Mixed Emotions by Byredo is a Woody Aromatic fragrance for women and men. Mixed Emotions was launched in 2021. Top notes are Black Currant and Mate; middle notes are Tea and Violet Leaf; base notes are Birch and Papyrus.

"We're in the business of bottling up emotions. I hope that people read the label and identify with that sentiment in its simplest form, and then find something deeper to relate to: the juxtaposition between the familiar and the unfamiliar."
- Ben Gorham, founder and creative director of Byredo.

Drawing on Byredo’s philosophy of translating fragmented memories and abstract ideas into scents, the new edition Mixed Emotions represents an olfactory sketch of our current, collective state of mind.

Comfortable notes of maté tea and the sharp sweetness of black currant lead to the heart of soothing Ceylon tea and the petite accord of violet leaves. The wood base provides “comfort” with notes of papyrus and birch.

Mixed Emotions is available in 50 and 100 ml Eau de Parfum.

God I love this!! Fruity, green, smoky, dark and fresh all at the same time. Definitely not for everyone but 100% for me! Well done Byredo.

nevertheless123

On my skin, I get a lot of passionfruit and pineapple. Unfortunately I also get a strong hint of cat piss, so I had to actually wash it off me with soap.

Mixed Emotions isn't a crowd pleaser. Nor is it meant to be- I mean, it's in the name. In the bottle and on first spray, it's a little unsettling- violet leaf comes across as consistently sharp on my skin, and that plus the cool-spicy-leafy mate and blackcurrant does give a camphorous, bittersweet, medicinal impression. If you've got bad experiences with cough drops, you're probably gonna hate it until the dry down. I think it's artsy and fun. And the drydown makes the effort of figuring out that first impression so worth it for me- after ten or fifteen minutes, it's all herbal-spicy-tobacco staining that aged, papery papyrus base that, imo, Byredo does really well. It's wacky, but weirdly addicting- definitely a perfume that asks you to engage critically. I'm really into it.

Basman0

While in a parfum shop i sprayed a bunch on my arm. Some heavy hitters, and this one.
This was me and my girlfriends favourite.

I always wanted more fruity masculine perfumes and this fits the bill because of the birch.
I also am a big fan of red fruits so this just really is up my alley.
I'm glad i found something that can be my signature scent that hardly anyone is wearing

Zinalouna

Mixed emotions ca décrit bien le parfum je trouve que ça sent le vieux sirop pour la toux mélanger avec une odeur de cendrier désolé mais je passe

Tshahb

Horrid, clashing notes. Vomity bleurgh.

I'm sorry I might have to PASS on this one. I barely have dislikes on perfumes however right after the moment trying mixed emotions it gave me a headache right away. I was expecting more of the black current and tea but it felt like harsh nauseating scents, very unpleasant. Thank god I got to try this perfume before I actually bought it without trying. It is risky to buy a full bottle just reading the comments and the notes.

Mixed Emotions is an apt name for this fragrance because it’s clear everyone is smelling something different. IMO this is Byredo’s worst fragrance, by a fat margin. To my nose, it smells like a piercing, mentholated, red cough syrup. Every time I smell this fragrance, I can almost taste it. It takes me back to my childhood when I would feign an illness to stay home from school and my Mom would give me a spoonful Robitussin and I would want to toss my cookies at the smell and taste of the thick red medicine 🤢 Maybe I hate Mixed Emotions because of my memory association to Robitussin, but IMO, this fragrance is diabolical. Who the hell wants to smell like cough syrup?!

Babs67

Mixed Emotions…what were they thinking when formulating this fragrance? I get strong currant and smoked Kielbasa in an ashtray filled with butts. This is a total NO for me!

achatina

I loveMixed emotions. My nose gets the most amazing mix of blackcurrant and tea, with time it gets sweeter and sweeter and the two notes never become one. It is not a safe buy and was not meant to please the crowds. It is a bit like a magical forest at dawn. One of the most unusal scents I own, I am on my second bottle.

Gingka

smells like a cold hot dog.

cloudk

I tried a sample of this yesterday and can still smell a faint woodiness on my wrist this morning. It originally smells smoke-y, and a bit like santal 33, plus smokiness. I can still smell that similarity between the two in the morning. I was a fan of the scent of santal 33, but it become so popular I smelled it everywhere, this would be a good alternative if you want a more unique scent. I'd wear this more in colder weather, as it's bold and heavy- personally.

Similarien

I hated it at first, now I love it. It opens with a lot of tea.. I almost was making me think of cigarettes. Then it transforms into a sweey jelly. I got a sample and used it a lot becasue I wanted to get rid of it asap. Now it’s one of my favourite scents. Increadibly fitting name

Ba2siK

I get a peach & mint smell from it. I don't like

dglightblue

The Black currant slaps you in the face.stright away.. it teeters on pissy between the layers, uts sour and sweet all at once .. along with that violet leaf (had a Goutal do the same thing once) its so sharp.. after a couple hours the fruit and woods do what happens with Nomade and World its that sorta vibe..

No direct smoke or leather for me,but the dry down is ll that.. far more palatable than the opening and first hour.

Lom

It smells to me like heavy cassis over a background that reminds me of Slow Dance. I cannot handle the smell of cassis as a main note. It smells very Byredo, which is good enough, but this perfume makes me nauseous.

SarahLoves

Smells fruity at first, dries down to cat urine. Wore it once, wondered how the cat urine got on my sweater afterwards (without having a cat). Coworker wore it as well and the overpowering cat urine dry down scared her as well.

billiedenise

Mixed Emotions gives me mixed emotions.

I hated it, then I loved it. When I first smelled it in the bottle it smelled really smoky, like a campfire. But sprayed on the skin is smells like sweet berries and jam with something very medicinal… I keep smelling tea tree oil. To me it smells like a fruity, dark, herbal, medicinal, smoky, fall scent.

I hated it on first smell, but liked it on my skin, but I’m not sure that I’d want to wear it often, and yet I could not stop smelling my wrist over and over while wearing it.

I can’t decide how I feel about it, but will prob buy a travel size so I can continue figuring it out, haha.

UPDATE:
I bought a 5ml and have been wearing it more often. I have decided I love this scent… its such a wonderful mood booster throughout the day when you get whiffs of the berries on your skin. Plus it lasts all day on your skin and even longer on your clothes.

Gillzathrillza

I bought this during lockdown and the nostalgia it brought me when working from home was so intense that I couldn’t wear it at first but I absolutely love it.

It’s all woody, smoky dark currants, mixed together. It doesn’t last for eternity but it’s strong enough. It’s also a compelling sniffer - you’ll get wafts of it from your neck and arms for hours. I agree with the review below which links it to Lush Junk.

For me, it always makes me think of being little and snuggling into my dad’s wool cardigan right after he’d smoked a tobacco pipe. The image is so strong. I don’t even know that he ever smelled like this scent but the olfactory association is wildly vivid. It takes me right back.

They nailed the naming.

AUyliong

Between this and Oud Immortel this frag house feels like it's literally mining my childhood for scent inspiration. This is only the second Byredo I've smelled but just as the first time with OI, it took me right back.

It feels like they went to the exact middle and high schools that I went to and scraped every musky nook and cranny they could find and recreated the scents.

Immediately upon spraying I'm getting more mate than blackcurrant. Eventually the mate gives way and let's the blackcurrant come through. This is a nice blackcurrant. It's not too saccharine like in Tiffany's godawful Rose Gold. This smells like Nestea Iced Tea actually.

Oh wait, I think that's the tea note already. Will update as this scent develops. I'm not getting any violet leaf at all. I see there's birch and papyrus in the base so I expect this to eventually smell like the trees and library of my high school.

I can see why this house is very popular with people my age (millennials) and younger (gen z) this house is literally bottling nostalgia for people like me. I kinda wonder if Byredo's perfumers were weird loners back in school because they seem to be drawing their inspiration from the oddest and muskiest corners of a typical American school.

UPDATE: I think Byredo took the route of having one dominant note and one supporting note in each stage. I'm guessing the blackcurrant was the slight sourness I detected in the background of the mate during the opening. The violet leaf was undetectable. I'm guessing that was just there to back up and amplify the tea note. As for the base, I got a little birch and, I guess, some papyrus. It's hard to detect notes by this stage because this frag is unfortunately pretty fleeting.

poirot303

The scent from a cast iron pot filled with simmering wild, jammy berries over a wood campfire rushes up and blasts you in the face = Mixed Emotions.

Duckling

On paper, I should love this. In real life, it’s a confusing mess.

Anabanana08

So surprising to me that someone will not think of this as sweet and fruity, I didn't look at the notes before sampling and it opened with pure blackcurrant, it as instantly recognisable. The berry more than the leaf. Then immediately violet and later some tea. I do think it has a lot of woodiness and smokiness but on my it opened up later. Overall this is too sweet for me, but I like it.
I do think it has something so similar with Indigo Nest, however Mixed Emotions is indeed less sweet than that. It's definitely better.

Faeriecoma

This smells like those fruity blunt wraps. And how I imagined Twin Peaks to smell. I will never wear this. R.I.P

feuermaiden

I'm in complete agreement with the reviewer below me that said there was no sweetness in this. There's none. I really have no clue why Fragrantica lists "fruity" as the top accord either - I don't get any of the blackcurrant. There's really not much tea to be had here, either.

This is straight woods. Birch, papyrus, a little smokiness, but it comes off a little BBQ. Tiny bit of herbalness from the mate. Not my vibe, not worth the money. I enjoyed Sundazed, Bal D'Afrique, Mojave Ghost a lot more.

FragnaForever

Smells odd when you smell your hand but wearing it on your neck it smells amazing give it a chance!

yuvahl

after months of searching for places to smell byredo fragrances in my country (which was extremely difficult) i by chance without searching came across a whole collection of what i think has to be every single fragrance from the line.

i tried three different fragrances on my body that day, Bal D’afrique, Gypsy Water and Mixed Emotions.

the one that stood out the most was Mixed Emotions, not only did it last 8 hours, the scent itself was this really fruity scent with a base of leather and woodyness to it. personally, i dislike fragrances that smell of leather, but this time it was just done right in my opinion. by the time i realized how much i liked this fragrance i had already purchased two fragrances that day so i’ll probably get my hands on this later down the line.

highly recommend

Vertsu

There's no sweetness in this one. It's only woody; basically smells like birch, pine tree sap and the same smoky smell that hits your face when opening a bag of fresh mate herb. Its very well balanced and the smell of mate comes somehow after the trees. Smells exactly like in the forests of north Europe (where I live) in the summer. Has a performance of about 4 hours. In warm weather vanishes rapidly. It's a good perfume for sure, but there's no reason for this to cost so much.

lefterisparasyris

Finally, a perfume truly loyal to its name as it literally gives you mixed emotions! One one hand, you've got the fruity black current and some fresh green elements. On the other, you've got some bitterness coming from mate and the tea. It's a peculiar combination of things that change over time. At times, it'll feel like you're in a plantation, others times, it'll feel cold or even vegetal and then there'll be moments where you could swear there's a bit of leather but there isn't... It's an odd fragrance for the bold and eccentric. I'll give this to Byredo. Do I want to smell like that everyday? No Do I want to smell like that sometimes? Yes. Do I like it? Yes. Do I not like it sometimes? Yes. Mixed emotions. Here you go...

celine.vasquez

It’s a No for me. I get cough syrup in an ashtray in the opening and that’s enough for me, i had do scrub off. I got a sample of this because i enjoy dear polly by Vilhelm and saw it as recommended.

FragnaForever

Almost threw away the sample after i smelled it but after a few wears i really enjoy it! The only reason i wanted to was because it smelled like cat piss and bbq in the opening but it slowly fades away and it’s actually one of my guilty pleasures! definitely try before you buy! Dry down smells like sweet fruit and hints of wood and vanilla not bad at all!

Aidanne82

It smells like Halls candy or Lush Junk.
Interesting and unusual scent. Wow!
Really fresh and greeny sweet.

Alize123

I like it,i like it,i like it!!!

Whateverwhocares

All purpose, smoked out dark fruit, earthy base, violet leaf in soil type of fragrance. Mild aftershave vibes. It’s..just..okay.

Leaves me with Mixed Emotions.

supersaiyan

Mixed Emotions needs the heat. This does not shine in anything below 25-deg C to me (though it does still smell ok, it's much more dirty ashtray-like in the cool), but I love it in hot weather, and it fares well in the humidity and lasts reasonably long on me, around 4h, which is good for a scent based on fruit and tea from Byredo. When it's appropriately hot, the opening mentholated quality is wonderfully cooling and refreshing and burns off fast, leaving a bitter tea. The tea note smells more like tea than ashtray. The blackcurrant smells fruity and sweet and tart rather than sour juice from concentrate heating up in the trunk of a car (and the blackcurrant I believe is very similar to Pulp for all you Pulp-lovers out there, just in less quantities). Basically, the heat accelerates the life of this fragrance and helps burn off the more "unpleasant" bits until you're left with a tart, fruity, softly sweet tea scent. The tea quality reminds me of Memo Paris Winter Palace - this is basically Winter Palace for summer to me.

Mixed Emotions lives true to its name and is the perfect scent for people like me in the summer, who are picky and don't like overly sweet, fruity, citrus, or floral scents for the season.

As a side note, I think people who enjoy LUSH's Breath of God might find ways to enjoy Mixed Emotions, or vice versa (but definitely sample first).

alxndra1998

i'm not a byredo disciple, but this fragrance is insane. skip mojave ghost, do not pass go! instead, pick this one up. i will admit it suffers from the byredo muddled effect (i.e., none of the notes stand out as distinct), but it definitely takes you on a journey. it's what i wish lost cherry smelled like: medicinal, syrupy, Off, in the best way. it's like antiseptic star anise. the scent certainly matches its name, and i don't think everyone would enjoy this. my friend smelled it on me and said, "to be honest, i hate it." but that's all the more reason to smell it yourself!

marieberd

doesn't "evolve" from fruity to woody; it's more like a light switch. first it's one, then the other. then, like every byredo scent I've tried, it vanishes completely.

Brdnz

Smells like cough drops to me, i actually enjoy smelling it but like why would anyone actually want to wear this as a fragrance

lemonsandroses

I wish I got more smokiness or tea, on me I mostly smell jungle juice and sticky floors. It’s fun, it’s a party. But not what I was hoping for out of this

kingderella

I get a lovely, realistic cassis note that dominates this composition, everything else is just subtle embellishments around the edges. So the question is, do you want to smell like cassis y/n, and do you want to pay Byredo prices to do so y/n

jelesveuxperpétuer

getting up in the middle of the night after having sex for 3 hours and drinking a cold Ribena

bunnysalvatore

In its initial spray, it smells like black licorice to me very strong

Nose for a bouquet

Unfortunately, this is a revision of my original post. I am in fact still smelling that bbq scent a little bit, even into the dry down. So I am still lost on Byredo. I think I'm beginning to understand the aesthetic, yet it doesn't feel realized. If this stayed smoky on top of the tea and currant, without veering the bbq route, it would be a great fragrance.

DeeGrayson718

Smells kind of like Vicks Cough Drops.

Viktoria-en

I agree with those who mentioned that you need to like blackcurrant and tea to like this scent. It instantly reminded me of my late signature scent, Givenchy Ange ou Demon Le Secret (2009). It is very similar but that one might be a bit more sweet, than this. It is a very unique blend for sure.

Apaolone04

This fragrance sent me for a loop, very fitting as the name suggests. First time I smelled this I was like wow what a cool girl scent. I really love tea scents and I also remember smelling a bit of fruit but it was done in a way like I’d never smelled. Reminded me of indigo by nest but a little bit more interesting. I saw the fragrance for a discount on mercari and decided to jump the gun. I noticed it came in right as I was leaving for work so I took the box in my car, opened it and sprayed it on. I nearly choked myself out. I smelled this awful smoky note that I didn’t get at all the first time. I thought to myself great I’m about to go into work smelling like a bbq. I got one compliment at work which was surprising, but it was from a co worker who likes everything I wear so he may be biased. My other 3 coworkers I approached them, asked them to smell my wrist and tell me what they think. All their reactions were the same, they were shocked at what they were smelling. One girl said I smelled like chicken rub, one said it wasn’t bad but it wasn’t good, and the other said it was one of the worst perfumes he’d ever smelled on me lol I will be selling this for sure.

PetyaK

pickles and honey - No.

aznbcool

Wow this is sexy and a complete evolutions, most people here didnt give the fragrance time to do it’s thing. It starts off smoky and citrusy with hints of fruit in the background. Once the smoke dies down your left with this lush green tea like scent with berries and a little herb to give it some lift. It’s definitely takes you on a trip and I’ve gotten multiple complements when I wear this, very underrated

sunrisefox_

I was intrigued by the notes so I bought a sample. It smells like an ash tray and cat pee. :(

fformoso88

This starts out really smoky on me like I was at a bonfire 😅 but then in the dry down the fruits come out to play and it’s pleasant. It’s not my favorite fragrance but it’s a like. I still can’t find a Byredo I truly love on me but this is nice. It’s strong too. This is a statement fragrance I feel like.

Maddison21

I want this perfume would last longer on me.

PijiRobyn

The name is perfect for this scent. I used to hate this. Now I have a love affair with this. This is undeniably badass. It takes a certain type of person to rock this scent. It’s polarising, it’s smoky, addictively sweet, somehow juicy but not fruity, woody, aromatic and so sexy. People love this on me. This is cool. It’s not elegant, it’s not beautiful. It’s just cool. Also good performance which is rare from this house.

Notycd

I'm a simple man. If it's good enough for Charli XCX, it's good enough for me.

I've had a sample of Mixed Emotions for a while but quickly categorised it as "yet another papyrus/berry/pomelo fragrance" by Byredo. Curious to know what the future of pop music smells like, I tried it on again. Something Byredo does very well is grab your attention from the start. So much that a lot of their recent releases feel like scams where you get blown away smelling a bottle in store and get completely disappointed with the wearing experience after you've spent your money. This is also relevant with Mixed Emotions, all the spectacle happens in the opening. The good thing is that what's left after can also keep up.

Mixed Emotions is a bright, sharp blend of opposing notes. It's woods against tea, berries against citrus, you against this cold world. The result is a very crisp, very modern scent that, according to Byredo, "reflect the tumultuous nature of our times." I love the name, I love the back story and might love the scent because of that. Stripping away the fluff, it's an interestingly transparent wearing experience.

Mixed Emotions diffuses very lightly but consistently. The opening is camphorous, sharp and will immediately wake you up. Without getting your nose up to your wrist, you mainly get effervescent pomelo and maté. This is also what it will smell like for the 5-ish ours after. With the woods in the background, the vibe is weirdly tropical rainforest but make it fashion.

AquaBaby5

Oh no, the “lollipop in an ashtray full of menthol cigarettes” is exactly what I got. That plus a menthol cough syrup in the opening lol. I’m sensitive to the menthol I guess and dislike it.

Smelled this blindly in a discovery kit.

sarakp999

I’ve tried this and a dupe that I got at a night market. Both are good. The legit bottle has a strong Vicks opening. It dies down after 10 minutes into a green, sweet scent. It’s not bad, but not worth the price in my opinion. Definitely unique and interesting. 6-7/10. My dupe, for what it’s worth is almost spot on. It’s less vapour rub, more black currant.

LeHuppert

Smoky maté infused with blackcurrant tea. My bottle is 2 year old and the maté has definitely become stronger and smokier over time. There is this underlying addictive sweetness which truly shines in the heat. Another user said this is a polarising and unapologetic fragrance which I absolutely agree with. You need to be in the mood. It makes me feel cool and edgy.

floszra

It's a "getting lost in a forest after a plane crash and trying to survive" type of gourmand. Smells like berries with some smoked ham, and nothing else. Bizarre, but I'm kinda digging it.

Jay Blak

Smells/reminds me of a lollipop sitting inside a ashtray full of menthol cigarettes.
With that being said it ironically is more enjoyable in warmer weather.

toosimilar

Damn hell! 50 shades of burnt resin on my skin!
The only time in my life when I had to apply some other perfume over this to get rid of it!
Be careful: from blotter it may be totally different and even intriguing

bvarney_zip

Am I picking up an oud note?

Stayaway1

Ohhhh I’m so bummed out by this. All I’m getting is Vicks Vaporub & wet bathroom towels / cat pee ;-;

Scissorslizardspock

First impression review from a Byredo fan. Byredo scents generally work really well on me, so take that into account with my review.

This is an addictive juicy black currant on top of green tea and smokey woods. I had no idea that I’d like this one so much. I keep spraying one hand to get the juicy top notes and keep smelling the other to get the dried down smokey woods and green tea. Who knew a woodsy fragrance could also be refreshing. There is indeed a juxtaposition here, a push and pull between the fruity juicy aspect and the softer gentle smoke notes. Interesting, absolutely wearable, unique. I now understand the name of Mixed Emotions.

I will continue to sample, but will absolutely be keeping an eye out for a discount bottle.

gmb48

Smells like smoke and citrus, two of my least favourite smells. Very unpleasant.

Ilikewhatilike

Nice blackcurrant with a twist. Performed well on my skin. I didn’t get any funky smell. Was nice! Good projection for at least 4 hours.

lmnsvgz

Smells like green and berries. It's good but not exceptional

angelmusings

Mixed Emotions for sure. While this is a lovely scent, it smells like an expensive version of White Tea and Ginger by B&BW— and lasts half the time! On first spritz it is very fresh and minty, the birch comes through heavy on me. Before I read the notes I smelt it and immediately thought “wow this smells exactly like the forest in the winter” there are a lot of birch trees where I live so I guess the scent is spot on. The black currant comes through on the dry down but it didn’t smell overly fruity on me. Tea scent is heavy throughout. After a few hours there is a strong lingering smokiness that outweighs the other notes, similar to Margiela’s by the fireplace. This is not as unique as other Byredo scents, but it is also more palatable and a little less niche. Not sure about the $200 price tag on this scent

alessiakote

I really loved this on the paper, I found it very interesting, not the usual blackcurrant, not the usual too woody, or already smelled. After I tried it on skin though, I was sadly disappointed. I so wished it could work but on my skin it just brings out the fruity aspect, and becomes a sweet, a bit generic (still nice) perfume, which is not what I was looking for. Real pity, if the smell on my skin was the same as the one on the stripe, I would have bought it immediately.

drakelito

If you like black currant, this is for you. It's good

ahnespagnes

Loved this fragrance. To me it smells like black currant and spicy woody on my skin, although friends say more of a sweet woody scent. Its my new signature, I feel like it brings mystery and is not overly sweet.

04bd

This is really minty on me. Borderline blackcurrant mouthwash if that’s a thing.

cadentsun

I always thought I was a black currant hater (too grassy/pissy in my experience thus far), but I guess Mixed Emotions is living up to its name by turning that bias around. My blind impression was that it was kind of a unisex, pulpy, blackberry scent with lots of smoky herbal intrigue, while simultaneously remaining quite light and cool-- practically easy to throw on whenever, if you can get over the fact that it's a spendy Byredo. I'm a fan of mate/tea scents in general, but the violet leaf and birch here are new-to-me and create a lovely balance of ozonic freshness and leathery depth. I'm pleasantly surprised by the execution, and find it to be a very handsome fragrance overall.

Bachi

Smoky rose is what I get. Smelled it right next to Nest’s Turkish Rose and they are almost identical (except for the smoke in Mixed Emotions). Very pretty scent, casual day wear. Short on longevity -But the price? Way too high. Get Turkish Rose and layer it with Replica’s BTF and you’ll get this. Plus you’ll have two separate scents to wear individually.

Chocomilk

I always wanted to buy a perfume from Byredo as I love their aesthetics, but after testing many, could not decide for any particular fragrance. After Mixed Emotion came out, and I got to smell it - it was clearly made for me! It's sweet-smoky, kind of perfect sweetness that is not overly sweet.

ameliorates

I love this fragrance - it's a "dirty skin scent" that works very well with my chemistry. The fruit is noticeable but but it's not a "sweet" fragrance. Projection and longevity are better than Gypsy Water, but still poor. I am unimpressed with Byredo's performance, which is sad as they have some very nice scents - like this one! - but just absolutely not worth the $$$ for a frag that I can't smell at all after 2 hours.

Rapide1

japanese fish flakes (Katsuobushi). this fragrance smells exactly like that. mixed with some sweetness from berries.

this is a true gourmand in that it instantly reminds me of eating at a japanese ramen bar, drinking miso soup with fish flakes on top.

likesleet

swirling mixed fruit heavier. thick

renonagasan

I'm gonna be bold and say that those people who said very unkind things about this perfume or are "disgusted" about this perfume lacks taste and experience! If you've spent a lot of time drinking bottle tea drinks and drinks a lot of tea bags at home, this perfume smells really close to that experience. This perfume smells like a blackcurrant infused green tea. Honestly, it reminds me so much of Arizona bottle fruit tea drinks. It's very refreshing, very juicy. It's versatile -- pretty sure this is gonna do well during Summer but this would be a very beautiful every everyday perfume as well and a unique one as both. It's almost pretty linear but in the drydown the fruity nuance becomes slightly less distinct and gives a nod to Baccarat Rouge 540 with its warm and sweet qualities. But that's not to say this perfume is anything close to Baccarat at all. Again, majority of its DNA screams juicy and invigorating fruity tea drink to me.

consistentresearchpractic

tried this on my skin in a shop- it's interesting. The main thing I get is a fizzy, almost sherbetty blackcurrant. There's a dampness and a smokiness coming from the mate, which I wish was stronger. Usually when I want smoke and dirt, I look for those notes alongside florals, smelling it in a fruity perfume was food for thought for sure. It's a definite like!

dear,prudence

This smells like cassis hard candy tastes.

raw.beast

Byredo frags are usually too lightsome for me, but sometimes I use Mixed Emotions. Haven’t tested all from this house, but for now this one is most ponderous for me. And yea, really mate tea with fruity currant! I also can detect some blackberry notes and ‘ey’re making this frag sweeter. Suits any day and any time, it’s just a really pleasant scent for everyone (but I’d say, better for a 30+ masculine person, IMHO). Not something truly special, but quite nice.

youreyes

Smells just like some old fuzzy blackcurrant candy found inside a pocket of an old leather jacket. What I'm having mixed emotions about is who wants to fragrance oneself with such a thing.

Dina France

I'm loving it! This is my perfume for summer evenings this year. I did not like it at first (I tried it on a blotter 2 years prior), but on my skin it looses its masculine accords and becomes like a delicate tea with black currant leaves and the smell of black currant buds rubbed between my finders. Dacha memories! Currant nuances are not top notes, they stay with me till the end while birch and papyrus are hiding behind. Great longevity and sillage, too!

DinaFrance (perfume reviews on youtube)

huet82

Opens up fairly smoky, and dries to a sweet-ish woody. Fairly strong and lasts all day on me. Could be overpowering if oversprayed.

Shui-Xian

Bravo! This is truely mixed emotions! The impression is very ambivalent... Friuty, smoky, woody. Currant, violets and the tea seem to be in harmonious combination however maté and birch makes it odd. Yes, sentimental and nostalgic, but also stagnant, dusty.
It is very unique fragrance, coherent and expressive. For interior - makes to me sense more.
Strong sillage, long longevity.

EDIT: After my colleague started to wear this, I gladly admit, it is appealing. On the male skin woody accent is delightful and charismatic.

lavalampluvr

This perfume smells like a soothers black currant throat lolly. The smell is very overpowering and sharp do not like it at all thank god I tested before buying.

Dmiddy

Whoa. I am getting STRONG eucalyptus with this, and I don’t see it listed in the notes. Gives me Vicks VapoRub vibes… Odd, to say the least.

Bubfairy

I'm not a fan of fruity things but somehow I adore this fragrance. This smell is not new to me but I like how the tea note and the black currant are blenched. It has the green from tea leave and the sour from black currant. Green, fresh and young. I don't get the woody note here but it's totally fine.

And surprisingly, it last really long in my skin (around 8 hours), despite that I sweat a lot in this summer. I think i would purchase a full bottle soon.

aczwy

i smelled this at a concept store once and convinced myself i really liked it?? i'm glad i decided to test it again before buying though, because this honestly makes me a bit nauseous. it's like a black currant cough drop, or ribena mixed with cough syrup. the fruity sweetness of the currant is there, but it's also flanked by a menthol type note. throw in the birch to dirty it up a bit and give it a smoky edge, and i just get a bit of a confused mix. mixed emotions for sure

Rosegardener

Another very cheap smelling fragrance from their trial box. I really don't see the fuss. It smells like a common cheap perfume. It isn't fruity, it is just like a body spray from a pharmacy kind of smell. I think with these exotic names and over prices tag it gives an illusion of being something special but it really isn't. I won't be purchasing a full size bottle.

Yana_Yana

Every time I read others’ reviews I’m surprised at how different everyone’s perception is. To me, this’s extremely smoky over-boiled mate tea with sweet black current. I can barely stand sweetness in perfume, but this one is just right to the point when it’s somewhat addictive. It does bring up the dacha scenery in mind: boiling very dark tea, black current bushes and preserves, smokey samovar by the campfire.

timtoes

Smells like fresh black currants thrown into a campfire. I also get a leather note in the dry down. Strangely addictive!

inewwilliam

i'm personally a big fan of this one, especially the 'dry down'. lasts waaayyy longer than other byredos. still working with the sample but i'm intrigued. smells amazing off a piece of paper and on clothes. might buy a full bottle some day. could work for anytime of day and season outside, even hot summer if you went light on it. this is the og 'violet ends' that boy smells just released.

LanaDelSlay

One moment it smells like an old attic, or very old place that hasnt been ventilated for decades, the other it smells peppery, smoky and musky, then it goes back to an awful scent to me, to then it smells good. I wonder if this was the purpose of this? To give you mixed emotions? I don't know, very odd

User123

As @Hnny said: "Not always entirely pleasant, yet weirdly addictive"

The Hanker

Love this one, but I can’t wrap my head around it.
Sweet, smoke, love it. Getting some kind of Leather vibe.
The birch-papyrus thing I have encountered before, creating this mixed-sensation.
The only one by Byredo my nose agrees to.

Andrewthecologneguy

Wow, so many things going on here, Mixed Emotions is EXACTLY right, but it doesn't excuse what this is: a bunch of notes thrown together. It is near impossible to enjoy this because when you latch on to one thing you like, something else shows up to ruin the party. It's a NO for me, I don't like my emotions mixed. Stirred maybe, but not mixed.

meredithxx

All I can smell with this one is cherry cough syrup.

fpih

Beautiful blackcurrant mixed with black tea. Lively, fresh, a bit tart, a bit sweet and somewhat smoky. I like it and it lasts over 6 hours on me, but I don't love it. Yet, I keep sniffing my wrist while wearing it... Maybe it'll become FB worthy with time?

phongbach

Brands need to stop using menthol note. This smells just like vapor rub.

NDStars

First blast of sweet lightly smoked wood and bright pink pepper that effortlessly cuts through it with a smile. The sweetness turns purple fruity and  intensitifes along with that smoke, like setting fruit juice on fire. Rather fascinating and very aptly named perfume. It's two very different sides of a story told at the same time. After a couple minutes, the fruity sweetness turns a bit...Hubba Bubba grape bubblegum. Oh well. Feminine and best for cool weather.

eaudemale

I’ve smelled an ointment that smells exactly like this. Minty and fruity and weird but definitely not perfumey. Dries down to something similar to baccarat rouge.

Hnny

This to me smells like sitting by a bonfire, wearing a soft vintage leather jacket - perhaps your dad's - eating freshly picked blackcurrants. Bringing your hand close to your face and smelling the fresh green blackcurrant leaves, the berries, the sleeve of dad's leather jacket with old motor oil stains from the garage, and the smoke from the burning wood.

This is definitely more of a personal journey or a memory than something I'd wear for others to enjoy. Not always entirely pleasant, yet weirdly addictive. I keep going back.

clo2005

it smells like mint with some tea in the background to me. it smells like a breath mint. not my favourite but upon testing it projects quite well

annuttu

I can’t seem to get this out of my head. First try, I liked it. Second try, I thought it was okay. I carried the paper with me everywhere and caught whiffs about it whenever I sit close to the tester strip and it tickled something in my memories. Every other sniff I loved it and every other sniff I wasn’t sure if it was for me, I felt like the Kombucha girl -meme on a loop.

It smells exactly like my childhood Midsummer in Finland. The very strong black currant is a lovely sweet that changes into a warm and comforting cup of strong Tea. After that comes the subtle smokiness from the birch. It’s not a raging bonfire that leaves your clothes smell like smoke, rather a gentle smokiness that brings the midsummers to my mind. The sweet black currant is still there and it is very strong, it could be a little less.

This certainly made an impression on me. I can’t forget it, but it is a complicated scent and even though I love it, it has moments where it makes me think ’but do I like it though?’. I still need to do some testing with it, but I am quite sure that this is it, my new everyday scent.

amih29

Back on this one. I tested quite a few perfumes in the last weeks, and I stumbled by chance onto mixed emotions again. I don't find it weird anymore - I like it and see no issues wearing it. It smells different, it's not a boring fragrance, that's for sure, and it evolves - it has complexity (I got tired of perfumes who stay linear).

severelain

It's kind of a smoky, woodsier version of Pulp and Bal D'Afrique. I get why the reviews are all over the place, but there's a quite a bit of depth and complexity here, particularly for a fragrance that lays so lightly on the skin. Reviews have claimed the presence of orange Tic Tacs to cat pee, and it's not invalid. And yet, ME manages to overcome the strange array of phantom notes; a byproduct of a strange composition, and coalesce into something interesting and tasteful. I like it more every time I wear it.

Blacktundras

Wow, the level of criticism here is a little ridiculous to me. If I haven't smelled this on my own, I may be swayed not to want it. Good for me that I wasn't swayed because I think it smells good. It's like a moderately sweet, smoky tea in my opinion. These crazy things I'm hearing are just nowhere near what I'm smelling from the comments. Sweat, socks, and cat pee???? Come on, stop it. Anyone interested needs to just sample it. It obviously needs a test run on skin. The smokey, lightly fruity vibe is kind of reminiscent of a light-hearted black phantom with an added tea note if anything.

hejjulia

i bought a sample and was very skeptical but it’s surprisingly good. it’s round, deep, warm and woody with a sharp hint of fresh, sour black currant. kinda weird. the sourness goes away a bit in the dry down and leaves a sweeter, juicier fruity note. i feel like i might grow to love it :) i’d say it’s a summer scent.

urelle

Smells SO GOOD. This is sweet but not like so "feminine" sweet. The black currant note is really strong here, but it dries down smoky. The tea note adds a little bit of bitterness to the black currant, which makes this scent different from other boring sweet perfumes. Definitely a unique and gorgeous scent. I was not a fan of Byredo because they are usually too synthetic and headache-inducing, but not anymore after trying this scent.

TinaIdra

Wow, I’m surprised by the negative reviews... I think this is lovely. As a swede myself I must say that this is very Swedish smelling. It smells like straight up svartvinbärssaft (black currant juice/lemonade). Such a nostalgic smell for someone who grew up here. It reminds me of Swedish summers when I was a child. Heartwarming.

I only had a sample of this but I would love a full bottle. Longevity wasn’t that good unfortunately... around 3 hours of wear time.

Stoicchild

It's exactly as it's named. At first sniff I had an eyebrow raise, never smelled anything quiet like it. I only like it because it's unusual. It's the type of fragrance no one would be able to put a finger on. This is the kind of scent you'd either wanna buy or hate. I want to buy it but it's $360 here in Australia. It's a perfect scent for experimental people. People who easily get sick of the same type of fragrances, like myself. People who hate experimenting with fragrances, or aren't daring enough to have a change of taste this isn't for them. This is something very new and out there. This is the type of scent you'd want to wear when you hang out with friends. It's not a scent you'd wanna wear at a party. It's a fun scent. It is very different to any usual scent. Maybe that's what I like about this perfume. It's unique in it's own way. It's a scent for bold individuals, as in they say what they mean and do what they say. It's nothing too strong or overpowering.

amih29

I feel black currant, then smoke, then mint, all combined smell great! A bit sweet, a bit minty.
And for a second, a bit of cat piss @jackmatt, I thought you were way off base, but no, I can smell that too!
Mixed emotions for sure.
I tried on the perfume yesterday, and I woke up thinking I need to wear it again! It's weird but good.

jackmatt

If you’ve ever been to a country with a lot of street cats - Istanbul comes to mind first - then you know this smell. cat piss

Phemonoe

I love this. Smells like having tea with blackcurrant jam at a dacha bonfire on a summer night, in a rusty old chair wrapped in an old quilt. Where my eastern europeans at? I want my whole life to smell like this. Wish it lasted longer.

Note: I see a lot of reviews saying cat pee. As a blackcurrant fanatic, I feel obligated to point out that some of the signature terpenes in blackcurrants have analogues in cat urine. I suspect this is an exposure thing: if you grew up with blackcurrant it probably won't code as cat pee, but if you didn't your mind will leap to the nearest available association. (This terpene thing is also the case with pineapple, and shelf-stable pineapple juice reminds me of cat pee quite strongly, as I didn't grow up with pineapples.)

If the bonfire is a bit much but you like the rest, you might try the OilPerfumery version: it's a little more green and a bit less smokey.

@dottyfluff I so agree with you! I tried Mixed emotions just today, and OMG it’s terrible. Dirty socks, dusty carpet, bad hangover. Sorry.

dottyfluff

I so much want to like Byredo - the brand, and the descriptions seem so interesting, unfortunately most of the fragrances smell harsh and vulgar on me. This one is no exception. It smells like the clothes and skin of someone who used a nice feminine fragrance in the morning, and then spend the day drinking coffee, smoking cigarettes and riding the London tube. After 1.5h of wearing it I get faint waves of a nice scent and strong waves of ashtray.

ivanda

Birch, matte and black currant are perfectly resembling the name mixed emotions - at first sniff smells dirty and heavy, then pleasant birch comes in, then seems nice, after a while smells like one night stand with just met stranger on the street, then again you can catch some nice Vibe in it and at the end you do not want to wear this on yourself. And the price is high enough - better to buy something else.

Birnam_Wood

At year 2017 Floraiku released “One Unberella for Two”, a minimalist black currant - mate perfume.

5 years later Byredo get around to copy this scent, and of course they make it unnecessarily messy.

The opening is exactly like the name suggests: it’s a mixture of notes, hard to pick out who is who.

It’s puckery, astringent , with a fruity tone in the middle, somehow remind me of unripe green-yellow mango (black currant), and with a silver minty/camphor cool tone edge. Perhaps, the soft cold powdered texture of mate is also detectable. A “vicks vapo” note (methyl salicylate) also comes to play at some point.

After it dries down, that harsh tartness of black currant turns up a few notches, and the puckery dry-powder textured base (birch???) also been exposed for a second.

The “tea” notes is like a ghost, you catch it from the corner of your eye from time to time, but it never comes to forefront as an actual note.

Not the worst scent I’ve smelt, “fresh” and pleasant even, overpriced as usual.

ckorp8

Yes, black currant ricola. That’s the only thing I get from this. Mixed emotions, not really, since I only get what I like. But for a perfume to smell like this at this price point…
Functional longevity and silage only about 2-3hrs but skin scent lingers on for another 7 hrs.

morganbowden

I understand the cough drop criticism but I'm afraid I have to ignore it. I guess this divisive scent lives up to its name because I love it. I found it homely and comforting, sweet blackcurrant made smoky, almost incense-y, by the note of tea. I think it's well balanced and even a new favourite from the house.

carmenandmonkey

Smells like blackcurrant Riccola cough drops that have been stored inside a glass jar ...a jar that contains smoked beef jerky sausages.

LMBelvi

Vick's Vapo-Rub had a baby with orange Tic Tacs. Jesus! enough said...

amyand123

First impressions I was definitely confused on whether I liked it or not! After about half an hour I was addicted to the smell. Its definitely a love or hate perfume! The fruity and leathery smell works really well together. I believe if you like black saffron by byredo you’ll probably like mixed emotions! It’s not an everyday kind of perfume and I wouldn’t put it at the top of my favourites lists but there’s something unique about the smell that keeps you wanting to smell more! If your looking for a comforting smell or something that’s just a change from the rest of your perfumes then its worth buying!

mikemuscles21

I have to say the descriptions are right. This is a smoky, fruity, leather in such a timeless chic way! I also get sort of a tropical- sweet/ sour vibe. Almost like a passionfruit that makes your mouth water. It just reminds how the "cool people" smelled in the 80's but in a modern way. I have to say I agree with most of the reviews before mine. Although I do love this perfume!

queensizefun

This is what my dads clothes, who smoked 2 packs of Salem menthol cigarettes a day, smelled like. Mixed emotions indeed. While I miss him and it's interesting to smell this minty ashtray smell, it's not for me. Anything that resembles smoke or cigarettes triggers my cravings and Ive been smoke free 5 years. Underneath the smoke theres a lovely freshie that wants to come out and play. This would be interesting winter scent for someone not triggered by the initial blast of ashtray. I'd say get a sample like I did because if you're a fan of ELDO Jasmine Cigarette or Zoologist T rex or Imaginary Authors city on fire then you will adore this. Absolutely unisex leaning neither pink nor blue. Stays in the middle lane.

thestranger

I swear every time I smell this I get something different. My first reaction was that it smelled like really bad BO. Then for the next hour it shifted between lemon, smoke, hay, dirty patchouli (though it’s not listed?), and beef jerky. After an hour it was too faint (probably nose blind cuz I see everyone rating performance so high), so I resprayed, and it no longer had that BO smell. Now it’s this very pleasant tart and smoky mate, I almost feel like I’m at a hookah bar. I’m gonna have to wear this one again, I have…. “Mixed Emotions” lol

Though it seems too dangerous to ever wear a fragrance you once perceived as body odor

haleyscents

Something about this reminded me of mosquito repellent spray (maybe the mate/papyrus combo?) No thank you.

heavenlycreature

Smoky, salty, woody. I get a fleeting burst of berry in the beginning, and then notes of dry tea leaves and burning wood quickly rise to the surface. It teeters on the edge of a burning tire, then as a cool whisper of herbal mint creeps in, settles upon a more natural setting: a forest. I'm reminded of campfires in the woods, specifically campfires that I attended during a long summer drought during my childhood. Staring at firewood gently smoldering in the pit, surrounded by dead tree branches and dangerously dry grass that has baked for days in sun, and sipping upon a sweating glass of ice cold mint tea to alleviate the stifling heat. Mixed Emotions has decidedly stirred something within in me.

Pair with: blackberries off the vine, menthol cigarettes, a thin tangled gold chain sticking to the back of your neck, fireflies, stripping off sweat-soaked clothes for a dip in the creek.

hsiangchi.huang

This is the smokey version of Bal d'Afrique, and performance is upgraded. 8.7/10!

I get the mango (black current + mate) that's similar to Bal d'Afrique, or at least the same vibe. The mango is mixed with roasted tea leaves, hence the smokiness. Wrapped within this smokiness is a hint of cool mint.

If Bal d'Afrique is light/airy/upbeat, this is darker/heavier/earthier, although with the same juicy yummy fruity undertone.

Although being a perfectly unisex frag, it is better suited for men imo.

pandora0646

Imagine eating rich, fruity berry jam while sitting next to a fireside. That's the essence of Mixed Emotions. My mom smelled it and said that it seemed like the notes were competing for attention. While I could definitely see that, I like the chaos. I smelled this as a sample and immediately bought the large bottle because it was so unique. Tough to say if this would be better during summer or winter months due to the balance of berry (summer) and smoke (winter). It's definitely not an everyday scent for me, but it's a must-have for anyone who loves unisex, hard-to-place scents!

chaarlote

I think the essence of the scent captured in the name, you do not know what you have and you can expect from it, it looks mysterious and chaotic, warm and at the same time cold like a chameleon, like today's instability, but also hope for a better tomorrow 😘 that's how I perceive it… Its wery intense with strong endurance

jeffwithfrags

Prelude -

Byredo has grown to have many many scents now, many more than I first envisioned.

Their Quality and production values were never an issue for me; it was the scents themselves. Surprisingly challenging, very Niche, pretty gauche.

So this was a pleasant surprise, actually a very pleasant one because I did not expect much from it after the crushing disappointments of Pulp (rotting figgy-fruit composter), Bal d'Afrique (boring green tame citrus) and then Black Saffron which has the best Berry note ever but then the leather (Tuscan macho austere leather) gatecrashes the party.

The smell! -

On 1st spray; I get a nice fruity berry hit. Not overly lush juicy fruit pop but ripe and ever slightly autumnal even but the most important thing is that it was sweet.

It's almost certainly the Blackcurrants; but I get hints, very slight of green and maybe herbal too - but they never interrupt to overwhelm or invade the sweet and inviting opening which is crucial.

I prefer the more malty, sweeter Black Tea but I guess they wanted green and surprisingly this goes no where near the greenness of Bal d'Afrique or other greeny-opening scents like Diptyique's 34 Boulevard St Germain or Biehl's al02.

Then I get a slightly warm, light musky vibe and then maybe a slight floral but it sort of peters out into a slightly thinner Boulevard St Germain (where the Diptyique is much richer, stronger and fuller in it's amazing drydown).

So, a bit disappointing there.

But, I'm a Top-notes enthusiast and the dry-down while average is still pleasant and even slightly interesting and surprisingly with a bit of edgy smoke and the comforting dash of milky-tea lingering almost meshing all the other notes together and smoothing them out.

I'll be very generous on this one as it did surprise me with the increased Sweetness over their other offerings (save for Black Saffron but as mentioned, that is toppled by it's trademark punch of pungent leather it has). I always like Niche scents that try and be as inviting as possible when introducing themselves.

My rating: 8/10.

RainbowGirl

This opens SUPER black currant and tea. This black currant smells like blackberry to me. Like a blackberry bush, sweet and green. When it settles it smells like blackberry tea. My favorite so far, out of the four Byredo testers I received.... but I still have one to go. :)

Edited to add: smells a hint smokey in the drydown.

chanacloud

I definitely get fruit, spice, smoke and green tea. This fragrance kind of reminds me of a version of Prince of Wales tea called 'Charleston' by the company Belloque. I did not pick up on ash or cigar though. Yes on smoke, No on tabacco. I wear black currant, and smokey scents very well so this is a perfect blend for my chemistry. It's a strong, well balanced fruity/smokey sillage so be ready for an intense aroma. I think its very sexy and feminine but not in a shy girly way, its more bold, fun and alluring. I think it's a fun date night kind of scent, think going to a party, out for cocktails and dancing or having a glass of wine in the park. I dont think the name "mixed emotions" is supposed to imply that we should have mixed emotions about the fragrance, I think it implies that it is a complex scent, balancing some extreme aromatic notes of fruit, smoke and leather - it's a little dark, a little light, a little flirty, and a little intense all in one.

jenn.sacks

I only get fruit... I liked it and bought it, but didn't wear it long enough. It completely disappears on my skin within an hour.

elsamilea

When I read about this I was very excited since I love black currant, however I had never experienced it in fragrance, and lets just say, I have mixed emotions.
It's very sweet and fruity, although I have a really hard time finding the black currant in this one. My thought leans more towards berries overall. It's quite green, while still being very warm and leathery.

There is something about this that I don't like(and I can't really pin-point it), while at the same time there is something incredibly interesting about it. Mixed emotions for sure. I think this is a young and bold fragrance, maybe for someone looking for a sweet and fruity summer scent and want something refreshing and bold.

Elderflower_desert

Yeah...mixed emotions about it...it is smells like ashtray to me....no fruit at all or Wood...quite long lasting

Gelatoni

A bag of cloying saccharine sweet Haribo Gummibären and a dirty ashtray in a smelly cheap leather handbag. Not my cup of (mate) tea. And not very inspired either.

IMHO the cool kid of the niche perfume brands is way overrated like this repellent gimmick is way overpriced.

malin7502

Hmm. Sweaty armpits? That's about it. I've really tried to get a scent of something else, but no - sweaty armpits.

Annata

I smell peach and only peach but in a beautiful way, a very juicy peach, sweet and bitter at the same time, it’s delicious, warm, cozy. I’m not seeing the peach note in here but this is all of what I can smell. The best fragrance from Byredo.

ingeneuxo

-This is the older sister of Meliora by Parfums de Marly. (-)

fluffypuffy

Sure this is super unique but I don’t know if I want to smell like this…very hard to describe the scent

Maschka

This is the smell of a hot Russian summer in the country side.. Endless fields of grass and wildflowers, birches, eating black currant in the shade, drinking black tea in the evening on a wooden bench, slight smoke in the evening air. Wow, super throwback to my childhood.
Its sweeter than I usually like my perfume, but I would consider a full bottle!

Edit 26.09.2022 Shortly after this review I bought a full bottle second hand for a really good price and this late summer/ early fall my partner and I have been absolutely obsessing over it! Its so moody, like a stormy sky, kinda dark green with dark, overly sweet berries and lovely smokiness that doesnt feel like literal burning wood or cigaret smoke or incense.. for us its an ode to cool, rainy, windy, messy and raw nature, full of force even in this period of dying and going to rest until next spring.

The Wolf

I like all the notes so I should like this more than I do.
The black currents pull a little funky to me and it leans too feminine. Pass.

carblazehell

So weird! I totally get a Grapefruit blast when I smell this...but I see that is not a listed note. It's a pleasant Grapefruit and eucalyptus experience on my skin, which must be the birch, mate and tea. I really like it a lot!

eileenhawk

It's hard to say there are mixed emotions when there are just no positive ones. At first, I thought ew mint and just so overpowering that I couldn't find something that would make me want to wait for more. Only after searching it up, I realised that it was black currant all along but I still don't understand why there's such a minty-ish feel to it. After some time the black currant just becomes so sweet and sticky it makes me nauseated. Must try before buying. Fragrance not for everyone.

ir.chirik67

If there was a smell of unwashed body for 5 days, this is it.

hamlet16$

I am obsessed with the uniqueness of Byredo, I had Seven Veils and nearly cried when it was discontinued, so when I bought Slow Dance, I got the big bottle. Fast forward to hearing about Mixed Emotions and I got very excited. I got my hands on a sample, practically giddy with excitement. And then I felt I couldn’t get away from it...for almost a week!
This smells like black current - true to its notes....but after some time, a sickly cough syrup develops. Even worse, with time, it became a stale Drakkar Noir mixed with a bodily smell - not quite BO - but like hormonal high school boys whose greasy collars trap the scent. It stuck to my jacket, my purse, and my nose for days. Awful. So sad that this one is such a profound miss. HARD NO!

tamarahope

What. Is. Happening.

First spray: edgy fruity. Love at first impression. But then 3 seconds later... is that... rubber? Then smoke? Then... actually burning rubber? And a hefty dose of salt. Where did the fruit go? And how on earth did this happen in the first 15 seconds of this frag?

Will update after a few hours but holy heck, I had to come on here and live-tweet my initial reaction and see whether anyone else was as mindfucked by this as I am.

ts4r

This smells exactly like citrus rinds after they've sat for a week on a bathroom vanity beside mouthwash/toothpaste

perseeque

After reading all the reviews I didn't expect much but was pleasantly surprised! I don't get mixed emotions, but positive ones. It opens with a campfire smell, with smoky leaves and tea (reminds me of Russian Tea). Then there are green wet leaves and cassis jump in. After short while campfire is gone and it's cassis and leaves all the way. To me it's a beautiful forest smell, full of camping romantics, summer nights and embracing the nature.

ptsau

I tried it at Bloomingdales when I was getting their candles and found it smelled so unique at the moment especially the sales associate told me it’s a better performance of Byredo so I bought a bottle. I was never into Byredo because of their poor performance but I adore their candles. Strangely their candles have very strong throw compared to their fragrances. Anyway back to Mixed Emotion, the sales associate was so nice to give me a 2ml sample along with the full bottle purchase so I could try it out on my skin for a full wear first before opening the full bottle and I can return it if I don’t like it. Unfortunately, I decided to return it. It does smell unique and it’s the best performance of all Byredo I tried but the black currant is too strong and mixed with the mate that create a weird smell on my skin. Although those notes are only the top but they last very long. In about 3-4 hours when the tea and violet leave notes pop up, I do love it from then but it’s just hard for me to get passed the first few hours of the odd smell. Too bad it cannot become my only love from Byredo and I had to return it. I rather spend that money on some others that I really love. But again, Byredo candles are great...better than Diptyque candles in my opinion.

i2uby

I just tried this and it’s a huge like for me. A great introduction to those who want to delve into leathery scents. I prefer this over Black Saffron. It opens with a sweetened blackcurrant milk tea and a few minutes later, it evolves into a creamy, smoky, leathery and woody campfire. The name of this perfume fits perfectly.

08/11/21 Update: Bought a 50 ml bottle. It's the edgiest and most polarizing fragrance I own. Unapologetic.

astarta

The first moment was nice, very fruity. Then it turned very smokey on my skin, like a cigarette. And I hate cigarette smoke. So I don´t like this scent either. I hoped more. Without this smoky part it would be maybe boring but a very nice fruity scent. For my nose it has nothing to do with MFK Baccarat Rouge.

Heifrank

Association to Baccarat Rouge. Just a bit more subtle, fruity and a touch of smoke. I also get association to the fruity part of Tuscan Leather.

doctorjui

Byredo is a house that I love. They do light scents that are easy to wear and office friendly but at the same time, unique.

I went to try it immediately after I knew about its release. This was a fruity smoky scent. The opening reminded me of pork or beef jerky named “Bakkwa” from Bee Ching Hiang. If you do not know it, think of syrupy coated pork or beef. Then, you flame grill it. There you go! It stayed like that to middle note. Fortunately, it turned into MFK Baccarat Rouge 540-like when dried down.

A full wear left me “Mixed Emotion” with dancing stomach.

Almost Pulp-like initial burst of fruitiness, but it's all cassis. The tea grounds it nicely after that initial opening of sweetness. The smokiness to me is very gentle. It also has that classic Byredo smell to it, I still can't put my finger on it. Performs way better than their classics such as Gypsy Water or Mojave Ghost but I can imagine people looking for a gentle skin scent skipping this one. In the first hours it projects heavily, after about 3-4 hours it does calm down to a green, slightly woody skin scent and the fruitiness is almost entirely gone (on my skin).

exxellence

Bonbons gout cassis tendres (I wish I could post a picture of it)...Les vrais savent.
They added some smokiness but that's exactly what I get with Mixed Emotions.
It brought me back to middle school as soon as I sprayed it. It lasts long on me... I like it.

I've made it clear that I don't like Byredo but my frag lady at Sak's put a sample of this in my recent sample bag so I thought I'd try it. Just smells like black current candy to me, if such a thing exists. I personally wouldn't wear it again but it's not horrible.

Edit: I couldn't take it anymore and doused myself with Tom Ford Noir to cover it up.

CupidCard

Sweet pissy smoke. I really like this one... weird like M/Mink. Worth the blind buy, but maybe get the small bottle if you’re feeling daring.

rc_96_

For the first couple hours, this smelled just like a campfire, which made me feel a bit self conscious, as I love that smell but know others hate it. But the dry-down was much softer, muted, and a little floral. It was much prettier while it was wearing off. I might use the rest of my sample bottle on days where I'm at home, wanting to feel cozy.

sweetdaffodils

I liked the fragrance until the dry down, it ended up being extremely smoky and not what I usually go for. It immediately gave me a headache and I had to wash it off immediately :[

J'adore accords

Perfectly named. I get delicious black currant and smoke. Waiting to see if I get a headache but this is damn interesting! Like nothing I’ve smelled before. The opening is my favorite - heart is pretty good too. Jury still out on dry down but I like it so far! Not a safe blind buy unless you live for smoke - sample first.

alecvdc

Very interesting fragrance. It's not my cup of tea, but this really is something special. On my skin it was very smoky with a slight tint of the fruits in there. Sadly enough I really don't see myself pulling this off.

Natalina30

For me this fragrance was a surprise - bold, young opening with sweet blackcurrant candies, drying to ripe blackcurrant, tea and leather.
Delicious, I love it.

cresol

Opens very green and dry and smells like stale cigarette smoke. The dry down is herbal and reminiscent of tea but has distinctive leather and blackcurrant notes. Dry. Unisex veering into masculine territory. Mixed emotions indeed.

Black Currant "Ricola":

To me, it's dry and minty lapsang tea with orange peel and clove. It's like those berry flavoured cough drops and breath mints, exactly!!

I would say it's pleasant, refreshing, a good mood instead of a mixed emotion, quite unsweetened candy like.

mshilov

This is a rare occasion for me to rate the perfume on Fragrantica as 'ok'. Mixed Emotions took me by surprise. The sharp green and fruity beginning is something between blackcurrant leaves rubbed between fingers and the smell of cat's urine left on the carpet. It's very familiar anyway. With time the scent opens other facets - spicy, smoky and leathery - and transforms into airier version of Baccarat Rouge. I can even say that for me it smells like a 'good' Baccarat Rouge (which I hate, sorry) - and this intriguing drydown stays on a blotter even many days after... A powerful fragrance with an abstract and weird attractiveness. Mixed Emotions, strange but correct name for it. I would not buy this Byredo creation, but it was fun testing it! So far from safe mainstream scents and definitely worth trying.

erininbend

Sharp currant up top, tannic mate behind it, dry fruity - this is a compulsive wrist sniffer for me; I need someone to walk by me while wearing it so I know if this is a fragrance for humans or just an interesting room candle, though.

ysl187

Oh the blackcurrant is the BIG player here!! Damn... a little herbal. It remind me of some hard cough pastilles my grandmother had when i was a kid.. And they was herbal and blackcurrant! Dont know if i wanna smell like this, but interesting!

XXYZZYX

Byredo Mixed Emotions gives me a VERY strong tea forward opening, and I really like it! It’s definitely from the mate and blackcurrant.

The immediate skin smell is somewhat fruity, somewhat herbal, and for some reason my stomach is hurting? There’s a candied berry jam like scent, which is most likely coming from the blackcurrant. I don't really get any tea in the middle, and I really wish I did to help lighten up the heavy jamminess of this perfume on my skin. It definitely pulls more sweet on me than tart and woodsy, like the notes may indicate.

Like the name, I have mixed emotions about this one. I'll enjoy my sample, but I don't think this is FB worthy for me.

Anna Stromberg

I love this! It’s very much a true black currant scent with the ripe fruits, buds, stem and leafs included. The woody notes and tea are present but doesn’t take over. The balance between sweet and tart is intact from start to late dry down and never goes sour - a big plus in my book.

lmevans79

Appropriately named! This begins very strong, like a punch in the face. Immediately I know that it’s not for me, it feels like it’s more masculine than feminine, but it’s so interesting that I left it on my arm. The dry down is better than the initial experience for me. I both like this and don’t, yet I can’t take my nose off of it. It’s very unique.

Ghosty

Nope. Dirty armpits smell.

nszlufik

First take off of the tester strip:
Green and vegetal. Fresh, green, tart, herbal and slightly sweet. Intriguing but not absolutely unique. This reminds me of an 'intense' or thicker, denser version of Mugler's 'Fly Away' (yellow bottle) whose main note was supposedly cannabis. I really enjoy the scent but would advise to try first or get a sample.

jellybeantree

The name really fits with the bottle. It starts off with a blast of black current and it clashes quite energetically with the woody aspects giving off an almost kind of burnt embers or even ashtray vibe. I’m thinking it’s the birch. After a while it settles into a comforting fruity tea and wood vibe and the papyrus comes out more it is very pleasing to me. It’s so strange but also really beautiful. Wow great new release from Byredo.

Bbjr

Just not sure how I feel about this one.

aki777

To me this is a realistic tart and green smell of black currant leaves together with the smell of the ripe black currant fruits in the background. No vinegar, no tea for me which I’m happy about. Everything is super nicely blended and creates that dense and sensual aroma that makes me think of sitting among the black current bushes while picking them up on a summer day like I used to do when I was a kid. Your hands smell of the leaves and the juice that accidentally leaked onto your fingers, amazing😊 the scent does remind me of Diptyque’s L’Ambres dans L’Eau but less sour and more juicy, and also of De Marly’s Meliora but less sweet. Vagabond Prince comes to mind as well. I like Mixed Emotions the best out of all of the three. It’s a love at the first sniff for me.

jomxlohx

This smells like Philosophy Falling in Love (which I really like) which has gone off. Dislike this one a lot. To me, it smells like a damp kitchen cloth (after you’ve rinsed it with some berry-scented washing up liquid). Avoid, not worth the money.

andresjackson94

Quite literally mixed emotions. My initial reaction when sprayed in the store on paper was awful. Very rancid aftersmell, thought to myself no way was it for me. Although sweet and very currant heavy when you first smell, the after smell had a very pungent overpowering effect. However, before leaving the store I had then spray my wrist with it, and after the dry down, I was very pleasantly surprised. The strong after smell calmed leaving the fruity/ woody aroma to linger. Never smelled a perfume that I initially was turned off by, then so intrigued. How did they know id have mixed emotions? Lol.

It smells like a great evening wear cologne to wear in the spring/summer. Very indulgent if worn as a daytime scent.

Bad emotions ★☆☆☆☆

I love the idea behind Mixed Emotions but unfortunately the result is reductionist as opposed to holistic. It's too literal, combing the good and bad but not synthesizing them to a whole that is both contrasting and harmonious. Take for example Grojsman's 100% Love which is both repulsion and appetite merged to a whole new emotion which isn't merely mixed but truly fused. Or the top notes of Angel which combine the overripe rotting mango with an icy patchouli to yield a dissonantly delicious accord still unrivaled today. Or the civet filth and fresh fougere of Kouros which need no introduction. Or even Dior Homme, which combined the cheapness of amber woods with the regalness of iris. They're the caramel and salt to Byredo's orange and toothpaste. There are so many opposite things you can mix but only a handful clever combinations become holistic to generate something new. Others, like Mixed Emotions, merely remain as clashing parts that do nothing to support each other.

Lapsang tea, berries and mint. Unappetizing and vile, only bad emotions. Sorry Byredo.

katrin.niisuke

I would not blind buy it. It is peculiar tea with birch that is quite pungent. I got more raspberry in the opening rather than blackcurrant but the currant is there too. Interesting comeback after two last releases of lil fleur and pulp were so boring.

FaisalBio

I like the scent. It's 80% similar to Royal Crown Ytzma.

It start with a dark black tea smell then it get sweater and smoky, it has both feminine side which start at the beginning of the scent and masculine side which revealed after one hour.

To my knowledge, not too many perfumes smells like mixed emotions or Royal Crown
Ytzma. So it's special!!

Overall 7.5/10

cranky137

This one is fruity and definitely for those who a) like black currant in scents b) like fruity scents like Pulp. Because of the black currant, it reminds me A LOT about YSL baby Doll that is now discontinued. Mate or black tea, together with birch is present somehwere in the opening, but the scent is mostly linear with black currant.

@michaelnordstrand

So the Travis Scott fragrance was actually Pulp?
