.

I think I'm in LOVE! Blind bought despite warnings because I was attracted the the pretty red bottle and the other JHAG fragrances were a huge hit. I'm so glad I got it! I didn't think I would like it based on many of the notes and some reviews.
Mad Madame will definitely be my winter signature this year.
Rose, Peony, jasmine, moss?? A touch of patchouli and a blast of musk! YES! It smells gorgeous and with the temp cooling down, even better. Lasts about 8-10 hours on me. Goes strong for the first few then calms down a bit. I would say sillage is moderate on me.
Only one problem.... Hubby doesn't like it.

Neosmiaphyte

It opens with beautiful rose and something that smells like my dad's cologne growing up. Luckily, freesia quickly swept up that mess and laid rose down. Masculine animalic musk surprisingly draws me in.

She might be a Madam, but her scent lingers on her men in a way that does not betray his secret because he can wear this too. Easily unisex.

mirrorghost

i love rose in many forms-especially strong and/or dirty ones, so i was hopeful upon trying this one. my pet peeve with this and many other modern scents- these start off SO strong and chemical. first off i smell rose, some black currant and a strong musk and maybe some castoreum but not much, if any. i definitely get the metallic thing others have mentioned as well. the peony amps up to 11 as it often does and it just smells like chemical flowers. i am wishing it was more rosy but it's rose with tons of peony and chemicals, unfortunately. after being on the skin about 20 minutes i do get more rose and that peony calms down, but the rose is very metallic.

DariDahlia

Whoever put that it smells similar to Paloma, I KNEW there was something familiar about it!! It's a little different though, I get a little rusty metallic smell. Which I don't mind, it's just strange. A bold choice for sure, it almost takes your breath away. Use with caution. The jury is still out on this one...

ChelleBelle84

I tried a few JHAG fragrances today. Please, no offense to those that like these fragrances. Here are my findings:

Lady Vengeance: Smells like industrial cleaner.

Mad Madame: She's mad alright. So mad she pissed on herself.. in her dirty underwear.

Not a Perfume: Got that right. Can't smell a thing.

And they have the nerve to charge $135 for these?? Sorry, not a fan!

Duskfall

Exploring the JHAG discovery kit...

Maybe I'm finally ready to embrace my inner pervert.

Skankfest. That's what this is. An extremely dirty metallic rose with equally filthy jasmine (very much present on my skin). Add some patch, tube, musk, castoreum...Oh yeah...You get the picture! I'm usually repulsed by strong indoles and they are definitely there right from the beginning, but for some reason I find them fascinating and almost erotic in this one. I'm forced to sniff repeatedly with disbelief: how can something so repulsive smell so intriguing?! It gets more polite as time goes by, but this won't be an inoffensive clean scent at any point.

Of course Mad Madame's performance is close to beast mode. It's long-lasting and projects quite heavily. I'm not sure if I'll have the guts to wear it in public because it's so obscene and easily gives out a very kinky impression. I might save this one for the private smutty moments. :D

Rotemeow

Unfortunately this madam is mad from old age. It smells horrible on me, like an old woman's perfume. I don't recommend this one at all.

Not kidding, it has the dry down of old sun dried manure on my skin. Manure that had grown a single dirty and sad Charlie Brown-esque rose out of its petrified remains. Soooo terrible, I couldn't believe how bad this was. I have queued a few other from this line, as I have high expectations from the grandson of Nina Ricci, but its not a good start so far...

RapidScent

This is perfume! It is remarkably scented. I even dare say it is a unisex perfume. How do I know this you ask? I tried it on my brother first! Lol, I make him my little guinea pig sometimes because I like to see what different people smell like with the same perfume. But, I can say it is definately a very sexy, perfume. It makes me think of ladies in noir genre movies. The mysterious lady, with beautiful features, but she hides a secret. She is bold, and it shows in her taste of luxuries. Mmm, so delicious.

LadyBeth

I'm dying to try Mad Madame.

I would love to trade for sample of anything in my collection. Most of mine are vintage, just FYI

@Nefaria I bought this because of the notes and the reviews. I lost my sense of smell in the mid 80s due to surgery but still retained my love of perfumes. Everytime I wear I get compliments. I really like this house because the perfumes have good sillage, bring compliments and are a step outside of the common scent trails going on today. Nefaria, you are too funny. I am aged, have 39 cats, have a wonderful life and I am a DIVA. No fur coats but a few faux suede. Not covered in cat hair. True divas are meticullous in their cleanliness. I loved your review, you made me laugh. Thankyou. Now im even prettier with my beautiful smile and my so, so sexy perfume ; )

This madame is more a bewitching enchantress than mad. The rose comes through but it is a deep, rich rose. It is what a Black Baccara rose should smell like. The rose gives way to slight freesia and muskiness but is tempered by the softness of amber which keeps it from becoming too sharp and abrasive. This is a perfume for evening or when you are wanting to drawn someone near. I hear Nina Simone singing "I Put A Spell On You" in the background! I put this on and my husband happened to come home and actually said I smelled "amazing". His descriptives of my perfume and cologne choices rarely get more than an "it's ok" or "alright" response if any. This JHAG really worked with my chemistry which is not usually the case. This is not a scent for someone who enjoys soft, subtle scents or light fruity florals. Mad Madame is beguiling and intense without being too extreme and if you can handle her she's waiting to take you on a sensual adventure.

Skayalily

As a kid, my dad had a little toy we called the "stinkyman," a hollow rubber figure that wafted a smell when you squeezed it; I'm pretty sure that it must've been castoreum inside there. Mad Madame smells just like L'Eau De Chloe, if L'Eau De Chloe were stored inside the "stinkyman." A bright green, bitter (not unpleasantly so) opening and then PatchiRose; nice enough, just like L'Eau De Chloe. But overtop there's the huge waft of dirty, musk and castoreum. I usually like musk and I don't mind dirty, but these notes/accords don't blend well for me.

Rissatish

Mad Madame is a bad bitch and I love her. She has such a loud, vivacious, unforgettable personality. She is the type of girl that says what everyone else is thinking but are too afraid to admit. I imagine Amy Winehouse-- retro glamour, red lipstick, cat-eye liner, big hoops, chain smoking cigarettes. She is a mad, sultry, vixen with depth and animalistic tendancies. She is flawed and beautiful-- yes "thorny". I love wearing this for a night out of debauchery. (Just as a warning, the animalic notes get louder and louder as the night goes on.)

Hippo Princess

A complex but coherent scent. This is a heavy, velvety, deep red rose. There is an animalic quality to Mad Madame, heady and ripe and indolic, which contrasts with a sharp aluminum odor. I can detect a sweet jammy note and a creamy vanilla, and like other reviewers mentioned, something like rubber.

I was instantly attracted to the presentation of this perfume; even the feel of the heavy opaque bottle feels luxe. Like the sweat of a beautiful and angry Disney villain.

****
this was an instant love for me, i had to buy it on the spot after i tested it! it's a thorny malicious rose with a lot of animal hide in it. a lot of something kinky and bizarre and maybe hard to approach. the rose is almost unrecognizable, it's not sweet jam like, or even a true-to-nature type of rose, but a chemical almost caustic flower drained in animalic notes. i can almost hear it hissing when i apply. there's harshness and austerity in it but also awe inspiring beauty. whoever said there was no beauty in evil? a gorgeous villain, like poison ivy.

missFeline

This JHAG smells like luxury. Luxury of having robust personallity, luxury of being able to express yourself and maybe show off...but in a classy way!

It really has something special. It's strange, loud-ish but you cannot forget it and want to smell it again and again.

I don't really admire rose smell but in this perfume I like it. Probably because it's not soapy. In fact, it develops the concept of a rose : soft beauty showing it's spikes.

To me personally it shares the concept of cold/warm beauty with Ange ou Demon. Many yars ago I used to think that the latter has that strange cold note but it got me interested and eventually I fell in love with that smell. Well, comparing to Mad Madame it's a soft and fluffy smell. Mad madame is stonger, louder, more brave but still has that soft (in this case rosy) ethereal side.

ntabassum92

What I wish Agent Provocateur had smelled like! This is a very sexy rose: deep, musky, animalic. I clearly smell the castoreum more than anything else. When I smell this, I think of my mother's old coats and shawls that you'd put on a few days after she'd worn them and they smelled deeply of perfume mixed with the scent of wool and fiber. This perfume has sweet undertones as it dries down, due to the white florals and the black currant, perhaps. It's interesting as the top is very heavy, and the undertones are more light-hearted and fresh. I really like this perfume - it's sexy in the bold 80s style. Even one spray lasts and projects well - be careful not to overdo this one!

4 out of 5 stars :)

Carefully searched, thought about it and blind bought this baby last year and boy it was not a disappointment! It shocks you with that metallic icy rose at first -nope I was not afraid, I knew this was coming- and then it turns into that soapy, powdery but filthy patchouli rose monster with a whiff of currants. It does not smell that animalistic to me- which is a shame, I really wanted it to- but I'm so happy how it mixes well my skin. It's an on your face screaming fragrance, but I know I can carry it well and it kind of hangs tame on me but I also know it's not for a goodie goodie girl. You need to show your balls to sport this one. Great sillage, people almost always notice it and also it stays forever on you.
It's my signature scent now, love love love it.

Strange_Alchemy

This was walking into a broken down Art Deco greenhouse.

There are roses, blowsy and beautiful, earth and rusty metal. Berries bake in the manufactured heat somewhere near by. A lady sits sweating on a chaise in the back, reading a leather-bound book with a glass of Rioja.

The image is as strong as the fragrance. Sillage is massive, and it lasts - a scarf I had worn wafted the ghost of it days later.

Totally worth a try if you love roses, and this is unlike any rose frag I've tried thus far, what with the moss and metal mixed in.

Gentle suggestion: 1 spray will suffice!

glitteralex

I have sampled this perfume 3 times, all under different circumstances, to better grasp its essence. I often have to do this with aldehyde-heavy compositions such as this. Last evening's cold temperature and moderate moisture proved the perfect testing ground for this tightly wound Patchouli Rose. Like some red wines, it was bitter, almost tannic to start off. It needs the warmth of skin- but not ambient heat or mugginess- to bloom. After ten minutes, I found Mad Madame to be fairly linear-Aldehydes, Damacscan Rose, and Patchouli. Sillage was modest but longevity quite good.

I truly admire the Rose-Patchouli genre, it is one of my favorites. However, Mad Madame never seems to calm down- she's always on the verge of shrieking. I do find her to be very close to my beloved David Yurman signature, but without the requisite roundness I require in a patchouli base. If you are a fan of this genre, may I suggest: "Deneuve" by Catherine Deneuve/Phenix/Avon, "Fantasque" by Louis Feraud/Avon, "Elle" by YSL in both EdT & EdP versions, and "Paestum Rose" by Eau de Italie.

cheekyberd

This is a great scent for autumn/winter. Smoky amber, red roses and tar. Yes, tar! You get the faintest whiff of it at the deepest level. Just right for roasting chestnuts outside. I love it!

HanamiTsukimi

If Madame is mad, she's mad for roses, which show up as a full bouquet right off the bat. This is an animalic, almost oily rose... even almost sweat-laden rose. Very rich. This smells like a daring young sophisticate who isn't afraid of leaving an impression.

There's just a hint of sweet berries in the background, as well as more than a hint of what I'm sure is ambroxan, a trend that runs deep through all of the JHAG fragrances. If it weren't for that note, which becomes more overwhelming as it goes, I'm sure I'd like this one.

It gives me "Doctor Zhivago" feelings, if that makes any sense. It's what I imagine a wealthy woman wrapped in furs might smell like on a cold winter's evening, alluring and bold and warm.

Jillzilla

Wow, my skin chemistry must really be clashing with the castoreum note here, because a very sharp, synthetic rubbery note is overpowering the rest of the composition for me. Every once in a while I think I smell a waft of rose, then I smell an overriding pungent and sharp rubber note. Clearly for my skin, castoreum does not translate to "warm", "animalic", or "leathery". I've had it on for over an hour, which is usually more than enough time for a scent to dry down on me, yet I've sensed no change. I'm disappointed I can't actually smell the composition as a whole!

genny17

I personally do not find it green, nor fresh, it is heavy at first, like a boozy rose scent, but it evolves rather fast, it reminds me of Citizen Queen, in the blast of patchouli, then the drydown gets lovely, smooth, warm, sensuous, the Madame isnt so mad anymore. there is a hint of leather....I can see the red color in part due to the punch of the top notes..I find it classy actually, and really fit for all women out there...this spells quality..and character..as for me, if I found a bottle at a good price, I might buy it..it is still pretty much a rose scent, not oldish, rather modern, with a twist of vintage somewhere though
Update: can't handle the top notes so I won't be wearing this fragrance!

falstaffiv

Well officially the main ingredients are rose oxide, blackcurrant bud absolute, ambroxan, patchouli essence, hedione HC, tuberose absolute and white musk.
This one was very strange at first, different from others JHAG perfumes.
Decided today to try an old sample i've found and glad i did. This is very green smelling, fresh and penetrating at first, but soon it gets softer, less loud and maybe even warmer.
I can't say that this is rose dominated perfume.
Certainly it has clean and greenish, sparkling feel that tends to turn creamy, and patchouli here is more in the background, overpowered by clean musk and all that freshness and flowers.
A perfume is on a constant contrast, a cold-hot role is in here.
Also, officially listed are, fresia, peony, moss, tolu balm, vanilla, castoreum, animalis.

Well, to me this is a perfume that really describes its name, really mad one, a tank full of energy. It brings a sense of self-confidence, it brightens up your mind, and like magic, when there's no tiredness, everything is more sexier.

Update:
This is clearly a musky scent, a very long lasting one. And I love musk.
But to me, the whole composition is intriguing due to the some unusual components (have read about them), and on the plus side, it is very harmonious, and wearable in warmer days (can't imagine that someone could wear it during winter season, no way).
Yes, i'm pleasantly surprised.

qatarkind

When I smell this perfume I imagine a very beautiful blond woman wearing fur walking to her luxury apartment in the hotel. She is very intelligent, calm, and confident.

Arlene-Beatrix

Nice scent, but a bit sour on my skin as many rosy scents are. I can't see any madness in it, to be honest. It's rather a scent for good girls.

MadeiraD

This makes me think of a sweeter, rounder version of Sa Majeste La Rose by Serge Lutens. Lutens' version is tarter, greener, a little more astringent, this is sweetened with amber and black currant and rounded out by leathery castoreum and warm tolu balsam. It's cozy and a little dirty, kinda like sunday morning before you shower... kinda like a sunday morning roll in the hay before you shower, when the bed is all warm and nice and they're all warm and nice and yeah.

It starts sharper and greener (but still not as sharp and green as the Lutens creation) and warms and softens, leather and musk coming in, other flowers blooming in the background but the rose always remains. It also somehow reminds me of a less geranium heavy version of Vicky Tiel's Sirene

Mad Madame is a wild ride from start to finish.

A skanky, thorny, green rose. Sits equally well on a man or a woman - so long as you have the attitude to pull it off.

Mad Madame opens with a smack of green, dry rose. Sharp and quite masculine, with a peppery patchouly edge creeping in. It pretty quickly morphs into something a lot smoother, but by no means safer.
As Mad Madame develops, a powerful animalic skank joins the spiky rose front and centre, and for the next hour or so these two accords fight for top billing. It's a lovely contrast - Green, spicy rose and hot, sweaty musk.

It eventually dries down into a glowing, floral musk. Still wildly animalic but with just a hint of soapiness to pull it out of barnyard territory.

Longevity is excellent. Sillage is quite heady for the first 20 minutes or so, but fades down into moderate territory for the rest of the wear-time.

Savage, garish, oddly both modern and vintage in feel. Mad Madame is an excellent choice for informal events on brisk evenings.

This is not your Grandmother's rose... Unless your Grandmother was a fur-wearing, chain-smoking, underground, criminal gangster.

zimmer73

Today I finally realized which other scent this beauty reminds me of. Elie Saab.
Especially the top and basenote.
I just LOVE the Mad Madame <3

zimmer73

Received my "Mad Madame" today, and WOW! She know how to make herself noticed. I am not a rose-fan, but to me this scent lacks that old lady vibe that rose scents tend to have..
Maybe it is the amber and patchouli I love so much in this mix.
It is loud, but not in a bad way.
It is kind of vintage in a new wrapping.
It is my new favourite for sure!

labradorite

I find the bottle design very much in harmony with the scent: definitely roses with thorns. Mad Madame is unquestionably a rose scent, but not for those weak at heart. It's dry and harsh, green, earthy, musky and something carnal. It makes me feel desirable but also brings the question "Do I want someone smelling like this around me?" to my mind. The people I asked found it smelling nice, but there's something in it that makes it a not very friendly fragrance.

I smell a lot of patchouli and tuberose in it. Now both of these notes are very polarising scents: they can smell either sweet and pleasant or sour and intruding. It's the case of the latter in Mad Madame. I actually smell damp wood as well, which might be the combination of patchouli and tolu balsam. I did my best to find the castoreum in here, but luckily(?) I don't seem to detect it. Mad Madame doesn't smell like urine or rat cages or anything along these lines to me, but that's completely up to what a person's skin chemistry picks up on.

I'd say Mad Madame is definitely a wild rose scent, very interesting but it takes a lot of confidence to wear in public. I can't exactly say I like it as it's far out of my comfort zone of warm fragrances, but it doesn't leave me untouched either. It's interesting and it's gnawing on the corner of my mind. I know I'll come back to it as many times as it'll take to accept the beauty it offers.

Ruffienne

Mad Madam is a luscious dame.

Strong, strong, strong opening of "red" roses and some intense floral that may or may not be tuberose - while it's certainly very floral it's also a little generic - well balanced white flowers are pronounced.
This then gives way to an assertive but fairly mellow blend of patch and rose and what is probably castoreum.

While the opening certainly knocks your socks off, MM actually isn't too strong or worrysome to wear. Assertive, yes, but not in an overbearing or even particularly obtrusive way.

It's just a confident, rose-dominated scent with a good deal of longevity and sillage. Not really all that mad at all.

Worth adding to any rose-lover's wardrobe, especially as an alternative to all those demure tea-rose types.

Lana148

Mad Madame is fabulous!

It is not for a faint of heart and definitely not a girly scent. This one was created for elegant, confident lady, who knows what she wants and not afraid to stand out.

This composition is made in a vintage fashion, so not to be scared of the opening and let the fragrance develop.

This is very sexy, rose-white floral composition. It's also fresh - green and sour notes are very pronounced. Musk, patchouli, amber are on the background but newer overshadow the floral blend. It's made out of quality ingredients, and it shows.

This reminds me of Agent Provocateur, but Mad Madame feels younger, and isn't heavy on patchouli. Dry-down is very similar to Soir de Lune Sisley.

This is gorgeous! Very classy but contemporary at the same time!

gfp

it is not a perfume in the traditional way. it smells artificial but that is its beauty. a friend of mine smelled it on me and asked me to buy it for her as a birthday present. i took it as a compliment. :-)

kay0981

My first impressions of this fragrance were quite mixed. I don't really like animalic smells, and Mad Madame definitely is very animalic, particularly in the opening. The castoreum note is strong and pungent; and alongside with the dark, raw amber (normally one of my favourite notes) it creates something very uncomfortable and off-putting. It smells dirty, sharp and pungent, and is quite difficult to wear. However, it does get a lot better with time. After the initial burst of intense animalic notes, Mad Madame begins to unveil its softer, smoother side. The drydown is dark, deep, and almost gothic – with prominent rose and musk accords; it's still very bold but not as loud and sharp as the opening. If you enjoy musk-based fragrances such as Narciso Rodriguez then you are quite likely to fall for this one, too. It's too spicy and animalic for me, but I can see how many could enjoy it.

Despite my mixed feelings on this one, I can still appreciate Mad Madame for being a very unique and daring scent. This is the kind of fragrance you'd wear if you want to be noticed – it definitely isn't your typical crowd-pleaser. Mad Madame is bold, confident and unapologetic – she knows what she wants, and she is ready to do anything to get it!

All rose, all the time.
That is all.
It's not that I don't like roses, but this is "HI, I'M ROSE!!" and she's just a little too loud for me.

jessbug

I'm sitting here with Mad Madame on my wrist and a very confused expression on my face.

Rat urine? Plastic? Hospitals? I don't get any of those. And I can't help but feel a little disappointed by that.

The nose for this perfume isn't listed on Fragrantica, but I'm willing to bet money that it's Francis Kurkdjian. His typical musk base (Narciso Rodriguez EdP, Elie Saab EdP) is very recognizable in this. The JHAG rose is present, reminding me of the Chloe EdP rose, but also triggering memories of Agent Provocateur,.

I have worked with castoreum, and on its own it is pretty disgusting and indeed 'plasticky', as some have mentioned here. I don't recognize it as such in this perfume. That is not to say that it isn't in there, but it means that it is well blended with other ingredients, to pull out a 'sparkling' effect in the floral notes that makes me think of champagne. It certainly is not the second-most obvious note in Mad Madame. I've learned to distrust the voted pyramids on here as they seem to be very sensitive to marketing ploys and 'peer copying'.

All in all, I really like this. It has a very similar feel to Elie Saab EdP, so I'm not 100% convinced I need this in my wardrobe, but I would definitely wear it if I had it. I just wish Mad Madame was a little crazier!

Seriously, Agent Provocateur EdP is WAY scarier than this.

kxnaiades

My first thought was "Did Miss Charming go nuts?" I get the charming, berry sweet rose that personified Miss Charming. However, I also get in equal amounts, a lot of musk and something spicy? I'm not sure what is causing that peppery effect, but it is at odds with the sweetness of the rose. I get the flowery effect that comes from the peony, similar to the peony vibe in Miss Dior Blooming Bouquet. I get some jasmine without the indoles but I don't get any animal smells here, to my somewhat disappointment, being a fan of animalistic scents. No Bal a Versailles going on here according to my nose. The patchouli and amber show up when the peppery notes disappear in the drydown. Sillage is good and longevity great, I've not had a problem with JHAG when it comes to either. This lasted more than a day on clothes. With some imagination I can get the story around Mad Madame but try as I might, I don't smell any animals in here. It's still worth getting if you are into spicy sweet rose musk patchouli. Which is what lingers in my nose and in my head. Another JHAG that goes on the want list. I just don't know if Miss Charming will stay on that list now that I've got someone more interesting.

evesoho

Usually, on the first day of "ladytimes" I reach for Stella by Stella McCartney, a smooth melancholic rose with some dark amber, peony and fruit. Today, I wanted to try a different rose, but along the lines of Stella, meaning nothing too soft. Cue the applause - this is not only *interesting*, but a perfect fit for my raging day!

Turns out, this perfume is aptly named. Where Stella goes melancholy, Mad Madame goes... well, a little mean and bitter, a little dirty, a little green with envy, and certainly quite mad... sounds just like me on one particular day every month.

Just to be clear, this perfume to me is just a little bit of this a little bit of that. I don't think it's a classic or a game-changer, but I do like it.

I really enjoyed it while wearing my hair down with soft waves and a few bobby pins, with comfy bell-bottoms, walking shoes, a faded blue henley - and my denim jacket for the first time this year! I might venture to think that if you dress Mad Madame up, or even wear something casual but bold coloured or structured (like a blouse with a sharp collar), the perfume might seem a little harpy and squeal a bit. I do think that with blue jeans and a tee or casual sweater, the Mad Madame is a sassy compliment. :)

ScarlettX

Before I tried it, I thought that it must be the weird one. It has castoreum note in it. I don't know how castoreum smells, but I don't feel anything too weird in this perfume.
In my opinion, this perfume is very sexy and even vampy. At the beginning I felt patchouli, amber and some musk in it. Later it calmed down to really nice rose scent. Very pleasant.
I can only feel little bit of musk in it, nothing overwhelming.

nikoleta1

Such a great intriguing perfume, sexy, floral with a musk. Will report later on drydown and longevity.
It is a copy of Saab le Perfume. Saab is more opulent and lasting, but the concept is very similar.

Nefaria

Warning: negative review.

If you've ever kept rats as pets, you know the smell. I didn't even know the notes when I sprayed it for the first time but it immediately reminded me of the smell of a rat who's been sleeping in its own spoiled cage.
I can also smell a little bit of floral air freshener through this.
The type of woman I would see wearing it: 80 years old, owning lots of cats, wearing dirty old fur coats covered in cat hair, using dark red lipstick and dramatic eye make-up. An aged wannabe-diva whose life is not exactly as glamorous as she imagines.
Something positive: the name is spot on.

Mikprittie

This is an interesting Miss Charming. The opening notes won't reveal that because I seem to get opening of tolu balasm and the oily rubber. Then transitions to tuberose which is very suprising for a couple of seconds then the drydown of miss charming all the way. This is a cloaked Miss Charming do not be fulled, if you like miss charming but thinks its lacking something, try this, might just be what you are looking for.

renperd

After a full wearing from an official sample I can say that this to me is a very masculine fougere type fragrance similar to Chanel Egoiste Platinum in the dry down. It's a bit thicker, denser, less fresh and quite a bit less pleasant to wear. I do get the 'bite of the beaver' (castoreum)which I'm normally rather partial to, but I won't be scraping my coffers to buy Mad Madame while I've got back-up bottles of Platinum.

laantjebanaantje

This goes on very strong with an INTENSE amber and rose. The hot, fleshy, rubbery tuberose that catches in the back of my throat is also quite dominant. But this perfume isn't floral. It's dense with amber, balsams and castoreum and even the florals aren't floral.
Mad Madame is hot and plasticky, but also very feral and furry. Wild and without bounderies, but within the context of our civilization. Not a "free", natural sort of wild.
It is sexy, but clearly man made.
It is quite strangely unsettling for me. I somehow can't get around the picture of latex clad figures in a BDSM club. Not that such a place would necessarlily smell like Mad Madame, but it just evokes that picture in my mind.
There's a scent I recognize from childhood. The first time I have such an experience. But I can't quite identify this scent. Maybe the tuberose in my mother's favorite LouLou? Maybe some kind of make up she used?
There's also a medicinal quality that I enjoy very much. If that reminds people of oud, I should start sampling some oud fragrances right away.
I really enjoy this scent, but it's as far removed from my peronality as humanly possible. So, not really wearable for me, but an interesting sniff!

hybiscusgirl18

If there's a word to describe Mad Madame, it would be "feral", because from the start this controversial Juliette shows her animal side with no restrictions or shame (at least to my novice nose).

Opening with astringent green notes, Mad Madame flashes her teeth, making you know that she's not a force to tempt - everytime I smell these first notes, I can imagine an angry woman à-la-Jessica Lange branding a riding crop, wearing dark leather gloves and sporting a red bright leather corset, but in tamer days just a red coat. A friend of mine compared it to the eponymous fragrance of Paloma Picasso, another powerhouse with a red and dark feeling.

Some time later, the green teeth retreat back -never completely disappearing- and an oily rose heart comes slowly from the shadows to the center of the stage. At first it's a simple pungent rose swimming in its own oil with some patchouli somewhere, but as it evolves, its true nature is displayed to nose: that of a flowery oily animal with green teeth and claws, a strong but seductive core thanks to the combination of the rose and the impudent creaminess of the tuberose, and even a layer of fur, courtesy of the musk and castoreum. I guess that's why Monsieur Ricci used furs in the ad: to warn people of its feral creation.

It is true that Mad Madame doesn't fit to all tastes: many call her aggressive, many call her vulgar for using a true stole in a vegan faux zone, many call her old fashioned, and not too few even deem her unoriginal. While all those opinions are valid, one thing is for sure: Of all the Juliette clan, Mad Madame was created to not leave people indifferent; and I must say, she accomplished her mission.

starvega

The opening of this is actually very pretty, a mix of rose and what seems like a hint of green, but within 10 minutes this dries down and intensifies massively into the same rose and a very strong animalic note. I would not describe it as fecal as others have, but it has the animalic, slightly 'body odour' type of smell to it.

After about three hours it has died down to a quiet musk that I can only smell by pushing my nose against my skin.

Not my cup of tea tbh but it smells well-made and blended for those who like more animalic fragrances.

mothandmagpie

My first review...here goes.
Imagine a dark mossy forest floor at dusk, deep in the heart of the woods. A single plucked rose lies on the damp ground, its thorns laced with blood. The rose is darkest red, velvet petals on your cheek soft and heady. It loves you, it loves you not. Here a harsh metallic cough syrup, now a cloying floral, warm like cinnamon, close like incense. But turn away and it draws you back in. If it is a moment, it is Beauty and the Beast embracing.

OZ

At first it smells like a less patchouli version of Lady Vengeance. Immediately the animalic note kicks in, which goes very well with the rose I gotta say. I believe this fragrance would suits very well with a mature, mysterious and sexy woman in a cold winter night. Very beautiful :)

virga

Love it: Mad Madame is strong and complex rose scent with prominent leather note and animalic twist. The thing I like about this fragrance is that it combines darkness, wilderness and rationality, intelligence. It gives the impression that a person who wears it truly knows what she or he (it could be easily worn by men too) wants and how to get it. In the times of sweet boring politness Mad Madame stands out as something rare and exceptional.

amandaj1024

While I love the smell of fresh roses, I have not been able to find a rose perfume that I like (most seem to smell cloying, sickening, and way too sweet on me) until I sampled this one. It is very soft and feminine. It reminds me of Bvlgari's Mon Jasmine Noir, but with rose instead of jasmine. Both have a sharper green smell to the florals and a slight hint of musk. While I don't love it enough to want a full bottle, I do enjoy smelling this sample on my wrist.

laetitiavp

I absolutely love this scent...I didn't expect to like it. I wore my sample today and had no clue as to what the notes might be. I smelled a sharp and pungent rose which took me head over heels! Something greenish as well. I thought there was some toned down oud. But no oud in this fragrance. I suppose it must be the castoreum, though I utterly don't know what castoreum smells like. Something incredibly sexy I assume.
I don't smell anything medicinal, hospital-like, fecal, pee-like, etc Neither anything leathery and I usually dislike leather! It may be a question of chemistry. It's just a very spicy and deep rose, with a hint of blackcurrant freshness. I find it extremely sexy and addictive! It also lasted all day, which is rare on my skin!
After reading the reviews, I am really hesitating to buy a full bottle because I am afraid of annoying others.
Still, I love it so much!

freddinos

Its opening was an equal blend of roses and musk on my skin, did not care for it at all.
BUT the drydown was an amazing ethereal smell, the type you find in perfumes like Piguet's Calypso and Lancome's vintage Magie Noire. Interesting, would recommend to people who love floral woody musk perfumes or rose-chypres.
Thank you littlepepperz for the generous sample:)xx

Cereza

Love at first sight.

I could not believe how well this smells as I was expecting to be turned off by this creation.
Instead I got a beautiful cold rose and spices at the opening soon followed by a beautiful leathery/animalic background and sexy/feminine rose at the open for next 6 hours.

I simply LOVE IT. One of the best modern animalic roses I've tried so far.
If a skanky rose is your thing - do give it a try, you might as well be surprised.

WOW!!!

I don't like this, but I do admire it. It's a very witty perfume. Something I imagine Alex, from "Orange is the New Black" wearing in pre-incarceration days. It smells of roses and ambergris, more "vintage" then "old lady."

littlepepperz

This is mad indeed! Insane!

Everybody smells something different - either leather, musk, roses, turpentine, tuberose, metal, hospitals, fur, jasmine, patchouli, antiseptic, soapiness or dirtiness. To some it even seems green!
Most inconsistent reviews I've ever come across! How can one scent be all of these things?!

I'm going to add to that mix that what I smell is old fur odor with leftover perfume on it (strong powdery musky floral, vintage perfume).
This is too animalic for me and as someone who truly hates fur this only brings back bad memories of clearing out old furs from my dead grandmother's wardrobe. It gives me this unsettling, gloomy feeling. I just can't shake it off. However well done for creating such a mad scent, if you love it - it will make you stand out for sure.

Mad Madame by Juliette Has A Gun is a floral chypre with a prominent rose note, but I definitely would not call this a “pink chypre”. I consider MM to be a very contemporary fragrance, but it clearly draws inspiration from traditional compositions. MM opens with strong white florals, rose oxide, and leathery notes. After about 30 seconds, a fecal note appears and then folds into the warm animalic base as a permanent fixture. The animalic aspect of MM is very suggestive, and perhaps “Busy Lady” is a more appropriate name for this fragrance. There is acidic warmth tying the rose oxide to the leathery base; the salty, tanginess is balanced by the intense perfume-y quality of the white floral and rose. Overall, I’m very impressed and consider MM to be an exemplary excursion into contemporary filth. Although this fragrance is not for me because I’m squeamish when it comes to wearing rose, I highly recommend MM.

Great performance; overall 4/5

The madame must be mad--she doused herself in turpentine. That is what this fragrance smells like: turpentine and synthetic roses.

This is my first post here.Ever.
I don't care about other details, I fell in love with ALL Romano Ricci's fragrances, he is a genius.
I first had Lady Vengeance and it was great but not very long lasting.
I got Mad Madame for Christmas and since then I avoid using it because I like it so much and I'm affraid it will dissapear at some point and then I won't find another perfume to make my hair smell so good :) Yes, it lasts very long on my hair and clothes..talking weeks when it comes to jackets/scarfs.
Some people say it's a fragrance for mature women buy I totally disagree, smell like intelligent and modern young women having coffee in a very urban area.
So...conclusion...roses in the city.

Well i exclaimed when sniffing this on paper " well this has a bit of excitement to it, quite an edgy Rose!" Certainly its animalic, the notes above are identifiable..rose, leather, tuberose with that musk & oakmoss base. The overall feel is "strong & sexy" a modern musky leather floral with a lot of rose & patchouli base. For those wanting a dark floral with the animalic edge thats quite powerful, do try.

Redpula

Men would love sniffing this scent on a woman. Men with an adventurous attitude to perfume may wear this that is if his skin would match with it. Mad Madame might remind the wearer of Montale's Red Aoud but less the sting and complexity.

This is an amazing blast of rose combined with a medicinal tone. An in your face powerful but outstanding top notes able to impress sophistication, sensuality and pure pleasure. I smell a vibe of an oud or maybe this is the tolu balsam exuding a very light fecal scent but nicely covered by floral, woods and fruity notes. A light sweetness but the balmy feel made it bitter and dark as well.

I applied with a generous dab (a half spray equivalent) but I am pretty sure, it will leave trails of "who was wearing that sexy scent" to the people passing by on you. But be warned, like Red Aoud, the sensual rubbings to their nose may lead to an embarrassing situation when you over applied. It can happen so be very careful on the trigger.

After 5 minutes, I smell tuberose, slowly revealing in and out as the rose, tolu balsam and woods, linearly dominating the initial journey. It is somewhat herbal too, I cant say its green, or should it be, then it is quite minimal on my skin. It ain't smoky at all but is aromatic and airy.

Mad M. is a rich, deep, bold, well refined composition that brings out admirable feelings which other supporting notes does not matter anymore because the rose is beautifully and hauntingly crafted. You have to wear this on a formal occasion and a masquerade party but never wear too much or you might end up alone in a corner for hurting people with your thorns instead of captivating men and women with your pleasurable rose whiffs.

Yes, a rose like no other.

It has been 25 minutes now from my dab and ending this review. I would expect this to last on me for more than 8 hours and hoping, with its linear form, the further drydown would impress on me more of the sensual Madness from a beautiful Madame.

antqueen

I get exactly the same sour, slightly faecal note as in Dior Oud Ispahan

sootica

Fur use disappointing - but is it faux? Also are the animal derived scent elements synthetic copies?
I see no justification for the use of modern farmed real fur - tragic.

CIOGHIUZEL

I tried it today! I find it sexy, even the bottle is fancy! And I love fur and own few fur items! Nothing wrong with that!

Yamba1

It's is a very different offering from Juliette Has a Gun who have to date been defined by their polite and well behaved rose centric perfumes.

Mad Madam is intriguing to say the least. The marketing by use of fur alluded to the animalistic nature of this composition and intended to shock it's audience. For the record it didn't shock me, but it did pique my curiosity as I am always keen to try a new offering in the animalic genre.

The first blast of MM is green as others have stated, but also very floral and feminine. Looking at the pyramid i thought i was going crazy but to me it rather resembled Guerlain's Idylle. A quick comparison of the notes does in fact show similarities of rose, freesia and white flowers, so I maybe I'm not so crazy after all!

It's only after about 15 minutes that the memories of fur clad women come back to mind. Yes, now this is all about animal and I can understand those who have found it unsavory. I've been sitting with it for some time now and my assessment of MM is that it is Guerlain's Idylle with a hefty dose of animal glands.

So for anyone wanting to deviate from the pretty floral and take a walk on the wild side, I would recommend this bad girl.

Thanks Scorpiosheep for the sample xx

Amazing scent. I love it. It smells to me very much of jasmine, but it is modulated in a very particular way. Although almost all female fragrances have jasmine, so they say, and many even in the name, I do not know of many current fragrances which do smell of jasmine, which I love, and this one does. To me it is a jasmine bomb. It is from my viewpoint very well conceived because Jasmine is as I said modulated in a very particular animalic way. Although the overall feel is very different, it does remind me of Ysatis. It has a very particular scent nevertheless and that is in part, I think, for having amber in the opening, It smells very animalic, since the beginning, and while the jasmine opens opulently and then the base notes give it another very deep animal touch. I think I smell these three levels very sharply. They burst out of it. I did not even know this brand, but by the way, the brand name is lovely, unusual and lovely.

goingblonde

Couldnt put my finger on the "odd" scent I was getting till I read the review below that said reminded them of a hospital - BINGO that is exactly it - a crisp clean antiseptic soapy smell -not crisp/clean in a good way- in a institutional way
UGH to that :(

No other notes come out for me

kankri

In the vial Mad Madame smelled very sweet and litchi-like to me. As soon as it actually touches my skin, though, all the sweetness is gone. My first impressions? Rose and patchouli, with a strange spiciness.

Later on, all that's left is that heavy spiciness, like black pepper (is this castoreum?), and something like a weak soapiness. Reminds me of a hospital, yes, the soapiness. No flowers, nothing. It makes me wonder if I've got a sample labeled incorrectly here, or something. It's not offensive or anything but I don't like it.

I wanted to really like Mad Madame, due to the fact that I have some friends who are "madams" and I would like to find a reason to gift it to one or other of them. But it opened nastily, smelling of pissy pants, and it gave me a headache. I tried really hard to find another smell but it was swamped with animal sex. I washed it off almost immediately and moved on to something else much much sweeter. But then I read some reviews, went back and decided to stick with it for longer. Took some paracetamol before I started ... Still opens smelling sharp, yes the animal thing comes right out at me and the traditional Juliette velvety rose is there but very heavily masked by civet. After 5-10 minutes, I can feel the amber/moss coming through as leather for me and (thankfully) the civet going away, not really getting chypre, but its drying into a pleasant floral sweetness. I complained of it to my bloke when he came home, and when he smelt it on my hand, he couldn't smell pissy pants at all, he said it was "rather lovely" ... so we experimented with putting some on him. He liked it very much, and in fact I wondered whether it would work as a unisex smell. After a while (perhaps positively influenced by my Beloved), Mad Madame grew on me. Quite a lot.

Didn't like it at first, almost gave it away but decided to give another try, I'm glad i did! I would call this daring, defenetely for those days when you need to feel or to be seen strong or need a boost. For the same reason i can't help to think of Gucci Rush, not that they smell similar but they both bold and elegant, for a young active woman, certainly not one of the pink girly fragrances.

Loredana0108

At first I didn't like it. No, It made me sick actually. But I gave this scent another try the second day and I don't regret it. It is wild, raw, metallic, animallic. Not your typical ladylike smell nor something you can be neutral about. You either hate it or love it. It is a strange combination of flowers, metal and the smell of a hospital room. Obviously not for the faint-hearted. Although I will not wear this, hands down for this original and powerful scent created in an era of sweet vanilla girly scents.

COSMICSCENTS

I will never buy anything from this brand because of the ads!WTF?

*sophi*

Love at first sniff ...this is very good! A chypre floral, with a strong jasmine-rose opening, but it grows dynamically with intense aromas of woods and moss becoming more intense and modern. The presence of patchouli is also evident giving depth to the composition . Very powerfully flavored, distinctive and modern.

Thaigirl

A very harsh opening which I did not like. Then I was shocked how much this reminded me off Lady Million by Paco Robane ? Am I the only one who noticed this ?
I did not smell any beavers in it lol, but I felt kinda dissapointed, expected more from JHAG.

hilda-marie

tested it today. in the opening notes there was something I didn´t like, but now several hours later it is like youner and softer sister of sisley´s eau du soir. it is "green" parfum for me (at least on my skin)
may be the advertisment photos are not most welcome (personalliy I cann´t get any connections between those girls and the name of parfum. "mad madmoiselles" should be better? :)

PlunketNurse

Happy to be the first proper reviewer, Strange how notes can be reintepreted differently. What my card from Romano Ricci said : Rose "Oxyde" , Ambroxan, Patchoulli. Being very familiar with Ambroxan i can happily vouch for the heavy hand of it here, almost stiffling indeed, a stark contrast from the lovely and clean ambroxan dilution (aka Not a Perfume) This thick metallic amber note is animalic at the same time, and piled on with a fruity lychee-red rose (courtesy of the Rose Oxide , im pretty sure oxyde is a ingredient mispelling), again accentuated by Tuberose to bring out the lushness and overtly femininistic heaviness associated with perfumes of an older era. It is luxurious and decadent animalic floral with the right ingredients but wrong proportions, but a somewhat unbalanced one to me, due to the overload of ambroxan and sweetness.does not smell like a chypre, little development. Nice , i can see people adoring it, just not a masterpiece.

lucifera

IMHO perfumes would smell much better WITHOUT civet or beavers in it..i dont think i will like this :-(

daisyM

LOL, people! If our ancestors did not dress in those horrible furs, we would not be here to flag our political correctness!

MarketaBankova

I would never buy it because ot this silly add.

smell<3like<3candy

I agree with what everyone is saying about the advertising photos. What. The. Hell. I picture a mature and sexy woman who is classy in a very old fashioned way and has gone a bit off the deep end. Not a twenty something in badly fitting jean shorts and a murdered animal. I can picture this woman "adopting" the nearby foxes, not wearing them. Perfume ads are a special art form and seeing them so badly executed makes me wonder if they managed to accomplish the "Mad Madame" concept in scent. I think they probably did not.

truffles

Agree with leeyah. I'm shocked by the sight of the dead animal around the woman's neck in the ad. Wouldn't even bother to smell the perfume in protest at this. Anybody disagrees, I just don't care!

kl99

Have You ever seen a real fur Elen?
Well, they are.

Elen70

leeyah: Are there real furs on the models or artificial? That is the question :)
The scent would be beautiful, I hope.
