In college, after studying such varied fields as film, journalism, communications, pre-dentistry, pre-law, and German, Milne eventually earned a Bachelor of Science degree in psychology from Brigham Young University. One of the few things he didn’t study as an undergrad was business, which, ironically, is what he chose to pursue in graduate school, earning an MBA at Penn State University in 2000.
Today, Kevin is a business professional by day, an author by night, and a husband and father around the clock. He and his wife, Rebecca, were married in Washington DC in 1995. They have five children.

Four and a half stars.
After the last book I read, I really needed a complete change of pace. I got it in this book that pulled me in from the beginning. At nine years old, Sophie Jones learns that happiness and all she holds dear can dissolve in an instant. Disaster happened on her birthday. As a result even twenty years later she hates birthdays.
Given her history, Sophie combines two of the things that played a part in the tragic events that shaped her life. One was chocolate and she opens a chocolate shop. The other is fortune cookies. Instead of fortune cookies in her shop Sophie sells misfortune cookies. For some reason, people seem to love her negative comments that reflect her view of life. Comments such as, ’You will soon fall in love. Caution: when people fall, something usually breaks’ or ‘When offered the dream of a lifetime, SAY NO! Remember, it’s just a dream.’
When her ex-fiancé turns up and wants to explain why he left without explanation twelve months earlier, Sophie doesn't want to know. All he wants is one date. She proposes a deal she knows he can never win. Or can he?
This is a charming book that I didn’t want to put down. In fact I was up at 3.30 this morning because I simply had to get back to it. It had me laughing and crying at times and always thoroughly involved with the characters. I loved Sophie and enjoyed the banter that occurs between her and Garrett, the ex-fiancé. The character of Ellen, foster mother to Sophie and Sophie’s best friend Evalynn, is a delight as is Alex, a young man with Downs Syndrome . This is a story of tragedy, loss and guilt and how people deal with them but it is also a story of hope that shows the positive side of human nature as well as the disasters.
The cynic may not appreciate it and either not read it through or dismiss it as schmaltz. However if like me, you are a romantic and an optimist, then you might love it as much as I did. This was just the sort of uplifting, feel good book I needed to read.

Ketika memutuskan membaca Sweet Misfortune, saya berharap akan menemukan taburan pelajaran hidup seperti saat menikmakti buku Alan Milne sebelumnya yang berjudul The Nine Lessons. Membuka halaman pertama saya tersenyum mendapati kutipan di atas, “Some people are lucky in love, you aren’t one of them” dan spontan saya menjawab dalam hati, “Yes, you right,” dan membuat semakin bersemangat menapaki lembar demi lembar.
Mengikuti tokoh Sophie Jones, seorang perempuan yang sudah tidak lagi mengenal kata bahagia akibat berbagai peristiwa menyangkut hati yang ia lalui, mulai dari kehilangan orangtua pada ulang tahunnya yang kesembilan hingga dicampakkan oleh tunangannya. No more happiness, begitulah kira-kira, yang akhirnya membuat Sophie menjadi pribadi yang pesimis. Kepesimisannya ditumpahkan carikan-carikan kertas kue ke-tidak-beruntungan atau misfortune cookies yang (lazimnya ada di restoran Cina) yang dijual di toko cokelat miliknya, dan ternyata laku keras!
Awalnya saya tidak suka dengan tokoh Sophie yang pesimis, memandang kehidupan di balik tirai kesedihan. Namun ketika mencermati kisah hidup dan carikan-carikan kertas pada misfortune cookies yang merupakan luapan kesedihan, saya jusru mulai suka. Dan ternyata dia tidak seperti yang saya kira
Garrett Black, bekas tunangan yang mencampakkannya begitu saja dan punya andil dalam semua penderitaan hidup Sophie, tiba-tiba muncul dan memohon untuk kembali padanya. Bisa ditebak, Sophie menolak mentah-mentah. Namun Garrett terus memohon sehingga akhirnya membuat Sophie mengajukan tantangan bahwa laki-laki itu harus membuktikan bahwa kebahagiaan sejati memang ada. Aneh?
“Dicari: Kebahagiaan. Hanya kebahagiaan yang bertahan lama. Bukan yang hanya bertahan sementara,” adalah penggalan iklan yang dipasang yang sedikit membuat saya tersenyum. Sosok laki-laki yang sangat disukai perempuan dan tidak butuh waktu lama untuk menyukai pria yang kembali kehidupan Sophie ini. Sikap dan perbuatan yang ia lakukan untuk menyakinkan Sophie bahwa kebahagian dalam hidup benar ada itulah yang membuat saya menyukai sosok ini, disamping untai kata-kata romantis yang bikin sebagian perempuan terbang (dan itu bukan saya pastinya). Sosok yang begitu spesial dan tidak tergantikan, sampai dalam buku ini Sophie berucap "...Lelaki sepertimu hanya datang satu kali saat bulan berwarna biru" (h.164) Bener khan.
Novel bergenre romantic yang jadi pilihan bacaan saya kali ini…benar-benar membuat saya sering menganggukkan kepala Nyonya said to my self, “bener juga ya,” sembari tersenyum dan bahkan terharu dan menangis saat membaca surat-surat yang ada dalam buku ini. Lebay…nggak juga ah, hanya saja ada bagian-bagian yang pass banget dengan kondisi kehidupan pribadi saat ini hehehe.
Awalnya agak curiga juga dengan buku ini, jangan-jangan seperti chicken soup atau malah kata-katanya terlalu berbunga-bunga mengingat genrenya, atau kisah cinta yang bertele-tele… dan ternyata tidak saudara-saudara (kok jadi iklan ya). Buku ini cocok buat yang sedang galau..bingung dengan kisah cintanya, dan mereka yang suka Bahasanya yang ringan namun sarat dengan pesan-pesan kehidupan adalah salah satu nilai plusnya, dan realistis.
Kevin A. Milne memang piawai memasukkan pelajaran-pelajaran hidup dalam potongan-potongan tulisannya, dan justru itulah yang menjadikan buku ini lebih dari sekedar novel. 4 bintang buat buku ini. @nick.

"La felicità è un dono che riluce dentro di te. Il desiderio del tuo cuore presto si avvererà."
Credo che questo libro mi sarebbe piaciuto molto di più, se non avessi detestato la protagonista.
Anche io sono pessimista, ma lei sfiora il ridicolo! uscire con l'ombrello d'estate e sotto il sole non vuol dire essere pessimisti e prepararsi al peggio, vuol dire essere stupidi. Il suo rapporto con Garrett poi è fastidioso. Capisco che lui si sia invaghito di lei perché viene descritta come bellissima, ma onestamente chi sopporterebbe una che ogni istante di lamenta del fatto che le sue relazioni non durano? che tanto anche con lui andrà male? Insomma, smettila di piangerti addosso, sei insopportabile! Non mi stupisce il fatto che lui l'abbia piantata in asso ( anche se per un altro motivo ) di sicuro se lo meritava!
Carini i cambi di trama sul finale, anche se ero sicura fin dalla prima pagina che la colpa dell'incidente non fosse di Sophie ( e il fatto che lei non facesse altro che ripeterlo mi infastidiva parecchio ).

Gosh, I'm so tired of clicking 3 stars. I'm also tired of liking a novel up to the 40% mark, feeling let down yet hopeful up to 60% and just wanting to be finished with it by 80%. Is it me and the books I'm choosing or is it just the books? I don't know. So many books these days have great premise and less than great execution. This is one of them.

Чудейки се дали да запазя тази книга в библиотеката си или да я даря на обществена такава, си я препрочетох и установих колко приятна е всъщност. Напомни ми колко важно е да вярваш, да си оптимист, да мислиш позитивно. Трудно бихме могли да променим , това което е предопределено, но можем докато сме на планетата земя , да се опитаме да отдаваме добра енергия .

In walks Garrett after almost a year. He wants a chance to explain to Sophie why he left her, but she refuses. He pleads with her to give him one date, one chance to explain. She then comes up with a crazy idea. She tells him if he will put an ad in the local paper simply stating "Wanted: Happiness", and if she gets 100 good replies, she will honor his wish and grant him one last date. Sophie knows that there is no such thing as true happiness and does not expect this to work. What happens amazes Sophie.
Fast paced emotional thriller, this is more than just a love story filled with secrets and surprises. The back story blends perfectly with the current, leaving you to wonder what is the true meaning of happiness. A page turning all night read.

Sweet Misfortune by Kevin Alan Milne is a fantastic romance with a message of letting go of guilt and learning to trust love. Sophie Jones loves running her candy shop which has become well known for its Misfortune Cookies: dipped in bitter baker's chocolate, each one has a unique, hand-written negative fortune. Unlike your usual fortunes that promise good things and blessings, these predict car repairs, balding, and broken hearts. Sophie came up with the idea after her fiance, Garrett, canceled their wedding just days before the date. Already suffering from guilt from her parents' deadly car accident on her ninth birthday, she had trouble allowing herself to love anyone, so Garrett's betrayal cut extra deep. Now, nearly a year after the break-up, Garrett is back and wants to explain his actions. Sophie sets up a nearly impossible bet with him to ensure they will never have the date he wants, but the bet gets a little out of hand and the whole country gets involved. Milne is best known for writing super sentimental stories like The Paper Bag Christmas, but I think that he's truly hit his stride with this romance. Sophie's pain is palpable, yet Milne keeps her likable. Her stepsister Evi nearly steals the novel away from Sophie, and I hope that Milne writes something for her as well. The story is thoroughly enjoyable, a great escape, but there's a powerful message of letting go of guilt and trusting love again.

A car accident, a want ad, and fortune cookies . . .
‘Sweet Misfortune’, by Kevin Alan Milne, is a contemporary romance that includes these 3 things.
Although, I had a hard time with a few parts that felt far-fetched, it was an endearing story.
My curiosity was piqued from the start and the thread of mystery through out kept me engaged.

Umm, baca novel ini karena pernah liat promosinya di salah satu poster penerbit Qanita, dan begitu baca blurb-nya di Goodreads, saya langsung semangan hunting buku ini.
But well.....
Masalahnya adalah, cerita ini punya potensi yang bagus, saya rasa Mr. Milne adalah seorang penggagas yang hebat, sayangnya, menurut saya, dia bukan penulis yang bagus. Kisah ini bercerita mengenai seorang gadis bernama Sophie yang sudah tidak percaya lagi pada kebahagiaan yang bertahan lama, dan setiap mendapat kebahagiaan dia selalu pesimis dan berharap bahwa cepat atau lambat kebahagiaan pasti akan terenggut darinya. Kemalangan terakhirnya, ditinggalkan oleh tunangannya tepat seminggu sebelum hari pernikahan, membuatnya semakin tidak mempercayai kebahagiaan yang berujung pada lahirnya Kue Kemalangan, kue keberuntungan yang memiliki ramalan mengenai segala ketidakberuntungan.
Pada awalnya saya sangat bersemangat ingin membaca buku ini--novel romance dengan kemungkinan pesimisme dan sarkasme, anyone?--dan bahkan sebelum mendapatkan bukunya saya sudah membayangkan sosok Sophie sebagai wanita yang smart-mouthed-pessimistic, witty, no-nonsense, dll--yang, which is, karakter yang selalu saya sukai. Ternyata? Sophie dalam buku ini berakhir menjadi karakter bitter, tanpa humor, bahkan dark humor sekalipun, terjebak dalam self-pity, dan well, berakhir dalam tangisan ketika kemalangan yang diharapkannya benar-benar muncul.
Talk about stereotypes.
Harapan saya untuk melihat sosok tokoh utama wanita yang tegar dan kuat walaupun tetap pesimis mengenai kebahagiaan hancur seketika. Yang saya dapatkan hanyalah sosok stereotip tokoh wanita dalam kisah romansa, lemah, tidak berdaya menghadapi kemalangan, menyalahkan diri sendiri dan menuduh orang lain karena tidak mempercayai kemalangannya, dan tukang menangis. Tukang. Menangis.
Oh God.
Ditambah lagi, seperti yang saya bilang sebelumnya, Mr. Milne bukanlah seorang penulis yang hebat. Kebijaksanaannya dalam mengatur plot terlihat masih sangat kurang, dengan dimasukkannya scene-scene yang menurut saya tidak terlalu penting untuk diceritakan, atau dengan memasukkan scene deskripsi latar belakang yang seharusnya diletakkan di awal cerita untuk memperkuat kehadiran peran tokoh sekunder, tapi ini malah diletakkan di sepertiga akhir cerita. Hal ini seakan-akan dilakukan karena hanya pada bagian itulah penulis ingat kalau tokoh sekunder juga butuh latar belakang peran dan pada awal-awal cerita hanya berfokus pada Sophie dan Sophie dan Sophie, entah siapa itu Ellen dan siapa itu Evelynn, bahkan siapa itu Randy (pembaca baru tahu bagaimana kisah Ellen dan Evelynn bisa berada di kehidupan Sophie setelah 1/3 terakhir buku, bahkan baru pertengahan buku saya tahu kalau Evi adalah saudara angkat Sophie, dan bukannya sahabatnya. Mengenai Randy? Jangan harap. Kehadirannya di buku hanya untuk menghalangi Garret masuk ke dalam toko Sophie). Bayangkan betapa datarnya peran para tokoh sekunder di awal hingga paruh cerita.
Tapi sungguh, yang paling membuat saya terganggu adalah dimasukkannya informasi latar belakang--yang seharusnya bisa dilakukan di awal--di tengah-tengah scene yang serius. Seperti misalnya:
Ellen: Uh, Sophie, wajahmu seperti ingin mengatakan kabar buruk. Apa aku dalam masalah serius?
Sophie: *muka siap meledak* Tentu, Ellen, kau dalam masalah, tapi tunggu, biarkan aku melihat-lihat ke sekeliling rumah dan mengingat bagaimana awalnya aku bisa menjadi anak angkatmu dan menjadi saudara angkar Evi dalam tujuh halaman ke depan!

Maksudnya, hampir 2/3 buku berisi tentang pertemuan Sophie dan Garret, tentang kencan-kencan yang tidak terlalu penting untuk dibahas, dan hanya 1/3 bagian yang benar-benar berurusan dengan masa lalu Sophie dan konflik novel yang sebenarnya! Saran saya, Mr. Milne, potong adegan kencan-kencanan yang tidak ada hubungannya dengan konflik itu, dan pergunakan ruangnya untuk memperdalam konflik dan menjelaskan peran karakter sekunder! Dengan begitu saya rasa kita bisa simpati pada satu atau dua karakter di novel ini.
Tapi yah, terlepas dari semua hal yang saya proteskan di atas, alasan kenapa saya memberinya 2,5 bintang adalah karena saya masih suka tema dan ide besar dari novel ini, dan saya sangat menyukai karakter Garret dan Alex. Sepertinya Mr. Milne lebih hebat dalam meramu tokoh pria daripada tokoh wanita. Well....
Umm, baca novel ini karena pernah liat promosinya di salah satu poster penerbit Qanita, dan begitu baca blurb-nya di Goodreads, saya langsung semangan hunting buku ini.
But well.....
Masalahnya adalah, cerita ini punya potensi yang bagus, saya rasa Mr. Milne adalah seorang penggagas yang hebat, sayangnya, menurut saya, dia bukan penulis yang bagus. Kisah ini bercerita mengenai seorang gadis bernama Sophie yang sudah tidak percaya lagi pada kebahagiaan yang bertahan lama, dan setiap mendapat kebahagiaan dia selalu pesimis dan berharap bahwa cepat atau lambat kebahagiaan pasti akan terenggut darinya. Kemalangan terakhirnya, ditinggalkan oleh tunangannya tepat seminggu sebelum hari pernikahan, membuatnya semakin tidak mempercayai kebahagiaan yang berujung pada lahirnya Kue Kemalangan, kue keberuntungan yang memiliki ramalan mengenai segala ketidakberuntungan.
Pada awalnya saya sangat bersemangat ingin membaca buku ini--novel romance dengan kemungkinan pesimisme dan sarkasme, anyone?--dan bahkan sebelum mendapatkan bukunya saya sudah membayangkan sosok Sophie sebagai wanita yang smart-mouthed-pessimistic, witty, no-nonsense, dll--yang, which is, karakter yang selalu saya sukai. Ternyata? Sophie dalam buku ini berakhir menjadi karakter bitter, tanpa humor, bahkan dark humor sekalipun, terjebak dalam self-pity, dan well, berakhir dalam tangisan ketika kemalangan yang diharapkannya benar-benar muncul.
Talk about stereotypes.
Harapan saya untuk melihat sosok tokoh utama wanita yang tegar dan kuat walaupun tetap pesimis mengenai kebahagiaan hancur seketika. Yang saya dapatkan hanyalah sosok stereotip tokoh wanita dalam kisah romansa, lemah, tidak berdaya menghadapi kemalangan, menyalahkan diri sendiri dan menuduh orang lain karena tidak mempercayai kemalangannya, dan tukang menangis. Tukang. Menangis.
Oh God.
Ditambah lagi, seperti yang saya bilang sebelumnya, Mr. Milne bukanlah seorang penulis yang hebat. Kebijaksanaannya dalam mengatur plot terlihat masih sangat kurang, dengan dimasukkannya scene-scene yang menurut saya tidak terlalu penting untuk diceritakan, atau dengan memasukkan scene deskripsi latar belakang yang seharusnya diletakkan di awal cerita untuk memperkuat kehadiran peran tokoh sekunder, tapi ini malah diletakkan di sepertiga akhir cerita. Hal ini seakan-akan dilakukan karena hanya pada bagian itulah penulis ingat kalau tokoh sekunder juga butuh latar belakang peran dan pada awal-awal cerita hanya berfokus pada Sophie dan Sophie dan Sophie, entah siapa itu Ellen dan siapa itu Evelynn, bahkan siapa itu Randy (pembaca baru tahu bagaimana kisah Ellen dan Evelynn bisa berada di kehidupan Sophie setelah 1/3 terakhir buku, bahkan baru pertengahan buku saya tahu kalau Evi adalah saudara angkat Sophie, dan bukannya sahabatnya. Mengenai Randy? Jangan harap. Kehadirannya di buku hanya untuk menghalangi Garret masuk ke dalam toko Sophie). Bayangkan betapa datarnya peran para tokoh sekunder di awal hingga paruh cerita.
Tapi sungguh, yang paling membuat saya terganggu adalah dimasukkannya informasi latar belakang--yang seharusnya bisa dilakukan di awal--di tengah-tengah scene yang serius. Seperti misalnya:
Ellen: Uh, Sophie, wajahmu seperti ingin mengatakan kabar buruk. Apa aku dalam masalah serius?
Sophie: *muka siap meledak* Tentu, Ellen, kau dalam masalah, tapi tunggu, biarkan aku melihat-lihat ke sekeliling rumah dan mengingat bagaimana awalnya aku bisa menjadi anak angkatmu dan menjadi saudara angkar Evi dalam tujuh halaman ke depan!

Sophie Jones is a young woman who has had a hard life. She lost her parents in a car accident on her 9th birthday and then was jilted a week before her wedding the year before the book begins. She is certain that happiness in her life is not meant to be. On her 29th birthday, her foster sister Evalynn arranges a surprise for Sophie - her ex-fiance shows up in Sophie's chocolate shop, asking for a chance to explain why he left. Sophie doesn't want to give Garrett the chance to break her heart again, so she has him place a want ad in the newspaper. If he can get 100 solid, noteworthy responses to his ad requesting true, non-fleeting happiness, she'll give him his chance to explain. Of course the story goes viral and Sophie is inundated with responses to the ad, whether she likes it or not.
So, on to what I liked about the book - I really liked Garrett's personality and his willingness to really try to show Sophie that he was going to be there for her, no matter what. I also found it somewhat humorous that he was a podiatrist... Don't ask me why. I guess it's better than some other specialties, but not by much! I also adored Ellen, Sophie's foster mom. She was such a rock for Sophie and Evalynn all the way through their lives and gave them so much. I really admire foster parents and all they do, and I felt that she was a truly remarkable, well-written, well-thought-out character. Finally, I loved Alex. He was such a sweet, tender addition to the characters and I was so glad Sophie got to know him. When she first met him at the grave, I figured somehow he was connected to the accident, but I didn't quite know how yet, but I knew it was going to be something VERY significant for Sophie. I felt like he and his dad were the BIGGEST part of her turn-around.
I also absolutely loved the fortunes that were at the beginning of each chapter. A few of them made me laugh out loud, my favorite being, "If good people have good luck, and bad people have bad luck, why is it that you have dumb luck?"
Now for what I didn't like about the book - By about the fifth or sixth chapter, I found myself thinking, "If I have to read, 'Sophie dead-panned,' one more time, I'm literally going to scream!" Overused, overused, overused, Mr. Milne! Come on! We get it. Really, you don't have to beat us over the head. Sophie is sarcastic. We get it. Other than that, I didn't have any real complaints about the book.

This book was prominently displayed in the new fiction section of Barnes and Noble a few months ago, so I added the book to my "to read" list. When a copy finally became available at my local library, I put in a request for it, as the premise of the book greatly intrigued me.
This is my first book by author Kevin Alan Milne, and it's definitely one of the better books I've read this year. The book was incredibly well-written, paced well, and not at all trite. In fact, while it was clear that it followed the stereotypical romantic comedy formula (boy and girl meet, boy and girl fall in love, something bad happens, they spend time apart, and ultimately live happily ever after), I believe that their reasons for being apart are understandable.
Part of the fun these days when reading novels is to try to predict what will happen next. While I was successful in determining connections between characters as the result of a horrific car accident, I still found the book very satisfying. Alex was a gem of a character, and is a wonderful reminder of the importance of surrounding ourselves with things that make us happy.
All in all, I really enjoyed this book. The misfortune cookies, and the misfortunes at the beginning of each chapter, were what drew me to the book in the first place. The relationships Sophie has with her ex-fiance, foster sister, and foster mother never felt forced. If you want a delightful, easy-to-read page turner that leaves you feeling satisfied, I recommend picking this one up.
As a result of reading this book, I'm looking forward to reading more of Milne's work!

Sofie is a glass half-empty person. She's not really sad, but she isn't happy either. When the man who broke her heart returns to her life and wants to try and set right his wrong, she gives him a task she doesn't believe he'll ever complete. He needs to put an ad in the local paper looking for happiness and get 100 viable responses before she will even listen to his explanation.
This is a story about how a single event can be a pivotal moment is not just one life, but many. The perspective that is taken is what makes it different for each person. Each perspective tells a small part of the story, but put them together to get the whole. This story is about heartbreak, romance, love, redemption, and most of all finding happiness even when we think there is none.
I think this is one of the best books I have read in a while. It had the option of being corny and a unbelievable, but it was woven together so well, that it was neither. It really was heartwarming. It is inspirational without being preachy or religious. It speaks of providence and the idea of God, but never goes into too much detail of faith. All those ideas can be interpreted by the reader however you like. Sofie's snarkiness from the beginning had me thinking I wouldn't like her as a character, but she is given depth and growth throughout the book that I found myself seeing much of myself in her.
Overall, just a wonderful read that puts this one on my keeper shelf.

The protagonist of this is unlikeable, but also without personality, other than anger. She shouts or screams at almost everyone. Her behavior is childish and yet, lacking other characteristics. She has no personality beyond rage. This might be understandable had she had a truly terrible childhood, but aside from one huge tragedy, she was raised by a woman who loved her as her own child. She was treated with kindness, got a college education, succeeded in starting a successful business and owns her own home. So, why is she so enraged at pretty much anyone who loves her? I felt no great sympathy for her because she continues to try to ruin her own chances for happiness. Okay, then.
I was very disappointed in the content as I thought we might get to read some of the letters regarding happiness and what it means to various people, but we were denied that. Isn't that the supposed basis of the story? Yeah, you would think so, but you would be wrong. It is mostly about the gorgeous child woman screaming at everyone.
Additionally, the term is Down syndrome, not Down's syndrome. A parent of a child with Ds would know that. No excuses. Do your research or don't write a special needs character.
I didn't like this one much. I wish I did as the premise is intriguing, but the presentation, particularly of the relationships, is flat.

I picked up this book at Costco, thinking it sounded interesting. What got my attention was the fortune on the book’s cover, “Many people are lucky in love. You aren’t one of them.” Sophie Jones is a pessimist, and has good reason to feel that way. Her ex-fiance, Garrett, who left her in tears a year earlier, reappears in her life. He wants Sophie to hear him out on why he left, but she isn’t going to make it easy on him. She makes him take out a want-ad in the local paper searching for happiness, nothing that fleets. Sophie says that Garrett must get 100 valid responses. She doesn’t think he ever will, so therefore she believes she doesn’t have to worry about his reasons on why he left her. This plot, along with a few turns, made Sweet Misfortune a very enjoyable read. I already miss the characters in this story; this novel was really well-written and entertaining.

Il gusto segreto del cioccolato amaro. Kevin Alan Milne
Solitamente i libri più belli si nascondono nei titoli che consideri più improbabili.
Due anime Sophie e Garrett , legate da un destino comune incredibilmente inaspettato.
Garrett la lascia qualche giorno prima del loro matrimonio senza una spiegazione. Dopo quasi un anno si ripresenta da lei nel suo negozio, una cioccolateria, chiedendo di poterle parlare e di poter riparare.
Sophie estremamente scettica e Per nulla incline a concedergli un appuntamento fissa una specie di scommessa; gli avrebbe concesso la chances di riparlarle se avesse trovato 100 ragioni che giustificassero la felicità.
Garrett mette un annuncio sul giornale :
“Cercasi felicità Aiutatemi a ritrovare quello che ho perso.
Suggerimenti alla Casella Postale 3297: TACOMA, WA 98402
(Solo felicità duratura, sostenitori fugacità astenersi).
Per dirla breve questo messaggio diventa virale. Sophie e Garrett saranno letteralmente sommersi da lettere.
Vorrei poter mettere molti più pezzi del libro ma guasterei quella che è una storia struggente, intricata, vanta momenti anche molto toccanti. La storia si sviluppa fra passato e presente in una maniera che all’inizio non riesci a immaginare, in uno stile pulito poetico e romantico.
Ogni parte della caratterizzazione di entrambi i personaggi e di quelli secondari e minuziosa e mai banale.
A partire dai biscotti della sfortuna, creati per il suo negozio da quando Garrett l’aveva mollata quasi sull’altare:
“Naturalmente la cosa che maggiormente attirava i clienti erano i Biscotti della Sfortuna di Sophie, che contenevano uno dei suoi singolari pronostici di crisi, rovina o imminenti difficoltà. Non erano i dolci più buoni del negozio di proposito: nella forma ricordavano i classici biscotti della fortuna, ma venivano intinti in un bagno di cioccolato amaro, la cui miscela proveniva direttamente da una piantagione di cacao brasiliana. Il risultato era un sapore che lasciava sgomenti i palati ignari. Quando aveva avuto l’idea di creare quegli strani dolcetti, undici mesi prima, Sophie pensava che avrebbero avuto vita breve: una novità evanescente. Ma con sua grande sorpresa quei bocconcini amari si erano trasformati in un redditizio prodotto di punta, ottenendo una fama talmente triste da farli scomparire dal bancone tutti quanti ogni giorno. Sophie aveva addirittura cominciato a ricevere ordini postali da altre parti del Paese.”
Questo è un romanzo che piacerà molto a chi predilige la bella storia, il romanticismo, la poesia e il lieto fine speranzoso.
Lo stile di racconto della storia d’amore farebbe felice Janet Dailey, la sensualità è completamente assente e l’ho considerata forse un difetto, anche se per lo stile del romanzo forse qualcosa di più carnale avrebbe stonato.
Però per mia sfortuna,io apprezzo quel pizzico di sensualità maggiore, E dato che comunque dietro il libro c’è un essere umano con dei gusti ,inevitabilmente questa caratteristica appanna appena il giudizio che per quanto voglia essere cattiva, si merita le cinque stelline.

Sophia Maria Jones ha ventinove anni, possiede una cioccolateria e crede che la sfortuna sia l’unica costante della sua vita. Ha accanto delle persone che le vogliono un gran bene, eppure non riesce a guardare avanti il suo futuro senza scorgere ombre e nubi all’orizzonte.
La specialità del suo negozio sono “i biscotti della sfortuna” e ci raccontano con il solo assaggiarli la storia di questa giovane donna segnata da una disgrazia che a nove anni le ha strappato la sua famiglia, lacerandola per sempre, incidendone il suo cuore. Questa ferita non riesce a rimarginarsi, sanguina anche dopo vent’anni dall’incidente che le ha sconvolto l’esistenza.
Il cioccolato amaro che riveste i suoi biscotti non ha solo questa motivazione. Garrett, l’uomo che ha amato e che ama ancora anche se non riesce ad ammetterlo nemmeno a se stessa, l’ha abbandonata a pochi passi dall’altare senza un’apparente spiegazione.
I bigliettini che si trovano nei biscotti di Sophie sono deliziosamente pungenti, sembrano dire “non c’è nulla da sperare”, “chi sogna è perduto”, ma in realtà posseggono in sé la giusta dove di aggressività dettata da un cuore ferito, arrabbiato, ma che non riesce ad essere indifferente.
Per una cinica convinta come Sophie sarà dura fronteggiare la sfida che ha ingaggiato con Garrett; a distanza di un anno dal suo abbandono, l’uomo vuole parlare con la ragazza, un incontro, non chiede altro, ma l’orgoglio ferito di Sophie è un cerbero difficile da sconfiggere. E allora ecco il patto: si potranno incontrare solo se Sophie riuscirà a trovare cento testimonianze di felicità duratura tra quelle inviate all’inserzione che Garrett pubblicherà sul Seattle Times.
"Cos'è la felicità? Penso di potermi sbilanciare affermando che molto probabilmente tutti quelli che dicono di essere felici non saprebbero rispondere a questa semplice domanda. E quanti dicono di saperlo, forse cercano solo di inventarsi qualcosa per sentirsi meglio."
Ricercare testimonianze di felicità solida e duratura non è facile, agli occhi di Sophie tutto è destinato a scomparire. Lettere su lettere affollano la sua casella postale e la giovane sarà costretta a mettere in gioco il suo cuore indurito. Ha eretto un muro difensivo dietro il quale si nasconde, eppure qualcosa lo sta lentamente sgretolando.
Sophie deve fare i conti con il suo passato, sarà solo affrontando ciò che l’ha sconvolta che avrà la possibilità di costruire un futuro.
Sophie è caparbia, risoluta, vuole mostrarsi come una donna d’acciaio, ma il destino percorre strade sconosciute e crea legami e situazioni difficili da comprendere. Sophie lotta contro se stessa, contro il suo cuore e contro il suo senso di colpa, che come un’arpia mitologica le urla nelle orecchie e le strazia l’anima. Ma a tutto c’è una spiegazione e spesso non è quella che ci si aspetta.
Un viaggio nel passato che ha lo sguardo puntato verso il presente, un percorso di crescita e maturazione che la porterà a scoprire la semplicità che sta alla fonte dell’essere felici.
Milne stupisce con una narrativa aggraziata, coinvolgente, capace di parlare d’amore e di felicità anche al cuore più sordo e senza scendere nel banale. Le emozioni che permeano il romanzo hanno lo stesso gusto forte e deciso del cioccolato di Sophie.
Una storia che sa commuovere, che ci fa sorridere e ci permette di sognare. Nella vita di ciascuno di noi ci sono stati momenti in cui la sfortuna ha bussato alla nostra porta, Milne con Il gusto segreto del cioccolato amaro ci insegna che non dobbiamo chinare la testa lasciandoci sconfiggere dal peso che sentiamo gravare sopra le spalle, al contrario dobbiamo imparare ad assaporare tutte le sfumature di ciò che ci viene incontro, quasi fosse un pezzo di cioccolato fondente che insieme alla punta di amaro ha anche la sua dolcezza, proprio come la vita.

La specialità del suo negozio sono “i biscotti della sfortuna” e ci raccontano con il solo assaggiarli la storia di questa giovane donna segnata da una disgrazia che a nove anni le ha strappato la sua famiglia, lacerandola per sempre, incidendone il suo cuore. Questa ferita non riesce a rimarginarsi, sanguina anche dopo vent’anni dall’incidente che le ha sconvolto l’esistenza.
Il cioccolato amaro che riveste i suoi biscotti non ha solo questa motivazione. Garrett, l’uomo che ha amato e che ama ancora anche se non riesce ad ammetterlo nemmeno a se stessa, l’ha abbandonata a pochi passi dall’altare senza un’apparente spiegazione.
I bigliettini che si trovano nei biscotti di Sophie sono deliziosamente pungenti, sembrano dire “non c’è nulla da sperare”, “chi sogna è perduto”, ma in realtà posseggono in sé la giusta dove di aggressività dettata da un cuore ferito, arrabbiato, ma che non riesce ad essere indifferente.
Per una cinica convinta come Sophie sarà dura fronteggiare la sfida che ha ingaggiato con Garrett; a distanza di un anno dal suo abbandono, l’uomo vuole parlare con la ragazza, un incontro, non chiede altro, ma l’orgoglio ferito di Sophie è un cerbero difficile da sconfiggere. E allora ecco il patto: si potranno incontrare solo se Sophie riuscirà a trovare cento testimonianze di felicità duratura tra quelle inviate all’inserzione che Garrett pubblicherà sul Seattle Times.

Ma a tutto c’è una spiegazione e spesso non è quella che ci si aspetta.
Un viaggio nel passato che ha lo sguardo puntato verso il presente, un percorso di crescita e maturazione che la porterà a scoprire la semplicità che sta alla fonte dell’essere felici.
Milne stupisce con una narrativa aggraziata, coinvolgente, capace di parlare d’amore e di felicità anche al cuore più sordo e senza scendere nel banale. Le emozioni che permeano il romanzo hanno lo stesso gusto forte e deciso del cioccolato di Sophie.
Una storia che sa commuovere, che ci fa sorridere e ci permette di sognare. Nella vita di ciascuno di noi ci sono stati momenti in cui la sfortuna ha bussato alla nostra porta, Milne con Il gusto segreto del cioccolato amaro ci insegna che non dobbiamo chinare la testa lasciandoci sconfiggere dal peso che sentiamo gravare sopra le spalle, al contrario dobbiamo imparare ad assaporare tutte le sfumature di ciò che ci viene incontro, quasi fosse un pezzo di cioccolato fondente che insieme alla punta di amaro ha anche la sua dolcezza, proprio come la vita.

Touching and Sweet
This book came at a very crucial time for me. Reminded he of what happiness is and how important it is in may life. Some happiness is fleeting but necessary. Some happiness is lasting but it all takes work. I've wondered long and hard all-out what I would write. I don't have the answer, but I know reading helps me remember happiness when in struggling.
I enjoyed this story. It have me all the feels. It made me giggle, it made me cry, and it made me reflect. No, I'm sure the book isn't perfect but it was pretty perfect for me in this moment. Loved the characters and how the grew, developed, and came to a conclusion.

I assumed that this book would either be food fiction or a romcom. It turned out to be neither. But it was still immensely enjoyable, just a little heavier than I had hoped for. The book goes to some very dark places but it always feels gentle and honest always. That makes it not triggering. Still, you might want to tread cautiously if you're sensitive to descriptions of fatal accidents.

Questa è una storia sulla felicità.
E sul dolore.
Una storia sulle seconde occasioni. E sui sensi di colpa che ci perseguitano per tutta la vita.
Una storia amara. Una storia romantica.
Ok, ricominciamo daccapo.
Protagonisti indiscussi di questo romanzo sono Amore e Felicità, ma fanno di tutto per camuffarsi, per presentarsi sotto mentite spoglie per tutta la durata della storia; il lettore sveglio, ovviamente, non si fa ingannare e li riconosce immediatamente, anche se nomi e fattezze sembrano diversi.
Il punto focale è: li accetterà, dopo averli riconosciuti, o metterà da parte queste pagine perché si prevede saranno troppo sdolcinate?
Nonostante io non sia tra le amanti dei romanzi stile Nicholas Sparks, che a detta della quarta di copertina dovrebbero essere entusiaste di questa lettura, ho scelto di concedergli una possibilità.
Com'è andata?
Il romanzo ha una partenza davvero efficace: alle prime 100 pagine si era già guadagnato 4 piene stelline (anobiane). Resami conto che ormai ero arrivata quasi a metà storia, ho iniziato ad abbassare le aspettative e ad attendere il risvolto deludente. Che stranamente tardava.
Vi racconterò cosa ho letto, giudicherete voi se ho fatto bene ad amare questa storia...
C'era una ragazza che non voleva amare. I suoi genitori morirono un incidente quando aveva nove anni, incidente di cui la piccola Sophie si sentì sempre colpevole, perché aveva distratto il padre dalla guida per convincerlo a realizzare il suo desiderio: andare nel negozio di dolci migliore della zona.
La ragazza non voleva assolutamente amare finché nella sua vita non entrò Garrett, il ragazzo perfetto. Carino, ironico, dalla battuta pronta, romantico se non romanticissimo che riuscì lì dove tutti avevano fallito: convincere Sophie che lui non l'avrebbe abbandonata, che le cose belle sarebbero durate, che l'amore esisteva ed era duraturo.
Sophie alla fine dovette credergli, si affidò a lui, gli si confidò e gli disse che sì, l'avrebbe sposato.
La felicità esisté finché Garrett non se ne andò. Senza un perché. Tradendo ogni promessa, confermando ogni dubbio che era stato un tempo cancellato.
Fu così che Sophie tornò più forte di prima a non credere, a non affidarsi, a non vedere più l'amore e la felicità. Iniziò a distribuire il suo cinismo agli altri, attraverso i suoi dolci, i suoi biscotti della sfortuna, imbottendoli di messaggi negativi sulla vita, sugli esseri umani.
(vi lascio un piccolo assaggio dei suoi "consigli" al mondo:
Non sarai mai veramente felice. Che tristezza.
E' amore o compassione? Non soffermarti su questo dettaglio.
Non lasciarti affascinare da una persona disperatamente romantica. Finito il romanticismo, rimarrà solo la disperazione.
Se ti si presenta davanti il sogno della tua vita, di' di no! Ricorda che è solo un sogno.
In una cosa riesci veramente bene: il fallimento.
La felicità ti schiva con precisione.)

Eppure tutto intorno a lei le parlava d'amore: una mamma adottiva, Ellen, adorabile; una sorellastra, Evy, anche lei adottata, che le restava sempre accanto come una vera amica; un ex-ragazzo pentito del passato e deciso a riconquistarla...
Nulla di tutto ciò avrebbe mai cambiato la sua ferma decisione di non amare più, di non credere più nella possibilità di felicità.
Per sé e per gli altri.
Ma un annuncio su un giornale sembra smuovere le cose, capovolgerle, restituirle la verità e finalmente la serenità.
Un libro romanticissimo, in alcuni momenti strappalacrime, scritto da un uomo.
Ingenuamente pensavo che tali storie appartenessero esclusivamente alla sensibilità femminile, ma mi è stato fatto notare che non avendo mai letto Sparks, o Musso, (ok, lo ammetto, un romanzo di Musso l'ho letto) non potevo pronunciarmi al riguardo.
Gli uomini sanno parlare d'amore e sanno anche far emozionare. Sanno descrivere il ragazzo perfetto, l'appuntamento perfetto (oddio, quanto ho desiderato che al primo appuntamento - ma anche al secondo terzo quarto... - mi si portasse in un planetario a guardare le stelle!), l'amore perfetto. Kevin Alan Milne l'ha saputo fare mescolando dolcezza, ironia, e tanto ottimismo.
Forse ha descritto una storia che non esiste nella realtà, dei personaggi troppo adorabili in tutto per poterli incontrare, delle situazioni improbabili, è vero, ma sono tutti questi elementi che mi hanno permesso di sognare...
...e hanno fatto scoprire anche a me il gusto segreto del cioccolato amaro.

I've been reading a lot of heavy books lately, so this book was a welcomed breath of fresh air! Cute story that was easy to read. A good romance story always leaves you feeling happy.

Che dire di questo libro, mi è piaciuto molto!!!mi ha catturata della prima pagina fino all'ultima, non sono davvero riuscita a staccarmene.
Nel momento in cui ho letto la trama, mi è sembrato carino, ma non mi aspettavo tutte le emozioni che mi ha fatto provare!!!
Protagonista di questo libro è Sophie, una ragazza di ventinove anni, che ha da sempre una passione per il cioccolato, e gestisce un piccolo negozio di cioccolatini. Nella vita è stata molto sfortunata, prima rimanendo orfana all'età di nove anni, poi essendo stata lasciata ad un passo dall'altare, di punto in bianco, da Garret l'uomo che amava e che ama ancora, nonostante non voglia ammetterlo.
E' una donna che vista da fuori sembra molto forte, ma dentro si sente cadere.

Il giorno del compleanno di Sophie, che per lei è un giorno decisamente no (poi scoprirete perché), dopo un anno in cui non si sono più incontrati , ricompare alla porta del suo negozio Garret, per chiedere un appuntamento e raccontarle finalmente il motivo per cui l'ha lasciata. Lei rimane sorpresa e arrabbiata, non vuole sentire nessuna ragione. Ma lui non demorde, e alla fine arrivano ad un compromesso: se Sophie riuscirà a trovare cento testimonianze di una felicità duratura tra quelle inviate all’ inserzione che Garrett pubblicherà sul giornale Seattle Time, allora lei accetterà il suo invito.
Da qui inizieranno ad arrivare lettere su lettere, e Sophie oltre a rivangare il passato, scoprire la verità e finalmente andare avanti, dovrà lanciarsi in questa nuova sfida, quella di convincersi che al mondo una felicità duratura esiste (come per esempio, sapere che l'adorata figlia, che ha dovuto lasciare, è felice, sta bene ed avrà una vita migliore di quella che la madre poteva offrirle), anche se tarda ad arrivare, e anche se prima possono capitare cose veramente brutte,
Una dura impresa che porterà la protagonista alla felicità, ad abbattere quelle difese che ha eretto per non soffrire più!
Questa storia mi ha emozionato veramente tanto, mi ha fatto riflettere, mi ha fatto sorridere, e alcune volte è scesa qualche lacrimuccia, quindi posso solo consigliarvi questo libro!!!
Lo stile di scrittura è molto semplice e scorrevole, quindi si legge velocemente!
Nel momento in cui ho letto la trama, mi è sembrato carino, ma non mi aspettavo tutte le emozioni che mi ha fatto provare!!!
Protagonista di questo libro è Sophie, una ragazza di ventinove anni, che ha da sempre una passione per il cioccolato, e gestisce un piccolo negozio di cioccolatini. Thank you Goodreads for your giveaways, what a wonderful way to get a book to add to my collection. Thank you Kevin Milne for allowing me to, not only,receive a hardback copy of your book for free ,but also,one that you autographed. When I first began to read this book I thought what a nice easy read; a simple book about love, loss and overcoming that loss with a happily ever after at the end. Sweet and simple. Was I in for a surprise! It was so much more than that! The title is so appropriate; but you find that there is so much more to those two simple words because there is so much more hidden between the front and back cover of this book. What a wonderful surprise to be reading along and all of a sudden your just sitting on the edge of your seat half way through the book like an impatient little kid bouncing up and down in their seat with excitement. And your book was definitely filled with a little excitement. There are those that would be tempted to flip to the end of the book and read the last chapter, but if they did they would miss the most endearing part of this book covertly hidden in the middle. I thoroughly enjoyed Sweet Misfortune. And it was so much more than what I anticipated when I first began to read it. It is much more than a simple love story. Like life, there's a lot of messy stuff in between the beginning and the end. This book goes from a lalala moment to an OH WOW moment when you least expect it. I was not expecting that OH WOW moment which really made this book special. I won't give away anything because I want to intrigue other readers to read this book and have that sudden wonderful surprise. Kevin Milne, you have written a wonderful book and I hope there are many other readers, who after having that OH WOW moment reading it, recommend it to everyone they know. Congrats on a great book!

Let me start off by saying I'm a sexist pig and was immediately put off by the fact that the writer was male. Don't ask me why that was just my reaction.
I've said it before I'll say it again 9 times out of 10 I think that telling a story from multiple character's points of view show's a lack of writing skills and takes away from the story. Milne took that too a whole new level. Not only did he use multiple points of view but he switch those view paragraph to paragraph it was disturbing and distracting. I would have given his writing style a negative 2 because of that, but since everything else was good I conceded and gave him a .5.

I'm not sure what exactly was the problem with the plot and the main character I just plain didn't like them. The overall idea was good but there were soooo many unrealistic aspects. The worst for me was the ending car crash. Come one Garrett knew of her fear of driving of her past with car accidents there's now way he's pull up besides her call repeatedly and honk IN THE RAIN. I'm calling bull shit on that. I disliked the relationship between Sophie and her "family". I think in reality there should have been way more trust lost over the fact that Garrett knew from the get go that Sophie's parents died in the same crash as his dad. I just didn't like it. I'm sure lots and lots of people will disagree with me and I'm fine with that.

Chose this light quick read following the reading of Eugene Onegin by Pushkin. The story is about Sophia Maria Jones who loses her parents in an automobile accident on her ninth birthday. Like many a child, Sophia wanted something special on her birthday. She wanted to stop at her mother's favorite chocolate shop. When her father said no she kept asking. Distracted, the accident occurs and her parents and grandmother are killed. For the rest of her life Sophia carried the burden of guilt believing that she had caused the accident. As she matures she opens her own chocolate shop, falls in love again and again only to be abandoned time after time. She is convinced that she is doomed to live without love until she meets Garrett Black who adores her. However, shortly before the wedding he, too, abandons her only to reappear months later wanting a second chance. Sophia doesn't want to see her heart broken a second time so she resists day after day. As this light story unfolds one discovers that the guilt Sophia felt was shared by others. Don't look for much meaning in this tale. It isn't there and could have been told in many fewer pages. However, if you like romances you may enjoy this read.

When I write a review, I don't bother summarizing the book, unless it diverges highly from the publisher's description. Sweet Misfortune follows true to its summary, although I admit that I expected more from the novel than it gave me. It is a light, well-intentioned piece of writing, meant to inspire optimism in the hearts of romantic cynics and offer a dash of God's providence along the way. I found that latter theme, "God's providence", to be boringly overused to explaining the solution of the puzzle of misfortune for Garret and Sophie, as well as leading them to the expected passionate reconciliation. Once or twice is enough. Unfortunately, I also found some odd choices in word usage which had me shaking my head, wondering what his editor had done. Of particular note was his use of the verb " FLEETS", in reference to anything in life which is impermanent, to support Sophie's sour view on happiness. "FLEETS" is, by every dictionary I looked at, categorized as "Obsolete" or "Archaic". Sweet Misfortune is a little book which will be enjoyed by readers who like a bit of escapism and romance, and who don't mind a story with little originality aside from its title and sweet misfortune cookies.

Sweet Misfortune by Kevin Alan Milne provides a fun and light read that keeps the reader hooked. I greatly enjoyed this book, so much so that I didn’t set it down until I finished. Kevin Alan Milne will prove to suspicious readers that men can write fun, sassy romances. While Sophie’s life overflows with heartbreak, the story never bogs down with sadness. On the contrary, it remains light and optimistic even though the main character is a “the-glass-is-half-empty” kind of girl. Following the main theme, each chapter opens with a fun misfortune that I often felt compelled to share with others.
Sweet Misfortune frequently elicited laughter and now proudly perches on “My Favorites” list. I definitely will read this story again—very soon! I wish I could find more books that left me as happy as this one. If you like romances, you cannot miss this novel.
