Camping in Greece

Hippie van in Greece

Way back in the 60's and 70's you could camp just about anywhere in Greece as long as it was not too obvious, for example in the middle of a public beach. We would go to the islands with 1000 drachma which was about $30 with sleeping bags and a tent and sleep on beaches in Mykonos, Ios, Crete and even Santorini. And if you could do without a tent you could sleep just about anywhere. But during that period a number of organized campsites appeared because there were people who could not afford to stay in hotels and land owners who could not afford to build hotels. But making a campground on the land you owned on the beach was the perfect way to enter the tourist business on the ground floor. Now it is much more organized and regulated and many of the campgrounds have facilities that make camping just as fun and comfortable as staying in a hotel, including showers, restaurants, bars, shops, activities and most importantly shade. Many even offer rooms and bungalows for people who are not ready to return to the wild but still want to be where the fun is. And many are in amazing locations right on the sea.

So here is a list of some of the campgrounds in  the most popular parts of Greece.
