That tea gives me a very mossy vibe on the opening, it dries down incredibly though, tea mixed with rose really works well. It's really special.

A very unique take on a rose & oud combo

Leather (smells like a purse), rose, all in a watery black tea, but also more interesting and nuanced than I just described. When people say it is both heavy and light, I understand exactly what they mean. I really like it on my skin, smells sublime and the tea dominates, and one of the few tea scents that you could even wear at night in the right context, but somehow it is a bit too heavy or masculine, when I spray directly on my clothes. Perhaps then the leather becomes more prominent. I am not sure.

Lasts 6+ hours with moderate projection.

AnanZ

Got a tiny vial of it, Notes of tea and roses, very fresh. Tho it does not last on my skin at all so it’s more of a cologne to me.

Anastasia.A

Slightly sweet, synthetic smelling, unisex. 4/10

I got mine for free when I flew Emirates first class in the shower spa. I personally don’t like it, there’re way better Bulgari perfumes Emirates would’ve selected to give out as an offering than this one. The scent is very heavy and light at the same time..

Akscent

Black tea, um, sure, it is in there somewhere, but it lies well beneath saffron (leather) and rose. In this iteration of Au Thé Noir, as opposed the intense version, which I personally prefer, the rose is more noticeable and the leather tones less present, which makes this one easier to wear, if only slightly.
Great for fall days. Office safe. Not terribly long lasting or overtly projecting. This scent is nice and just a bit outside of the mainstream & for that reason, well worth trying if you can find it.

Radknight

I received this on an Emirates flight from Sydney to Dubai Business Class. Nice scent but probably a bit too much rose for me. Its not a close up, intimate scent and projects quite well with good longevity so my only guess that they gave it to us to negate any BO developed in the entire section over a 14 hour flight. I just wish United or QANTAS would offer something similar for the grueling 14 hour Sydney to LA flight in economy.

AnastasiaGostieva

Kinda typical rose/oud scent with some spices and darker leathery base. Not too heavy and I bet it’s a decent “European version” of rose/oud perfume, but nothing spectacular.

I'm sorry but this smells like a shoe store. This smells like an old man's loafers. It's not that I just don't like leather as a note, but this is such intense, dark leather and tobacco, it just has no appeal to me, and I certainly don't know how on earth it relates to black tea. I regret buying a sample.

ballerinanoir

I tried this at the store and I must confess it smells like a very, VERY fancy spa in some lavish place in Middle East.

It is an unusual scent (no fruit, no patchouli, no musk). I have to say it suits me on my zen/calm/tidy/relaxed days. Suitable for all seasons, it does not last longer on skin but it does on clothes.

If I had to choose a character for this perfume it would be Catherine Tramell from Basic Instinct.
There is an atmosphere that screams low key richness, class and good taste in it. I really liked it. Too bad I didnt buy it and cant find it anymore!

Odor Aeternitatis

Masterfully well-blended rose oud combo
This is a rose-oud type of fragrance with a combination of leather and tobacco to add masculinity. The green tea note here adds a freshness to the fragrance.

I am not a fan of rose-oud fragrance but have tried several samples from various brands. To me, this is one of the best rose-oud combos ever created. It's refined and masterfully constructed which makes it difficult to find a negative point on it. The good thing is that it's not a Middle Eastern type of rose oud, it's created based on the Western taste and style. But you should like this category, that's the reason for most negative comments below, not all fragrance categories work for all people, everybody has his/her own favorites.

It's sadly discontinued ... Grab a full bottle if you find it somewhere

Mix black orchid with rosé water & ivy from bath and body works, you’ll the exact scent of this perfume

Mystères du Château de Dé

Wearing from my couple year old bottle. It's so elegant, aromatic and light touch. The reviews on this fragrance are especially mixed, and even the descriptions don't seem to be about the same fragrance. You had best try before you buy. Sits between the Hermès-Ellena transparency and Acqua di Parma's thicker fragrances. I enjoy all Cavallier's Aqva fragrances, as well.

Fiammuz

The worst perfume I've ever tried. No tea, no tobacco, no leather or rose. Someone here wrote that it smells like petrol and in fact the first thing that came to mind is the smell of a car engine. Maybe not petrol but lubricant. It smells exactly like birch essential oil, a repulsive thing and I can't wash it off, it's very persistent. I think it's oud, the authentic one, it kills every other smell, and it kills me too! And I blindly bought a huge bottle! Poor me! 😰
Update: To cover the stink of this perfume I tried spraying The Vert by Bvlgari on top. Well... I have to admit it was a good marriage, The Noir gave the freshness of The Vert a very interesting and original smokiness, maybe I won't sell it...

Lee_Quit

I've just used a small 40ml body lotion, which I got as a gift.

That smell was amazing. It was projecting through a shirt and long sleeve thermal shirt.

I wish it was available in a reasonable price or at least a solid clone/smell-a-like was mentioned here and there. Any recommendations?

Cherry_Darling

Very natural leather, no sweetness so quite dry and masculine. Rose is lost on this one and oud is also toned down, mostly it's a realistic, dry leather with some tea leaves of the bitter variety. I have the cologne. This is not for me, but I have a 5 ml or so mini if anyone wants to swap with me in UK!

morinatk04

Does anyone else smell gasoline, and gasoline only? I can’t stand this scent. I had such a high hopes for this one, after reading so many positive reviews;(

Karen.M.OShaughnessy

I ordered a small bottle of eau de cologne to try it out, as I love 3 other Bvlgari au thé perfumes. It smells just as ‘dark’ as reviews say, but I like it a lot. I get whiffs of the oud, the tobacco and the leather, but it definitely smells great on a woman like me. Edit: I ended up buying a 2.5 oz. bottle and it’s absolutely delicious!

Carpe Noctem

I'm not a leather perfume wearing person, but this is so nice! It smells more like a natural leather than a lot of what is out there. It (just the leather part) reminds me of one of my fav perfumes I just keep samples of to sniff and wear sparingly, and that is Arabian Horse by Pierre Guillaume.

I don't get any tobacco or patchouli at all. It's mainly a one note perfume for me.

drugstore classics

I LOVE The Bleu! So, I am also thrilled to test any others of the line.

Not so sure I would recommend a leather/oud/black tea combination for a women's scent. Very masculine to my nose. I definitely find it well done, just so manly I would have difficulty carrying it off. Yes, unisex, if you like rose that is not sweet or even very visible. I don't smell the black tea much either - more sharp notes and oud.

Smells black, though! Well blended and well done.

BougieGirlShops

Beautifully blended and sophisticated fragrance. This is great for people who think TF Black Orchid or other popular leather/tobacco fragrances are too beastly and powerful, this is a nice alternative that is lighter, more user friendly, and slightly leaning feminine.

I get an initial anise note when first sprayed which dissipates rather quickly. It settles to a smooth leader, light tobacco, and just a bit of dry rose in the background. You definitely get a tea note, that's infused into the fragrance, and it doesn't stick out like a distinctive note. Warm patchouli but not overbearing.

It's sophisticated yet at the same time, a very empowering "don't mess with me" type of vibe.

ekrapf

I bought a very small sample splash bottle of this. I was really looking forward to trying this - first time trying a perfume with the top note as leather - since I already adore oud and rose blends. Out of the bottle it smelled good, but unfortunately on my skin it smells like bandaids. I think it just my skin chemistry & the leather note. I gave it away.

Sweetz99

At the first whiff, the patchouli scent hit me head on! Wasn't what I expected at all and I prepared to hate it.
But the dry down is delicious. Smells like expensive tobacco, roses and tea and a little bit of leather. Sometimes you get a woodsy note but not much.
I would love to smell it on a man, but honestly it just gives the older, confident and rich vibe - man or woman.

Fragranooga

The oud in here is the main player on my skin, way moreso than I expected! Notably antiseptic and bandaid-y, but in a good way. I like it a lot!

shewasgarbo

The leather note is not for me - to my nose, it completely overwhelms the tea and rose; the oud is non-existent. However, if I were to wear on a spray, on my chest, the leather takes a backseat, and the rose is allowed to step forward in subtle, surprising hints, when the wind is blowing just right. The tea and the oud are harmonious and blend into a single, freshly bitter accord, though it is slightly cold. A unisex scent, leaning masculine.

MarkoPeeko

Tried pulling this off a few times, but conceded defeat and gave it to the Mrs.

Leans feminine on my skin. Don’t get me wrong, the leather smells divine. It’s the rose that doesn’t work on me.

Prefer the blue and the red versions.

VelvetTrance

Stepped out of my comfort zone with this one, because I wanted more tea scents, and I'm so glad I did. It leans quite masculine in my opinion (I would LOVE to smell this on a man). When I first sprayed it I got a lot of leather and kind of a motor oil/garage smell and I was worried I'd made a mistake but now that I'm wearing it, I love it! The deep dry down especially is just gorgeous! Just the slightest hint of sweetness, a whisper of rose, a touch of smokiness and tobacco against a beautiful blend of black tea and woods. Do give it a chance to settle into your skin before you judge. I don't think you'll be disappointed! This regular version I have is rather light, which is fine by me. I'm going to use this as a palate cleanser between fruity floral days. It's beautiful!

dmw

Au Thé Noir by Bulgari is another highly-rated scent and another disappointment. This is an almost totally forgettable, lightly aquatic feminine fragrance (again, classified as 'shared') with nothing to do with tea of any kind, except if you're being incredibly imaginative.

It's predominantly a watery rose to start with –and Lord knows that the rise of the aquatic was my least favourite development in perfumes ever– and then it flattens even more if possible: I guess that's what they are defining as 'tea' but if so it's a tea made by people who have no appreciation for tea at all, like a some flavoured tea bag dunked in luke-warm water.

Just when you've almost entirely forgotten about it, because it's so close to the skin anyway, a hint of a not very impressive oud-ish –which I suppose is an artificial oud– note emerges with a breath of patchouli.

This is like Tauer's L'Eau a day after you've been wearing it. Unimpressive.

Tulka

Everything has been already said about the scent, it’s beautiful, classy, subtle, aristocratic..
But apart from that I just have to emphasise and agree with one of the reviewers of the “intense” version, that this is by far the best quality atomiser I have come across in years.. Gives a superfine mist and you can easily “dose” the amount of juice depending how much you press and hold the sprayer. Unlike my favourite scent Jour d’ Hermes Absolu.. went through at least 4 bottles and same lousy sprayer..

LSAUG

This is the best leather and tobacco perfume I have smelled, and it is the one I have been looking for. This perfume brings back memories of my childhood. The leather accord is so well done, it truly smells like an untreated hide of leather. My Mother was a leather craftsperson and we had leather hides all over the house, she made beautiful things w/ them until arthritis claimed her hands. Believe me this is the best leather accord in perfume I have smelled. The tobacco in here is just as true and rich as the finest pipe tobacco and I was surrounded as a child by hard working men who loved to smoke a pipe in the evening to relax. I miss that smell. The rose in here adds a bit of softness and keeps the perfume from becoming too overwhelming from the richness of the leather and tobacco. The oud, and patchouli round out the perfume in the base and keep it going strong. I love this one and will be ordering a full bottle right away. Oh, medicinal oud in the dry down. This is just a stunner. Big Love! My husband wants to share the bottle w/ me and that will be fine.

Mystères du Château de Dé

Update to my review below, a year ago. At a perfume counter today I spritzed a new bottle on my skin and it's noticeably sweeter and thinner than my bottle, which isn't even old.

adelsbjm

Intense version

26 year old male. this and TF Black Orchid seem to suit my personality the best and consistently give me the feedback "you smell good". I use this one in all seasons in all settings except work where I'd find it inappropriate to wear. Projects and lasts on my skin with 1-2 sprays. Recommend, but sample first (especially men)

Alces Alces

This smells like bandaids. I love it! There are other notes, but basically I enjoy the band aid smell. Oddly comforting.

It also offers notes like the smell that wafts up when you open a bag of loose leaf Yorkshire tea. Very homey and comforting, yet elegant.😊

brokesta911

Bvlgari Eau Parfumee au The Noir (2015)- tea oud-smoke - #jacquescavallier creates this über refined perfume that starts with black tea and rose, the floral accord giving a fruity component to the perfume. Then, it transitions to the lightest oud accord you can smell, tobacco, incense on a woody and mossy base. I just hope it lasted longer, but it gives me so much pleasure to keep on re-applying anyway - that I don’t mind. Versatile and there’s no such thing as over spraying with this.

SCENT: This is a heavy, dark, and woody scent. The leather, tea, and oud notes come off so strongly on first application. I get an intense gasoline scent on opening. The rose is so subtle in this fragrance that it might as well not be there. I also got the Intense version and as the name implies, it's a more intense version of this. The leather, tea, and oud notes are amped up. However, I found that the longevity, projection, and dry down to be the same in both the intense version and this version.

DRY DOWN: There's not much of a difference from opening to dry down except maybe the gasoline note that I get disappears on dry down.

SEASONS: Fall - The dry woody notes reminds me a lot of fall. This is such an intense fragrance that I think it would do well in the colder seasons.

TIME OF DAY & SCENARIO: Dusk - I find this to be the perfect scent to wear when it's getting dark outside.

GENDER: Masculine - As soon as I caught a whiff of this, I thought this was a very masculine scent. The intensity and dry darkness of this scent pulls masculine to my nose.

LONGEVITY: 8-10 Hours on Tester Paper (only tested on paper)

PROJECTION: This has amazing projection. It can fill a room with one spray on tester paper. People will notice this scent.

PRICE: $75 CAD for 150mL

OVERALL: 4/10 - I can't wear this. It's too masculine and too dark and too strong and too intense of a scent for me. The leather and tea notes are way too overpowering. As soon as my nose gets used to the heavy masculine notes, I can finally detect the beautiful soft rose note, but it takes some time. I rated this a 4 because I can't wear it and it kinda irritates me how long the scent is staying in my room. I would say that it's not mass appealing because the scent is too divisive. It's only blind buy safe for those that want a beast mode fragrance and someone looking for a loud and obnoxious leather, tea and oud note. I regret this purchase. Its target demographic was not me. There's no need to get the intense version. They're exactly the same. The only difference is that you'll find the leather, tea, and oud notes are a little stronger in the Intense version after several hours of initial application. It's hard to notice the differences unless they're literally side by side. I found out that the sprayer on this bottle is very well made. It sprays a very fine and continuous mist. The trigger feeling is also really good on this bottle. It makes me want to try out other fragrances from this house.

discardedandroid

Quite unique, in my opinion. Not very strong at all, low duration and projection. The tea note is definitely there, and smells pretty cool. Like an inky, wispy, somewhat cold and medicinal smell. It's hard to adequately convey the scent profile, but I imagine this would be fantastic for someone who is very pale, with black hair, and a calm and introspective demeanor. Recommend.

ingeneuxo

-Opens somewhat fruity, yet clean-smelling. Perhaps a bit too 'clean' in the top notes.
-Once the top notes dry down, Leather and Tobacco notes threaten to rake the nose.
-Leans too masculine for my liking. (-)

Glencora

A blind buy after I read a review on Basenotes or...here. Can’t remember, nor can I remember what complex spiderweb of google searching got me to that page, as I don’t even think I was searching for scents at all! Clearly this was meant to be...
This one is very far out of my usual lane (citrus) and I am a little obsessed. I find it strong and long-lasting, but of course with COVID I am not going out among people very often, so I am enjoying it privately at home, regularly smelling my wrist and taking deep appreciative whiffs in a way that would look absolutely insane to anyone watching. The intro is very brief, as though tea has only a cameo role as someone who ushers you into a stable full of well-maintained horse tack. This is so smoky and deep and leathery and I never thought those would be my jam. But here we are. Thanks, random google search gremlins.

Callista25

Transparent smoky.

mister_chaz

Gorgeous fragrance. The scent is more transparent and airy somehow, not heavy or thick as the listed notes may suggest. The opening reminds me a little bit of Masque Milano Russian Tea, but The Noir is sweeter, less smokey, not as masculine.
If you are wondering what the difference is between this and the Intense version - they are very similar, actually. The Intense seems a touch sweeter and more rosy/perfumey. I think I like the original a little better.

SmellMyCheese

On a pure value scale of quality/price this might be the best rose-oud out there imho. The use of that (obviously not real, but typical) oud combo with rose is great, but rounded out nicely with a smoky tea and leather mix.

I wouldn't necessarily recommend a blind buy, it's still a strong and bold presence but if you like this darker style of fragrance this is a great pickup for the price you can get it at.

Mystères du Château de Dé

Do you know Austrian modernist designer Josef Hoffmann's Palais Stoclet near Brussels? This fragrance has the cool, wet-smokey, glossy, melancholic, clipped luxury of the Sezessionsstil and is therefore best worn by tall, skinny, chic people. The form of the bottle is a suggestion.

Update - 12/2021 - At a perfume counter today I spritzed a new bottle on my skin and it's noticeably sweeter and thinner than my bottle, which isn't even old.

shalimaraddict

I received this from a friend last Christmas. It came in a lovely gift box with two soaps, two mini lotions and shower gels, and the perfume. This is definitely a "me" scent. I like the other scents in the Eau Parfumee line from Bvlgari, but this is most like my personality and what I enjoy. It has a slight edge to it, enough to make it unique from the others in the line which are lighter in comparison. This isn't a heavy fragrance though, it is smoky and deep with tobacco, patchouli, oud, black tea, leather. Those are the notes I pick up most. Definitely worth checking out for something that is different and not in your face.

Aliciaenelespejo

I have just received my bottle and it's love at first sniff! I have blind bought this one a bit affraid because of the price and the weakness of the line. None of that is important once you smell this.
It's definitely more masculine than unisex. I'm a woman who has been using men's fragrances for a while so this is not a problem for me, but i believe it is important to know this if you are going to blind buy it.
The rose is very shy. I get mostly woods (the best quality ones) and a transparency not often found in this type of perfumes. The fact that it's not stong makes it wearable in more occasions and seasons. It's a lot stonger than the Blanc flanker.
Monsieur Cavallier, Chapeau! Once again he brought to the world an exquisite smelling criature.

kit1982

The combination of notes are well balanced.

This must be on the best leather & oud scent out there.
The leather here is very proper and the oud rhymes with it perfectly. The black tea adds a feel of lightness and transparency to it.

Definitely unisex and versatile. Can be worn all day, but best on night time.

Also the price point is very nice. A lot cheaper than niche fragrances that offer the same effect but on a much higher price.

One of Bvlgari's best imho.

I will be definitely including this in my all time favorites.

PimlicoNose

Pretty and nuanced, yes, but in the standard version (which is the only one I've tried) it is just so weak in terms of projection and longevity. Overall a soft warm smoky skin scent at best. Perhaps the Intense version is more convincing?

Andy the Frenchy

Opens with a well done fresh rosey black tea note. The it morphs into leather and patchouli, and will end with cypriol/rose/woods, not without reminding me of a subtle AdP Colonia Oud or Zegna Indonesian Oud (oh look! it's the same perfumer!). No tobacco to my nose.

In the same price range (on ebay/discounters) and if purely looking for a tea note, I'd suggest Bvlgari pour Homme, Bvlgari Black or AC Philtre Ceylan over this one. If purely looking for an animalic leather, I'd suggest Montale Aoud Cuir d'Arabie or Gucci Guilty Absolute over this one. If purely looking for a rose/woody fragrance, I'd suggest Montale Black Oud, AC Encens Jinhae, AC Rose Anonyme, Guerlain Santal Royal or AdP Colonia Oud over this one. That said, it's very nicely blended, and offers a unique buy-1-take-3 option (tea/leather/rose-woods) for who wants to keep its collection small. Its modest longevity might be forgiven since the pricing at just $50 for 5oz allows to respray, and the projection is actually good to great in the first 2 hours.
Might not be a 5-stars scent in my book, but I admit that it's not everyday that such quality is offered at decent pricing in the designer ballpark. That's why it will go from a big like to a small love.

In summary this is a leathery rose fragrance (the tea note is subtle, and just an "impression"). It's a required pruchase for small budgets/collections, but might feel redundant if one already owns several leather and rose/oud fragrances.
Colder days, unisex leaning masculine 25+

alphairone

My favorite black teas are Earl Grey and Lapsang Souchong, and Eau Parfumee au The Noir somehow evokes both.

It opens with pronounced oud and tobacco, that eventually mellows to a somewhat green, aromatic tea, still shrouded by smoke. There is a also a dark, dry, plaintive rose in the heart that provides the shadows to any semblance of brightness, while the base is mercurial, with all aforementioned elements appearing ghostly and uncertain, a bittersweet skin scent that haunts.

A 5 oz bottle is perfect for generous application, as I find that several sprays help you reach that sweet spot where the fragrance carries with you for a decent amount of time.

lostscent

Having read Luca Turin's and Tania Sanchez's books, I knew that any scents given a 4 or 5 star rating were at least worth checking out. This was rated a full FIVE stars.

Had I not smelled Acqua Di Parma's Colonia Ambra prior to this, I would have been pleasantly surprised. Instead, this was deja vu - so I personally didn't find this that special.

The funny thing is these two fragrances don't share the same notes which makes you wonder about the role "notes" play in the advertising of a fragrance.

In layman terms, here's what I get with the Eau Parfumee Noir: a very smooth, light but everlasting smell of rose-scented silky leather with a background smell of band-aids (what I presume is to represent the oud note). This could easily be mistaken for the smell of a scented men's lotion.

There's no real development here - linear throughout the life of the scent on skin.

Longevity is very good for an EDC though. 12 hours at least on my skin but it's NOT a projection monster - it's mostly a skin scent. This makes it suitable for ALL occasions and 3 out of 4 seasons (excluding the high heat of summer although you could pull it off with limited sprays).

Is this signature-scent worthy? YES
Is this a complex, multi-layered and RICH smelling fragrance? NO
Does this fragrance smell like it's made of quality? YES
Is this a blind buy worthy fragrance? NO

This is a fragrance for someone who knows exactly what they are looking for - it's a specific kind of smell and is not mass-appealing nor is it extremely challenging. Sample it first.

It's reading a dusty leather Shirley Jackson book in a top-floor bay tudor-style-window nook, slightly cracked open, as tiny rain droplets delicately stain the pages. A cup of earl grey cooling, evaporating it's essence upward, and gazing out over the wet moor as fog drifts in.

The silence speaks loudly.

It's masochism and mourning.

It's melancholy and sad.

It is the most hauntingly beautiful fragrance I have ever had the pleasure of meeting. I've searched and searched for one that invoked this aesthetic and vibe for decades.

This is my Shirley Jackson.

It's dark, it's sexy in an understated way, it's lonely but inviting.

It curls it's finger at those passing by quietly, knowing their curiosity will get the best of them to want to know what's inside this haunted house.

As this fragrance is very linear to me, I prefer to describe it with feeling and words rather than notes.

Hauntingly beautiful, Masochistic, Mourning, Melancholy, Noir, Gloomy, Supernatural, Mysterious, Gothic Literature, Archaic

It is also incredibly lovely in an entirely androgynous way. I love this for myself (and though I hate to use the term "signature", it's exactly what this is for me now), but I would also love to smell this on my husband as well.

AJ1515

Really excellent. It is definitely a tea scent, but it is blended to the point where I don't get the individual leather or oud or tobacco notes. I just get this dark, herbal, sweet, brooding tea scent that lasts close to the skin for a good 6+ hours.

This is my kind of cologne!

Edit: I am shocked by how long this lasts. I can still smell a hint of it 24+ hours after my last application. Something in this just sticks to my skin.

Aguirre

Interesting.

"The Noire" is a beautiful and elegant tea scent designed over a very fresh and clean leather, a clever woody oud-patchouli accord, and a soapy floral aura.

Many would have gone head over heels had this been labeled as "Cuir et Thé" by Maison Christian Dior or Frederic Malle.

Versatile, unisex, likeable, different, and modern. Very nice!

Coquita

Just tried this today and I enjoyed it a lot. On my skin, it opens with strong oud and tobacco, but then these notes tame a bit and beautifully blend with the rose and the tea. It reminds me a lot of Dior's Midnight Poison, only juicier and less patchoulish (this shouldn't be a surprise, as both are Cavallier's perfumes).
The only downside for me is that I seem to become anosmic to it after an hour or so, even though the scent is still there, as others have complimented my perfume. Based on this, I'd say it lasts about 4h with an arms-length projection.

This one is strange, but it totally grew on me. As another reviewer mentioned, this does have a weird bandage accord, like the fresh glue on a good cloth band-aid. As odd as this is sounds, I actually like it.

The rose, leather, and black tea notes are most dominant, but the way they're blended lends an almost aquatic feel to everything, a watery shimmer of sophistication.

I got this as an 8ml travel spray from a subscription box and I can see myself using it up over time when I'm craving something offbeat, unisex, perfect for embracing the sweet melancholy of a misty day.

Hugo Montez

Well, I have to say that this one surprised me. I thought this would be a very easy to wear with no Oud in here but, surprisingly, this has a little bit of a skanky Oud in the back of it, which is quite good to be honest.

When you spray this you'll be able to smell the rose with some bergamot and a shy tea note. Love this unisex fresh opening! 10min later the tea will dominate the fragrance and the leather accord appears. There's a good accord here. Like the one you'll find in Black from the same brand or even Midnight in Paris but without the rubber note. Excellent!
The Oud is there basically since the tea starts to shine. Is giving a skanky yet sexy vibe from this and later on, the fragrance turns a little bit yummy. It's complex and has all the three stages very well achieved! The Oud isn't potent but isn't that synthetic so I really appreciate it. Bravo Mr. Jacques Cavallier! Heavenly!

The performance is not great. It's suave but I love it that way. It's comforting and I love to wear it on a breezy spring/summer night.

The price is very adequate and you can find a 75ml bottle for less than 50€. The quality is great too!

I recommend it to everyone that likes Tea, rose and a tiny touch of Oud.

If anyone is confused that is because the picture is of the intense version and the picture with the box is also the intense version. The regular version is with a white label and box. I hope this helps somebody.

I love both versions but if I had to pick, I would pick the intense version and that will be what I buy a FB of first. I already have the Rouge including the body lotion.

This regular version will be after the intense. I enjoy the smokiness with a bit of rose and wood (oud) peeking out. I get no patch in this and the scent doesn't stay around long enough to have much change or depth. I get an hour and a half to two max if I spray pretty heavy (use a whole sample) but it might be better when I buy a FB and get the body lotion also.

taureanrage69

This is the smokiest fragrance I currently have, and while it's very interesting and unique to my nose, I can get turned off on it easily if I put on too much by accident. With the leathery/smoky/black tea factor, I do think a lot of one of my favorite uncles, who always had a pipe. I grew up smelling that pipe and while this perfume is cleaner than that smell, it's dank enough to remind me of that, which is a pleasant memory. Definitely not a sexy scent and not something I want to wear often as I tend to get moody with it and want to wash it off. I think I'd prefer smelling this on someone other than myself, but will keep it around to compare with others as I continue to add to my oudh collection.

kharisma23

I blind bought this and I didn’t liked it at the beginning, gave it to my man and recently I steal few drops almost daily from him and I like it, dark and smooth not sweet perfect for a pick me up

Tlund

I too, went out and bought this because of the review by Luca Turin. I usually agree on most of what he says, but he does have an affinity toward smokey fragrances that I do not share. I do however like Magnolia, black tea and leather. I thought they would come through more in this scent, but they just lend themselves to the dry, airy quality of the aroma.
There is some kind of inner sadness that all the Bvlgari fragrances seem to have in their construction. Even the tropical omnia scents seem to try to cover up a deep melancholy feeling by adding a passion fruit or guava top note, like a person with depression trying to wear a brave face to not let others see the pain they are feeling inside - Don't get me wrong, there are days when I am feeling under the weather emotionally and still have to go out and face the world. Those are the days I go for a Bvlgari fragrance.
My favorite Bvlgari scent is Soir. I seem to reach for it in the spring time on cloudy rainy days. I never want to be without my Soir. I just started my third bottle, and for a person that owns 100 fragrances, you know I must love it.
Au The Noir takes this to a whole new level for me; it's almost depressing. I picture a washed up old jazz singer wearing a wilted, dyeing magnolia in his lapel or in her hair, chain smoking cheap cigarettes. This scent does not make a person want to smile, just the opposite. But somewhere deep inside the structure of this fragrance is a little sparkle. Still not a smile, but maybe a slight raised eyebrow, letting you know there is still a glimmer of hope left.
It has grown on me since my first spray that I wanted to immediately go wash off, but still not one I want to reach for often. I prefer something more upbeat, more colorful that this black and white film noir cologne.

Nobody does abstract, contemplative fragrances better than Jacques Cavallier. His early work, from M7 and Rive Gauche pour Homme to Feu d'Issey stands alongside the giants of 20th century perfumery.

Eau Parfumee au The Noir (EPaTN) may be his greatest achievement.

This is a flawlessly executed olfactory sculpture. The medium, of course, is wood. And Cavallier's genius here is to make the entire composition so polished, so clean, and yet also so challenging.

More than any fragrance I can remember, I find myself obsessively the mysteries and contradictions in EPaTN. It is deeply bitter, yet honeyed. Totally masculine, yet unlike any other masculine fragrance on the market today. It is mainstream, but more daring than 99.9% of the niche offerings. Wow.

This is the scent of a clean woodshop, the private domain of a master artist and craftsman. Thank you, Monsieur Cavallier for bringing EPaTN into the world.

NB FRAGRANTICA STAFF:

The main picture for this perfume is actually for the Eau de Cologne Intense formula (Frag perfume #52922) with the GOLD label. The perfume on this page Eau Parfumee au The Noir actually has a WHITE LABEL with gold writing; it is pictured in Picture No.1 to the right of main bottle entry picture.

I received this on Christmas Eve this year (2018), along with SIX other Bvlgari perfumes/colognes from four of their collections. I almost had my Dear One order me the Extreme version (literally twice as much for the same mL's) but after smelling this cologne am grateful I opted for the lower concentration.

I have yet to do a full wearing (once sniffed on mouillette strip and once walking through a mist) but this is NOT what I expected or osmagined. It's unlike the other tea scents in the novel (for this genre, anyway) addition of 2/3 of a Mukhallat formula-oud & rose in addition to tobacco and patchouli! I want to say these overpower the smoky Lapsang Suchong black tea but instead they are blended in such a masterful way as to create something breathtaking and bold yet still chic calm and collected.

Each of these ingredients in Maitre Cavallier's "the noir" recipe bring out some other inherently interesting facet of each other while still maintaining an overall harmony that's utterly graceful while emanating a shadowy exotic mystique. Nowhere near "watery" or tea-like this is an inky infusion of warmth blended with a decoction of aquilaria some honeyed rose petals before being stirred by a black vanilla bean-which was not included. I do not know what type of agarwood was used here but it's fruitier and smokier not barnyard or medicinal. I believe a similar note was used in whole or part by CREED in their Royal Oud.

So yes, it's designer-but it's pretty damn good. No, it's not your typical tea-centric fragrance (this House has enough of those already)-it is however a delightful dark and devilish brew. To me it almost comes across as Gothic with the seductive rose and smoky sweet oud cradled by tobacco (light Turkish or blossom I'd wager) and more green than woody patchouli leaves. One sniff it's a mukhallat chiffon...the next sniff its a gentlemanly woody aromatic...next it has become this softly smoke-infused leather and tea accord that still wafts an oriental mélange fading softly in the background. This is superb!

Sillage: very good
Longevity: excellent
Overall: 4.25/5

Despite the fact I acquired this from an online discount retailer (who has flashing ads at the bottom of perfume pages) for a quite reasonable price of $42 US; it is something I would pay retail price for-it's that god. If, like myself, you dig perfumes that are: dark, flowery, bold, smoky, exotic and well done you should do yourself a favor and test this. It surprised the hell out of me...

I was so "over" the whole saffron-rose-oud thing from the last few years. This did that in a completely groovy way while incorporating the tea theme, another craze I mistakenly thought was never going to produce anything new or exciting. Without giving up one iota of quality this delivers a Middle Eastern/Oriental vibe while being neither heavy handed nor too minimalist. This is a rich and vibrant tapestry woven flawlessly; but, then again it IS a Cavallier-Belletrud. I figured I would respect this for its craftsmanship and move onto the next wan vapid perfume-by-numbers the mass markets clamor for so vehemently. SO far beyond that, The Noir lends both translucent warmth and intense aromas as it steams and steeps.

I osmagine this is much more versatile than most tea scents as it can be worn in the winter (day) or spring and summer (evening). It's a refreshingly light take on an often aromatic and dense dark genre making it a great choice for warmer spring days and cool summer nights.

I can't wait to rock this on a melancholy cool damp spring day...

In the second half of 2015, the collection is joined by the new fragrance with aroma of black tea - Eau Parfumee au The Noir. The composition is signed by perfumer Jacques Cavallier..
Sillage is soft and longevity is 5-6 hours, which is quite good for a cologne I would say. :)
The correct notes:
Top Notes: Rose Absolute - Bergamot Essence
Heart Notes: Black Tea Accord - Magnolia Essence
Base Notes: Oud Wood - Patchouli

This is an interesting take on tea. Smells very refreshing, yet elegant.

Smell is similar to Gucci gucci guilty absolute!

I love all the reviews :3
I'm so glad that this one is similar in style to sadly discontinued Black.
Some ingredients or a combination of is set to resemble rubberish feel from Black.
I also get a faint rose scent fluttering above this rubber, leathery, oud undercoat, which gives it oriental vibe.
Like Black, it is more pour homme than femme, for people who like traditional gender divided perfumery.
All these ingredients could make a super thick concoction, but no, this scent is ultra light despite it's dark character.
Shame about longevity which is two hours at best, but that's just a Bvlgari trademark. I guess the Earth would shatter if they made something that lasts on skin.

Renatafrascassi

Tried it during my ongoing quest after perfect "cha" perfume. Dismissed it because it would be too extravagant for me to wear avant-garde perfume, or at least to wear one for men (I am of the opposite sex). Although it could be proclaimed unisex. It is very fine, very quiet, very subtle and very neutral, somehow subdued and unobtrusive, although present. I think the best description for this perfume would be "presence at the verge of absence". Presume there is great craft needed from someone who would be able to create such perfume. Well, these days I saw that it got 5 stars in LT newest guide. So if you are into non-conventional perfumes, go ahead

morkant

Is it a oud scent? A tea one? A leather one? It's all of these things, smoothly combined so no edges show. Nothing "jumps out" at you, so at first I was a bit puzzled by this one, but now I'm addicted. It's deep and serious but at the same time very wearable and fresh, a rare combination. Sometimes it's very tea like and astringent, sometimes rosey-lemony, sometimes leather, other times its almost like a straightforward oud scent. Fantastic!

DryDownTown

Personally I love this. I too received the Emirates business class Bvlgari wash kit. Unfortunately I wasn't on the flight but when my parents flew the cabin crew were kind enough to give them a spare for me on the return leg.

Anyway - Tea? Maybe not. I detect mostly light leather with some tobacco and perhaps soap. It reminds me of a classic dusty barber shop scent. It sits close to the skin and smells very clean (old school clean). The difference being the leathery scent is pronounced. It's not just a desirable dry down after the main scent fades, it is the showpiece. It's how I want all classic barber shop scents to sit.

The clean scent is utterly addictive, I just can't stop sniffing my wrist. Perhaps because it is so light. Sometimes I just want leather but I don't want the heavy overbearing scent. This is the answer. You can wear this with the confidence that it's not going to get up anybody's nose. A great all rounder. It does work in the winter but I much prefer it as a daytime scent in warmer (but not baking hot) weather.

Just to add - something many may raise an eyebrow at - the scent reminds me of a dried down Dior Fahrenheit, just weaker and far less sweet. I imagine if you took the petrol out of Fahrenheit you'd end up with something like this.

The body lotion is also excellent. Almost as strong as the cologne. In fact after the cologne has dried down, it does have the subtleness of a body lotion scent. Perhaps that is why the lotion also works very well.

isabella_andromeda

I'm not great at determining exact notes yet, but I can say that on me it smells very dark with something mobile and green underneath. Smells wildly different depending on what it's sprayed on and where you are in relation to it. This, I think, is what makes it an all-time favourite.

trabuquera

Rose + oud yet AGAIN but done in an unusually transparent, watery way - and I don't mean that as a bad thing - it's not my preferred treatment but it's carried off here with some style. You definitely know it's an EdC - the rose is light and dewy rather than velvety-soft, and the oud is the slightly astringent, antiseptic type rather than anything richer or stinkier. And there are no oriental-style spices in there to beef things up either. I couldn't detect any tea specifically but maybe it was just there punching up the whole tannic-sourish greenish side.

So it's a bit wispy and airy overall, yet there's a brave sort of clarity and some real punch to the oud. Certainly distinctive (without being weird) and classy (without feeling opulent - just low-key quality). On skin this seemed a little weak on me but on textiles it's a beast - a cotton sweater still *reeked* of it 24 h later, and with the oud even stronger and darker than before and the patchouli beginning to properly simmer a bit. Not really for me as I prefer a rose/oud mix to have a proper rounding-out with resins and spices and all sorts, to make a lusher, warmer sort of scent, but if you love rose, oud, or both, and want something specifically fresh it could make you very happy. Overpriced at full retail, but seems to be available at honking discounts which make it very good value for money if it rings your bell.

This may not (really) be a review--more of a series of statements.

1. This was my very first blind buy, at Marshalls (no material connection),and roughly half of list price. For the same price, they also had 'Rouge'. I was able to (almost) run to the nearby Ulta *just* before they closed and smell that one, and subsequently ruled it out.

2.I made the purchase before reading ALL of the reviews. I might have held off, had I gotten to La Dame de Noir's prescient entreaty to "test before buying" with this one.

3. I realized that I could return/exchange it, if need be. I hate returning anything, but for the price and based on the scent family, I decided to risk it.

4. I actively wanted to like it. I did not dislike it. I love horses, and the smell of stables, and think that Silvery nailed it with the "Stall and hay scent" observation.

5.I gave it both a decently generous application and real dry-down time. It definitely changed over time on me, mellowing to something that I could *almost* see myself wearing. Almost, on my budget, sadly doesn't work.

6. I found it really interesting, albeit in a sort of confused, cocker-spaniel-head-tilt kind of way. (As an aside, I had a similar experience of confusion with Piment Brulant. That one ultimately sorted itself into my "wearable, more so if layered" pile. Mixed with Commodity Moss, it's like a magic olfactory salad.)

7. This whole experience is a delightful dance with uncertainty. I'm indebted to those of you with the both the faculty and inclination to put your observations so eloquently into words. I'm at once amazed at and intimidated by your reviews. :)

edited to add:

It is likely that this ultimately unsuccessful blind buy experience has saved me from the disappointment and frustration of a similar online, no-returns experience.

I was gifted this as a parting gift from a wealthy Qatar family who traveled to my work for their daughters TMS treatments for the month. I remember her dad wearing this as it was pretty strong but not too awful, as there was a certain sense of exoticness in it. One spray directly applied is extremely strong, but it mellows down into a sexy floriental with my body's ph. I can see myself wearing this for a hot date night in.

Meels

A very interesting complex fragrance. It has the neutrality that stops it being too floral and it's not too dry. Warm and mysterious

syarul

I've got this 5 ml miniature from my aunt, who travel from UK to Malaysia using Emirates, business class. They give a pouch full of Bvlgari products, including wet tissue, lotion, toothbrush set & mini mirror.

This scent remind me of Gucci Guilty Absolute. It have some Dettol smell, just like Guilty Guilty Absolute, only lighter. Not a fan of this. I can't detect any tea notes, only prominent leather & some bitter tobacco. Pass.

Au the Noir smells like skin...just got out of a warm shower and moisturised with a very lightly scented generic moisturiser skin. More importantly, this smells very salty to me...not a fan of the scent so i'm not mad at the short longevity

tranthanhlongsgd

I like it but not in love with it. Prefer Bvlgari Eau the Parfumee Au The Rouge over this.
NOT LONG LASTING, LOW SILLAGE. 7/10

Mando

I really like this one. I get a lot of patchouli and a hint of the signature tea note of the original. I also get a hint of oud and rose. It's whisper soft and does dry down to a skin scent but it's beautiful. This scent would have to be re-applied throughout the day though but "Who cares?" (at least, I don't)

I have every intention wearing this a lot this upcoming summer. I really really like this offering. I adore Eau Parfumee Au The Verte a lot as it is.
I can see a bit of a similarity of Bvlgari Black to this one, slightly due to the oud note. Very well done.

This really lasts if you DRENCH yourself in it. It's quite beautiful. I LOVE IT.

bfactor

All I can smell is oud and some bitter burnt cigar. I cannot detect any tea?

gazzaz

this is by no means an oud....to me it smells like a lit cigarette without the annoying smoke and softened with the rose. it is the mix of tea tobacco and rose that dominate this scent in my opinion....

tbm473

On first sniff, it smells heavily of wood and chypre, but it really develops and evolves over a few hours on the skin. The dry down is hard to pin down: it continually shifts from black tea, to oud, to rose, back to tea again. I agree with Tiwalii's description - it's sexy and warm, like being wrapped up in a cashmere throw sitting on a leather couch in front of a fire.

andy812

Wow!!!!!! band-aid oud/tea/leather. All mixed sooooo well. The best scent from bvgari ever.

Silvery

STALL and hay scent it is! It's because of the interesting combination of tobacco and leather notes I think. They're dominating the fragrance, a hint of tea and oud can be detected but I can't feel the other notes like patch and rose. I smelled i on paper, wonder what it's like on skin.

mothwings

See Tiwalii's review for the real notes. This is nicely mysterious but there is something off-putting about the combination of notes that keeps me from enjoying it fully. It does smell leathery and ever so slightly fruity in a weird way. I really cannot detect the tea. Overall it's just not for me.

FabulouslyLazy

I’m not sure this is primarily a tea scent and if it’s true there’s no leather in it I wonder where the leather vibe comes from. To me Eau Parfumee au The Noir is very dry and…unusual?!? It kinda smells like a leather-handled straw bag carrying a black tea box, some flowers wrapped in paper — white thick recycled paper with its own peculiar smell — and tobacco leaves. Oud is a rather faint presence and together with tobacco creates the smokiness in the background. All in all, bit too ‘polished’ and ‘tamed’ for my tastes.

Calvini

Great stuff! It's like a tribute to the original Bvlgari Black and the whole tea collection (The one to end it all)! It's a VERY leathery (+smoky) black tea with some rose and minimal "oud"; I don't know how some can perceive it as a rose-oud dominant scent because it isn't (although it has a "touch" of Zegna's Indonesian Oud made by the same nose)..

To be honest, none of the tea fragrances from this brand smells like the said tea except maybe Rouge and this (while The Bleu is also very tea-like, it's supposed to be Chinese Oolong, which bears no resemblance), so you can either single this one out for no good reason or simply move-on to Jo Malone's new Rare Teas :)

lovescully

I'm with viridian on this latest Eau Parfumee release from Bvlgari. As much as I love Vert (Extreme), Rouge and Blanc, I will not be adding Noir to my collection.

It's a perfectly presentable EDC style fragrance, but not at all what I was expecting from the notes or description. The description of a "deep and oriental" fragrance is in my mind a tad misleading. Although it's got an oriental sensibility to it thanks to the combination of rose and (a somewhat synthetic) oud, it's far from deep and in contrast is rather fleeting. Even the patchouli seems to be missing in action!

The darkness or 'Noir' comes only from the woody aspects as I couldn't detect any discernible black tea note as listed above. The fleeting presence of leather and tobacco couldn't save this for me.

Had this been all about black tea (as suggested), rather than oud and 'woody' notes this could have been an absolute stunner. As it is I just can't get enthused by Bvlgari's latest Eau Parfumee. I'm yet to test Bleu and I'm hoping that it will not disappoint.

viridian

I've tried Noir a couple of times this past week to get a fair impression of this scent. I love and wear Vert, Blanc and Bleu but this will not join them in my collection. It's a real fork in the road and to me doesn't feel part of the Eaux collection. I can't detect any tea in the mix - it's just another strong, smokey, spicy, oud fragrance. Not what I was expecting at all. I'd hoped for a dark, dry, malty black tea maybe with a bit of bergamot like a really top quality Earl Grey. Maybe that's next? Eaux Gris? Yes please!

Tiwalii

The correct notes:
Top Notes: Rose Absolute - Bergamot Essence
Heart Notes: Black Tea Accord - Magnolia Essence
Base Notes: Oud Wood - Patchouli

This is an interesting take on tea. Smells very refreshing, yet elegant.

It feels like sitting in a room with dark wood panels, in a vintage Chesterfield sofa, with an elegant, english porcelaine cup filled with fragrant quality Earl Grey in your hands. On the table in front of you there is a crystal vase filled with freshly picked roses and magnolias from the garden.

It's a cologne type of scent, so it is not very strong, and therefore the oud is not very harsh either. It just gives the scent that dark wood and leather feeling, and also adds a soft smokyness that's barely there.

The heart of the scent, which blooms with an amazingly rich rose and magnolia combo, reminds me a lot about Green Tea Camellia from Elizabeth Arden. For me that is a good thing, because it's one of my tea favourites.

I really like it!

Sillage is soft, and longevity is 5-6 hours on my skin, which is quite good for a cologne I would say. :)

Houdini4

Woah! This is one of the most unique things I've smelled in a while, I can honestly say I haven't come across something quite like The Noir. I was encouraged to try it in store at first on a card and couldn't really get to grips with it? Having worn it now I can't say I'm any the wiser?
Contrary to some of the thoughts expressed below, I get loads of tea from this fragrance especially in the opening but undoubtedly continuing throughout. Bvlgari do have a bit of a love affair with tea and I have to say I really love the original Men's fragrance, without actually owning a bottle. (I must put that right one day) The tea in this is not typical, black tea but much more oriental, dark fragrant but still with a metallic edge. Tobacco and oud (apparently) give this strange concoction a smokey depth which further adds to the tea, and with a hint of rose in there this fragrance is full to the brim with interest. I get a patchouli base which comes on more in the drydown but is yet again adding to the contradictory, clean meets dirty, natural vibes of this whole perfume.
I could talk and talk about this fragrance and despite my seemingly glowing appraisal, at the end of the day I came to the conclusion...I don't completely like The Noir. It has some properties I just can't abide and I'd even go as far to say the dry down gets even worse but as a perfume composition, I think it's truly excellent and something I'd love to grow on me. So Bravo Jacques Cavallier! I'm even that much of an adventurer now that I kinda want to add this to my collection, rather than sticking to safe stuff which ticks wear-ability boxes for me. I want to be challenged and this juice did that.
Performance was pretty good too and the silage was a silent creeper, that keeps letting you know it's there. Fascinating stuff, I'd encourage anyone to try this.

DerangedGoose

A very interesting break from the rest of the tea line, this is a markedly darker and thicker perfume than the others. The most prominent notes are Rose and Leather, to the point where the tea note is very difficult to pick out. This is, however, supposed to be black tea, and so the note is likely tightly integrated into the tobacco and patchouli (themselves also playing a distant background role). Thankfully, this is not a fruity floral or a cloying, sandbagged oriental. It is a clear, forward leaning leather; perhaps ostensibly chypre-like (if we are trying to fit this into a category).

The overall effect is like that of new gloves; a very smooth, slightly powdery leather. The soft rose has a feminine feel, but the bitterness of the leather prevents it from being a fully feminine perfume. It smells like the kind of "house signature" a luxury goods manufacturer would perfume their womens line with; the kind of fragrance women would step into the store just to smell, would covet for as long as their new purchase would give it, and would be desperate to own despite how jealously guarded it is by the house (and not sold as a retail fragrance).

There is not much in the way of evolution; the leather becomes more powdery and the rose stays on top throughout the 8 hour lifespan. Sillage and projection is on the moderate to heavy side.

Those who enjoy Dsquared Potion Royal Black are encouraged to try this (and even those that dont). By the standards of the community, this may be considered slightly masculine, but any rose prominent scent is always somewhat feminine to my nose, and as such I would say this is firmly unisex.

However, I think it may find its truest home on a very sultry, smoldering woman.

acidnbase

A deep and elegant oriental scent which focuses on black tea and accentuated with tobacco, rose and oud giving it a Middle Eastern vibe.. It is a well-balanced concoction and although it comes in cologne intense concentration, the performance is satisfactory.. I would indulge myself of this scent at any given time.. Please do yourself a favor and try it if you get the chance..

Hassan Nasrallah

its an adorable perfume , far from the heaviness of oud , it is oriental yes , but soft romantic and shining .
Tobacco & tea leaves are here to soother the strength of oud and rose .
Likely this perfume is the mix of most matching ingredient together in a well balanced proportions .
i loved it really from the 1st sniff .
Merci Bvlgary , Merci Mr.Jacques Cavallier .

querelle

Unfortunately it is not a resurrection of Bvlgari Black, it's just another oud perfume for a very specific clientele. Disappointing, to say the least..

skriszke

Resurrection of Bvlgari Black would be very welcome here, because I cannot buy that on the Holland market anymore. Although the new The Noir does not have the vanilla note. But tobacco makes me very excited, can’t wait to try this!

Sounds sooo perfect!
