I attended an event featuring Amouage's Secret Garden perfumes and they had the older iteration (in the glossy, beautiful lilac-coloured bottole) and the newer version (in the matte, burgundy bottle) placed next to each other, so I had a chance to test them both side by side and on skin. Both are incredibly long-lasting and smell roughly the same if you don't think too much about it, but I definitely preferred the packaging of the older bottle and decided to get a full bottle of it.

The fragrance is a beautiful bouquet of spring flowers, dominated by almondy heliotropes and sprinkled with a smattering of cocoa powder. There's also the unmistakeable whiff of Amouage's smokiness which gives it an interesting edge over other purple flower perfumes which tend toward a more candied profile. Cheerful without being boisterous, elegant without arrogance, this perfume is an classy wear for day events and a cosy wear for night events.

It's nice just not buy worthy

Tammyrobins7

@Scouthome, thank you for your knowledge about this, I'm going to watch Sebastian's review now. Sounds like it's still nice, but as you said the original is better, so it's sad to have lost it.

JrossiLeFleur

This is an absolute powder beast. I’ve only tried this one and Guidance from Amouge. The punch that these both provide is like hitting a nail with a sledgehammer. There’s beast mode, and then there’s BEAST MODE 👹. This is the latter. I sprayed maybe 3 different perfumes on tester strips in my room and Lilac Love snuffed out all the others like atomic powder bomb. I can’t smell anything but this and I didn’t even spray it on my body. Just two little spritzes on a piece of paper. Not a safe blind buy at all. Another thing this one has that i can’t get along with are there are powder notes, which to me are soft and ethereal, and then there are sour powder notes I get in some perfumes. Sour powder reminds me of when my babies were little and I had to change their diapers. It’s a smell that’s not necessarily horrible but it’s associated with an unpleasant task so it’s a big massive no for me. I don’t want to smell like a baby’s lil butt however cute and precious and innocent they are. 😂🙅🏼♀️

Scouthome

To answer @Tammyrobins7 it has changed a little according to Sebastian, the perfume guy on YouTube who has been a huge fan of the old version and has several times ranked it among his favourites from Amouage. He says he still recognises it as the same fragrance but that he as he knows the original so well can easily detect there has been some form of re-formulation. The main difference however is that the old one is more powdery while the newer version is toned down a bit in the powdery department and therefore according to him a bit more smooth and creamy like a polished wood version of the original.
Longevity is according to him pretty much the same though, so he does not deem it to be watered down. And he said that he even though he could detect a small but to him distinct difference he still felt that he could recommend the new version as well.
Hope that helps some for those who wonder… Personally I really really love the powdery ness of the old version, so I would choose to sniff before I would buy the new one…❣️

Tammyrobins7

The new bottle is awful 😖 Has the scent changed?

lavendermoon

The opening was very pretty but unfortunately dried down to a very powdery scent. My mom said this smelled like “talco” or baby powder and I agree to be honest. It’s very reminiscent to baby powder. Not for me :(

NoseMemory

I just tested the new version on a strip two days a go, and began a quest to hunt down a bottle at a decent price. I fell so hard for it, it gave me goosebumps, needless to say I couldn't stop thinking about it ❤️. Managed to find a 100 ml at a decent price, picked it up today and to my surprise it was an older bottle, with the old package, batch 2019. It's hard to compare since I only tested the new one from a blotter, but maaaan, am I a happy girl right now. Also sprayed the older version on a blotter, to try and give it a more fair comparison...and I think the older one is slightly more gourmand, but pretty similar. Can't comment on performance comparison, but the bottle I have, has super potent juice for sure. I' ve seen discussions about juice color and the fact that it's related to whatever it was made in Oman or UK, mine is made in UK and has an orangey colored juice.
So..back to the smell, I don't understand how others don't get lilac from it, I get fresh lilac and unsweetened milky cocoa, never thought about these two going together, let alone going together so damn beautifully. Slightly powdery but still fresh, dense but airy, it's hard to explain, it's truly an experience.
I hope the performance on the newer version is at least the same, I wouldn't worry too much otherwise. If the notes sound right to you, you'll be very happy with either.

Olenchyk

Amouage fragrances are not your modern light crowd pleasers. All I have tried, and this one is no exception are dense, sweet, heavy, very feminine and quite retro. We had a few lilac bushes in our garden when I was a kid and I felt like a kid in our garden in May...
Strong blossomy/flowery opening and sweet powdery drydown. Pretty but not for me.

Bijousmere

Sweet smoker... Decent enough floral but mixed with cigarette smoke , something smoky in there ...

Ferra_Verto

Powder explored through various facets; powdery floral opening with the heliotrope & lilac notes, becomes a dark cocoa-powder forward scent that feels vaguely playdoh-like thanks to the powdery orris.
There's a nice undercurrent of powdery vanilla too, keeps it gourmand-ish and likeable.
I'd steer clear of this if you don't like powdery notes in any aspect.
Perfect for spring or autumn, can't be too hot or cold.
Arms' length projection, lasts for an 8 hr day.

Ayshin

The opening is powdery floral and dried down to mix of floral and gourmand, not overpowering. Just balanced and right
I don't get other reviewers because the Longevity is shyyyyyytttt on me
I regret paying $300 for a fragrance that last only 2-3 hour on me ;(

Lourdes.mansour

Amazing, but unfortunately too powdery for my taste, definitely for older audience, on my mother it smells amazing, on me it makes me feel old and does not suit me

flyprincess

One of my very favorite fragrances ever — it is stunningly beautiful, sexy, and sillage for days. It’s like purple chocolate powdered florals. It has a similarity to Midnight poisson, tho the notes are different - it doesn’t smell the same but it’s a similar idea. However… If you’re looking for a photorealistic lilac, this isn’t the one — (I would suggest Lilac A Day by Vilehelm instead.).

Goldena35

Very heady floral and very powdery and I am missing the lilac. I think possibly that a lilac and lily of the valley combo might make the lilac stand out more. No actual clue …just a wild guess. I do get the idea of lilac (especially in the opening) so I guess wanting the photo realistic version is my own personal issue. This is pretty but a bit too “perfumey” for my taste. I am glad that the Peony didn’t take over. Not one of my favorite floral notes when in the leading role. Definitely some creaminess with that powder. I think that if you name a perfume Lilac Love it should have a predominant lilac note. That’s about where I am at with this…
Performance is in line with the brand. Oh and I completely agree with @hazrit comment below …this totally reminds me of Chanel No 5 when first applied. And shame on them for ruining that gorgeous bottle with the recent change of color.

jyumisong

I think I'm giving up on purple florals (except iris). This is probably the fourth or fifth with violet/lilac/heliotrope dominant fragrance that I've tried that's a fail. I wish the cocoa stuck around longer on my skin, but, unfortunately, I just get heaps of florals. Very powdery and vintage-y with a modern twist. Not too sweet either. I opted for Love Tuberose over this for my FB.

Roaming_Okie

Deep in a seasonal depression haze, I decide the perfect lilac perfume will solve all my problems, so I order a handful of different lilac perfume samples.
I apply Lilac Love and it's meh, soft lilac, a bit of chocolate and a vague playdough note, but about an hour later i'm going about my day and realize im relaxed as hell. Oh no did I take a weed gummy instead of my vitamin gummy yet again? No the perfume has dried down to the most amazing powdery creamy comforting scent. It reminds me of bedtime as a kid somehow. Now I have to come up with $300 for a bottle :(

alternateu

More like a sweet cocoa powder and vanilla, with a nod to lilac in the base. The lilac for me only comes out in the opening, then it dries down to a generic, thin, gourmand. Also, very soft projection by Amouage standards (which is actually quite ok) but I find the longevity poor also, which makes this overall a little disappointing.

diluted paintbox

Powdery floral it is. With a twist.
I didn't like this one for a long time, but then I've found it again and fell in love. I have a 100ml bottle and use it very frequently. It is really sharp at first, I always have to sneeze first thing after applying it. But after 15mins the sharpness gives room for such an amazing powdery heaven.

You can throw away all your violet-based powdery perfumes (which all smell quite the same) and get this. Don't let the first impression fool you. This is complex, I think that cocoa-tonka-orris combo beneath all the classic bright flowers does the trick. I couldn't say that I can actually detect any of them separately, but they sure do their job and turn this perfume from broken glass to pastel lilac with warmth underneath.

I used to underrate this house, thought that these are just overpriced cloying branded perfumes with no real imagination. But now I see that their juices are real performances with a lot of layers.

komail

Velvety smooth unsweetened cocoa powder. This is an absolute hidden gem. I like how they utilize the chocolate note alongside the powdered floral heart. Absolutely heavenly. I ignored this perfume for so long as it was feminine targeted and I assumed from the note breakdown that it would be something realy overpowering and super sweet. I was absolutely wrong. This is 10/10 perfume. It has the wow factor. It is sexy without being vulgar. I love the floral heart made of lialac and heliotropes which are the most dominant flowers. The rose and jasmine are there but they play like backing vocalists. The tonka smells properly almondy and bitter like a real tonka should smell. The longevity and sillage are very good as expected from Amouage. Absolutely happy that I tried this. I overlooked it after trying the rest if the garden collection that did not impress me much.

daffodilsandcoffee

When companies make asinine decisions like changing a bottle design, it has to come down to cost or operational implications. Maybe they're replacing all the shiny, smooth bottles for the textured ones? Either way, the old color was a perfect match for the juice.

Speaking of the juice, it's a potent powdery floral. A bit old fashioned and mature, yet also lovely and timeless. It always makes me want to sneeze initially but I'm also an oversprayer. Reminds me of Mother's Day, tea parties, and spring.

THE BEST Lilac perfume ever! Nothing, I repeat nothing even comes close!
It’s in the same family as Mon Gurlain Intense (not a dupe) now imagine if MGI had a Lilac verion without Lavender, and added loads of Cacao…
If you like Mon Intense, Dama Bianca, Viktoria Minya Eau De Hongrie you will like LL. All of them are florals but sweet and ultra feminine. But they’re all different!
Mon Intense is rose/iris/Vanilla
Dama Bianca Violet/Iris/Vanilla
Eau De Hongrie Jasmin/Honey
Lilac Love Lilac/Heliotrope/Cacao/Vanilla
It’s a sweet creamy dreamy, chocolaty floral heaven!

LEM922

Imagine my shock when I look at my shelf and see this ugly ass bottle on there omg…

Minzynguyen

OMG Amouage! Please change it back to LILAC color bottle! This diminishes my joyful experience with this fragrance :(. This might sound silly but the beauty of the lilac color bottle is part of the experience. Why changes it?

hazrit

real-life lilacs are my favorite thing to smell in the world, and I sought lilac-centric perfumes when I first started sampling. i was disappointed initially at how little lilac this conveys, and I never came back to it. i didn't understand the other notes and didn't enjoy the composition at all. Now I sprayed my sample again, and at first spray I was reminded very strongly of chanel no.5! there are several notes in common, but i'm not sure what element is really giving that for me- it's the general powder that hits my nose as I walk around. On my skin, I can smell the florals in shifting nuances, and sometimes i do get a strong hit of lilac, which I love. On my clothes, i get the cocoa element; a very light and sweet chocolate. overall, seems mature- something I would have smelled on an elegant older lady when I was a child. very interesting scent but would not buy a full bottle.

whoaboy

The combination of lilac and heliotrope is beautiful--especially the lilac. Sadly, they are drowned out by an overwhelming vanilla/tonka bean soup (on me, at least), especially at close sniff. Interestingly, the cacao pod, which so many have voted the top scent is just a minor player for me. I prefer En Passant for lilac realism but this is still a very pretty scent.

natak2

Oh nooo this new packaging is truly horrendous, why oh why would they do this

MyScentBubble

I've never smelled this or anything but isn't this also known and popular because of its beautiful shiny lilac bottle? Why would they change it? What are they actually thinking? Strange

Olgita

I agree with those who like the older bottle better. The new bottle feels rubbery rather than velvety and more Montal rather than Amouage. The older color also matches the juice inside much more. The new color is more grapes rather than lilacs. I have not smelled the new juice, but I hope that it is not reformulated as I really like the older one. Thinking of getting a back up bottle. Hhhhmmm……..

Neckromancer

I actually love the packaging color

Aquapinkmoon

Ewww what’s this packaging

perfume_angel

Ummm I’m sure we can all agree that the old packaging was so gorgeous! Why fix something that isn’t broken? How did amouage approve of changing the gorgeous designs to ugly ones I don’t understand😂

MagdalenaM07

What is this ugly new packaging omg? The other color represented the fragrance so well rip

Smeraldina77

I have two samples of this one. I am not very sure about it.... I like it on one side, but on the other it seems a bit too artificial and soapy to my nose. The most prominent notes to me are heliotrope, gardenia, lilac and sandalwood. Lilac, gardenia and sandalwood make it quite creamy, while heliotrope, tonka and cocoa are probably those notes which gives it a powdery quality, although, I can't really distinguish them. I smell also something a bit pungent. It is definitely interesting, but I am not sure if I like it or if I don't care for it (I can't say I dislike it). I will finish my samples and see if my impression will change.

nellyrlight

This is my fourth Amouage and the most impressive to my nose..I'm crazy about lilacs and heliotrope and those two are very dominant in this bottle. As a 30+ year collector, I'm most intrigued to get all the rest! The entire product is made with love and great attention to detail from packaging to bottle and the content is just superb quality! p.s. @fragrantica @admin please do undo what your system may have done with my phone access to your site. I can no longer search anything there. My computer is fine. I did call you twice and received no response. Tks.

Aquapinkmoon

Gorgeous gorgeous gorgeous perfume! The bottle is so beautiful but the fragrance is even better, lilac coloured flowers and cocoa! Powdered chocolate scent with light florals, vanilla comes forward in the base. Very yummy and perfect for every day but I think would shine in winter. I will say, this smells very similar to Vera wang princess! Another fragrance that I absolutely adore, they are not dupes but have enough similarity’s, if you really like this but can’t afford the price definitely try princess, the drydowns are very similar:)

Mama07mia12

My order arrived today for this perfume, which I had tried on my skin before and loved.
My impression is that it is quite strong and durable. I smell mostly cocoa and hyacinth.

mrsz.o-o

I found this one to be all over the place. A harsh, very green tobacco scent greeted me and stayed for the first 10 minutes, after that a powdery-jasmine scent kicked in. I really didn't get much lilac in this!

I found the performance to be very disappointing, lasted about 3hrs on my skin. It's nice enough but I won't be buying a full bottle of this.

Suitable for winter/early spring. I can imagine this being cloying in warmer weather.

neonaya

I can’t believe there are people who didn’t like this perfume! It’s gorgeous combination of lilac and chocolate. Perfectly balanced. In hot weather it gives more flowers while during cold weather it turns more gourmand. At the same time I don’t think that I’ll buy whole bottle. 10ml for occasional use is quite enough ☺️

Msala140

A fresh heliotrope comes on very strong on the opening along with a cool powder. Then the florals starts to mingle with some fresh sweet cacao powder that feels very milky to me . After 6 hours or so it becomes into a very beautiful vanilla like almost sweet condensed milk with some soft sandalwood . I don’t really notice the patchouli. I would totally wear this all year round in FL, but just ensure I don’t overspray above 80° weather . It’s stays more intimate on my skin

stella.cherie

I'm surprised tobacco isn't a note in this fragrance since this was incredibly smoky and masculine on me. There is a note in here that does not mix well with my chemistry that I have not yet identified. The skin scent is feminine and pleasant, but I just can't get past the first few hours.

Staysmellinggood

Every time I wear this I get a compliment. This stuff projects. I think I over sprayed once and offended a lady at the doctors office but I my doctor loved the fragrance. Layers great too.

mellie999

For the asking price, this perfume should last way longer than it does. 4 hours tops, and that's being generous. After the first half hour, the lovely lilac dried into a shrill powdery soap smell, and after 2 hours, it was nothing more than a soapy body spray that I could only smell when actively lifting my wrist to my nose. I wanted to like this so badly, but it was a letdown.

Pilikins

I think this is my favourite Amouage perfume. On first spray it smells like soapy chocolate- I know that sounds strange but think Lush chocolate soaps. However the soapy effect soon wears off and the amazing lilac accord come through- pretty realistic with the slightly powdery heliotrope. But what makes this perfume unique is the cocoa- it smells like Mexican chocolate to me- deep and not sweet. It adds depth and takes this well away from flower garden or talcum powder land. It is almost like a gourmand but not quite because it isn’t very sweet. In fact there is no simile I can think of for it . Just try it- it’s amazing. I’d say it’s unisex and sillage and longevity are great.

Nessers

Lilac accord was used because lilac cannot be extracted naturally in a fragrance. I didn't know that until I researched it this morning. That's the quality of Amouage. Lilac Love is my second favorite from the Secret Garden collection, sometimes my number one depending on the day. Tuberose is my favorite but it honestly depends on what mood I’m in. Lilac is a great alternative for people who say they don’t like sweet fragrances. This has great balance between fresh air with floral notes and natural sweet elements. It's not juvenile and does not smell like a dessert. It's perfect for someone who wants to be soft and feminine without giving up elegance and intrigue. It will still prompt attention which is another unsaid concern we subconsciously think about. We pay $400 for a fragrance so we stand out, to attract attention and stir memories that evoke feelings. There aren't any memories that this fragrance brings back, but it smells great and is unique enough to warrant a purchase.

LEM922

I blind bought this. Why? Because I’m insane. But I’m SOOOO glad that I did. This is INCREDIBLE. I love powdery scents, purple florals, cozy vanillas. This is all of that wrapped up into one comforting, cozy, delicious fragrance. Not extremely gourmand, it’s definitely floral so don’t ride on the vanilla note if you’re on the fence about this. But this is so good. It has the same type of powdery vibe that my JPG classique EDP has… they dont smell the same, but they definitely have a similar profile. That fragrance is one of my all time favorites, and I could see this one becoming one as well. Unfortunately, I have bought this during the winter so I’ll need to wait for the weather to defrost JUSSTTTT a little… but I cannot wait to wear it. Absolutely stunning.

Amaitawana

I'm not sure how I feel about it. It's very floral.

huda_jubail

This is very similar to Mon Guerlain Floral but with Lilac instead of the Lavender.
Same vanilla and tonka bean, same vibe, I love them both and wear them a lot.
Lilac Love is very very comforting and cozy.
Performance is excellent.
Very suitable for cold weather.

stillalive

This really doesn't remind me of lilacs at all. I get a bit of chocolate and jasmine, but mostly I just get notes that aren't listed: honey, amber, dragon's blood??? It kind of smells like gas station incense, not in a bad way, it's just... weird. It's not as suitable for warm weather as I was hoping, alas.

Nessers

I want to mention this now before I forget. For those of you really enjoy a fragrance that has a cocoa quality, hot chocolate essence but also don't want to smell like a teenager shopping at Bath and Body Works, this is perfect for you. It is incredibly difficult to find a specific smell nowadays. There are so many fragrances out there and there are numerous interpretations when smelling the same one. I would have never have guessed lilac love to be a gourmand and a chocolate gourmand on top of that. The name and the bottle reference otherwise. At the same time, the soft floral elements are still there. It is a beautiful balance, hence the reason why I say it is an adult version of a young fragrance. I do recommend but only for the people who are gourmand enthusiasts. If you are looking for something more on the fresh side or perhaps a sweet floral, this isn't for you. Extremely feminine. I typically think any fragrance can be worn by any gender but I am not so sure about this one. Try before you buy. The quality is outstanding as usual. It's really beautiful for what it is. This entire house is exceptional. Edit. The outside breeze hit me in the face and now I smell the florals. Even better than I originally mentioned. I'm about to go broke because of this fragrance house. Absolutely stunning.

Luxu

I only tried it once in a big comercial place, after smelling a lot of things, so this is not the fairest opinion but was a very big deception.
I love powedery purple fragances but this was a water downed version of something purple turned gray color. Perhaps it isp just too hot yet for it (with Insolence I have the same problem, love it in cold, hate in heat)

rayofthesun88

This is a powder bomb that is also somehow syrupy. I'm not really sure how. The lilac and heliotrope in the powder, and cocoa and vanilla in the syrup. It's not a literal lilac, but more impressionistic, lilac at a slant.

Had a decant, liked it. Bought a full bottle, couldn't stand it. Something about this one hangs in the balance, for me.

WitchQueen

6/10. I wore my sample to bed and it's a nice bed scent. I don't smell any lilac, but it's soft and pleasant.

Joani_Cheddar

Ready for The World once sang about it - "It never really mattered too much to me, That you smelled too damn old for me, All that really mattered was you were my fragrance, even if I have 2 finance - let me put you on, I know that you will last all night, Let me put you on, man that lilac has a bite"... I really like this strong lilac fragrance with cacao sprinkled on top. Don't bother if you can not stand lilac. It is a creamy floral but floral it is. RATED LILAC

Lili1105

Very interesting and pleasant lilac-cocoa scent. I'm oversaturated with lilac and lily of the valley, so I couldn't wear it, but the scent is beautifully crafted. But the problem here is that something similar already exists on the market, so for this amount I would definitely buy another Amouage fragrance. It reminds me of Just Cavalli EDT quite a bit, so I wouldn't buy it.

HoneyyHaru

Ended up washing it off as I felt like I smelled like a mix of baby powder and old lady. Gutted because I thought the scent profile would make something really pretty smelling. I don't get any vanilla, or much of the florals either.

ForTheLoveOfFrag

EDIT: PSA - I don't know if this is allowed here, but Luckyscent has an exclusive Amouage code for %15 off: GG15

I bought the Garden collection and have properly test driven them all and this one, I cannot do. I admit, I'm not huge on a talc/lipstick/powder bomb and to me, that's exactly what this is. I get nothing else from this and it's a shame. It sounded so lovely. I know a Amouage fragrances morph and change this did not for me. I got none of the base or mid notes and all top: powder floral bomb. The rose that is in this isn't a sweet jammy one, it's a vintage lipstick rose for sure.

I'm sure it's lovely on other people or people that go for this kind of thing but if you don't, SAMPLE IT. To me, it's dated and off-putting. Even my hubby who likes Amouage more than I do, came in the room and said "what the hell is that??"

AdalynEverly

First Impressions (sample spray):
This is a deep rich lilac lotion smell. Okay. This is what I would imagine one other perfume I was interested in to smell like (from other reviews). I’ll try to remember it, and put it in the smells similar to. I’ll investigate it more on skin. Yeah it’s Bijan Nude Bijan, that smells like lilac lotion to other people
Edit: you know what this reminds me of. The cocoa is smelling like skin therapy oil by palmers cocoa butter formula. If this was a reasonably priced I may consider buying this. But to me for the price a perfume must really wow me for me to buy it. This is also very linear on the skin which it’s not bad, but I kind of want to smell something expressive. I feel like you could replicate this scent by putting on lotion like the one above, among other cocoa dominant body care stuff. Then get French lilac from Pacifica and you’re done. I also feel like this smells like poison girl a little on my skin. The heliotrope I guess causes this. Even though there is no heliotrope in poison girl Dior. It has a playdough effect on the skin for me.
Edit:
Okay I think miss fragrantica is hiding my review on this one. When I tried to look up my review it doesn’t pop up for me like my other reviews. Yeah the more I spray it. The more it reminds me of baby powder.
Final thoughts: to me it’s nothing special especially for not the price.

Summary:
Smells like: lilac baby wipes
Family of: Pacifica French lilac
Silage: moderate

Verdict:
Pass- It should not be smelling reminiscent of baby wipes considering the price point.

natafriden

Absolutely not
Smells very old for me, and very soapy, no lilac here at all. And I probably just don't like heliotrope notes. Good thing I bought a sample first

Oh man. I am a huge lilac lover. Every spring, the blooming of lilac bushes is probably the thing that I wait for with the most anticipation and excitement. If I'm driving and see a lilac bush in bloom, I'll get off the car and go have a sniff. Lilac is like catnip to me and I've spent so much time smelling it and seeking it out in perfume.

I've been waiting for such a long time to try this one. It's quite hard to find testers near where I live, or to find reputable places that will ship a sample to me. I've now finally, at long last, found my way to this - I'm just sat in Dubai airport right now, having tried this on about an hour back, and I've been smelling it all the time since and thinking about it...and I'm so sad. To me, this smells entirely like some kind of creamy soap. I wish I could remember exactly which soap it reminds me of. I don't really know how else to describe it except that it has absolutely none of the ethereal, fleeting, watery, transparent freshness of actual freshly-bloomed lilac, or the headier smell of riper lilac on the edge of rotting. It's just a disappointing, generic smell that I feel like I associate with something like a Dove soap.

It is very oily and long-lasting, which the bare minimum I'd expect considering how expensive it is, but I also wish it was as special as the name (and price-tag) promised. Big NO from me. I'll stick to my En Passant.

MatchaCat

Opens up with vintage, powdery lilac and white florals. It smells exactly like those round or oval French soaps wrapped in flower-patterned paper. The florals are very pungent and thick, like the Mugler Alien DNA. In the drydown, I only smell powder though, no lilac. Too mature and outdated, not modern and unique. There aren't that many lilac scents. I would love to see more innovation like maybe a dewy lilac scent with coconut and green notes. Not a fan of powder.

For reference, I'm female.

Lilac is my favourite flower and so rarely found in fragrances these days. I have a few of them but this Amouage creation is outstanding!

Lilac love is a very unique fragrance on the market. So delicate and beautiful. I wish the lilac smell would last more in this amazing creation.

While there is a plethora of cocoa/chocolate scents that smells really delicious and gourmand, Lilac love adds to the mix white flowers, purple flowers, peony and roses!

A big bouquet of spring flowers in full bloom mixed with gourmand notes without the usual sweetness of the latter.

The floral top notes give the scent a touch of powdery freshness that transforms after about half of hour in the most delightful, powdered cocoa, orris, tonka scent. Vanilla and a very creamy sandalwood come in really strong on me in the dry down.

It’s a very intriguing blend and it’s also long lasting!

In my opinion, Lilac love is the perfect blend of floral and gourmand notes. One of a kind!

ckorp8

Chocolate candy perfume should be a more appropriate name. Lovely indeed. You just have to like the sweet scent it envelopes you with.

FragranceRain

I associate lilac smell with more clean, powdery, musky, and soapy fragrances. Lilac Love has a sweet powdery dry down but the powder is cacao powder. Lilac+cacao is not a pleasant floral gourmand combination to me. In the late dry down, when lilac is gone, fragrance becomes a sweet delicious cacao powder skin scent.

Glamour_Magick3

I love lilac in real life. The floral opening was nice. I do smell the cocoa bit then it gets really powdery. I think its too “mature” for me. I would appreciate my grandma wearing this.. but shes not dainty so my great grandmother would probably love this.

It was a nice experience but its not going to be part of my collection

mistrall

This is beautiful. To me, this definitely is somewhat close to the smell of lilac blossom.
It’s not too powdery and is a gentle and well-behaved floral. It’s a scent for a fairytale princess: she has a long airy gown and lives in the clouds.

I'm looking to expand my usual "go-to" unisex fragrances that are woody, resinous, amber-y, oud-y, etc with patchouli, ambergris and anything else resinous, spicy & dirty. I've always loved floral fragrance blends; I own (and have owned) a few rose-oud-incense blends. Something about the mixture of florals, along with the sandalwood & patchouli base caught my eye; so I decided to give Lilac Love a try.

And Jonathan, "The Perfume Guy" on YouTube raved about this fragrance. I adore Jonathan and I think he has a unique & exquisite perfume sense...the fragrance notes fit (sorta), so I decided to sample Lilac Love.

So, Lilac Love opens as a huge, heady, indolic floral bouquet with (some) lilac and many other prominent floral notes. FLOWER BOMB!! Within 5 minutes, I detect almond-y heliotrope struggling to make an appearance from beneath the grand floral bouquet opening. The heliotrope never becomes too prominent, or overly gourmand-y because it is held at bay by the mixture of floral notes twirling around. But heliotrope is strong and yes, it is definitely present in the middle as this fragrance develops. Thankfully, the heliotrope and indolic floral opening are (somewhat) tamed with a sharp, sour, powdery, extremely arid & dry, vanilla-woody (sandalwood), thin patchouli base. The patchouli dry down is one of a leafy, or "green" type, another note I generally dislike in fragrances. The persistent shout of nearly sour vanilla and almond (heliotrope), along with green, herbaceous patchouli is a near turn-off for me. I do not wish to smell like heliotrope & wet mossy earth for several hours, all day long.

Longevity is moderate at 4+ hours. I've sampled and worn a few Amouage fragrances and silage is always low-to-moderate.

I purchased a sample of this fragrance after Jonathan raved about it. I usually agree with Jonathan 99.9% of the time...we have similar tastes in fragrances. But with Lilac Love, I'm afraid I have to part ways.

A neutral fragrance memory for me, at best. Definitely not intriguing enough to wear on a regular basis. As with all Amouage fragrances and EdPs, price-point is over-the-top.

I never smell real Lilac flowers,it's not native flowers
in the country i live in.so, i can't tell if
it's botanical or synthetic smells. LL
is not easy to wear its realy a niche
fragrance but is still wearable, specifically
if you like floral powdery perfume that's
different from a bunch of others.it turns a little bit soapy in the dry down .I can't
call it gourmand just because it had
cacao,tonka bean, and vanilla.Floral
powdery, yeah, that is the right type for
Lilac love

amanda0727

Has the same mature vibe as Love Tuberose except this is lilac instead of tuberose and this is veryyyyyyy powdery. The drydown is not pleasant to me.

JennyNoBull

it’s a mid-may afternoon and you’re 6 years old, riding your bike down the sidewalk. Lilacs are in full bloom and they mingle with the smell of white flowers. Then—-you fall from your bike! Just as you begin to cry, your mother appears and scoops you up in her arms. She smells like lotion and a light powdery cosmetic. She hugs you tight, bringing you inside and makes you a cup of cocoa. As you sip it, the lilac breeze wafts through the open windows and your mother strokes your head lovingly. You look up at her and she smiles. You remember this day, this smell and this feeling.

DiscoPolga

Ooof..this is VINTAGE. The opening is taking me back to the 80s, it's a blast of lilac and the classic Nivea cream. There's no lightness and no green accents in this lilac, sadly - this is the opposite of A Drop d"Issey, even though on paper they are both lilac + Nivea cream scents. It takes 30 minutes for Lilac Love to settle and show the sweet base of vanilla, tonka and orris.

Not for everybody.

WhiteFlowerPrincess

This is a chocolate and vanilla heliotrope blast, with some slight nuances of lilac, powder and almonds. I really don't get any of the other notes in this and really think this should be called "Heliotrope Love" instead.

I quite like the smell of lilac, but this is seriously not a lilac perfume. I also find it fairly gourmand and like it smells like a chocolate and vanilla cake with an almondy purple icing or maybe even a cupcake. It does evoke the color lilac though, just like the beautiful lilac purple bottle it comes in.

I'd definitely say this is a fairly young smelling and sweet perfume and I don't know why some others on here say that this smells like a mature lady's perfume? It smells like something a really feminine woman in her early to mid 20's would like to wear. Not a saccharine sweet teen fragrance, though.

I like this perfume, but it's not a love for me. I think I'd prefer it as a nice candle, perhaps? I certainly wouldn't buy a perfume bottle of it. It's pleasant though and I'd use it if someone gave it to me as a gift.

I find that this perfume has medium projection and moderate lasting power, lasting about 4 hours on the skin. I seriously think floral gourmand lovers who like vanilla and chocolate would really love it.

eau de dosa

I love “old lady” powdery and floral scents! This is a good one

melimelo87

Testing this now and this is really changing a lot on my skin. I get a blast of cacao at the top, not the middle as indicated, mixed with florals. I can smell the lilac but it is toned down, instead I get a strong jasmin note and gardenia.
Towards the drydown part, the florals are still present, and I can get some sort of fresh floral accord, which is nice. No woods, no vanilla and no orris.
I am unsure. It is blended nicely and the lilac is beautifully mixed with the rest. I do enjoy it, but for that price point, it is not something I see myself getting.
Good longevity and sillage, would be great for a winter floral, I do not see this as a spring floral frag, i find it a bit too heady to be honest.

Catmo

Just received this today thinking it would be similar to Mancera Choco Violette. Not even remotely similar. I get zero cocoa and zero vanilla. Just strong florals. My daughter said it smelled like nail polish remover. Very mature and dated florals. I’m starting to think Amouage just isn’t for me. I’ll have to let it sit and smell again in a couple weeks.

Anastasia.A

Belongs to a category of fragrances I don't like. Feminine and heavy, floral or/and fruity top with a patchouli, vanilla, tonka bean base. I like patchouli, but in these fragrances, I don't. I call them ''la vie e belle'' type fragrances, not for me.

Alina Mir

One of my favorite perfumes. I smell sweet powder and lilac based flower note

linzertart

I had been waiting to try this with high hopes as I adore lilac. I had heard from some reviews here and on YouTube that this isn’t really a lilac perfume, and I totally see that. I got a beautiful opening of light powder and florals galore. I feel like I could recognize each flower at a different point. First I get lilac, then gardenia, then, at one point I sniff some rose. It’s a lovely evolution. The patchouli keeps it grounded and warm. I don’t get cacao, personally, but my nose may not be trained enough yet. I want to keep smelling the opening because it’s so fresh and garden-like. Then, for me, it dries down to so much powder it smells like the most expensive diaper bag in the world. Pretty, but not the vibe I’m going for. Alas, at these prices, it’s a no from me. If this was at any reasonable designer price point, I would buy it and spritz myself with abandon to experience that opening and the garden walk feeling.

Rexarini

AN ABSOLUTE WINNER ALL THE WAY AROUND.

kkaattjjeess

The cocoa stood out to me immediately at first sniff (sorry to further confuse the reviewer just below, lol), and from the flowers I mostly got heliotrope and jasmine. There is indeed a bit of an old-fashioned vibe to this, but you can sort of assume that based on the obscene amount of flowers in this, so I don't think it should be much of a surprise.

I don't think I would consider buying this for the price it costs, but I must admit I do like it.

HollywoodNovaBaby

I’m not sure how anyone here is getting patchouli or cocoa, out the gate this smells like fresh lilac and jasmine. The two combined almost smell like hyacinth.
It dries down to smell kind of perfumey, very floral and beautiful.

ntlzhng

Aside from the semi-vintage smell that this has (I think it's partially the tonka and the patchouli or sandalwood that contributes to this), Lilac Love is beautiful. I am not the biggest lilac girl because it has a waxy, almost fecal note (I know, gross), and was skeptical that chocolate could be integrated into perfume so naturally. This is PRETTY. The dry cacao, almost like the coffee beans you sniff between perfumes, enhances the smell of the lilac. It's like a dark, luxe cake batter. This is also a very powerful perfume and you only really need a few dabs/1-2 spritzes to last a day. As someone who is smell sensitive, I was pleased to have it last the entire day and have it stick close to my skin without scent bombing everyone in my vicinity. I am so impressed.

jjluvsm9

At first I wasn’t a fan of this scent, I bought a large decant and just couldn’t find myself reaching for it. I realise now that was during the summer months and it wears a lot more pleasantly in the winter. Essentially what I get is cacao and creamy lilac floral, and a powdery heliotrope. It smells very rich and yes perhaps veering on mature but I’m 24 and wear it happily. It is the kind of scent which screams old money to me, smells very vintage inspired (without literally smelling vintage) and very feminine. I bought a full bottle since and enjoy it a lot.

JuanitaChristensen

Ooh this is such a delectable scent!! Creamy and yummy cacao and beautiful lavender field blended so well together. I love how feminine and dainty the bottle is too. Wears really long on me too, love!!

lmnsvgz

Although it is one of the more modern scents from the house, i still find it smelling a bit dated. The base is sweet, smooth, the scent is very creamy, but there is just something that makes it smell vintage. A very heavy scent, definitely not a safe blind buy!

petitfleur22

This is a gorgeous and very elegant perfume! stays close to the skin after the first two hours. The lilac is so enhanced by the cocoa, what a masterpiece!

takema

This was a blind but for me. I knew it was pretty risky. Amouage fragrances are known to be a bit polarizing and they come with a pretty steep price...even when gotten for a deal. Sadly I was very disappointed by Lilac Love. I had an idea in my mind what it would smell like and it was not even close. I didn't expect the patchouli to be the most dominant note. I was so taken aback that I decided to put it away for a few months and try it again without any expectation to see how I felt about it. The opening is still a huge blast of patchouli, but as it sits on the skin it really starts to smell like lilac. Growing up we had a large lilac bush in our backyard. After a couple of minutes on the skin I can smell that bush in full bloom. It is also less powdery than I expected. With so many typically powdery notes I was expecting a powderbomb, but the powderiness is softer and more subtle. I found the powderiness easy to enjoy and the fragrance felt like it floted around me. As the fragrance dried on my skin, I was really looking for the cocoa and vanilla. I was hoping for cocoa and vanilla sugar dusted florals. I was left disappointed. The cocoa was always overpowered by the patchouli. The vanilla stayed quite subtle, also seeming to hide behind the patchouli.

This is an uber-feminine fragrance. It is soft and delicate, with sweet fresh florals. Even the patchouli is light sweet and fresh. I first thought this fragrance was a little mature, but as I smell it, I also think of it as youthful and vibrant. I think the maturity I percieved is more old-fashioned/vintage, something I picture a young woman wear in the early 1900's. I picture a spring day when I smell this fragrance. It is perfectly suited to wearing in the spring or anytime you want to feel like you are enjoying a spring day.

Lilac Love has solid performance. It last all day on skin easily 10+ hours. The projection is moderate, and a light fluffy cloud of fragrance will follow you around all day. Towards the end of the wear (after 6-8hrs) it stays closer to the skin.

The packaging of Lilac Love is stunning. The beautiful pastel lavender colour of the box and the bottle is a perfect match to the fragrance. The satiny finish on the outside of the box feels luxe and special. The soft velvety inside feels very protective for the beautiful bottle. Amouage fragrances come with a pretty high price tag and they deliver with amazing quality packaging. The bottles a beautifully shaped. Not only are they visually appealing they feel very nice to hold. The glass is heavy, the sprayer is high quality and the cap fits perfectly with a strong magnet.

Ultimately this is a beautiful fragrance that just isn't for me. Initially it just didn't live up to my expectation. Even when I have revisited Lilac Love without any expectation, I find I am still not falling in love with it. I can recognize that it is a beautiful, high quality fragrance and my bottle deserves to find a home that will love her as she deserves.

Bettybotox

Could be mistaken for a soliflore, but it is way more complex than that. This is a very well blended perfume. Smells like plump bunches of fresh lilac blossoms, but cacao give it such a beautiful depth I'd nearly go so far as to say it smells even better than fresh lilac blossoms, and that is saying a lot. It's not something I want to smell like every day, but when I'm in the mood for a sweet floral I'll reach for this or Fracas which also seems very simple but is actually very nuanced.
Lilac Love is long lasting with a beautiful fragrance trail. Very elegant and timeless.

Kcbear28

Love love love. Not a big fan of lilac but this one is so well blended I can’t pick out any notes at all. Id like to think I’m not a perfume snob but this smells expensive like you know you get what you paid for. It’s just beautiful. I’ll forever own and repurchase this perfume.

Nikkicousinp

Definitely the best from the brand. It's so beautiful and elegant and smells like chocolate and heliotrope, which is of course listed in the notes. But
to me, the cocoa is more prominent than the lilac. Uber feminine, and a perfect wedding day scent if you ask me!

Smells like vintage makeup. Or a combo of powder deodorant and 80s hairspray. This smells dark and feels mature.

I don't like this. Found the lilac in the opening but it's already gone. The peony note is headache inducing for me in this one - not the fault of the frag, I'm sensitive to peony. Powdery, and I want more cocoa.

This is defnitely for a mature woman - she wears a bob or pixie cut, pastel pant suits, and heels.

Nynon

Not much lilac, but a whole lot of powder! I don't get any cacao, just a blast of flowery powder.
Smells older, imo.

looraw

This one evokes the image of giant pantaloons. If I try really hard I can tease out the warm cocoa and fresh lilac bloom, but ultimately, powder dominates, and for some reason I can’t help but imagine a giant pair of silly old-fashioned underwear. I do like soft scents, but this one is a little too powder-puff.

firstmate423

One word: Grandma!! I wore this to bed last night and could not sleep because of the smell. It’s doesn’t smell bad, especially at the beginning. But eventually it dries down to the smell of grandma in a cardigan sweater. Just No…

Bouquet Bleu

I expected so much more of this perfume. All the beautiful flowers with cocoa nuances... well it smells bittersweet to me, as is notes don't get along among them. It is complex, floral, gourmandy and soapy all at once. Just not for me. It is a very perfumey perfume, not a realistic lilac bush nor a sweet gourmand.

KarinaSo

Smells like I've spilled expensive raw cocoa drink on my clothes and I'm standing next to lilac bush :) I love lilac note here, but cacao with sugar makes it too sweet, elegant and soft, not me :). But it's pleasant to sense it on someone else.

sparklyunicorn

Oh my gosh, this is so lovely. I am in absolute love. I think both Amouages I own have been great picks for me. So happy!!! This one is a perfect daytime/casual scent. I love the sillage, as it is so unique and beautiful. I smell the lilac, cacao/vanilla, and the powdery heliotrope. The patchouli is incredibly soft and barely noticeable, just enough to ground the fragrance. This is going to be in my top perfumes for life, I just know it.

ash.nguyen6

Beautiful, soft, classy, elegant lilac blended so smoothly with cacao and vanilla. Who would’ve thought cacao would mix so well with lilac?! This scent is a staple for spring and fall in the daytime. Just bought a full bottle and it’s worth every single dollar. The bottle is a total stunner and the magnetic cap just adds that little magic touch to it. I adore this lilac beauty so much 💜

Azula

Silky Belgian hot cocoa paired with French marshmallows dusted in powdered sugar and hazy, wispy heliotrope, all enlivened by a delicate and dewy floral accord that evokes imagery of a lilac bush in the first stages of bloom during light rainfall. If you're not a huge floral fan, do not fret as the lilac here is extremely subdued and tame, existing to add a delicate bouquet-like freshness to temper/juxtapose the dusty, powdery gourmand elements. I don't see others mention the sandalwood here (perhaps due to the ubiquity of that screechy, masculine and synthetic variant that pervades the modern market calling itself sandalwood) but I'm detecting an abundance of creamy, sumptuous sandalwood akin to the one used in modern formulations of Samsara.

Timeless; a modernised and elevated interpretation of fragrances from bygone eras, specifically the late 80s and 90s. In terms of its texture and sweetness, I'm reminded of the original Joop! Femme (NOT dupes, just vaguely redolent). It doesn't smell dated, it just has stylistic similarities and nods to past perfumery.

Ideal season(s): early spring and late autumn
Longevity: fantastic, as is expected from Amouage. Lingers indefinitely.
Sillage: moderate; your fragrance will be perceived, yet never obtrude.
Versatility: appropriate for office wear, formal events or casual scenarios; a fragrant chameleon of sorts. Signature worthy.

bunnymusk

A baby being rocked to sleep near a garden window, the breeze filtering through, carrying with it the scent of lilac blossoms, sweet and dewy fresh. So gentle, so peaceful, soft as a newborn’s cheek.

Olfactory-realistic lilac and powdery clean baby toilettes, warmed by hints of cocoa and almond. Superb.

Nilodlien

I love this.

I also own and love Hypnôse, but to me they are nothing alike. With Hypnôse, I get a very vanilla passionflower mix. Lilac Love doesn’t give me any passionflower, and I really don’t notice the vanilla much.

For me, Lilac Love is straight up lilacs and cocoa powder. Genuine lilac scent - not cloying, fake air freshener lilacs. These are pure, “just picked from the garden and put in a glass vase” lilacs.

I never knew I needed lilacs and cocoa powder together in a fragrance, but clearly I did. For what it’s worth, this is the one that most of my 4th graders would comment on. I actually had one dad email me and say, “This is probably weird, but my son loves how you smell and wants his mom to smell like you. Can you tell me what fragrance you wear so I can get it for him to give her for Christmas?” Then I ended up getting a bottle from them too because, “There’s no way teachers make enough to afford this!”

Anyway, lilacs and chocolate. Lasts forever, but doesn’t have a huge radius. Lingers forever on clothing and linens.

spotspot

Yes, it smells expensive, and very powdery. A grandma scent, perhaps, but the best grandma ever. A grandma who never loses her temper, never forgets your birthday, and cooks your favorite dessert when you visit.
It's all there: cocoa, lilac, vanilla, the supporting florals and eventually, those warm base notes. It will swirl around you in a chocolaty, floral aura, eventually settling into a warm, nostalgic scent with the ghost of the lilac persisting in the (very) powdery dry down. I didn't find it cloying at all.
It projected for about 4 hours, lasted on my skin for about 8 hours, and stayed forever on my clothes. I can even pick out the cocoa note on my clothing the next day. Younger people might like this if their style leans vintage, due to that milky, chocolaty twist.

I loved it more than I expected. I've been trying a lot of spicy and/or unusual niche perfumes lately, so maybe a nostalgic, powdery floral came along at the right time as an antidote. Of all my samples lately, this is the only one I am happy to spray on before bed, and I go to sleep with a smile on my face.
I suspect this will be on my full-bottle list by the time my 8ml sample runs out.

I love lilac but still haven’t found a fragrance that is lilac to me. Maybe 1-ml was too small to sample, but I only got a soapy lilac/purple floral/ white wine grapes at opening and then I had to sniff hard to smell it again.

Didn’t get any other notes, just lilac. My favorite pure lilac is still by Pacifica scents. But I am looking for something that is natural smelling, gently floral, lasting, and not soapy. Real flowers smell so beautiful.

6/10-maybe try a decant to get a better picture of this scent.

TheMunchkinlander

Blind bought and loved it!!!! This is the most accurate smell I've gotten from reading the reviews, from the brief tootsie roll opening to the musky, baby powder dry down. I LOVE IT ALL!! At the center and all throughout, the vanilla is very prominent and soothes the cocoa, preventing it from being bitter. It makes me think more of ice cream or a smoothie rather than cocoa powder. This sits on a slightly spicy bed of what I identify as tonka and patchouli and just a pinch of sawdust. Around it, creating an ethereal aura, gently float the florals.

Simple and classy, sweet and a bit mysterious. For some reason it makes me think of a spring country afternoon in your favorite dress, the powder of beating moths' wings slowly falling on powdered sugar, and definitely the color lilac. Almost makeup-y, but indulging enough to keep it gourmandish, this scent is something I can't get enough of.

Longevity is amazing and with just a couple of spritz, Lilac Love will be very present for a solid 4 hours before it starts to quiet down.

brandybasisty

I get a fresh lilac just at the tip of my nose, but the sweet powder of the heliotrope and cacao mostly take over, leaving me an expensive baby powder smell. If you like powdery scents, this will be up your alley. Projection is impressive for the several hours then becomes close to the skin- and smells that way for a long time.

debra0503

Lilac flower has the most beautiful smell in my childhood memory. I remember walking into the college town community of my home, watching the college students walking around chatting and running, dreaming about when can I grow up to be like them, there was a big garden in front of me, well blended color palette with Green, pink, purple and yellow flowers, and I remember immediately smelled the sweet and strong purple flower that is all over the garden, it is an unforgettable smell, just like the most lovely childhood memory. This perfume reminds me of that time.

The opening is straight lilac and cocoa powder, which is very strong and can be quite off-putting. 10 seconds later, the cocoa powder takes over the show smelling slightly bitter and powdery; shortly after you will smell the heart of this fragrance, which is photo realistic sweet lilac flower, If you really dig deeper, you can tell it is blended with some soft florals (rose and peony?) to smooth it out, but Lilac definitely is the most prominent note, as the name suggests. It is a solid choice for lilac lovers, I've put it on my wishlist

raw umber

Once upon a time when I was working as an SA at a trendy perfume shop in SoHo, I was graced with the presence of a literal angel, who arrived on a shimmering cloud of Amouage Lilac Love. Looking like he had just walked out of a Mugler ad, he was violet-blonde with a sculptural hairstyle, muscular and eternally youthful-seeming, quite feminine in some ways but very masculine in others, and he was wearing a halo of the most divinely powdery scent I had ever smelled.

It cut through the cacophony of scents in my store like a velvet laser beam, and I knew immediately that it wasn't something we sold. I could tell whatever it was that it was rich, dense, classically informed yet modern in mood, and very skillfully balanced so that even a billowing cloud of it would be transcendent instead of irritating. I asked him what it was and he was happy to share that it was "the Amouage in the purple bottle." I only pray it smells as perfect on me as it did on this otherworldly being.

Lilac Love is unquestionably greater than the sum of its parts, but if forced to try to describe it, I'd say it's towering floral arrangements consisting of the gardenia from Narciso white cube, married to L'heure Bleue's heliotrope, and at the intersection of fresh green-white floral and powdery purple floral there are lilac accents, and the whole thing is afforded this luxe and languid tempo from a black and white milkshake with Belgian cocoa, to be savored one small sip at a time, (or you could go ham like the angel I met, and leave a cloud of helpless people in your wake who have no choice but to surrender to the power of your beauty). Both options are good.

sniffing person

...a well-made romantic, luxurious feminine fragrance; elegantly done, proving lilac doesn't have to be a linear simpleton or singular note without any depth. This lilac is silk scarfs, soft leather handbags, and oversized sunglasses. On the other hand, this is probably the only fragrance in my collection that makes me feel beautiful even when I'm in PJs and no makeup...I'm buying two more bottles, just in case.

Deep purple lilacs and rich cocoa powder. A match made in heaven!

Enrium

The Secret Garden collection - four sweet, gourmand perfumes that have a flower as a focal point - was a mixed bag for me. Lilac Love, the last one for me to try, thankfully allows me to end on a high. This is a very interesting and unique lilac scent. Sweetly floral like the others, LL makes use of a chocolately cacao note to act as a counterpoint to the lilac.

LL opens with a realistic, sweet, polleny lilac note, evocative of the blooms on the lilac bush in my parent's garden in May. Together with almond-like, powdery heliotrope, it forms an ethereal "purple floral accord", if such a thing exists. The powdery cacao note emerges early on, reminiscent of good quality cocoa powder, bittersweet like dark chocolate. It enhances the lilac-heliotrope accord in an unexpectedly perfect manner.

More traditional floral notes emerge as it develops, forming an initially waxy floral heart that gets more powdery as it develops. Sweet rose and clean jasmine lead the way, with melancholic, powdery iris trailing behind. The cacao note lasts, and tonka bean in the background adds Guerlain-like soft spiciness.

As it dries down, the sweetness is enhanced by smooth vanilla that doesn't overwhelm the other notes, and patchouli emerges, creating a classic chocolate-patchouli accord - a match made in olfactory heaven. Subtle woody and musky notes emerge, and it fades to a sweet, powdery skin scent after several hours. Sillage and longevity are moderate.

Creatively thought out and nicely put together, LL takes the hackneyed sweet floral concept in a new, refreshing direction (unlike the predictable vanilla tuberose of Love Tuberose, the cherry liqueur of Blossom Love or the synthetic aquatic mess that is Love Mimosa). Hazily beautiful, LL makes for an alternative spring scent. Great stuff. 4/5.

menna81

Dense purple flowers and cacao powder that smells realistic! Very sweet gourmand vanilla base. Great for winter if you're looking for an elegant sweet powdery scent! Very heavy and potent as well..

Kaylovely

Try meltmyheart for a true cacao powder milky Parisian dream.

perfumewave

Smells like purple flowers and cocoa powder. It's powdery but I don't get any baby powder scent from it. It purely reminds me of cocoa powder. It's a bit sweet, maybe from the tonka beans. It's definitely something different but not loud. I can see myself wear this in cold & hot weather. Worth for full bottle for me.

missogi

I had tried this maybe twice in the past in a shop, by just applying 1 spray on my arm. I thought I loved it, and it was very high on my wishlist. Yesterday, a lovely sales associate offered to make me a sample of it, so that I can wear it properly and make an informed purchase decision. God bless this wonderful man!
I absolutely didn't enjoy wearing it. To my nose, it does give off vintage/mature vibes. It's super powdery, and the drydown is rather soapy. The opening does have something lovely about it, but it dissipates rather quickly, leaving us with soft, barely projecting vanilla baby powder. I'm so glad I didn't go for a full bottle. I adore my Love Tuberose, Portrayal, and Amouage in general, but Lilac Love is unfortunately a flop for me.

SailorV

This is such a unique take on lilac and maybe a bit polarizing, because it's not the usual dewy springtime floral we usually expect when we hear a name like "Lilac Love". I think it's even better!

I can definitely smell the nectar-like sweetness of lilac in this right from the start, but it's blended with a bittersweet, dark cocoa note that makes it unusual. The tonka and heliotrope add a dry, almondy note not unlike marzipan or some almond-meal cookie dough. I can't stand the mealy texture of marzipan as a food (it might be the only sweet I really don't like), but I love it in this scent. It becomes quite powdery due to the orris. The other florals are only noticeable in traces, but they definitely play a role in making the scent airy and keep it from going fully edible.
The base is really musky on me. I don't know where it's coming from, as there is no musk listed, but it smells so intriguing and sensual mixed with the floral gourmand notes and a hint of sultry patchouli.
Beautiful!

It might have a little bit of a vintage vibe due to the powdery florals, but in my opinion the composition as a whole is thoroughly modern and innovative.

Whitesensation

Well. It is beautiful but still does have a strong hint of elderly favourites. Its has a vibe of moms perfume, or grandmas perfume... Not in offensive way, but more in a vintage shade. And I guess you really need to. like white florals to wear this one. A no from me.

cheviota

This is lovely! Very soft and powdery, like a bouquet of white flowers sprinkled with a light dusting of sweetened cocoa powder. I can see how this might not be for everyone as it does lean a little bit vintage/mature, but I find it quite comforting. Like a warm hug from an elegant woman wearing a cashmere sweater, dreamy and feminine.

maci2222

mmmmmm Lilacs and chocolate. Not the dryer sheet lilacs, not the sweetest chocolate. Remember that chocolate does not smell like chocolate tastes..it smells much more dusty giving this a powdery sensation.

buonobi

I think this is so powdery yet beautiful!
Imagining a grown-up girl/woman who is a noble, having afternoon tea in a lilac garden.
Very unique, I haven't smelt this kind of scent before.
It smells really like a dreamy "Violet Color".
But just too powdery for my taste, I don't think this suits my personality.
If you like powdery scent, this is for you.
I also don't think this is a matured scent. Lovely for women.
All seasons, feminine.

Longevity on skin: 6~8 hours

whimsyandhoney

Redmouse said below what I can’t articulate about this fragrance. Truly gorgeous in all the right ways. Unique enough to stand alone, but in a beautiful, laid back kind of way. Effortless! Like if Blake Lively were a fragrance (haha). I am honestly surprised this isn’t talked about more, then again, I’m not, considering the price tag is quite hefty.

Nilodlien

I love this so much. Who knew that lilacs and chocolate were the notes I’ve been searching for my entire life? Longevity on this one is huge! The first few days I wore it, I couldn’t stop smelling my wrists all day; since normally my skin absorbs most scents pretty quickly, that’s a wonderful thing. To me, this is a bit similar to Cashmere Mist - but a bit sweeter and smoother. I don’t smell chocolate, per se, but I think that’s what’s providing depth to the airiness of the lilacs. This is such a love for me. Although my family has requested that I please stop shoving my wrists in their faces and asking them to smell me. Several of my students, though, have complimented me on how good I smell.

Sanrio

I swear a harp started playing when I smelled this. This is what the gates of heaven must smell like.

Angelic, sweet, innocent, clean.

The scent of a freshly bathed angel. Reminds me of White Shoulders powder in the best possible way. It's like an angel just bathed with the most expensive soap, applied pure cocoa butter to their skin, and finished off by dusting themselves with White Shoulders.

All that being said, I admit its a tad too elegant and classy to suit my personal taste. I think if I wore it, it would be a case of "the fragrance wearing you."

Italian pigeon musk

This is beyond beautiful. One of the best from the Amouage female line.

The scent itself is mature for sure, but not an old lady smell. I don't think this leans feminine. Yes it's heavy on florals, but the scent itself feels like it would be worn by someone who could care less about the "gender" of the fragrance. They are someone who can appreciation the sophistication and beauty of how these notes blend together to create this unique scent that has so much character.

I imagine an old reclusive Kung Fu master smelling like this, like Pai Mei from kill bill. I get a sort of oriental floral vibe, like something you might image smelling in an old monetary.

Chocolate is there, seems to be acting in a way to blend everything together. It is slightly powdery, but it's more of a musty powdery smell, perhaps this is where others are getting the grandma vibe, but not for me, it's an ol factory experience, where I'm taken to a time where I've smelled this before but perhaps have never actually been. I love fragrance that can do this.

The sandalwood in the dry down is just fantastic.
Slightly reminds me of Richmond by Xerjoff especially in the dry down.

I'm testing this as an oil dupe from universal perfumes and cosmetics , diluted with ethanol to 22 % oil concentration. Will definitely be on my list to purchase a full bottle of the original.

*Updated review*
-Tested 10 months apart from first testing.
-I guess my preferences have changed since then... I found the opening rather cloying in a tropical climate.
-Dries down nice. Soft, powdery, lightly-sweetened cocoa powder.
-Overall: a comforting, feminine scent.
-Shines brightest in fall/winter. (-)

Such a beauty. I was on the fence about testing this one , Thought Lilac and cocoa would not be a good match ,Boy was i wrong. This is such a beauty on my skin . a real Camelion infact, changes everytime i wear it, especialy from warm to cold temperatur . In Cold temperatur the cocoa chocolat notes sings on my skin make s me think of Angel of stars Violette and the other from that range TM . quit strong and beautiful, Smelling it closer i get a viff of Guerlains Idylle and its beautiful sweet lilac .
In warmer weather the powdery aspect comes forth big time , i was looking at my arm could not understand that it was the same scent ;) powdery floral with just a hint of cocoa powder. heliotrop blooms ,peony ,lilac and jasmin mingles so well making it the most beautiful powdery flowers . Like a wedding bouquet beautiful and thought out..
the third time i tested it i got a memory from childhood turning up ,the heliotrop and florals was powdery vaxy and reminded me of my most treasured toy at the time "Keypers " a toy taht could hid little secrets inside . Very strange but oh so comforting and nice. this i only have a decant of at the moment, But this will for sure very soon get into my wardrobe as a full bottle .Its meent to be . love it so much . Unik ,different and perfect IMO <3

Out of all my Secret Garden samples this one was the one I tried last. Purely because I thought I wouldn't like it.. Boy was I WRONG!

I ended up liking this the most. This has a unique personality! I could smell the same smell as Blossom Love, that purple flower smell BUT I thought I was smelling woods and turns out to be the Cacao which was a VERY beautiful surprise and completely turned the perfume into a more creamy and round one. I still got purple florals but it doesn't smell purple to me. This is an intriguing perfume and one I would probably consider buying due to how complex it is. The others really disappointed me in so many ways but this one was definitely the prize winner by far!

Intrepid-Taste-1111

a total dream. other Amouage frags I’ve tried have all been beautiful but overpowering sillage beasts, and while Lilac Love still has excellent throw and longevity, it’s also easy to live with and easy to wear. it doesn’t smell at all like lilacs, it’s definitely a vanilla scent, but it somehow smells like the color lilac? it’s hard to explain. just know that if you wear this people will want to hug you. it also lasts an absolute eternity on fabric - one time I lightly spritzed some on a throw blanket and I still got whiffs of it weeks later. weeks!

staka01

Based on reviews here I ordered a sample of Lilac Love to try, and it is a beautiful fragrance. On first spray I get lilac and cocoa then as it settles the lilac blends in with other florals creating a lightly powdered floral sprinkled with a dusting of cocoa powder. The vanilla and tonka also come through as it dries down. It creates a gorgeious scent bubble around me and it has excellent sillage. I have been wearing it for a few hours so cannot comment on longevity but no doubt it will be as good as the other ones I have tried from Amouage.

RaghdaN

If you're looking for a pure, unadulterated lilac scent, this fragrance is not for you.

I've been on the hunt for a real-life rendering of whatever fragrance Yennefer of Vengerbeg (from The Witcher) wears. You know, the scent that has Geralt by the...nose.

This is definitely not gooseberries (Lilac Love is NOT a gooseberry scent, but Yennefer's fragrance is supposed to have gooseberries in it. This is for comparison purposes only lol).

But there IS lilac, and it's not the lilac I was expecting to smell.

It is, however, what I imagine a woman like Yennefer would wear. The opening is a bit off-putting, which makes sense since Yennefer is such a polarizing character. But then you reach the base, and you get to experience the mixture of sweetness that is the cocoa and the vanilla. This is an interesting gourmand, as it is sweet, but NOT cloying. You get to smell the lilac in the background, and it's subtle and delightful in its own indescribable way. Yep, this, in my very humble opinion, captures the essence of Yen's character. She's polarizing, she's different, but she's a bit sweet on the inside.

This is a powdery gourmand that I would wear all year round. Definitely unique and worth trying!

thestranger

A soft, creamy, hazy kind of old-school glam. Smells purple. Reminds me of that song "Lilac Wine" by Jeff Buckley. Only drawback is that it's reminiscent of a perfume my mom used to wear, so I wouldn't really want to wear it myself.

NanaGram54

This is powdery. Powdery and floral. I get no cocoa or anything spicy. I smell like I fell into a vat of J&J baby powder. I think the floral is lilac and iris but cannot be sure as this has just overpow(d)ered me. Two of my least favorite notes are powder and floral. I was hoping I would get some cocoa/tonka and vanilla to balance out the florals but no such luck.
A blind buy and an epic fail for me. I have scrubbed my arm twice, and still, it lingers. Even practically snorting some fresh ground coffee has not spared my nose.
If you love a long-lasting powder/floral perfume, this might be a win for you. If you do not, beware. Though every perfume smells a bit different on everyone, this one is a powder keg.

jeanharlow

This is another signature-worthy fragrance to me. If you get it in your mind that this is a powdery fragrance, then I think you will be on the right track when you smell it first. It seems that maybe others weren't expecting that. It is reminiscent of Narciso Poudree in that it is a sweet powder mixed with florals. I can smell cocoa powder, orris (another powder scent) and a sweet Lilac that dances in and out throughout the day. To me, this is a glamorous and angelic springtime powder scent.

P-Nay

I applaud this little tranquil periwinkle of a scent! It's a cross between seasons! Hot & Cold, Floral and Woody! This is a very Graceful, Delicate, Dainty & Feminine scent. Can be worn as a signature scent and all year round, in my impartial viewpoint! Hope this review helps!!

briannadedrew

I am really disappointed with this one to be honest. Yes I smell lilac and chocolate, however, they aren't good lilac and chocolate. The chocolate is extremely bitter, and the lilac is very powdery. It smells like you mixed some raw cocoa powder with some baby powder. It is VERY old lady-like. Not the mysterious, sexy, classy kind (which I love, e.g. Nirvana Black by Elizabeth and James), but the old lady in a retirement home who needs help going to the bathroom.

Now I know what you're thinking, based on my review thus far, why did I give it an Ok rating and not Hate? The thing is, when I smell it, I am not absolutely repulsed by it like I am with, say, Florence by Tocca or Miu Miu by Miu Miu. It is inoffensive and tolerable, it's just simply not for me. Far too powdery, that's all. I'm just disappointed because I love the smell of both lilac and chocolate and perhaps my expectations were too high. I wanted it to be a bit lighter and creamier, and I wish I could smell the other notes a bit more. But, I got this as a free sample, so at least it didn't hurt me financially or anything.

I really want to give this another chance because the scent did not change for me at all throughout the day (i.e. it smells exactly the same on me after a few hours as it smelled in the bottle). I will try applying more, and will try it on the skin as well as my clothes to see if it can change my mind...

clemmy

I purchased a sample to try (the 2ml sample of the secret garden collection is highly recommended).
I am very fond of the packaging, I really loved that lilac bottle and those notes. ....but for me the fragrance is a disappointment.
At the beginning there is a a lot of granny vibes.. 10 minutes of cringe.
My personal idea is that on my skin and nose heliotrope, gardenia and lilac do not work well together.
But the drydown is pleasant, long-lasting and powdery. Cocoa is a faint whiff, quite strong jasmine, sandalwood and some vanilla.
I will test again in winter to understand if it is worthwhile to get a full bottle.

Natalied

I have a sample of this fragrance in a red color. However, I purchased a fu bottle and the juice in there is clear. I know that my fragrance is not fake, it smells the same.
Btw, i have the old bottle. Does anyone know if it has been reformulated, and what color is it originally? Maybe the red juice is in the new bottle now.

silverma

Smells like a delicious chocolate covered blueberry

Rosemary14

This is amazing, gorgeous, angelic…The opening is a beautiful fluffy and smooth lilac and cocoa. It’s silky and rich and then you get the warmth and sweetness of the vanilla and tonka. As it dries down the fresh flowers like gardenia come out to play and dance around the edges. I swear every time I wear this a different aspect of it steps to the foreground. This fragrance is velvety and fluffy like a cuddly luxurious rabbit. I’m imagining an Easter of glossy, chocolate, pastel puffy lavender, pink, and white colors, and soft rabbit fur bunnies. It projects incredibly and lasts forever. I bought two bottles.

Sinologist

UPDATE: I just wanted to preface the review by stating that my juice was burnt orange/red. I have a pic of the sample which I received and will try to post it. I remember picking it out of the bunch due to the color of the juice. I saw some queries regarding the juice below.
------
I ordered about 15 testers from an online distributor which listed Peony as a main note. This was the second sample that I tried out of the bunch. I personally think that it's a very pretty scent! However, this particular fragrance is just not for me. The initial smell was overpowering, but it dried down and delivered a pretty vanilla encased gardenia smell. The scent was still detectable after a few more hours. Unfortunately for me, I couldn't detect my peony in this scent at all. Further, the cacao and tonka beans were a bit too noticeable for my taste. Lastly, for the right woman, who likes a bit of spice to her gardenias, this perfume would be a welcome addition to her collection.

Alinah

It’s my top one , the winner of the huge list that I own.
Sweet, vanilly, cloudy, flying around me and places I visit - for at least a day. No sign of Lilac that I ‘ve noticed at all. But associates with modern dark Miss Dior extrait some how. Lasting forever. Lifting my spirit and giving sense of calmness and peace. Never poisoning. At least 3-4 compliments daily from strangers on the streets of Eastern side of New York. My LOVE.

Vanian

After the first blast of lilac flower and cocoa I was left with a classic fragrance feeling, the lilac and the cocoa have gone and yes the style of 80s was left on my skin. This is a power house fragrance with superb quality ingredients, expectedly, having in mind the brand and the price tag. This fragrance in my opinion and according to how I perceive it would compliment autumn and winter. Do I want a full bottle of it? Maybe yes, maybe no. I do need to come back to it to test it in the autumn and winter. Very nice work, anyway.

JandrixDaisy

I bought a sample of this to compare it between Fredric Malle's "En Passant" and Issey Miyake's "A Drop D'issey." Between the three of these Lilacs, this one was my least favorite. I was expecting Lilac Love to be more of a gourmand, and that was the selling point of it, but compared to the other lilac fragrances, the lilac note is barely present. This one focuses much more on the creamy vanilla in the way a Lilac body lotion might smell, and its a beautiful symphonic scent blend in it's own right, but if you are looking for a really strong lilac this one is not it (especially for the price tag of this house).

En Passant and A Drop D'Issey present the lilac in a much more natural context. Both with alight aquatic notes. Issey Miyake L'eau was THE aquatic of the 90s so I was expecting it to have more of a water impression, but I was surprised ro find out that En Passant focuses much more on the aquatic aspect of the naturalistic presentation. "En Passant" feels like the most complete presentation where you get a freshly watered lilac bush. It's a very light and delicate fragrance that is almost melancholic. It reminds me of the smell of watering the lilac bushes at the days end, just as the hear it begins to cool down into the evening. The water on the cool air lifts up the fragrant scent of the flowers, but it is also accompanied by a slight damp soil smell. It's really beautifuly composed. I love the title, because the lilac's bloom is far too short, and every year that I enjoy them (they are local to my region), it's coupled by this understanding of how fleeting the bloom is. But that is what makes the experience much more meaningful and beautiful and something to be briefly treasured. This perfume doesn't allow you to immortalize the lilac, and I appreciate it that much more for adding that sadness into the composition.

I think "En Passant" was what A Drop D'Issey wanted to be, because it is simillar to En Passant in many ways, and the marketing played up the subtlety, but the Lilacs are turned up to 11 in this scent. They are immortalized. A moment in time where the lilac is perfectly captured at the height of its bloom. I appreciate this fragrance for that reason. There is nothing sad about it. It is bold and joyous and I purchased it specifically to be able to enjoy this happy scent of one of my favorite flowers in the dead of winter. If you are looking for a freshly bloomed lilac flowerbomb, this is your buy. Despite this being a lilac flower bomb, compared to the other flowerbombs (FM carnal flower, VR flowerbomb, EL Beautiful) this one is still very mild comparatively. True to the Issey Miyake name, this could be worn as a very nice casual office fragrance that has a single punctuated note.

All in all I added En Passant and A Drop D'Issey to my collection for their uniqueness. Lilac Love was too close to YSL Libre Intense.

iszzieanna

The perfect fragrance for a mother to wear to fancy occasions. On my skin, the tonka, strong lilac and a delicate heliotrope powder come through. The cacao is coming off more powdery then I would like. It's very basic for the house of amouage and I was not blown away. This smells overwhelmingly mature and vintage for me. Unfortunately it's pass.

PerfumeForLainy

Well done, Amouage! Lilac Love is a love at first wearing for me. Creamy and floral, beautifull abstract gourmand.
I would not call it powdery. Every "powdery" composition like Teint de neige by LV, Kenzo Amour, Loukhoum by Keiko M, To Be Tattoart by Police has a tendency to give a slight scratch at the back of the throat, imitating the real powder being innhaled. Lilac love gives a creamy impression of nicely blended orris and tonka bean with a healthy infusion of purple flowers. The lasting power is overwordly Amouage, stays on as long as you would wear it and does not ever become muddled. I love the nice sillage I get even on the second day from hair and scarf. Creamy, classy, flowery, very becoming and comfortable.
As usual, the bottle is very pretty and pleasantly heavy. Tender light violet colored and the magnetic cap with a stone of the same color on top of it.
We are having a cold spring, nothing above 10C yet, so it might feel different in summer. Right now it is absolutely perfect.

Emma92

I feel like I need to try this again - a sales assistant sprayed me far too liberally in an airport and it smothered me throughout a two hour flight. All I got was chocolate. The reviews here have me curious though. I have just tried Honour and love it, and have two bottles of Love Tuberose, so maybe this is worth a retest.

What I can say is that cacao is prominent, and do not over spray!

diddilybop

for me, this one took a few tries to truly appreciate.

LL starts with a powerhouse blast of lilac, peony, gardenia and other floral notes, which remind me of a fresh floral bouquet scented dryer sheet - but a fancy one! floral notes are something i struggle with due to my sensitive nose and finicky skin chemistry, but the opening in LL, left me intrigued for more. as the fragrance gets into the middle, the softness from the orris comes in, as well as a powdery chocolate vibe from the cacao. in dry down, the creamy tonka bean finally shows up, adding some sweetness with the milky vanilla, while the sandalwood and patchouli creates a warm yet soft spicy finish.

with LL, i get the scent visual of grace kelly, who just had a luxurious bath and gotten into a silk robe. she's sitting at her vanity where there’s a lovely display of purple florals in a cream colored vase, princess grace is pampering herself with a luxurious face lotion and body cream, and powdering her face as she's getting ready for a romantic date with her prince rainier III of monaco.

a beautiful and complex fragrance that exudes soft, pretty and sophisticated vibes.

Ellsa

One of the most realistic lilac smell, is very sharp and heavy in the beginning but after smells like a body moisturizer. For the money because of the performance is not worth it,but because I love so much lilac flowers I”ll use it until the bottle is finished.

brokesta911

Amouage Lilac Love (2016) - Chocolate & Flowers - #elisebenat #nathalielorson and @cchonguk didn’t try to recreate a Lilac soliflore, after all, this is Amouage. True to its name, it’s a very romantic fragrance. Powdery Heliotrope & Lilac with a backbone of White florals making the bouquet come alive. Together with your flowers come a box of chocolates - dark with Tonka bean and Vanilla. Glad it didn’t turn out too sweet - in fact, it has a drydown similar to Shalimar. Delicious.

bovogie

I would highly recommend sampling this first. I respect the art of this fragrance. However, you better really & I mean really like the smell of lilacs because that is the most prominent note in this. Literally a very heavy Lilac that’s well blended with white chocolate & hints of gardenia/jasmine to sweeten the mix even more. This is a very heavy fragrance that could easily become cloying.
While I love the scent of Lilac blooming in spring & don’t like it to be this strong in my perfume & certainly not with heavy white chocolates. Just imagine eating melting white chocolate as fast as you can while next to a Lilac bush on a extra hot spring day. That’s what this is & it’s just not for me. Woah trigger happy people, don’t choke someone out with this ;-)

LSAUG

This smells like a bottle of lilac perfume that you found in tucked in the back of someone's closet that they forgot about and it has spoiled. I'm glad I just sampled it and didn't blind buy a bottle.

taylorrose

This is a very beautiful, complex scent, but very heavy. Be prepared to have a strong sillage and longevity of this perfume even if you put just a little bit.
I definitely can sense lilac tones, which is pleasant because I love lilac.

renashepet

I really love this one, on me it's a nice smooth lilac with cocoa and heliotrope. It's quite powdery, so if you don't like powdery notes, definitely try before you buy. I would wear this all year, except on really hot and/or humid summer days - where I imagine it could choke you and everyone around you.

marymag

A gorgeous soft creamy floral, easy to wear and easy to love.

Sometimes my skin pulls the cocoa and vanilla sweet but mostly it is a drier warmth weaved in with the lilac and orris and heliotrope. Don’t get much patchouli.

Completely agree with the review that compares it to a luxury body lotion, one of the components that drew me to this fragrance in the first place. Smells like hugging someone you love early in the morning when the world is still slow and spring still barely just blooming.

Only one I really find interesting in the Secret Garden collection. Completely worth the price :)

karolina_p

One of the most beautiful scent in the wold... but only 4 hours...

XXYZZYX

To be completely fair, I'm not a cacao/chocolate note in fragrance kinda person but I do appreciate the art and craftsmanship behind Lilac Love.

I don't really enjoy this fragrance because of the way the notes come out on me. Like the reviewer before me said, it's smelling a little bit like Tootsie Rolls, but more bitter, which I'm not into. The floral notes that I can detect are all really nice (I do get a bit of jasmine!), but the Tootsie Roll note is overpowering the rest of the fragrance. I wish it had more of that dusting of cacao over a floral bouquet vibe, but I really am just getting Tootsie Rolls.

IlyannaRasputin

Got a sample of this and I love the combination of the purple florals and the cacao. The purple florals make this a very powdery perfume, chocolate isn’t a rich deep dark chocolate but rather cocoa powder sprinkled on a bouquet of flowers. This is powdery from start to finish. Great sillage for the first hours, moderate in the next hour, but I could barely smell it in the third, it turns into a faint powdery smell. Not full bottle worthy for me because of the longevity, but it is a nice scent.

Perpetual Collector

I just have to chime in, after reading the review bellow. To start with- i do not have to justify any amount spent on any perfume, personally. I buy what i can afford after bills are paid. I keep what i like, and what i don't, i either sell or return. On that note, my brand new bottle of Lilac Love was 107 bucks on Fragrancenet, not 300. Even if i had to pay 300, and did not love it, i would be a "man" enough to admit it.
Secondly, a real, real, real perfume lover does not either recognize, nor calls out any fragrance as a "granny" fragrance. Ever. Period. There is no such thing as a grandmother or a grandfather perfume, there are classics, made at a certain time, that were just as popular then as most "Sephora" fumes are today. It is all about your taste, and sense of smell, and your personal preference as to what you appreciate in a specific perfume.
Thirdly, there is nothing outdated about Lilac Love, it is one of my most complimented perfumes, and my husband is nuts about it (on me) as well. It is a sweet cocoa, infused with lilac flowers, what woman can not fall in love with that?
My honest opinion, not clouded with a need to justify spending 300 bucks on it, this perfume is honestly breathtaking!

hollandbri

Thankfully I only got a small sample of this but I couldn’t scrub this off fast enough. Sometimes I think the reviews are so beyond fantasized it’s the only way they justify spending $300+ on a generic granny smell. Lilacs? This is so strikingly misleading and outdated. Nothing unique or original here. Reminds me of my great grandmothers powder bathroom. A lavender dusty toilet cover. Cheap chocolate, plastic dolls, mixed in with some screechy synthetic floral combo. I am honestly shocked people love this.

_I.V_

Underwhelming, but very safe. It smells like a luxurious body lotion or a face cream that you paid $400 for.
Lilac is there in the opening mostly. I was expecting more cacao and vanilla in the drydown. Heliotrope / iris are dominant, and it makes this perfume smell powdery and skincare like. Very long lasting, however, the sillage is modest. I've asked my friends to share their opinions on Lilac Love... and they had to get really close to be able to smell it on me. Soft and feminine, very likable. It reminds me of Blossom Love, same base, but Blossom Love has interesting boozy almond note.
Well done, but I expected more... maybe it doesn't work with my body chemistry... sprayed it on fabric with same results though... Spring is here, and I hope I will be able to wear it often and discover more layers to it. For now it's a relaxing spa scent... like you took a shower, used a super expensive body lotion... clean sheets and a cup of hot cocoa are waiting for you. The evening breeze is fresh, and the lilacs are blooming in the garden outside.

Pros: safe, signature worthy, office friendly, easy-going, very likable, expensive smelling, classy with a twist.

On me it smells similar to Toujours Glamour by Moschino, only refined, creamy and expensive. Toujours Glamour + subtle creamy cacao and lilac.

myname

Sexual and intoxicating! That's my humble opinion. At first I was scared when I sprayed it cuz I blind bought it. The initial spray was way too floral and extremely sour on my skin all day. I also couldnt place the notes. I was worried and decided to sell it. After like 12 hours the cocoa, patch, orris and whatever else started to come through. Its a dusty dark cocoa powder. Soooo sexy omg. Projection is madd!! All in all I'm very pleased. Smells like a very very rich Arab queen in her 30's.

lavenderclouds

There's really no other way to describe this other than "pretty." Lilac Love is like wearing a lilac-colored cashmere sweater and sipping a frothy, rose-flavored chocolate milk while a soft, powdery snow falls outside. Feminine florals (lilac, rose, heliotrope) blend with soft, milky, powdery notes (cacao, orris, tonka bean, vanilla) to form a delicate, gentle, sweet blend that blushes. It's nothing at all like the oud- and incense-heavy, stronger perfumes that Amouage usually offers. This one floats like a fluffy, powdery little cloud against pastel skies. It's a perfume fit for a princess!

Unlike many, all I smell is lilac in the first 1-2 hours and then it comes down to a nice, slightly flowery creamy scent, which stays close to skin. I think I got the cacao vibe 5 minutes after I sprayed it, and that's all.

Being a lilac lover, I loved the beginning and also the creamy dry down, as it reminded me of fancy hand creams I used to wear just to experience their smell.

The only negative thing I can say is that it does not perform well compared to other Amouage lines. But I think I am going to have a full bottle soon regardless, as I think this is a unique scent I would like to keep in my collection. And I am fine with a moderate longevity and sillage!

EDIT: I have been trying my decant for the past couple of days, and decided not to buy a full bottle unfortunately. The smell is amazing from the start to drydown, but it doesn't last or project on me more than 2 hours.

-If you could bottle a hug, this would be it.
-Lilac love opens as an innocuously light, powdery scent.
-Wearable for everyday.
-More of a fall/winter scent.
-Inoffensive scent that might make for a good fragrance to wear to school/the workplace.
-Dries down to a delicious gourmand scent that isn't immature.
-Pretty and feminine overall. Brings to mind fragrances from the house of Maison Dior.
-Full bottle worthy if your skin doesn't react to this. (+)

*Warning*
-Not a safe blind buy as Amouage fragrances tend to contain ingredients that those with sensitive skin may react to.

While definitely not a "granny" perfume, Lilac Love does carry a touch of granniness in it, I am not sure if this is what KeyLimePine7 referred to as "nostalgic" in her comment immediately below. I remember being a kid in the late 80s, early 90s waiting patiently for my grandma to prepare for church. She had these little bottles of fragrance whose initial blast smell quite similar to that of Lilac Love - strong, synthetic when first spray, but not neccessarily a bad thing - my memory of perfumes during those era is that they all seem to be that way lol

The pastel color of the bottle and the notes have somehow led me to believe this leans more towards being an airy, girly, bright, fresh kind of scent w a touch of spices to prevent it from being too sentimental. However, it is actually a lot more dense, middle eastern, mature and formal in real life. The cacao is dominant on me and like some other reviewers I get no lilac, nor can I detect gardenia, jasmine or peony. The scent feels like this conforting, warm cocoon wrapping around you when you wear it. I would use this on a lightly rainy night in that candle lit dinner, or a chilly autumn day, rather than a bright spring morning. Depending on where you live, I think this can be a bit too much for summer, say in southern USA or more tropical areas.

It's a beautiful scent, and probably the most "complex" - it is not really complex per se, the whole line is pretty linear, I'm just saying it is the least straightforward of the four in the Secret Garden collection (Love Tuberose, Love Mimosa, Lilac Love, Blossom Love). Just not what I've expected it to be. That pale lavender bottle is just so misleading lol.

KeyLimePie7

This is an incredibly lovely, unique scent. It was an immediate love for me when I first sprayed it, and it keeps getting better in the drydown! Soft, powdery lilac and heliotropes with a base note of cacao that adds a deepness to it. As some other reviewers have mentioned, it has a nostalgic, dreamy feel to it. When I spray it, I just want to curl up with a good book and a cup of warm, milky tea in my pyjamas - interestingly, it also makes me want to dress up and go to a fancy restaurant. A very versatile fragrance, good for pretty much all occasions I can think of! Definitely, definitely recommend it.

This is soooooo pretty . Floral , sweet , vanilla and a soft soft cocoa . Feminine . I think this could actually be a safe blind buy .

the initial impression is so lovely. you immediately smell chocolate wrapped heliotrope clouds. it’s pretty for about 15 minutes. then it dries down to something dreadful. the dry down makes me think of a cheap fragrance purchased from a drugstore like jontue with a plastic cap all wrapped in a cardboard box with faded blurry images of happy, carefree women romping in fields of flowers. literally nauseating.

My mother had a lilac bush in the yard of the house I grew up in. It was a gift from her father, a man who died too early in my life for me to have formed any tactile memories of, but a man I am told was consistently brimming with love and pride for his family - and for his young grandson in particular. At my mother’s direction, my grandfather planted this rather gangly shrub smack in the middle of the yard, spanning almost the entire width - from the neighbor’s fence to the side of our garage with just a small pass through on either side. I say it was a gangly shrub because that’s the way it it looked three out of the four seasons through my adolescent eyes - utterly unremarkable. And while my adult sensibilities understand the conventions of having attractive Spring blooming foliage to delineate a separation of spaces between the play area and the garden, my childhood self just yearned for an uninterrupted sports turf, so accordingly the lilac bush often ended up being used (and abused) as a soccer goal.

We moved away from that house as I entered high school, and I would bet that the bush was dug up soon after the new homeowners moved in. If Google Streetview is any indication, the lilacs were replaced with some sort of untamed evergreen monstrosity, a landscape revamp clearly prioritizing privacy over aesthetics.

Still, I remember the lilac blossoms. The seamless gradations from purple to white and back contrasted against the darker green leaves and wood-like stems, the wafts of their floral essence leaving latent impressions on my young mind like a muse in waiting. And as rings true in countless other hazy examples, these obstacles of latchkey childhoods in time become the sweet nourishing fruits of our memories - the influences that determine the soft edges of where our personalities end and who we otherwise may have become. These are indeed the elements of youth we come to be the most nostalgic for.

It is an understatement to say that Lilac Love only brings me back to late Spring twilights catching fireflies, racing time before the streetlights came on. Or shooting soda cans off the neighbor’s fence with cork guns in the high sun July heat, the lilacs having passed their prime and withering to more muted browns. In actuality, it evokes the entire era and the pleasures that came along with it - most of all, from my current perspective, the inherent absence of adult anxieties.

It is in this spirit that smelling Lilac Love, and to a slightly lesser extent it’s Secret Garden Collection sister fragrance Blossom Love, reminded me of a poem that I hadn’t thought about for several years - XIV. Juegas Todos Los Dias (Everyday You Play) by Pablo Neruda. In one of Neruda’s most celebrated works, he lavishes his lover with praise and declarations of unbreakable desire, all the while expressing deep gratitude that, despite his many faults, he is loved and wanted in return. It is an unflinchingly honest and confident profession of the complex array of emotions, traditions, and qualifiers that make up the philosophy of romantic love. A plunge into the depths of vulnerability, one resulting in the realization that - given that this love is true - there is no reason to come up for air.

To me, Lilac Love is the sensory embodiment of this poem. And beneath the nostalgia and romantic notions, it possesses a subtle, yet certainly noticeable, ever-enduring undercurrent of lust. On some level, I could fall for anyone I encounter wearing this. After all, we all want to be with someone who makes us forget we ever had any worries in this world.

In short, look no further for a wearable swoon-worthy statement on desire and it’s relation to trust, as well as all of the early life influences that build up to it. This is the one. Or at least it is for me.

“Quiero hacer contigo lo que la primavera hace con los cerezos. / I want to do with you what Spring does with the cherry trees.”
XIV. Juegas Todos Los Dias
Pablo Neruda

Lemme just keep it short. It smells like you just got a new present, and the present’s wrapping paper smells like Lilac Love but that wrapping paper was wrapped with LOVE. That’s what it smells to me. It smells like something “NEW” and “VINTAGE”. And it just makes you feel like a happy lil girl that just got a present. I need this forever. PeRiOdT.

Phylira

This is so nostalgic to me for some reason. I can’t quite place it. Something reminds me of my childhood. This is a floral vanilla cake, but so sophisticated. This just screams elegance. I imagine a princess in a castle wearing this to accompany her long lavender gown, having afternoon tea in the garden. Hair not quite perfectly curled, but almost- like she just napped in it. What a character this builds. Beautiful one, Amouage. I’m impressed. I wouldn’t say this is blind buy safe- I almost did it, but I’m glad I got a decant first. The initial sprays too me a second to fully appreciate and I think that would have thrown me off had I spent this price on a FB. But I am absolutely buying a FB now, I can’t go on without this princess on my shelf.

Rebecca Kitt

Amouage Lilac Love just arrived. It is EVERYTHING. I was hesitant to blind purchase a FB as I was afraid it would smell of dreaded lilac bathroom air fresheners. It does not! It is beautiful, with a sweet creaminess that enhances the lilac blossom fragrance without making it screechy like those artificial lilac scents. I love it, it’s quite potent, and it’s enduring. There’s enough going on that I’d wear this any season of the year. I’m impressed. ❤️.

kiraagold

There’s kind of an Alice-in-Wonderland trippy flower vibe with this one.

A huge puff of powdery heliotrope clouds, with a wisp of Amouage’s signature rose incense–that settles into a gorgeous neon lilac for a half hour.

If it stayed there, this might be my favorite of the Secret Garden collection, but the lilacs are overtaken by the iris-patchouli-tonka of every Lolita Lempicka flanker in existence, almost jeeringly loud, until that too fades into vanilla tea.

The base is an enjoyable purplish sweet sandalwood that lingers a few feet from the skin most of the day.
I like it, but it’s not as special as Love Tuberose.

Gintaxx

This one is my favorite from the Secret Garden Collection. To me, the lilac here is not very realistic, but still incredibly beautiful! It is a very big, dense, powdery floral, and when cacao comes in, it becomes delicious too! I think it's a perfect fall/winter fragrance because it's so dense and vanillic.
Very long-lasting and so beautiful in the projection, I'm blown away every time I walk into my own cloud of this concoction. My most complimented Amouage, and I own a few :)

Mbrock

I smell no lilac in this. It is basically one note, chocolate, and reminds me of choco musk. I can't imagine why they named it Lilac Love and it doesn't showcase the lilac at all. Since I love lilac i'm pretty disappointed. This also has a very dark color to it and it looks dark enough to stain clothes. I didn't get good longevity and sillage either. I got about four hours with it sitting close to the skin. I'm just not happy with this perfume.

jero

I can see why Heliotrope is the most voted flower here, for Lilac Love is somewhat powdery and a little heavier compares to the impression of freshness and lightness of lilac, like En Passant. but I'll say it's still a lilac, it's lighter than most of the flower fragrances you named, speaking of the fresh air in its own language, and I won't associate this scent to the chocolate dessert.

like to idealize a beautiful lilac flower, the bottle in lilac-shade is a dream. before I can afford an expensive love the small glass tube in turned-to-orange-red liquid from 2016 stores a cherished lilac tree till now only growing in a middle eastern exotics garden.

lilacsandchocolate

Imagine this:

You're drinking a cup of warm chocolate milk. Lactonic. Creamy. The chocolate aroma has filled the room. Your window is open, and a branch from a lilac tree is resting on it. The cool breeze brings the aroma from the tree in to your room. Your grey Persian kitten, laying next to you on your bed, purs and turns from the breeze. You're reading you're book on classical romantic poetry, and you're transported to an enchanted realm. Maybe this is what springtime in heaven smells like.

This fragrance surrounds you with heavy projection, but in a soft cloud. It really does smell magical. It doesn't get TOO powdery on me, not to the point where I would describe it as "powdery" or "vintage" perfume. The powderiness is just the texture from the cocoa powder, but at least to my nose, the chocolate overpowers that texture. I can imagine it would smell like that to some people, though. I sprayed about 3 sprays which was honestly way too much much, but I got compliments from a total of 3 people in the first hour of wearing it (that's besides my family's first impressions, they were practically spellbinded).

Amouage, you've done it again.

PS guys remember to only use one spray (two if you really wanna be out there), this is a monster.

Edit:

After 2 years of figuring out Amouage batch codes and reformulations, I've got it. Amouage reformulates Lilac Love constantly, and I'm guessing it's also produced differently based on perfume regulations in Oman vs. UK. Older batches from the UK (from when it first came out, released in Harrods and Russia) are dark red, concentrated and absolutely delicious. This have batch codes starting with W and ending in -1. The more current ones made in the UK are a light salmon colour, starting with W and ending in -2. these smell similar, but not as syrupy or chocolatey or strong. The ones made in Oman starting with batch codes A1 are also salmon coloured, A2 is a hit or miss and A3 is completely clear. The clearer it is, the less it smells like the original Lilac Love. It's much greener, lighter, powdery, doesn't smell like anything distinct. On the bright side, I suppose it does smell more like actual lilacs in this case, lol.

tessture

I get no chocolate whatsoever, no cozy bedtime scent, nothing oriental. Lilac Love on me is a lipsticky floral that I do like, very light and floral but it’s not nearly as gourmand as the descriptions make it sound. Also, there's no real lilac in this. It’s violet, lipstick violet. Very pretty, but doesn’t last very long. It’s so light, it’s hard to believe this is an Amouage. It also lacks the layers and complexity of most Amouage fragrances. I ended up giving it to a friend who favors light, floral designer type fragrances, which is sooooo not what I expected when I paid all that money for the big sample. Disappointing.

humairum

Got samples from Amouage, great scent and excellent quality, longevity etc etc
But its just not for me.
Lilac just doesnt work for me, I love it as a room/environmental scent but not On me.
When I tried this it gave me a headache.
Finished my sample by spraying it here and there as a room freshener. (Sorry Amouage)

Scented.Key

Gorgeous gorgeous gorgeous! If you aren't afraid of powerhouse florals that melt into Hershey's milk chocolate cocoa powder, that dances with a bit of vanilla pod and patchouli and more blooming flowers... then turns back completely into powdery chocolate and sandalwood that you will smell on your arm the next morning and make your mouth water... you will love this.

It is intriguing and different. It takes you on a journey as it changes. It even confuses your brain. I literally wanted to lick my arm the next morning I still smelled it. Longevity. I blind bought this. Yes, AN EXPENSIVE BLIND BUY. I am not disappointed even a speck. Beautiful!

VANILLA CLOUDS 77

Here is what I get from Lilac Love, sweet and powdery velvety flowers but mostly Heliotrope, the powder from Heliotrope is so thick when meets with the cacao and vanilla it gives me the perfume high I get from only a very few other perfumes I get, like listening to trance music and getting hypnotised by it’s repetitive beats.
I am just talking about how this perfume is masterfully and detail fully ultra blended and very unique.
Very sophisticated distinctive classy and feminine, gentle but persistent as in noticeablity.
6-7 hours of longevity with perfect projection and sillage.
I don’t want to talk about it’s price but I think rather than having 10 many perfumes of similar synthetic smelling fumes, I should only have only one refined and natural smelling one, that is non synthetic, and have it as a signature. For the very gourmet and mature noses the price of a perfume should never be an issue at all.
The issue with the prices and judging a niche perfume is only an untrained nose issue I believe.
The only other perfume slightly Lilac Love is reminiscent of is Tom Ford’s Velvet Orchid towards its dry down.

@thornefield
The color is reddish and it will stain your clothes. Learned the hard way last year while spraying with my white turtleneck on. I now spray before putting clothes on with no issues.

thornfield

I just received a decant of this, it's such a lovely lilac and creamy chocolate. I'm getting some heliotrope, too, which gives it that almond-y note which I love. It's strong, one spray filled the area around me, but still it feels airy and soft. I see the comparison to Instant Magic, but this doesn't give me the baby wipes smell that that one does.

I do have a question though- the juice in my decant is bright red. The color transferred to my arm where I sprayed and I had to dab some of it off. I know the bottle is opaque so you might not be able to see the color of the liquid, but is this how it should look/perform? I would never want to spray this near my clothes and risk dyeing them red.

kml24

Unlike many reviewers, Lilac Love went on me like a lilac-bomb. It started with a huge burst of sweet flowers that still could definitely be identified as lilac, then gradually mellowed into an earthier and truer lilac. I didn't love the sweetness the first time I wore it but it didn't bother me much on later tests, maybe because I was expecting it. The central lilac scent is very true to the flower and is pretty but interesting from that earthiness - all I can guess from the notes is the orris but it might just be some weird way my skin and nose reacted to the perfume. I got a definite gourmand-ish feel from it with hints of vanilla and powdery cocoa but it wasn't a major player for me. The projection starts huge and stays pretty moderate and it lasts a decently long time.

MixedTastes

I was a bit taken aback by the opening of Lilac Love. It felt like someone had shoved a tub of cocoa powder right up to my nose and I was breathing in a sweet, dry, slightly dusty (chokingly strong, but very realistic) cocoa note. It was a very loud opening and I’m not a big fan of cocoa/chocolate notes, so this was a all a bit too much for me.

But within a few minutes a warm, powdery heliotrope crept in. A few minutes more and it combined with a shy gardenia, creating a slightly boozy amaretto effect. Still very strong and a bit overwhelming, but I was warming to it.

The dry-down, though...just lovely. Around an hour in to wearing this, the cocoa and heliotrope soften, the lilac blooms and the effect is something quite delicious - a mix between a creamy sweet gourmand, a dry cosmetic scent and a delicate, pale purple bouquet of flowers. In the very last stages of wear, it fades to a pretty lilac and vanilla skin scent.

Because of the strong cocoa opening, I’m undecided on a full bottle. But there is no doubting that this is a very special fragrance that slowly unfolds to reveal its true beauty. First class.

BananaonSpeed

Like so many other people here, it seems I was drawn in while searching for something lilac dominant. My childhood garden was full of lilac and after the recent passing of my mother, I was searching for something which would bring back those memories.

I'm a fan of several Amouage releases so this one caught me off guard. Not only was it nothing like the name suggests, it was also nothing like anything I've experienced from the house before.

My very first impression was how similar this was to Guerlain's L'Instant Magic. I didn't hate it but this wasn't the blast of lilac that I was hoping for. This wasn't a blast of anything. It was calming, soft and powdery.

I gave it a chance and it began to evolve but still not anywhere near what I was expecting. Cacao is without a doubt the dominant note here and I keep switching between feeling that it is a really well done, natural slightly bitter cacao to one that smells incredibly reminiscent of Palmers Cocoa Butter. Perhaps that's also part if the gentle evolution of this fragrance.

Other than cacao, heliotrope adds a gentle, powdery floral vibe and there is something heavily creamy going on, with vanilla in the mix.

Eventually I began to get lilac showing through and in those brief moments, it was a beautiful, realistic lilac. It's almost like the notes swap places and then they swap back again. I like that between the cacao and the lilac, each note has it's moment of taking centre stage and being easily identifiable.

Either way, I like Lilac Love but I don't love it and I couldn't justify the price of a full bottle.

Judith Esquirba

Oh the unreal beauty of this glorious perfume! As I wear this I feel swept away to a garden filled with lilacs, lush foliage and even some Wisteria creeping down the walls of this secret garden. But, then, something gourmand creeps in as well, frothy milky chocolate mixes smoothly with the lilac, heliotrope and powdery accords. A heady, fairytale Fragrance that lasts for hours! ! Will be repurchasing once my bottle runs out. Absolutely gorgeous lilac /cocoa powder/vanilla/Tonka bean juice. LOVE!💜

Lulushka

Like everyone else, my expectations for this perfume were completely subverted when I actually got to experience it. Also like everyone else, I thought I was getting a spring floral—something that Amouage hasn’t really done yet, to my knowledge anyway. Because I had those preconceptions, I was completely freaked out when I smelled Lilac Love, and I wrote it off as a never-again scent, something I would pop in as an extra in a swap box or give to a friend, if I could find anyone who liked it, which seemed unlikely since it was even too weird for me, and I like weird and challenging perfumes. But like a song that gets stuck in your head that first annoys and then seduces you, Lilac Love called me back, and I had to try it again. Was it really that bad? Could I find a place or a time where I could see myself wearing it? What the hell was it, anyway? A gross gourmand? A funky, almost curdled milky floriental? Was it a misguided attempt at a girly juvenile done up with the more-is-always-more Amouage treatment? It reminded me of Brooke Shields in Pretty Baby: a little girl tarted up with too much makeup and grownup lingerie—unsettling and perverse, and not in a fun way.

Like any good perfumista, I occasionally gave ir another try. And eventually this bizarre concoction of innocent florals and dirty chocolate milkshake started to grow on me. In the end, the hook that got me was its heliotrope, because I can’t resist a powdery heliotrope accord, no matter how much discordant baggage it might be carrying on its gauzy little shoulders. I got there the way I have so many times before with a perfume I can’t wrap my head around: I wore it to bed, and that’s exactly where Lilac Love’s natural habitat lies.

I’m a sucker for comforting powdery scents when nighttime rolls around and I’m getting ready to settle in with my melatonin and whichever book is currently on the nightstand or queued up on my Scribed audiobook app. My usual choices are pretty predictable; I go for Teint de Neige, L’Instant Magic, or something along those lines—soft, pillowy, fairly linear scents that I would never wear outside of the house—although sometimes I reach for Shalimar if I want something a little witchier and more seductive. Lilac Love is a perverse spin on the same idea, a more complex and almost overdone take on a classic boudoir scent with a busier profile with a more pronounced gourmand element.

I don’t know whose idea it was to blend a classic spring bouquet—lilac, rose, and the aforementioned heliotrope—with a languid, lactonic, powdery accord that reminds me of Carnation instant breakfast drink—or what they were smoking, but in a bizarre way, it totally make sense. Take away the slightly sharp lilac and you have a perfectly safe little number that fits in with the usual suspects—but with that lilac, the milky cocoa takes on a strange quality that reminds me of creepy old Brothers Grimm fairy tales or something Tim Burton might imagine, a lavender-tinted Victorian bassinet with a deep purple matte frame with pointy Gothic woodwork resting delicate cat’s claw feet, with a deep and puffy throw blanket in one of those lurid pastels that you can get somewhere like Z Gallerie: a clash of lurid pastels, a psychedelic pillow fight. The scent isn’t particularly mysterious, but the inspiration is. How did this come to be? What was the brief, and what were the intentions? Is this something for little girls, or Harajuku Lolitas? I have no idea, but I would love to find out.

Whatever its origins, Lilac Love won me over the first night I snuggled up with it and turned the lights out. Its fresh florals had their moment at the opening, and then they settled into the scads of soothing powder and puffs of cocoa, and instead of feeling choked out, I felt just interested enough that I stopped thinking about whatever happened that day, and all the noise of the modern world disappeared into a haze of old fashioned nursery scents and retro violet cosmetics. Even its previously disturbing chocolate patchouli seemed to swirl into something that, if not exactly harmonious, was evocative of childhood pleasures, and it sunk into my silk comforter and down pillows, and gave way to a plush, drowsy, ridiculously luxurious blend that carried me off to sleep. Thinking about the strange perfume quieted my usually busy mind, and in that context, it worked like a goodnight kiss from a trippy but benevolent fairy godmother. I felt spoiled and overindulged and a little silly, but also serene and relaxed.

So now I think of Lilac Love as a perfect bedtime companion. My decant is disappearing at an alarming rate, and I’m trying to justify its outrageous price tag so I don’t have to worry about running out. (It was easy to splurge on my other Amouage, because I wear them during the day when I need a shot of confidence or something to polish off a maximalist outfit that calls for something grand and outrè, but somehow spending 300 dollars on something that I’m only wearing with my pajamas seems kind of ludicrous. On the other hand, I’m a notoriously difficult sleeper—I’m writing this review at 3:30 in the morning—and anything that helps me unwind and keep a relatively normal diurnal cycle is worth taking seriously). It hasn’t displaced my other favorite bedtime perfumes, but it’s something that I don’t want to be without if I can help it. It’s a ridiculous indulgence, but isn’t that what perfume is really about?

I’m almost sorry I’ve come to love Lilac Love, not only because it’s expensive but also because a perfume like this one doesn’t really fit with my self-image as a sophisticated, grown up woman with advanced degrees and several languages under my belt. It seems like something that Ariana Grande would bathe in gallons of before flouncing around in her Tiffany diamonds, maribou slippers, and crystal-encrusted kitty ears—a little vulgar, a little juvenile, and maybe a little embarrassing. But then again, self-care is more important than ever in these trying times (as I write this, there’s a terrifying pandemic raging through the world, and everyone is pretty much stuck in their homes, hoping that we can escape its ravages soon and resume life as we used to know it). So maybe it’s a good time to at least buy a bigger decant, because maintaining a secure little cocoon to take shelter in is the only way to stay sane right now. Besides, a kind of crazy perfume seems like a healthy response to a crazy world, and I don’t think things are going to get less crazy anytime soon. And a feeling of safety and shelter from the storm, however illusory, is precious enough to be worth the expense.

bluejellyfish444

On me, this started off with a prominent gardenia note. After a few minutes, other notes became more noticeable; orris root, vanilla and white flowers blended together to create a milky sweetness. That and the wonderful blend of flowers make this fragrance addictive. It has an almost dreamy quality to it.

Sillage is good but not overwhelming. Too bad lilac love is quite expensive, I would have definitely bought it otherwise.

LadyIva

Amouage Lilac Love is a very interesting perfume, not at all what I expected. First of all, do not be fooled by its girly bottle, because this fragrance is perfectly unisex. As other reviewers have correctly observed, the strongest note is bitter, raw cocoa powder, followed by sharp heliotrope, something peppery-powdery (orris root?) and sandalwood, while lilac itself is very subdued. I'm familiar with the smell of actual lilac, as these bushes are very common in my home country; but that particular smell is barely detectable in this fragrance. The house of Amouage should have named it 'Blue Cacao' or something like that!

flyprincess

This is a stunning lilac & gardenia combo dusted with cacao. Wow. It has great sillage and longevity - I first tried it yesterday and could smell it this morning. It’s February, so colder here now, and it smells absolutely amazing - it evokes my grandma’s lilac grove from my memories. A must have for me.

Anast4s1a

In summer time the aroma gives on me heliotrope & cocoa with milk, and in fall / winter season i feel powderly lilac.
Lilac flowers here purple, lush with notes of milk chocolate.

Lilac Love - is insanely cozy... In fragrance is enough and of powder and spring flowers. Deep & very warm floral-creamy scent. It's sweet and stringy like syrup. In the cold season in it so cozy and sweet.

petal411

A clean classy powdery, but not baby powdery, cloud that surrounds and lasts all day. Beautiful fragrance that reminds me very much of Versace White Jeans. If not for the steep price, I would wear this everyday. So happy to own it.

chanelperfume

Too chocolaty for me. I was hoping for more flowers. Sorry but it’s a big NO!

Firooz

It's absolutely adorable and I will definitely buy a full bottle soon. The very first burst reminds me of something blurry in my childhood. I can clearly smell lilac at first 10 min., then it slowly turns to very comforting powdery vanilla and hot chocolate. I love it.
