Ma cosa ho letto?
La storia in sé non è male, né per la storia in se stessa, né per come è strutturato il libro in cui, a ogni capitolo viene attribuito il nome di uno dei quattro gusti fondamentali (Amaro, Acido, Salato, Dolce) e poi di alcuni dei cibi principali giunti in Europa dal Continente Americano, con una breve storia delle prime importazioni e dell'utilizzo degli stessi. Il protagonista maschile del romanzo, infatti, Alex, è uno chef scorbutico che aborrisce qualsiasi cibo proveniente dall'America: guai a chiedergli una salsa di pomodoro o delle patatine fritte! Lui considera quei cibi demoniaci. E infatti il suo ristorante si chiama Antic Món, Mondo Antico. [Più avanti si scoprirà per quale motivo Alex non voglia sentir parlare di America e quindi abbia bandito gli alimenti provenienti da lì dalla sua cucina.]
È la protagonista femminile del libro, la sua nuova aiutante, Annette, che proviene dal Quebec per sfuggire a dei gravi problemi in cui si è cacciata, a cercare di convincerlo a integrare il suo menu con dei cibi che sono ormai fondamentali nella cucina catalana, proprio raccontandogli l'origine dell'utilizzo di quegli ingredienti, forte degli studi di antropologia dell'alimentazione che ha effettuato quando era in Canada.
La storia, però, si perde in gelosie, vendette, e soprattutto in una grande superficialità morale dei protagonisti. Per esempio, come fa Annette a dire di essere innamorata di Alex, e poi lasciarsi coinvolgere in un'ossessiva relazione lesbica con Carol, che non ama, non stima, non vuole!?
A tutto questo, si aggiunge uno stile confusionario, un minestrone di tempi verbali, che non danno la minima idea al lettore della giusta sequenza dei fatti. Perché, come al solito, non esiste trapassato prossimo (figuriamoci!) Poi si passa a piacere dal presente all'imperfetto al passato remoto, tanto da non dare neanche un'idea precisa di quale sia la durata del libro stesso e di quanto tempo sia passato da un capitolo al successivo. Ora, non so se la colpa sia dell'autrice, del traduttore o degli editor; ma è inaudito che Sperling & Kupfer abbia potuto pubblicare un libro scritto tanto male in italiano! Tanto da farmi chiedere più di una volta: "Ma cosa sto leggendo?".
E poi, un piccolo particolare - questo errore immagino sia proprio dell'autrice. Se Alex non vuole servire ai suoi clienti cibi provenienti dal Nuovo Mondo, come mai prepara al capitolo 5 un succo di papaia e mango per Frank? La Parellada si è distratta: dal momento che la papaia non rientrava tra i cibi su cui voleva costruire uno dei capitoli, e preoccupata solo di non far bere un alcolico al ligio musulmano mozambicano, è andata a scovare proprio un frutto proveniente dal Messico??? Ho capito che il succo di papaia è buono, ma forse avrebbe potuto limitarsi a un centrifugato di mela, per sicurezza!

I didn't like the book, maybe because is out of my taste and it didn't have something for me that makes me enjoy this book. No offense I hated this book.

Pocas veces leo un libro de autoras o autores españoles, no porque no me gusten sino porque no me encuentro con muchos o no conozco a muchos, así que cuando sucede normalmente me sorprenden. No es una historia particularmente difícil o complicada, es más bien sencilla pero disfrutable, sobre todo la parte descriptiva de la cocina, quiero pensar que la autora disfruta de cocinar o tuve asesorías que se agradecen porque solo lograba que lo descrito se me antojara demasiado.
Y no solo eso, los personajes son realmente agradables de leer, sobre todo Álex (y no porque compartamos nombre) sino porque su forma de ser es admirable, esa característica de no quedarse callado y decir lo que le pasa por la cabeza sin antes procesarlo y que por momentos pudiera resultar odioso, pero a mi me resultaba cómico que dijera todo lo que pensaba, además de que su historia me conmovió y la forma en como está estructurado; lo hace real, no es perfecto pero busca la perfección en su cocina y en su restaurante y en todo lo que lo rodea. Así que si, disfrute mucho a Álex, es un personaje memorable.
En cuanto a Annette, también la disfrute porque es involuntariamente cómica y resultaba agradable leer la combinación de idiomas que hace en gran parte del libro porque habla francés e inglés pero el español apenas y se le daba, así que hacía una combinación de los tres idiomas y era toda una tarea averiguar lo que quería decir. Un personaje admirable porque como seguro saben me gusto mucho leer personajes femeninos independientes y Annette lo es, no se da por vencida ante casi ningún obstáculo, ella busca la forma de salir de sus problemas con o sin ayuda y que supiera tanto sobre la historia de los alimentos sin duda un extra en la historia que permite aprender algo.
Pero... si! un pero en todo lo bueno del libro. Un personaje nefasto, de verdad odiosa al punto de decir: desaparece ¡YA!. Y esa es Carol, confieso que no me caía ni bien ni mal en un principio, pero es del tipo de personaje que quiere algo y no piensa en si el conseguirlo dañará a terceras personas, es convenenciera y para ella es sólo su autoridad y ya, así que simplemente la deteste, solo esperaba el momento en que dejará de ser mencionada porque la encontré realmente horrible en su forma de ser. Pero ese "pero" que le doy al libro por el personaje, no le resta lo buena que es la historia y al haber un personaje así, creo que la vuelven mucho más real porque no todo es completamente color de rosa. Y como en algún momento uno de los personajes dice que tendrán que estar atentos ante las amenazas, para no demostrar fragilidad y/o debilidad y superar esos obstáculos.
Sin duda lo recomiendo, como mencione antes me gusto mucho por el aspecto de la cocina, leía con atención cada que llegaba el momento de la descripción de lo que hacían o de los conocimientos de Annette sobre los diferentes ingredientes. Pero además de eso encontrarán una historia de segundas oportunidades, con personajes que no se dan por vencidos tan fácilmente, con el toque de romanticismo justo, que no es completamente blanca o negra o rosa! sino una historia con varios mensajes detrás, divertida y apegada a la realidad.

Книгата разказва за ресторанта "Старият свят" и сблъсъкът между странния, циничен и твърдоглав Алекс и добродушната, наивна и изобретателна Анет. В неволите си не са сами, заобиколени са от цяла компания колоритни приятели.
Интересно ми беше да разбера защо Алекс не готви с продукти от новия свят и къде ходи всеки понеделник, в почивния си ден. И защо Анет се озовава в "Старият свят" без пукната пара и място, където да живее. Но освен мистерията около миналото на героите, междувременно те се забъркват в нови каши и интриги, което допълнително ме интригуваше в процеса на четене.
Като оставим на страна лутанията на персонажите, романът изобилства от описания на най-различни ястия и продукти, описани стегнато и кратко в едно две изречения, като например кръмбълът ягоди ( понеже е сезонът на ягодите): "Най-много й харесва в крамбълите това, че може да оползотвори старият хляб - хлебните трохи, подсладени с малко кафява захар и гарнирани с масло се запичат, посипани върху карамелизираните ягоди". Личи си, че книгата е писана от шеф-готвач, в едно изречение са изредени всички съставки, плюс начина на приготвяне, само пропорциите и времето за печене липсват. Увлекателни ми бяха и историите на продуктите от новия свят, как доматите, картофите, фасулът и т.н. са достигнали до нашите трапези.
Една наистина вкусна книга, като цяло мога да кажа, че ми хареса.

Ревюто в Wanderbook
Ванилена сол" започна чудесно. Грабна ме още от съдържанието - започва с различни вкусове и чувства, а във втората си половина продължава с характерни храни от американския континент - домати, картофи, царевица. Преполових книгата на един дъх. Беше почти като да се гмурна в "Кухня" - може би не с толкова смешки, но с шеф, чийто пиперлив тон по нищо не отстъпваше на Виктор Баринов. Въпреки че понякога беше изключително груб, заобичах Алекс. На практика думите му бяха доста по-остри, но много по-безобидни (в сравнение с предния литературен грубиян, с когото се срещнах), и всъщност показваха, че е в по-добро състояние, отколкото когато замлъкне. Анет също не след дълго осъзна и свикна с това :) Квебекчанката беше от онези мили, спокойни, но силни героини, които много обичам. А химията между двамата герои беше чудесна - двамата се подчертаваха един друг, както добре подрбаните съставки на ястие.
И след като стигнахме до манджите :D Едно от любимите ми неща в книгата е, че почти всяко ястие, което приготвяха, може да бъде пресътворено. Съставките и стъпките са изброени (и много добре и безшевно вмъкнати в сюжета) и на читателя- готвач му трябва само малко съобразителност относно грамаж и време на готвене, което е напълно постижимо. Аз лично си харесах морковения пай на Анет - особено след огромния успех, който морковената торта с крем пожъна вкъщи, и гъбеното суфле на Алекс. Тези поне за начало. :D
Втората половина на книгата... не отговори съвсем на натрупания ентусиазъм от първата половина. Да уточня начина, по който аз си разполових книгата - втората част започва от изброяването на чуждоземните продукти, които Алекс в крайна сметка се видя принуден да опита и приеме. Тук и в самия сюжет настъпва обръщане, което като цяло приветствах и което промени динамиката между героите - Алекс и Анет смениха местата си на шеф и подчинен, промени се визията за ресторанта, задълбочи се един вид флирта между Анет и Карол, като тримата образуваха един доста странен любовен триъгълник.
Първо малко ми паднаха в очите с абзаците, посветени на екзотичните продукти. Не за друго, просто ми стояха една идея твърде изкуствено, за разлика от така хубаво вмъкнатите вкусотии от първата част. Но това бе изцяло бял кахър. Започнаха едни тайни планове и интриги, които на моменти също ми звучаха неестествено, но пак бяха нещо, с което можех да живея. Финалните глави на книгата бяха тези, които ѝ смъкнаха оценката в моите очи - забързан и неестествен финал, с много странни решения. Не ми хареса как завърши конфликтът на Алекс и Анет с Карол - след грандиозното ѝ разобличаване тя изчезна без следа от сцената, без да видим някаква лична среща между тях. Карол беше интересен герой, нестандартен "злодей" ако може да я наречем така, и заслужаваше финална поява. Миналото на Анет така и не се сля с основната линия - очаквах Карол да разбере за него, и да се опита да го ползва. Вместо това авторката бе решила да употреби тези елементи, за да разчупи стандартния хепи ендинг, и пак да е хепи, но по иначе.. Което по принцип е супер, но тук резултат беше... Мех. Последните глави за мен бяха едно абсурдно решение до друго, но ако тръгна да ги изброявам, ще сподел�� твърде много, макар и малки спойлери.
Въпреки развръзките, останах доволна от прочита си на "Ванилена сол". Нямах кой знае какви очаквания за нея - получих я с несполучлива книжна кутия - изненада, и я взех да я чета сега, защото отчаяно исках да завърша книжното си БИНГО, и ми трябваше роман с "храна или напитка". Първата половина на книгата беше разкошна - страстна, ароматна и вкусна и комбинираше храна, история и характери по перфектния начин. На втората ѝ липсваше малко баланс и нещата се стекоха доста различно от очакванията ми. Но ако сте в настроение за гурме новели и искате да почувствате кулинарния и романтичния темперамент на различни кътчета, то щипка "Ванилена сол" ще ви дойде идеално.

Карол беше интересен герой, нестандартен "злодей" ако може да я наречем така, и заслужаваше финална поява. Миналото на Анет така и не се сля с основната линия - очаквах Карол да разбере за него, и да се опита да го ползва. Вместо това авторката бе решила да употреби тези елементи, за да разчупи стандартния хепи ендинг, и пак да е хепи, но по иначе.. Което по принцип е супер, но тук резултат беше... Мех. Последните глави за мен бяха едно абсурдно решение до друго, но ако тръгна да ги изброявам, ще сподел�� твърде много, макар и малки спойлери.
Въпреки развръзките, останах доволна от прочита си на "Ванилена сол". Нямах кой знае какви очаквания за нея - получих я с несполучлива книжна кутия - изненада, и я взех да я чета сега, защото отчаяно исках да завърша книжното си БИНГО, и ми трябваше роман с "храна или напитка". Първата половина на книгата беше разкошна - страстна, ароматна и вкусна и комбинираше храна, история и характери по перфектния начин. На втората ѝ липсваше малко баланс и нещата се стекоха доста различно от очакванията ми. Но ако сте в настроение за гурме новели и искате да почувствате кулинарния и романтичния темперамент на различни кътчета, то щипка "Ванилена сол" ще ви дойде идеално.

Alex is chef patron at Antic Mon, a restaurant in Barcelona. Antic Mon is failing, whilst the neighbouring restaurants are thriving. Antic Mon is failing because of Alex. He's a fabulous, passionate, talented chef whose food is a triumph. He's also foul-mouthed, bad-tempered, angry and thinks that people should just come and eat. Alex can't be bothered with social media and being nice to people, and there is absolutely no way that he is going to use an ingredient that originates in America. So Alex loses the customers who want chips for their kids, or tomatoes in their salad.
Annette is not a chef, she only speaks very basic Catalan, but she's a foodie and she wants some experience. Alex and Annette find themselves working alongside each other in the kitchen of Antic Mon, and this working relationship becomes a journey of discovery for both of them.
Vanilla Salt is packed with luscious food, the descriptions of how each dish is created, and the wonderful ingredients are mouth watering. It is so obvious that the author is an accomplished Chef and is also a very skilful writer. She also excels at creating vibrant characters, with huge personalities who are perfectly formed; flawed but loveable, with some dialogue that is often hilarious, but also quite emotional in places.
I love a foodie novel, and I especially liked the modern feel to Vanilla Salt. Social media, especially blogging plays a huge part in this story.

Vanilla Salt follows the story of Annette and Alex, their past and their present, and their struggles to keep their restaurant afloat (but for different reasons!) The character of Alex is a typical chef (I should know, I’ve worked with lots as a hotel manager!) he is fiery, rude and arrogant. In stark contrast Annette is a shy Canadian who has decided to relocate to the Catalan region to start afresh.
Packed full of mouth-watering descriptions of recipes and methods, you can tell that Parellada knows her way around a kitchen and she too has clearly met her fair share of arrogant chefs! Alex refuses to have potatoes, tomatoes or anything remotely American in his kitchen, but throughout the book we are given little snippets of foodie history and origins from Annette.
Without giving too much away, Annette and Alex need to learn to overcome their differences if there is to be any hope of their restaurant being a success, and they battle temper tantrums, debt and an interfering journalist along the way. More than a few surprising relationships spring up throughout the book, some slightly less believable than others! Originally written in the author’s mother tongue this seems to be a pretty good interpretation as far as I can tell, even with the Canadian Annette’s odd grasp of Catalan!

¿Por qué demonios está escrito en 3ra persona en presente? Sinceramente escribir en ese estilo cuando es más que obvio que no lo merita me parece una de las cosas más pretenciosas de la vida.
Basada en la sinopsis yo esperaba un libro romántico lleno de clichés...pero no de esta manera. Se me hizo muy pesado terminarlo y eso que es súper corto. En fin, el libro es malo (y mucho más al principio) peeeero... me gustaron un par de frases/diálogos y la manera como empiezan los capítulos así que solo por eso 2★ :)

Era da tempo che non m'imbattevo in un libro così insopportabile. Personaggi antipatici, al limite del verosimile, situazioni assurde e dialoghi tirati per i capelli. Passabili le parti relative alla preparazione dei piatti, squallide le scene d'ammmmmore tra i protagonisti; le uniche cose che avrebbero potuto risollevare le sorti di questo libro sono state deplorevolmente rovinare dalla frettolosità dell'autrice.

Barely two stars - the only really interesting part is the history of certain food. The rest was predictable and boring. By far the most annoying person was Annette (Canadian), one of the main characters - why oh why did she have to speak the whole book in broken Catalan, which is translated into broken English?!? Maybe this style works in Catalan but definitely not in English and just got me worked up more page by page.

Amo i romanzi sulla cucina, anche quando hanno titoli ridicoli che non c'entrano nulla col titolo originale (che è "Vanilla Salt", per inciso, e che ha molto più senso), ma questo non ha fatto breccia nel mio cuore. Il protagonista è totalmente insopportabile, la protagonista è un po' una smidollata, ma si salva con le continue storie sull'arrivo in Europa degli alimenti di origine americana, i comprimari sono un po' più interessanti anche se non bastano a risollevare le sorti di questa storia.
Ammetto che avrei voluto che ci fosse qualche ricetta alla fine del libro, visto che la scrittrice è una chef apprezzata in patria e visto che molte delle ricette descritte sembravano piuttosto gustose.

It took me a while to get into this book. I found Annette’s pigeon Catalan frustrating and at times confusing. The linguistic style made it heavy going at times especially at the start. The plot developed slowly and it was frustrating though a bit obvious. As a foodie and one who loves food from the Iberian Peninsula I found the historical provenance of the food fascinating.

A Catalan Chef with gruff and eccentric personality meets a Canadian women who loves food like anything. Some dishes are broken, some revenge is cooked and served in the form of Vanilla Salt.
Ada Parellada is a well known Catalan chef around the world with a culinary show and few books to her name. Vanilla Salt is her debut to the fictional world, where she has mixed human emotions with food to tickle our taste buds as well as heart.
Vanilla Salt is about Alex who is struggling to keep up with upkeep of his restaurant, Antic Mon. Thanks to his gruff nature, rude attitude and eccentric personality, no one is willing to work with him. But now the debts are piling up and only solution left with Alex is to close down and then, Anette comes to rescue. A Canadian who loves food like anything takes up the job of helping him giving the old reputation to Antic Mon.
In between arguments and language barriers, Alex sees Anette's perspective that his resistance towards usage of ingredients that have culinary origins from America has made him loose his restaurant. Ignorance towards tomatoes and potatoes, social media and experimenting with food has made things difficult for Antic Mon. But with Anette, he is able to please his customers again. But their is only a slight problem of a famous food critic, Carol, who is creating a rift between two. A love triangle brewing between Catalan cuisine and some hidden stories from the past, Vanilla Salt is a light read for the soul.
Vanilla Salt is something which I can say lacks a bit of spices. A book that opens up at a great note, lacks a bit of twists and turns here and there. But since this is Ada Parellada's debut novel, one can also ignore such trivial things. The language of the book is easy to understand, as some of the readers assume that book might have a lot of Catalan. But it is nothing like that. As a debut writer, Ada's creativity seems promising. I for one is looking forward to her next fiction.
I loved the way Alex cooks his exquisite Catalan dishes, humming songs and engrossing himself in sauces. His stance on restaurant food being totally Catalan might seem rigid but is a little cute as well. Someone who doesn't want to lose his essence, Alex is a character that will take a place in your heart. I side by side googled all the dishes while reading the book and I must say, some of them made me drool a bit. The story line is easy to follow and will also crack you up at some places. But I was not fully satiated with Vanilla Salt. There were definitely some spices missing.
With a right mix of spices in form of love triangle and sugar in form of budding love between Alex and Anette, Vanilla Salt is something that you can indulge this summer for some light reading. But tread lightly..

Primero tengo que decir que no había leído algo como esto nunca antes tampoco quiero volver a leer algo así.
La sinopsis de este libro prometía muchísimo y estaba entusiasmada por leer un libro que estuviera lleno de sabores, de recetas, de cocina, de romance cliché e incluso de drama. Este libro tiene todo eso pero de una forma muy pesada y muy poco interesante. Los personajes son muy buenos y la trama es preciosa pero la forma en que esta escrito es decepcionante.
¿No les ha pasado que odian a un personaje cuando empiezan a leer el libro y mientras el libro se desarrolla empiezan a amarlo? Bueno me paso todo lo contrario con Alex; ame su carácter tosco y rústico desde un principio y el hecho de que haya cambiado su carácter no me podría molestar mas.
Juro que pase la mitad del libro deseando que lo hubieran escrito mejor, que lo hubiera editado mejor. Desee con todas mis fuerzas no haberlo empezado a leer y llegue al punto en que lo leía por obligación y no por gusto.

Toen ik de achterflap las, vond ik het een veelbelovend boek. Gelukkig maar want anders had ik het nooit gekocht en nu, na het lezen, heb ik er spijt van en dit om verschillende redenen.
Een van de hoofdpersonen, Annette, is Canadese die naar Spanje komt. Vaak wordt in het boek gezegd dat ze slecht Catalaans spreekt, wat begrijpelijk is en wat tot zijn recht zal komen als het boek in het Spaans gelezen wordt. Ik les het in het Engels en dan snap ik niet waarom ze gebroken Engels praat. De originele bedoeling gaat hier volledig verloren en werkt danig op je zenuwen.
Verder zitten er wel hier en daar leuke passages in en heb ik wel iets bijgeleerd over de geschiedenis van bepaalde voedingsmiddelen maar over het algemeen vond ik dat er verschillende dingen bij elkaar waren gegooid om tot iets te komen. Alleen viel dat iets nogal tegen.
De cover is echter wel mooi.
De schrijfstijl kon met ook niet echt bekoren en ben blij dat ik het boek kon dichtklappen.

Las 3 estrellas van porque es un lindo libro de cocina, me gusto la historia de los alimentos, conocer un poco de ciertos productos. La historia entre Alex y Annette fue un poco confusa, pero me gusto que al final se retiraran y disfrutaran de su amor y de su pequeña empresa.
ODIE ese pedazo entee Carol y Annette no me causo nada mas que disgusto.

Alex is a great chef, but a terrible restaurateur. His assistant and love interest is not much better, but does have an engaging personality. Ada Parellada is a great chef and a successful restaurateur. She is not a great novelist, but a lot happens to Alex in this book and it is fun to read.

Quite amusing with interesting bits and pieces about cooking. I liked how the characters' backgrounds were gradually exposed, giving clues as to why they were as they were. For people who like cooking and quirky romances.

A not-so-bad attempt at writing by Ada Parellada and a pretty decent representation of a chef's routine. Guess the vanilla salt in it was just a pinch too much.
