William and Kate, who are known as the Earl and Countess of Strathearn in Scotland, officially opened the V&A Dundee. Kate looked stunning in an Alexander McQueen tartan coat which she teamed with a small green bag. The royal couple were met by V&A Dundee director Philip Long before entering the museum for a tour.

The duchess - who is patron of the V&A - delivered a speech to celebrate the new museum, which opened to the public last September.

She said: “Last February, I was delighted to be asked to be the V&A's Patron.

“Now, nearly a year later, I’m thrilled to be standing in a brand new V&A, one which has been built for the city of Dundee and for Scotland.”

It is the first V&A museum anywhere in the world outside London.

The £80 million building was designed by Japanese architect Kengo Kuma on the banks of the River Tay.

It is the centrepiece of an ongoing £1 billion regeneration of Dundee's waterfront and is already bringing economic and social benefits to the area.

Mr Long said: "V&A Dundee is an ambitious new international museum and we are honoured that the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge today declared the museum officially open.

"V&A Dundee is at the heart of Dundee's transforming waterfront and is a key part of the city's plans for an exciting future.

"Within our remarkable building, designed by Kengo Kuma, we are proud to host world-class permanent galleries and remarkable exhibitions that have already delighted and inspired hundreds of thousands of people."

Kate and William also greeted crowds of well-wishers on the waterfront who gathered to catch a glimpse of the pair.

They went on to meet employees and their families from tyre factory Michelin, which is to cease production next year, to hear how the closure is affecting them.

William and Kate also attended a meeting of the Michelin Action Group, which is working to repurpose the site and provide new employment opportunities for the area.

The royal couple last visited Dundee in 2015.
