I am not much of a cook, and I wonder whether that is the reason it was not clear to me what are the ingredients in Mark Crick’s concoction. Is it the chicken, the mushrooms, the rice and potatoes, the garlic and tarragon, or the lamb and the cherries that he lists as needed for his conceivable mixtures? The Rösti, the Onion Tart, or the Rich Chocolate Cake, as well as the Clafoutis Grandmère, all seem edible recipes. Or is he stewing this array of menus out of writers of the stature of Mann, Chaucer, Greene, Steinbeck, Borges, Woolf, so that we could then say that his ingredients are the authors?

The array of recipes kept my mind and humour well fed. I only felt deprived when the limitations of my reading prevented me from savouring fully those dishes cooked in the language of an author I had not tasted before. I felt as if I liked the necessary enzymes to digest Welsh, Chandler and the Marquis de Sade. But even if I could not chew those with a full mouth and give my papillary glands their full recreation, I did not eschew those dishes and hope to find their gusto in the future.

My loss was compensated with the rich essences from Austen’s polite Tarragon Eggs, García Márquez’s cocky Coq au Vin, Kafka’s anguished Quick Miso Soup, Homer’s epic Fenkata, and Dickens’ Plum Pudding--although I would have preferred the Pork Pie from Great Expectations. Ah, and how could I forget! Proust’s gentle and delicate Tiramisu.

These were all well baked. The dough had risen and expanded to a perfect consistency and I devoured them with utter relish. Mmm…

But this culinary exercise made me think of the literary pastiche as practiced by giants like Proust and Joyce (and what a shame the latter was not given his own plate in this cookbook), and of the danger of reading a parody of a favourite author. The caricature can tint the original. For example, Calvino’s Moules Marinière is a raw recreation of the self-conscious play on the relationship of the theauthor&thetex&thereader and this may have altered my reading of any fresh Calvino. And I wonder if Pinter’s Cheese on Toast may now render his thoughtful dialogues too banal.

This is not a criticism of Crick’s abilities. For this was a delectable read, truly delicious. His success has just made me aware that to avoid dyspepsia, one has to take these delights in small doses.

Το βιβλίο θα μπορούσε να είναι ένα ιδανικό δώρο για κάποιον φίλο σας που του αρέσει η λογοτεχνία και η μαγειρική. Συνταγές εμπνευσμένες από το έργο κλασικών συγγραφέων. Η συνταγή παίζει το δικό της ρόλο στα κειμενάκια, αλλά αυτό που με εντυπωσίασε περισσότερο είναι ότι το ύφος κάθε κειμένου ήταν αντιπροσωπευτικό του ύφους του συγγραφέα.

Έτσι, για τον Όμηρο είχαμε ένα επικό ποίημα, όπου οι θεοί κοροϊδεύουν τους Έλληνες μέχρι να σκοτώσουν το κουνέλι, για τον Χάρολντ Πίντερ ένα θεατρικό, για τον Ρέιμοντ Τσάντλερ νουάρ, για τον Τσαρλς Ντίκενς μια Πουτίγκα Χριστουγέννων ανάμεικτη με τη Χριστουγεννιάτικη Ιστορία και τον Όλιβερ Τουίστ, ενώ για τον Ίρβιν Γουέλς είχαμε μια ιστορία με τύπους πολύ ... trainspotting! Το καλύτερο όλων - φυσικά - ήταν ο Μαρκήσιος ντε Σαντ που ένας καθωσπρέπει χορτοφάγος ετοιμάζει κοτοπουλάκια γεμιστά!!!

Νομίζω ότι η ιδέα είναι πολύ εμπνευσμένη και περισσότερο λειτουργεί (επιτυχημένα για μένα) ως μάθημα δημιουργικής γραφής με τη διαρκή εναλλαγή του ύφους, ενώ - όπως ξαναείπα - προσφέρεται ιδανικά για τους λάτρεις της λογοτεχνίας!

Παρεπιπτόντος εγώ ολοκλήρωσα σήμερα το βιβλίο ενώ άλλοι μαγείρευαν, αλλά... c' est la vie!!!!!

Καλή αναγνωστική χρονιά να έχουμε!!!

A cookbook where the recipes are written in the style of famous writers--roast lamb a la Raymond Chandler, coq au vin a la Gabriel Garcia Marquez, the title recipe, and so on. What could have been gimmicky and overbearing is actually funny and readable. Crick is better at imitating some styles than others (chocolate cake a la Irvine "Trainspotting" Welch is rich and satisfying; while scrambled eggs a la Jane Austen a bit overcooked) but generally he makes it all work. And no, I didn't try any of the recipes, but I assume they work.

Look, this book is just a stunt - a short tiny book one might see on the Barnes & Noble stocking stuffer table around the holidays - but don't let that make you think that it is not a masterpiece. Mark Crick takes 14 recipes and then turns each into a short piece in the style of a famous writer. His skill at mimicking the writer's style while incorporating the directions for the recipe into the narrative is nothing short of brilliant. If you love literature and love cooking, please order this book - it is a work of genius and will delight you fourteen times in a row.

PS - Any of my real life friends may just get this book in their stocking. For my GoodReads friends, sorry, you will have to seek out your own copy on Amazon.

Милейшее произведение, которое было поглощено за один завтрак и половину обеда. 14 коротких рассказов-стилизаций под метров литературы. Не ожидайте ничего великолепного, и получите милое времяпреповождение.

Нуарный барашек под укропным соусом, жирный шоколадный торт Ирвина Уэлша (ах, просто прелесть читать фи в рецензиях от нэжных барышень, что впервые увидели слово "блять" в книге. Посмотрите на него еще и в рецензии), нагнетающий ризотто от Стейнбека, цыплята де Сада, в которые так много входит и многое другое. Прелесть же. Ну серьезно, прелесть.

I was fascinated with the unusual format of this book, so I actually bought it (and I seldom do that). I think it takes a lot of talent to grasp the most important elements of different authors' writing styles and incorporate them into short receipt stories. Very unfortunately, of all the literary works imitated in this little book I only read "The Iliad" and an excerpt from Proust's "In Search of Lost Time". Perhaps that is the reason why I could connect with "The Iliad" remake easily and enjoyed it more than other receipts. I love how Crick makes fun of Greek Gods and makes Agamemnon and Achilles argue about who gets more meat! Crick really made this epic poem look light-hearted and funny.

Another funny story was the imitation of de Sade's "Justine". The beginning of this story is a short discourse on food ( the metaphors and epithets he uses in it are absolutely brilliant!) and then the author tells the story of Justine who barely managed to escape from the judge who intended to rape her. I applaud to Crick's ability to write this story so that without the obvious markers of 20th century (the van, the phone etc) it can totally seem that events are unfolding several centuries ago, judging by the writing style and the speech of the characters.
Also, I think I should mention that I read this book in Russian translation and it's obvious that they did an outstanding job conveying the text from English to Russian, especially when translating the last recipe, because it's pretty hard to make the words rhyme in a recipe and not omit anything important.
To Crick's credit he wrote receipts not only in prose, but also in a form of a poem and a play.
The minus of this book for me was that I have no interest in cooking anything other than pastry, so I didn't have much practical use for it. OK, I admit I made a cherry pie following one of the receipts, but that's all. I would have preferred if there were more desserts recipes in this book.
Speaking of desserts, there's a recipe of a chocolate cake in it and I was really surprised by the amount of swear words in it. I don't mind American swear words, but Russian ones kind of disgust me, so, unfortunately, this story was mostly ruined for me.
Among other stories that I didn't like were the Eggs a la Jane Austen and Coq au Vin a la Garcia Marquez (I found them rather dull).

Back to the positive stuff :
I also enjoyed the fish recipe a la Borjes which is a very interesting tale set in London during 2nd World War.
The recipe a la Kafka seems to convey the idea of absurdity and frailness of human's existence, it's dependence on other people, but Crick wrote it in a way that made me smile at certain points, really, Kafka and miso soup is a wierd combination.
Risotto a la Steibeck is a pretty good descriptive piece.

Overall, the writing style of this book resembles a chameleon, every story is different from the previous one and it might seem that it has been written by several different people. I would recommend this to people who like cooking and unusual stories.

Najzabavniji kuvar! Nisam neka kuvarica, ali ove recepte bih čak i ja probala.

Knjiga sadrži desetine recepata sa ilustracijama, a svaki je pisan u maniru različitih pisaca. Tu su Kafkini recepti u stilu ''Preobražaja'' i ''Procesa'', Stajnbekovi vrganji u stilu ''Plodova gneva'', Markiz de Sadov perverzni pristup voću i sočnom mesu.

Markesov je možda i najzabavniji jer u priči je ispovednik koji se trudi da obezbedi osuđeniku poslednju večeru pred sutrašnje pogubljenje, a osuđenik, bivši kuvar, tražio je pevca u vinu koji se marinira dugo da bi pogubljenje moralo da se odloži :)

''Kad će jelo biti gotovo?'', upita on.
''Marinada mora da radi četrdeset osam sati'', odgovori Tobaga.
''Zar ne može kraće?''
Ona ga pogleda očima u obliku zlatnih badema. ''Za ovakvu ptičurinu?''
I on je znao da ne može.

Svaka čast prevodiocu koji je prilagodio tekst svim stilovima!

This is not Campbell's ready-made soup but is sort of interesting. Mark's been cookin' some heavy s**t 2005 and if you ask me it was not pro analysi especially in terms of a la De Sade's paultry featuring butcher's daughter Justine captured in the basement while chef stuffed grill chickens with plum sauce sewing them afterwards with needle and a thread. Not so sexually inviting romancing of a lifetime in terms of scoring some over brunch. Anyways, did some Lactovo Vegetarian collage featuring Lactovo Vegetarian ingredients from Kafka's Soup featuring Modjo's Soup For One abruptly hard-core housed by Van Helden...

The book jacket calls Mark Crick a literary ventriloquist, and if that is a new genre, then he's a master of the art. This is a nice little confection, to be enjoyed in delectable little bites, one at a time. (Sorry, I couldn't resist.) If you like to cook and you like to read, as I do, this is fun to dip into. I'm even tempted to try a couple of these recipes, just to see how they turn out. Maybe Cherry Clafoutis Ala Virginia Woolf. Or the John Steinbeck version of Mushroom Risotto. Even Marcel Proust has a go at Tiramisu, and of course, it's the longest piece in the book.

Negaidītākais ir tas, ka izlasot šo 14 recepšu grāmatu, bez gaidām ieraudzīt kādu pagatavojamu recepti, bet iegūt tikai literāru baudījumu, ieguvu gan pāris receptīšu un arī baudu lasīt.

Olas ar estragonu/ Džeinas Ostinas gaumē

"-Franču estragons ir aristokrāts garšaugu vidū, un, kaut arī man tas šķiet pārāk labs tavām olām, nenoliegšu, ka viņām tā būtu spoža partija,- sacīja lēdija Kamberlenda."

Toute une série de recette écrites suivant le style de différents auteurs.

Le principe est rigolo, le résutat l'est aussi pas mal.
Je ne sais pas si je reconnais vraiment le style des auteurs dans les recettes (en tout cas pour les auteurs que j'ai déjà lus), mais la succession des styles, bien différents les uns des autres, de chaque recette, chacune complétée par une illustration, également "à la façon de", m'a vraiment bien plu!
En plus les recettes sont tentantes, ce qui n'est pas le moindre défaut de ce livre...

Um livro saborosamente criativo. Receitas aparentemente deliciosas, embaladas em um continho curto, com estilos literários similares a escritores famosos, e seu modo de preparo.

Весела и забавна книжка! Това е първото което ми идва наум, щом се сетя за "Супата на Кафка". Марк Крик е известен британски фотограф, който помежду другото е и автор.
За какво става въпрос. Авторът ни е предложил 14 готварски рецепти (повечето от които супер завъртяни), всяка една от които е представена като кратък разказ в стила на различен световноизвестен писател. Чудна идея! Мога само да поздравя Марк Крик - според мен е успял да хване точния стил на всеки един от тях. Освен това, постигнал е много повече - представил е нещо така скучновато на пръв поглед като рецепти за готвене от друг, интересен и забавен ъгъл.
Какви са рецептите ли?
Моля, представям ви ги с кратка демонстрация:

1. Агнешко в сос от копър ала Реймънд Чандлър - "Нуждаех се от маса за двама в "Максим", стотачка в джоба и разкошна блондинка. Разполагах с агнешко бутче и никаква улика."
2. Яйца с естрагон ала Джейн Остин - "Френският естрагон е аристократ сред подправките и макар според мен да е прекалено добър за яйцата ти не мога да отрека, че добре ще се съчетае с тях."
3. Бърза японска супа ала Франц Кафка - "Сега гостите поглеждаха към него сякаш бе подчинен, чиято нескопосност бави вечерята им."
4. Шоколадова торта ала Ървин Уелш - "Мера брашното, ама като глеам, браче, таа планина бел прах, чесно ти каам, на косам съм да забиа нос вътре, бал съм го."
5. Тирамису ала Марсел Пруст - "Невидими за останалите, ние се заприказвахме; скрит зад хризантемите и съзнаващ, че никой няма да види колко глупаво изглеждам, аз събрах кураж, решен да я помоля да стане моя жена още тогава, на мига, но когато отворих уста да проговоря, тя нежно напъха в устата ми лъжичка от възхитителния крем и аз онемях."
6. Петел във винена марината ала Габриел Гарсия Маркес - "Отец Антонио дел Сакрамент дел Алтар Кастанеда седеше в градината и наблюдаваше как следобедът си умира."
7. Ризото с гъби ала Джон Стайнбек - "Онова, което доскоро приличаше на купичка дървени кори бе придобило наситения цвят на задушено месо; виненокафявите багри на напоена с влага почва бяха заменили сухата като мазилка аризонска зе��я."
8. Пълнени обезкостени пилета ала Маркиз дьо Сад - "Тогава взе игла и конец, заши отверстията им и с потупвания върна на жестоко обезобразените им телца предишната форма."
9. Черешов сладкиш "клафути" ала Вирджиния Улф - "Много спокойно прибави едно яйце: та нали бе потомка на онзи отколешен род френски благородници, които поколения наред по женска линия внасяха своето изкуство и енергия, своя усет за цвят и форма, интелект и достойнство в мудна Англия?"
10. Задушен заек "фенката" ала Омир - "Когато зората розовопръста, родена от здрача погалила хоризонта, Одисей се надигнал от постелята си и метнал лъка си връз рамо."
11. Пиле по виетнамски ала Греъм Грийн - "Ритуалистично нарязах гърдите на тънки ленти. Бялата плът лежеше в чинията като накълцан договор и аз побързах да я изсипя в маринатата."
12. Морски език по нормандски ала Хорхе Луис Борхес - "Той отцедил мидите и отново ги залял със сладка вода, тъй чужда на природата им, и изхвърлил като негодни онези, които отказвали да се затворят при почукване."
13. Печен сандвич със сирене ала Харолд Пинтър - "Хърли. (Поглежда в хладилника.) Можеш да ползваш телефона. Защо не се обадиш на дъщеря си? Клак. По това време? Късно е, ще й се обадя утре. Бездруго тази вечер няма да иска да дойде, започва работа много рано."
14. Лучена тарта ала Джефри Чосър - "На набрашнен плот тънка кора разточете, поръсете с мащерка и в дълбока тава разстелете, по ръба с ножа я оформете и в този ред, докато изпръхне я печете на газ степен пет."

Дотука бяха плюсовете. Идва ред на минусът - за тия габарити на книгата цената й е височка. Въпреки десетината цветни илюстрации.

Бих искал да видя на български и другата подобна книга на Крик - Sartre's Sink.

Witty pastiches of Crick's choice of literary greats which list ingredients and, read with due attention, are functional recipes. Get into the kitchen with Raymond Chandler, Jane Austen, Franz Kafka, Irvine Welsh, Marcel Proust, Gabriel Garcia Marquez, John Steinbeck, the Marquis de Sade, Virginia Woolf, Homer, Graham Greene, Jorge Luis Borges, Harold Pinter and Geoffrey Chaucer.

Here's a taste, from Lamb With a Dill Sauce à la Raymond Chandler

I needed a table at Maxim's, a hundred bucks, and a gorgeous blonde; what I had was a leg of lamb and no clues. I took hold of the joint. It felt cold and damp, like a coroner's handshake. I took out a knife and cut the lamb into pieces. Feeling the blade in my hand I sliced an onion, and before I knew what I was doing a carrot lay in pieces on the slab. None of them moved.

The Canadian-American impressionist and comedian Rich Little was known as "The Man of the Thousand Voices" for his remarkably ability to impersonate the sound and manner of celebrities. Perhaps even more difficult is the ability to reproduce the writing style and "voice" of well-known authors. This latter sort of mimicry is the premise of Mark Crick's first book "Kafka's Soup." What if fourteen famous authors had each written a recipe in their characteristic style? The recipes (which are real) include cheese on toast set in a scene from a play by Harold Pinter, clafoutis by Virginia Woolf, an onion tart by Geoffrey Chaucer, rabbit stew by Homer, and my favourite: lamb with dill sauce by Raymond Chandler. Each recipe is illustrated by a painting (by Crick) in the style of a famous artist, e.g. Hogarth, Egon Schiele, Picasso, Matisse and Andy Warhol. The little book is highly entertaining and more so, the more one is familiar with the style of each of the authors mimicked. The book suggests itself as a gift book, which in my case is how I came upon it, for which I sincerely thank the giver.

I love the underlying concept of this book--a sampler of fourteen literary and culinary pairings. Each recipe is cleverly woven into a short essay, play or poem, written in the style of a particular author (e.g. "Quick Miso Soup a la Franz Kafka"). I am fairly confident that I have successfully deciphered the basic recipe instructions; however as a novice in the kitchen (to put it nicely), I think I would find it difficult to execute many of them properly. Perhaps I will try one of the simpler examples first: "Tarragon Eggs a la Jane Austen," "Clafoutis Grandmere a la Virginia Woolf," or "Cheese on Toast a la Harold Pinter." One thing's for sure--I need to beef-up my exposure to twentieth-century, European literature (which dominates this book in terms of featured authors), and so I've been inspired to add several selections to my "to read" list. I may acquire a taste for certain new writers, if not their namesake recipes.

What a clever book. Crick, a "literary ventriloquist," proffers 14 recipes, each written in the style of a major author. "The porcini lay dry and wrinkled, each slice twisted by thirst and the color of parched earth"...Steinbeck. "It is a truth universally acknowledged that eggs, kept for too long, go off. The eggs of Oakley Farm had only recently been settled in the kitchen at Somercote, but already Mrs B--- was planning a meal..."...Austen. And so on. Not all are spot on, but most are, making for an utterly delightful read.

Pikkuhauskaa ja paikoin ihan näppärää tekstiä, jonka ideana on kirjoittaa reseptejä maailmankirjallisuuden klassikoiden tyyleillä. Paikoin kirja osuu maaliin, mutta ei tästä silti oikein ole kunnon lukukokemukseksi eikä liioin reseptikirjaksi. Sain tämän itse synttärilahjaksi ja onhan se joskus ollut mielessä, että tekisin jonkun kirjan resepteistä kuten kirjassa on kuvattu. Uskaltaako joku tarjoutua kokeilemaan millaista olisi syödä kanssani lammasta Raymond Chandlerin tyyliin?

This is a very strange book! This was given to me by my family for Mother's Day. Fourteen recipes for various dishes, written in the form of various authors. It helps to have read the authors' real works. The book lost its charm for me after the second story. And I doubt I'll ever try out any of the recipes, though there were one or two that looked interesting.

The concept could have been taken farther and been better organized – either by genre or course, but still, I laughed really hard at the execution of the idea of famous authors writing recipes / stories. Raymond Chandler and Virginia Wolf were my favorite, both recipes spending a wonderful time lingering over the descriptions of the ingredients and the chief.

This book took me an hour to read. Literally (get it, literally? Ha!). It was a fair book to read on a summer-y afternoon because I'm a) a food lover and b) a book lover. If you're neither of these things, don't bother. If you are both, expect a light, trite bit of fun.

Mark Crick "Büyük yazarlar aşçı olsaydı?" sorusundan hareketle yazdığı bu kitapta bize 14 tarif sunuyor.Çıkış noktasını çok beğendiğim bu kitaptaki favorim ise Marquez usulü "Coq au Vin".Biraz daha uzun sürmesini istemekle birlikte oldukça keyifli okuma sunduğu da bir gerçek.

Faites attention, car en refermant ce livre, j’étais au bord de l’indigestion 😉 Et pourtant, quel régal que ce buffet bien garni ^_^

Au menu, différents mets préparés par de grands noms de la littérature. Nous passons de Jane Austen au Marquis de Sade, de Marcel Proust à Virginia Woolf, et tant d’autres.

L’auteur nous donne ici un livre totalement décalé, totalement différent de tout ce que j’ai déjà pu lire. Il rentre dans la peau de chacun des « personnages » et nous présente ses recettes comme si c’était eux et non lui qui les écrivaient, avec chaque fois le style de la personne concernée.

Ce qui est bien également, c’est que toutes les recettes sont réalisables une fois que l’on décortique et que l’on en retire le côté histoire, il reste bel et bien une recette que nous avons la possibilité de réaliser.

La petite touche qui m’a fait bien rire, c’est le fait que sur la couverture intérieure, en debut de livre, vous trouvez des petits commentaires des personnages concernés sur le livre.

Exemple :
Raymond Chandler » Ca m’est resté en travers de la gorge.

Vous l’aurez compris, j’ai franchement aimé ce moment hilarant de lecture. Un livre anti-morosité ave effet garanti.

I spent an enjoyable morning reading this little book. Have you every wondered what Raymond Chandler or Graham Greene might cook for you, if they were to invite you to dinner? Or what Virginia Woolf might serve guests at an afternoon tea? Well wonder no more!
Fourteen short stories based around fourteen famous authors and recipes. My favourite was "Coq a Vin, a la Gabriel Garcia Marquez" where a fighting cock "El Jaguarcito" (The little Jaguar) is sacrificed as the last supper of a condemned man. The "Rich Chocolate Cake, a la Irvine Welsh" sounds kinda delicious from the recipe with Port in the mixture and Kahlua in the icing.
I felt some of the authors could have tried a little harder. Come on, Jane Austen, Tarragon Eggs is just a fancy name for scrambled eggs and Kafta's Quick Miso Soup is more a meal for one, when you have nothing in the fridge.

This was a fun little book, Kafka's Soup has 14 recipes but in literature form from all over the world, and told in the style of famous writers. So if you like classic literature and cooking this is a win win, for example, a miso soup from Kafka, a lamb roast in the moody noir style of Raymond Chandler, a chocolate cake in the style of Trainspotting from Irvine, with lots of alcohol and told from a junkie perspective, and eggs ala Jane Austen and many more, this was a really fun and short read and the recipes really look good, will definitively make some.
