This is a STATEMENT MAKER SCENT!
I lost my words to tell how much I love this!

Starts with a boozy apple and spicy pink pepper. Later, musky rose appears, and the best part is the wonderful animalic amber. It's incredibly addictive!

Mr.Fitz

Wow..this is a Cypriol bomb to say the least. I didn’t like it the first week I got it and thought it smelled a lot like fermented apples. Subsequently it smells much better now and it's grown onto me and I’ve taken a liking to it. Now I can appreciate how high quality and bespoke blending this fragrance has.

It's like like a soft sensual apple and rose slightly less potent than Jo Malones velvet rose &oud's rose. The apple and rose notes are the most prominent in all note levels. The apple in this is similar to that of killian’s smoking hot, but this is softer and more prominent. Not blind buy safe, but a masterclass from a mastermind himself.

CAF911

Fragrantica always categorized cypriol as “woody”; but to my nose it’s intensely GREEN.

This is a cypriol BOMB

I bought a decant expecting a rose oud, and this does not smell like any rose oud I’ve had my nose on.

It’s more akin to other cypriol bombs like Prins Rhinoceros or Amouage Journey man.

Nothing can replace my precious Rhino, so it’s a bit redundant in my collection, but I REALLY like it.

Performance is amazing, no complaints there.

Arsenal Till I Die

In the air I smell similarities to CD - ambre nuit. This one’s a beauty with more punch and smells high quality and excellent performance. The best in the lineup for me.

Dani.G.German

One of the deepest and most complex fragrances I've ever smelled/owned. First few times I wore it I thought it was just fine, but after about the third wear it's really enamoured me. Almost as if my brain perceives it differently, in a good way, the more I wear it.

The fragrance itself is apple/rose dominant with woody undertones and a very refreshing, almost eucalyptus theme running through it. Performance is absurd. Sillage at 3-6 feet AFTER 24 hours with 2 sprays. Probably the most impressive niche fragrance I've encountered.

Definitely not a mainstream crowd pleaser and not a safe blind buy. You wear this for yourself or to identify/impress niche fragrance connoisseurs.

Also had the best atomizer I have ever witnessed.

MrMrBrian

I have a lot of fragrances & sometimes My hardest choice of which one to wear is when I perform my music in front of bigger crowds..In smaller crowds I tend to go for what I call Statement Maker Fragrances that are in my mind “Niche” that get both alot of love & hate! & I wear them to be different..& usually feel like they describe me…..Anyways Decided to not to put alot of thought last night at my biggest show to date & went with “Promise” And 5 hours later at the end I was meeting everyone was getting a lot of hugs & Honestly while nobody said anything I knew it was an awesome choice..I think I have a review on this already for anyone to look up, But for the guy who has a lot of fragrances, I learned myself last year that this is definitely one to get!!!

supermukbanglove61

Great artistically. Otherwise smells like a weird cough medicine.

SidShad

This is an absolute gem. I can totally get the apple accord. To me it feels like I have put my nose in a wooden barrel that was once used to ferment delicious apples. The apples are no longer there in the barrel but it still smells of it. It is an amazing fragrance and immediately evokes so many emotions. The performance is unquestionably great. I really love it and will always keep it in my collection. Special occasion, but bottle worthy.
I would also like to say it’s a room filler. Before buying I tested it at holts Renfrew and brought it on a test strip and kept it in my home office. Next day the entire room smelled of delicious fermented apples in a barrel. Delightful experience.

NoirMemoir

On my first impression of Promise i wrote a review because i felt a bit underwhelmed by the fragrance, but i quickly deleted it because i felt like such a perfume deserves atleast a wearing and some more testing before coming to a conclussion. Today is the first time i wore it properly and my impressions didn't drastically change but all is based on my personal perception of the scent.

The fragrance strongly features an apple note but its an unusual apple in perfumery. Its not a fresh, "watery", crisp apple that we are used to from scents like Invictus, Boss Bottled or modern fresh scents. Oh no, this is different. I've seen others describe the apple note as fermented and i wouldn't go that far, but i'll meet you half-way. I picture smelling a RED apple thats dehydrated, with the skin of it dry and wrinkled. The apple note sits on a spicy and ashy base that gets more pronounced as the fragrance dries down. I guess this comes from the Cypriol Oil. The ashy aspect is more apparent when smelled upclose, but thankfully dissipates a bit when the scent travels in the air. Despite the strong apple note, do not imagine this as a fruity fragrance. I do not pick up the rose by the way. Its an oriental composition that smells dark, serious, mature and expensive. I would describe Promise as a very rich and elegant man's signature scent but not necessarily as his formal scent. It doesn't wear too heavy or too dense but make no mistake its far from a light fragrance.

On my skin, it is not an agressive screamer, but i have no doubt it has strong presence, just not in a juvenile attention seeking way. As Peter Cullin would say: "Be strong enough to be gentle". The longevity is massive, i could faintly detect the scent on myself after 16 hours, the next morning basicly.

My dissapointment comes from the fact that despite all the positives i've described, due to price tag and self-hyping the fragrance, i expected a "regal" scent that will blow my mind and be the "final boss" of fragrances. And in all honesty it has what it takes to be the centerpiece of a collection, as long as it aligns with one's taste.

I like it, and i'd say its worth the price tag but considering my budget it has to really move me in order to save up for such a purchase because Frederic Malle's Promise costs HALF my monthly wage (3rd world country). For those in more developed countries with good wages, the average price of 350 dollars isn't so daunting and the fragrance is worth it for the technical abilities and quality it offers.

Very deep, very thick, very elegant, very unique
Amazing!

hassankhalid91

okay after giving three to 4 times wearing

this frag remind me of my class room back 90s when i was in highscool ( sharp pencil ) yes its very much like sharped pencil classroom scent.. which is smooth and nice part of this fragrance.. im getting vetiver which is harsh not enjoyable maybe because i spray very close to my skin but in the air this fragrance do a magical work

RSulieman

Dark. Deep. Boozy. Strong.

Intense Cypriol combined with apple, rose, incense, and pepper. The notes are masterfully blended to create an oud like scent. The scent is so dynamic, I get a different experience depending how much I spray. One spray is more than enough for me, two and I'm pushing the limits.

Try before you buy. An absolute gem!

Probably the strongest fragrance I have. I blind bought and it was not at all what I was expecting. The apple note, which lasts the full way through in my experience, smells very unique, tart, not too sweet, and not at all like a YSL Y, Hugo Boss, or PDM Layton for instance. The dominant note is cypriol and this is what is giving the fragrance its strength IMO so make sure this is a note you can appreciate before purchasing. This clearly smells oriental but not of oud to me as some are suggesting. Over all, the fragrance kind of shocked me on first smell and I didn't know if I liked it or not but I sort of convinced myself to be patient and take time to appreciate it and now I like it and look forward to wearing it.

Scentyromy

Absolutely stunning nuclear bomb ! Elegant, sexy, ridiculous performance. One of my favorite with The Moon !
Another gems from Dominique Ropion

Illium

This is the most romantic Fall fragrance. To be wearing something that is enigmatic, that wraps around you like a living being, and announces your presence in a dark room. It is powerful and unique, and lasts forever. I have smelled this on clothes long washed. The apple and the rose, followed by the cypriol, play and elongate, evolving as you wear it. It melds to your skin and becomes you. It can be strong so I have only sprayed it on me once at a time, and this lasts until I take a shower and wash my clothes. I have only ever received compliments, and I like to be able to smell myself as I go through my day. I wear my scent as a sense of identity, and this is one that comforts me with its lovely, one of a kind form. Buy it, try it.

Oudo

Simply stunning! Best from the desert gems collection and also the best Frederic Malle ever.

Caesar's Legion

This is an ok scent for me. I'm not liking the rose accords. I wish it had Oud, Incense and Myrrh instead of Rose and Rosmary A bit too floral for me. Like Guerlain Santal Royal. That to is too floral for myself.( Bois Mysterieux is my choice)
Otherwise it is pleasant to smell. A woman definitely can wear this.

I have not smelled Portrait of a Lady,The Moon or Musc Ravager yet.

MrMrBrian

A few years ago I know I would’ve hated this too. And yet it ended up becoming my fav purchase of 2023. I remb testing fragrances at Neimans on the paper strips & because I have heard so much about this over the years I full on Blasted both the top and bottom of my arm with it and about 30 min later in the car driving home I was just smiling ear to ear knowing what was next…This kind of tells me I may wanna get a little further into the real ouds beacuse compared to all the niche yet synthetic ouds that I own , I could detect a bit of the real deal in this, Somewhat camphorous along with the castoreum that never fully leaves, Which is prob the main thing some people can’t deal with. But it opens up more and more for that apple note to shine as time progresses..We had one of our hottest summers in Texas last Summer the heat index was 115 + out in the rail yard and it’s just black rock & no shade & solid black iron tank cars! & I was wearing this and sweating my ass off and It’s like the apple turned from green to big red delicious apples, peel & all!! And when I’d walk into the building periodically to the blasting cold air conditioners draft inside, That apple note in this would just shine more than ever hours later with just light wafts of castoreum!! Just a genius perfumer as everyone says..Anyone who says this is awful, I understand, Because “again” I know there was a time when I could not have jived with this & now couldn’t ever be without it

FreshVetiver

Love, love, love! This scent is strong, sophisticated, and hypnotizing. It has a similar complexity to Vetiver Extraordinaire, which I would hope so because the artist for this fragrance is Dominique Ropion. The Bulgarian and Turkish Rose are very well put together. I could probably say that this could be polarizing for some, this is a fragrance I would not recommend blind purchasing, spray it on your skin before buying!

This fragrance also has a time and place to be worn. Fall, winter, and spring are best when the temperature is chilly, a date night perhaps. If you do decide to wear this during the day and during the summer, spray early enough that you don't suffocate everyone else.

Overall, great fragrance, the performance on skin is great, when it sticks to your clothes, it lasts a while longer.

D@ne

This is RIDICULOUSLY strong. Ridiculous. The fact that it comes only in spray-format is a crime. The review below mine describes the scary synthetics nicely, so I'll spare you the repetition.

There is a lovely scent in here, but it's glazed in the strongest woody-ambers known to man. This could likely be used to cover the stench of a dead body with one spray. Proceed with extreme caution.

jonah999

Unfortunately this is a total scrubber for me. I truly don't understand the praise this fragrance has gotten. The heavily spiced and camphorous opening is really pleasant, to be sure, but the eternal dry down is nasty and cheap-smelling (much more in line with department store fragrances than niche). The gigadose of ambroxan isn't the problem, the problem is the screechy ambrocenide/superambers and the aromachemicals used for the apple accord. They persist and persist, smelling somewhere between flavored childrens vitamins and overheated electrical circuitry. Hard pass. And there is nothing in this fragrance to warrant the ridiculous price tag, btw.

CrabsuitLando

PROMISE is Excellent. #DominiqueRopion

dudebro

fresh, camphorous rose woods. it's like walking through a rose garden, but you smell every part of the plant and soil, with blooming roses and green buds. fantastic fragrance.

oh my skin this is versatile for all seasons. i love it

CoConni

If you want to know everyone with that you are here in the room by wearing an oud-like middle eastern smelling perfume - this is it.

Fresca

A green apple wearing a leather jacket and Portrait of A Lady. Unfortunately it's all under quite a bit of cypriol. I can understand the gasoline smell others have mentioned, but it's not so strong after an hour or so.

Projection & silage are impressive. The bottle I have was part of Frederic Malle's Roses Collection; it's definitely the most interesting and edgy of the five. Not a safe blind buy. I think it leans masculine.

Sapere_Aude

so most of my reviews here have been done after a few drinks and this one is no different. the fact that i had to take time to even collect my thoughts before leaving a review says something. first of all, i love sweetie aoud byt roja, i also enjoy bijan, the closest thing that comes to mind when i consider how challenging this fragrance actually is. i wore portrait of a lady to thanksgiving dinner last night and wore promise today and what an experience. divisive? sure, compliment getter? not really. i think i was actively pissing everyone off on both occasions so lets talk about compliment factor aside. i think promise is far too academic, it's put together sure but it might be over dressed. the reason i mentioned bijan is because it's so easy to hate, 80's fucking firewood? who wants that. but i still think it's neat and interesting in it's own right. this however? i can't fucking sign off on this composition. it's so fucking loud and so serious and it just lacks any playful likeability that i want in a 500 dollar fragrance. the thing that intrigues me is that this seems to be Dominique Ropion's goal? he claims that fragrances should be obvious....does this mean boring? i don't think so but i just can't understand how he managed to make a fragrance smell so much like a white accountant who thinks missionary is the only acceptable position. i think i hate this brand and can not stand behind it. get yourself a parfums de marley, a paris hilton body spray, something fun, save this stale shit for the rich people that can afford it.

ommmaarrr

Got the reformulated bottle and it doesn't smell anywhere near the original. I'm a little disappointed with the opening, I don't get that explosive apple at all :/ does anybody else feel the same way

speedymp5000

Absolutely AMAZING - unique, elegant, complex, long-lasting, intoxicating.

This is a fragrance that takes you on a journey. Easily one of my top, if not, THE top (my signature). Quite incomparable to anything else. After a year and some change, I still find myself fascinated whenever I spray it.

A masterpiece of a fragrance.

A binding oath of fragrance!

Frederic Malle's Promise is a fragrance that stands as a testament to the power of scent in capturing and conveying deep emotions. Known for collaborating with the world's top perfumers to create distinctive and compelling fragrances, Frederic Malle's Promise is no exception. Crafted by the renowned perfumer Dominique Ropion, this scent is a complex blend that speaks to the heart with its rich and resonant notes.

➡️ First Impressions:
The presentation of Promise is understated yet elegant, consistent with Frederic Malle's focus on the essence of the fragrance rather than ornate packaging. The first spray releases a potent and captivating aroma, immediately signalling that this is a fragrance with something to say.

➡️ The Scent:
Promise opens with a burst of bright, crisp notes. The top notes of pink pepper and rosemary create a spicy, slightly herbaceous introduction that is both invigorating and inviting. This energetic opening sets the stage for the heart of the fragrance, where the floral and fruity aspects come into play.

At its heart, Promise reveals a masterful blend of Bulgarian rose and Turkish rose, a classic combination that exudes elegance and sophistication. This floral heart is deepened by the addition of apple, a note that adds a modern, slightly sweet twist to the traditional rose narrative.

The base of the fragrance is where Promise truly pledges its lasting impression. The warm and earthy notes of patchouli and labdanum, combined with the rich, resinous scent of agarwood (oud), create a deep and enduring finish. This base is not just a conclusion; it's a lingering promise, a reminder of the fragrance's enduring presence.

➡️ Longevity and Sillage:
In true Frederic Malle fashion, Promise delivers excellent longevity and sillage. This is a fragrance that stays with you, evolving and revealing different facets of its composition over time. Its presence is noticeable without being overwhelming, making it suitable for both intimate encounters and more public affairs.

➡️ Versatility:
Promise is a versatile fragrance, suitable for various occasions. Its sophisticated profile makes it an excellent choice for formal events, yet its unique blend of notes allows it to be equally fitting for more casual settings. It is a scent that can speak to both genders, appealing to those who appreciate a fragrance with depth and complexity.

➡️ Conclusion:
Promise by Frederic Malle is a fragrance that lives up to its name. It's a scent that commits to its wearer, offering a complex and evolving narrative of notes that captivate and enchant. Ideal for those who seek a fragrance that combines traditional elements with unexpected twists, Promise is a testament to the art of modern perfumery. It's a bold, emotional statement, a fragrance that makes and keeps its promise.

Mnjlw21

I had this fragrance in 2020 and absolutely fell in love with it. Gorgeous rose combined with deep earthy patchouli smokiness. It was so full on with just 1 spray and lasted forever, I could still smell it on my clothes weeks later. I recently repurchased (Sept 2023) and unfortunately it just is not the same. The intensity of the fragrance is so so much less than the older version I had, I have to spray multiple times and by the end of day it has just disappeared. The smell feels much more focused on the top notes and I don’t get that full on gorgeousness as before. I don’t know what happened, maybe it’s changed formulae or my nose has changed? RIP the older version, I crave you so much!! Would love to know if anyone else experiences this??

hassankhalid91

This! If I could choose only 1 perfume from my whole collection, without sentimental value, this would be it.

Let me clarify why.
My skin (regardless I hydrate it or not) destroys any perfume, the perfumes that are declared here as being able to last up to 6 hours on some people's skin, on mine it lasts maybe 3 hours (at best, and very faint) . Frederic Malle Promise sticks with me the whole day. On my clothes I can detect it 3 days after I wash it (the last notes) .

The opening for me is a harsh peppery smell. Only after a few sprays and months, I started smelling some apple (if I get my nose really into the spot, and only for a few seconds) . Afterwards it progresses into a sweet note (the Roses) . The drydown is a sweet sour to my nose, and a hint of roses (on the clothes at least) . This is a sophisticated, mature perfume. I can' t praise it enough, I can only recommend it.

I need only one spray, 2 are overwhelming
Projection is humongous
It truly lasts
It is expensive, however, seeing you save up on the amount of sprayings, it is worth it

I love this so much, that I ordered a second bottle a few months after purchasing the first, just in case.

Best perfume I smelled and owned, up until now.

This is the one and only perfume I' d keep from my small collection- best quality. End of story.

Pandamummy

I have been secretly guarding this perfume since 2020. I don't want people to know about it because I love it so much! Well. The secret is out. This is a Ropion masterpeice. I don't get much apple. More rose and cypriol and patch. There is no oud, yet it is very middle eastern. It smells very feminine/rosey on me and masculine/smokey on my husband, so it truly is unisex. And... a great value if you consider that 1 spray on chest is the maximum you will EVER need for 24 hours, it is amazing! Not a blind buy. For a lady or man who is 40plus, professional, impeccably dressed, confident, and alluring.

BB88

Amazing stuff! Can't stop smelling my wrist. Definitely get that apple liqueur with smoke, but to me this is balanced perfectly. Goes back and forth as you're smelling it, that's why I can't stop. Like nothing I've smelled and a must try if you're thinking about it.
Edit: So, it goes through a smokier stage later, and then goes back to a more mellow apple liqueur, rounded finish. Amazing composition. Bravo to Monsieur Ropion!

Thatbwoy

The negative comments about this fragrance are what I look for when going through this sites and others, I get a perverse and odd level of satisfaction when reading those review from people who do not like this fragrance.

and its not in some misguided snobbery, where I assume other's noses "aren't as refined or advanced as mine". Nah its actually better than that.

When other's dislike this fragrance it's not because of thee brand, not because of the perfumer, not because some Social Media influencer directed others toward their preference. No people who dislike this dislike the fragrance, and just the fragrance.

And I support that because it reaffirms my love for this fragrance. I'm not judging the people who hate this, I'm not challenging them to try and change their mind. They dislike it. Cool I love it for every
reason why they dislike it. I would say this is a possibly a 'Masterpiece', it very close to what I would consider as such and I only consider a handful of fragrances from all those I have sampled over the many many years I have worn fragrances.

I would say that you can get away wit only two sprays with this, any more and you'll overwhelm yourself ( I did four and it swaddled me and nearly took me out). The apple and rose in this are the main characters in this fragrance; the apple is delightfully crisp, but in no way as sharp and acidic, its fresh but also muted, not like if you'd expect this to like summer crisp fresh fruit scent. The rose is a masculine rose not that powdery rose that they lumber female fragrances with (or used to). The thing that really makes me consider this a great fragrance though is the pepper and the slight darkness which I think comes from the basenotes.

I absolutely love this stuff and I will have to scrabble around to find the coin to get a bottle of this stuff

This scent is so polarizing, yet so alluring.

This caught my attention while sampling the various Frederic Malle scents. The apple accord is so beautiful in the opening, and it makes way for the rosemary/clove/cypriol as it dries down on my skin. It evokes images of aged applewood, damp leather (labdanum), a hint of menthol (probably from the rosemary), tartness (apple), and hints of sweet and spiced notes. The composition of this smell is honestly one of a kind, and it'll leave an impression on you if you let it. This is a statement piece, and the drydown makes me feel so much lust

Definitely not a blind buy! Please test this first as it's not for everyone. It took me a few tests to commit to a 10ml sprayer. This is one of those scents that need an acquired nose to really pick up on. Excellent performance as other reviewers have mentioned (I only need 1-2 sprays max). It's become my niche pick for special occasions/dates!

Edit: I've been wearing this over the week and have really come to appreciate it for opening the door for me to look into more Middle Eastern-styled fragrances. It's also become an easier reach for me to put on for the day, not as challenging to wear as I once thought.

Edit 2: After a few weeks of wearing this, the drydown is very reminiscent of BR540 in a lot of ways. I think it's the ambroxan. Either way still love this scent.

Edit 3: After finishing my 10ml decant I don't think I'm going to get a full bottle. The apple/cypriol is really beautiful, but I find myself waiting for the rose drydown more often than not. Still a lovely fragrance, and signature-scent worthy for sure!

Edit 4: Down to my last sprays...I lied I like this again (SEE HOW POLARIZING IT IS?!)

Edit 5: My last spray, truly a masterpiece....I'm getting a bottle.........

I blind bought this a few days ago, because Dominque Ropion can do bo wrong in my eyes🤩… and I was CORRECT!!! I was on the fence for months, because of the mixed reviews with few women rating and liking this, but decided to get it anyway and am glad I did. It does have a similar dna to my signature Portrait of A Lady, but has a cleaner and deep green freshness to it, which makes it intriguing as a woman’s fragrance that leans slightly more masculine. (In a good way💕) I got soooooo many compliments while wearing it today for the first time. If you’re a woman with a little courage, who likes to stand out and help others understand how they should interact with you, because of your fragrance… this is a hit! Just buy it! ❤️✨

dripdrip

This one is extremely “niche”, I couldn’t really enjoy the smell, neither my close circle. Don’t even think about blind buying. It’s definitely strong and it has this weird gasoline smell which is really off putting. I ended up swapping it for Musc Ravageur, which I like a lot.

Jabb

OMG !!! Just Nooo!!

chridela

A masterpiece. Glorious and beautiful are 2 word that come to mind. My favorite perfume in the FM line. Middle Eastern, rich, wearable in most scenarios. I find myself craving it, daydreaming about it. Scent profile is as outlined by Fragrantica. My bottle is 2/3 full and I am actually stressing about running out of it! It's one of the few perfumes for which I have had such a reaction. Thank you, Dominique Ropion.

RGH01

Promise is a bold and daring perfume, one that really challenges the senses and shouldn’t be dismissed too hastily. It opens with an explosion of juicy apple and sharp pink pepper which is both refreshing and incredibly pungent. From here a duo of two classic roses emerge to balance the harsh apple with soft floral touches.

As this settles on the skin - a dry, earthy cypriol and patchouli become the stars of the show. For me this is where people find the scent to be challenging, cypriol definitely isn’t for everyone. There’s some spicy touches and animalic castoreum lurking in the background, but they’re not overly noticeable.

I’ll be honest, this one took some time for me to appreciate it. I was so close to selling my bottle but I stuck it out and wore it a few more times, and ended up falling in love with it. I really had to take the time to understand this fragrance and build a relationship with it. Definitely not for casual wear and definitely not mass appealing.

massimilianoinquieto

LeatherCouch

This is a powerful fragrance. It's the trail of Dior Sauvage made more leathery, musky and almost oud like. Love it,but this needs maximum 2 small sprays. It's so dominant and aggressive that will fill up a bar,be careful guys!!!

Duci0167

It's a tricky on ... this one. In first week I was like man this is just not my type of a fragrance. In time I started to like that APPLE ROSE dominant combination. I'm one of those who like to experiment with fragrances in summer, fall, winter, spring but Promise needs cold weather to open. It's so potent with great longevity and projection that 3,4 sprays will dominate anyone in that room.

j4yt33

Took me months to appreciate, it's great, smoky, woody in colder weather, but try it on a warm summer night and it will change to a pine-like apply, slightly rosy, almost fresh fragrance. Just stunning!

akosimarvin25

How can i love this fragrance? Its giving me headache but a lot of people here liked it, i couldn't be more jealous.

c0rtland

top 10 of all time fragrance. the most vivid perfume i've ever smelled.

victormarbus

I had a mini that I brought everywhere, the neck of the bottle eventually chipped off when I fell spilling most of it's juice into one of my favourite leather handbags. If anything this has increased my love for both even more.
This desert gems collection is just too good, I love the night and already have full bottle of the moon which I might love even more.
Promise is classic perfumery updated for the modern day, as Dominique Ropion does best. It's blended to perfection; all the notes stand . I am very sensitive to clove but this has just the right amount.

gummypepsi

One of the absolute masterpieces in modern perfumery. This one exudes quality and complexity, you just want to revisit it at any opportunity. Usable in most seasons!

gaz090

After owning and using Promise for a year, I can say this is a really interesting fragrance, and maybe a bit misunderstood at times. A lot of people rate this a colder weather, evening fragrance. Indeed, this can punch through the cold and multiple clothing layers easily. But what punches through in the cold is the clove oil, cypriol, patchouli, and ambroxin. Dark, smoky, leathery.

For me, where I enjoy this fragrance most is on warm, sunny days 25c and above. I'll spray it once on my forearm and I get juicy apples floating in rose water, in a wooden barrel. It's bizarre how different the fragrance becomes in hotter weather. Overall I enjoy it much more in hot weather than cold. It's smooth, light and shows complexity, morphing and changing between the apple, rose and wood scents.

LeatherCouch

The far dry down trail shares a similarity with Dior Sauvage, Creed Aventus,BR 540,Dior Homme 2020. That sexy, musky, almost metallic sharp masculine vibe everyone finds irresistible. But this is far more complex, dense and ultra up-scaled than the aforementioned. 10/10.

maxji777

Just got my second 50ml from jomashop. Batch code 22280 from 2022-10-07. It feels really dialed back. Still could see this is a same scent, but far less potent, more designer-like rounded and smoothed out. Performance feels like several times less strong than other one I had

Update: after 24 hours, familiar notes has appeared, and it does not feel subdued anymore. I tested it yesterday during my ramen trip, and got a compliment and was asked what I’m wearing. It is still strong and potent, but I feel like my first bottle from couple years ago performed slightly better. Even though I’m happy with this one too!

ina.rem

Delightful essence of sweet red apples. As the fragrance develops, rosemary becomes noticeable. Also a subtle hint of mint emerges, however, I do not see it in notes. It would be great for the fall season.

Simiviews

For some reason Promise, couldn’t keep its promise to me, the top notes of apple pink pepper or even rosemary were not visible to me at all. The wasn’t any sweet tinge of the middle notes and the base was all too overwhelming and overpowering unfortunately, the dry down was definitely to strong on my skin and for my nose. This is definitely a polarising fragrance. I would suggest strongly to test this on your skin rather than blind buy. I wouldn’t recommend wearing this in the summer and it may not be office friendly. To those who had a great experience with promise you’re one of the promised ones.

A_Ferrera

This one is really intriguing!

The apple is so fresh and not weighed down by they other notes, it slowly moves to the back whilst the others start to come forward. I couldn't stop smelling the tester strip...don't think I will be introducing a bottle into my collection as it doesn't fit my tastes, I can't help but appreciate it.

undermyskin

Dominique Ropion is a magician. His mastery of composing amazing chords is capable of going beyond imagination.

Promise is a daydream that takes you where you don't expect. And each time it is a different journey, almost the scent lived by its own life and, depending on the moment, was able to change its essence to surprise, charm, seduce. Is it alchemy? Who can say that.

Of course we are in front of a show, something unusual, very rare and precious. In my opinion, the notes have not all been declared and this is an indissoluble part of the game. Let it be the mind that speculates. May it be the spirit that rises above these Arab nights, beyond the known time and space. May the soul feed on images, colors and sensations. For once, let the technicalities be wiped out and the essence to speak, there is no need for anything else.

7 out of 5 stars. Here we are really beyond.

nicholasmendez13

The opening smells so good in the air, so sillage is great with this one. But for some reason I don't really want to smell it up close. The green apple and dry woods is prominent to my nose. I think the ambroxan is dosed too high for my taste, would smell even more upscale with more smoothness and less dior sauvauge-like metallicness.

karolisjachimavicius

The promise of it is the legal cannabis. If you will get all the notes, all the nose, you will get the pure smell of a cannabis bud.

I do enjoy beaver's ass too. Long live castoreum!! My fav perfume ever for it's divisiveness and strength.

CAF911

I thought for sure this would be a love for me, but it’s just OK.

I like cypriol, don’t get me wrong, but it’s just too much. It makes the whole thing a little one dimensional. The spicy apple opening is the best part but then It just goes way too green.

It smells better in the air than it does close up, and lasts all day; so that’s nice.

For the price though I just don’t see myself ever going for a FB.

This should be a $200 perfume, not a $400.

Glad I sampled first 🤷♂️

DYNABLASTER77

Smells like posh old lady's denture

bingo001

Intoxicating, sensual and transformative. You will be noticed when you enter the room wearing this and will get people asking you what are you wearing. Stays with you for 12+ hours as it reveals many facts of its facets with time passing. This is a poem in the form of a fragrance, one that tells the tale of a tryst between two beating hearts longing to meet each other.

Having said all that, this fragrance isn't for the faint of heart. You need to have a developed nose to be able to appreciate its power. I'd recommend sampling and sitting with the fragrance for a full day to unravel the story Promise is trying to tell you.

orestes13

Huge Cypriol and Ambroxan overdose in this one. It also contains quite a bit of Patchouli and Amyris oil, which make it quite woody and balsamic. The rose and apple give it the necessary lift. Quite nice for a winter fragrance if you like heavier scents.

xillage

This one is amped up Pepper and Castoreum, with hints of patchouli and Oud / Nagarmotha extract. The rose in this is negligible, as oud pepper and castoreum masks it up. Quiet dark and skanky fragrance. Not a crowd pleaser, it is polarizing.

Airylove

Just few words for this perfume. This is the kind of scent everybody loves so no hatred for this one. It projects like crazy, lasts for super long. One should definitely try this one, maybe try a sample before buying as it is expensive for lot of people. I barely used 20 ml off my full bottle in recent years, its so strong you only need 2-3 sprays and that too on a very special day. I promise, this works quite well. Full marks in any category.

nsdap148813

Very hard . My t-shirt smells like this perfume 1 week after use . If you want something that just can't be removed even after shower - buy this ! That doesn't mean you should be afraid to spray it. After all, you give so much money to be noticed everywhere, so feel free to spray at least 5-6 times of it. I've personally gotten up to 10-12 sprays at a time and I'm alive so…. The people around you will not puke . Just ...you will be noticed .

Caldrumr

Cypriol city.
Very strong, so don't overdo it. But a very nice earthy and woodsy scent with some spiciness to it.
Extremely similar to Amouage Journey Man.
Laughably overpriced.

Stoicchild

Gorgeous Rose scent, very unique. I find this more unique than Portrait of a Lady. I feel like this one's somehow a stronger version of Portrait of a Lady, but at the same time not really. I'd say Portrait of a Lady is a day version of this. This one's more mysterious, definitely for special occasions. You don't have to think that much to put on Portrait of a Lady, but this one you do. You can't just wear this to the park. This is for special date nights, or even weddings.

Duci0167

All I get is sweet apple. Great quality no doubt, longevity and projection great also but not for my taste. Not so versatile about weather seasons.

Irislover23

WOW, i mean when i first got it i really couldnt get anything other then the cypriol note but after wearing it a few times it unveils itself to me, the amazing Apple, and rosemary lifts the rose to a whole other dimension its such an amazing scent verk potent and intense but still sophisticated, having the wonderful portrait of a Lady DNA in it but more bold makes this one of my favorites, funilly enough tied with portrait.

Its a scent that everytime just unveils more and more of itself to me for each wearing. Its an overal 9,5/10 i would give it a 10 but nothing is perfect

Muhammad.alzubaidi

Masterpiece, exceptional , to me it is best of the best without hesitation.

Couldnt understand it’s beauty and creativity at the first time smelled it , but then I said ; you know I have to give that complexity a try again , then at the second chance I literally shocked and went crazy like what’s going on here !!!! how incredible is it.
My best and favorite perfume ever.

missile414

This is firmly a Middle Eastern/North African fragrance. Anyone who has grown up around them will recognise this DNA immediately. It also leans much more feminine in that context. I've smelt this scent before many times, but to my knowledge it has never been captured in western perfumery before because it's not immediately pleasant to an unfamiliar nose. Even where I’m from young girls can’t typically pull this off, it’s usually reserved for slightly older women. It's always been too difficult I think to translate into a traditional perfume, but if anyone could do it, it would be Dominique Ropion. Honestly it's quite amazing and a testament to his genius that he was even familiar with this specific DNA of the arab tradition! I was very surprised when I first sampled this.

Also be warned it's really a crime to spray this on a paper strip. It must be sprayed on skin and appreciated for a few hours. It needs time and human warmth to complete it. But honestly what a wonderful piece of art! The price tag is enormous but this masterpiece is definitely worth it.

don00

opening: like a damp/earthy vapor rub
after it settles just a mossy earthy smell, meh

leon7

I have this for few months now and it always gets me compliments. I waited to give a review as I was not a fan at first, then I forgot to write about it. Today I received lots of compliments so had to finally recommend this to y’all. Smells sophisticated and it last forever.
Price is way high
Edit 10/5/23 I went to get a new bottle and nothing like the first sniff. Unfortunately, I got something else. Maybe reformulated? not sure but unfortunate.

Sammy@au

Frederic Malle Promise.
A big beast of a fragrance.
So good & addictive.
Fruity, leathery, musky powerhouse of a fragrance.
Yet with deft and a subtle sophistication & elegance throughout.
World class.

potent112

Masterpiece..

samI23

I had a 5 ml decant and this has grown on me very much. The magic of this fragrance is in the air and not when smelled upclose. Im in love with this fragrance i just bought 100 ml bottle. Imho its worth every penny, and it will last you a liftime because the performance of this is insane. 10/10 for me

Dermerden

Wonderful scent!
Smells great in the air and creates an excellent scent trail.
Recently found out that The Artist No.2 by Maison Al Hambra is very similar to this.

Ilikewhatilike

On my skin it is deep, earthy and powerful. I didn’t get much apple, but a whole lot of cypriol oil, dark patchouli and some other depth ( which I’m guessing is the castorium). I wore it in very cold weather so maybe the apple didn’t get a chance to pop much, such as what I experienced with B683 extrait. Comes across as something a confident mature man could rock.

avasqueznich

A Perfume masterpiece!!!, every time I smell this perfume I don't believe how perfect this composition can be, it has a unique DNA, being a Cypriol/green apple combo with some juicy roses that give it a sexy and softer aspect to wear with a very noticeable background of patchouli, labdanum and ambroxan, this perfume is a winner, it exudes class and mystery, but at the same time it is sexy as hell, it is complex, as I like it, it is The best thing that Frederic Malle has in his portfolio of fragrances, and although it seems a bit linear, the truth is that the Composition gives prominence to certain notes such as cypriol that after a while rises with intensity, this deserves that at least Everyone try it once in their life, it's incredible!!! its duration is infinite, projection and sillage, not to mention that, it is in my top 5 of my favorite perfumes for life.

This perfume is not so versatile, I do not see it for use in the office, much less with casual clothes, because in the alternative case that you do not dress like the class that has this perfume, it can easily take you to him, it is too powerful.

MixJoey

I'm mixed on this one. I can clearly smell something burnt/smooky but not in a good way. I wanted to like it but meh.

The sillage is really poor despite being a winter fragrance but last well on skin. Cleary overpriced and better sample it.

raybara

This perfume has a captivating smell, you can defiantly smell the apple notes along with the warmer notes. Just wish the silage performed better on my skin, after two hours it became a skin scent. Not sure if I was applying it incorrectly but I will give another try for final thoughts.

rbalkris

Extremely well constructed mysterious floral aromatic centered around a very noirish rose center. The perfume opens innocently with notes of green apple, pink pepper and sage. Then it gets into the rose heart which slowly starts getting dark with clove, labdanum, patchouli, cypriol and synthetic castoreum. The perfume settles on a powdery ambroxan bed with the rose slowly receding in the background and these notes taking center place. The slight masculine leaning scent has moderate to strong sillage and good longevity because of the ambroxan. Not for everyone but will find a lot of appreciation from folks who like unusual dark scents. Enjoy!

The Spanish Inquisition

All I could smell was a burning, overpowering musk scent. I'm very sensitive to certain musks, so if you are as well, this is not a good blind buy. Get a sample.

hfiebert

Bright and boozy. Cypriol is king in this scent and gives off this boozy almost woody vibe. This is warm and enveloping its comfortable and reminds me off a relaxed night out. The apple and rose merge with the Cypriol's booziness to remind you of a spiced drink. This is one best smelled in the air as the scent transforms into something heavenly around you but can be quite sharp close up. Another stunner from the Dessert Gems line.

heavyindustry

I've gone from loving to hating this scent. Now I'm at a neutral-to-like. My experience of Promise is heavily dependent on how much I apply. Under three sprays, its strong, unique woody scent sweet with rose and apple. Over, and I get a very harsh, biting smell like paint stripper. The heavily dosed clove and cypriol turn the apple sour, the woods smell chemical. Oversprayed (or smelled from up close), the scent is discordant. However, common to strong perfumes, the magic is in the trail. I was testing Promise at work to understand what I didn't like about it, but a colleague kept raving about how nice it smelled. The perfume projects strong woods and rich sweetness with apple and jammy rose. The accord is very unique and I've done it no justice here. When I was able to smell what my colleague smelled, I couldn't hate this at all. There was no chemical harshness or sourness. As with any perfume, you can learn to smell what you like.

The peak of the scent comes one hour in, when the clove and harshness of the scent has subsided. Today, I have sprayed the scent too close to my nose, so the apple is still sour. Over time, a strong woody rose note grows progressively sweeter, smoothing the scent out. Patchouli adds a little depth, but rich would would still be a better descriptor than deep. Heavier elements of the scent appear hours later in the drydown such as savoury, hairy castoreum.

One of the strongest scents I have tested (just behind Interlude 53), persists on skin for 11 hours. Projection on application is extremely strong, I'd suggest not to apply it to the neck or chest (back of head is ok). Though its not a love, the journey I have taken with this scent makes for a story and has helped me understand my own nose. Very unique scent, definitely worth sampling.

DenisBozic

Promise is bold and risky. Juxtaposing rosy, woody, and spicy notes, this perfume rebels. And rebelling means it’s not a crowd-pleaser.

I can pull it off only when I am feeling incredibly confident and even a bit cheeky. It’s sexy, intoxicating, and frustrating at the same time.

greekkey52

This is a beautiful perfume. I have several Frederic Malle and this is at the top of the list. Will move to the top 5. Not for faint of heart. Projection is wild. 😍

Vladimirskiy

As many reviewers noted, it is a beast-mode fragrance, one spray is enough... maximum two (for cold weather). I don't get any rose it is castoreum plus sour apple cider vinegar. The scent is sexy, smells very expensive, most of my friends called it pleasant yet unusual, not something you can smell every day. Leaning slightly masculine, cold weather wear.

maxji777

Best of FM, and probably one of best scents ever created – easily top 5 of all time.

Though agree that not everyone would love it, it takes a somewhat experienced nose to understand and appreciate it

godfatherfragrance

Sour, pee, rosy, woody. Very Unique and I love it. Some people may hate it. 8/10

Riaz117

Very strong and long lasting. Opening is nice but far into the dry down it starts to smell a bit like apple cider vinegar.

vintagelover

If we are to describe based on traditional definitions of masculine and feminine fragrance, this would be firmly masculine imho. I don't buy into all that though and wear anything l enjoy the smell of. And I enjoy the smell of this! But it's worth bearing in mind if you are thinking about blind buying.

Sadly, I don't get the apple coming through. It's all smoke and wood for me, even though smoke isn't a note on the list. Infact I imagine it smelling really good on a smoker! It smells expensive (it is expensive) and has good performance. Levels of performance I rather wish all fragrance had! I understand people saying they get Oud from it. It definitely has that kind of vibe to it- down to the wood I expect!

It's definitely one you should try before you buy. I got the sample with a bottle of POAL I bought for my mum's 70th birthday... she has now bought me a bottle of Promise for Christmas, so that marketing strategy certainly worked!

comer_aparte

I'll preface by saying, I don't think perfume should be worn to please others.
Not always anyway.

There's something intoxicating about Promise. I smell it, and I love it. I smell it again and it's foul. So I have to smell it once more, to remind myself of what I loved the first time. It's truly remarkable how the apple is so present on the 10 first minutes of the opening and how the perfume's true core of rose, cypriol oil and labdanum unfolds after that. Labdanum is one of the notes I love the most on my skin. However, even when mixed with rose it's not for everybody, so I'd advise caution and definitely to try before buying it.

Promise expands in an animalic, woody wave, punctuated by medicinal notes and ever-present rose. It's one of the greatest of the house, and the only reason why it isn't more highly regarded is -probably- because of how overpowering it can be even after 3h wearing it, when you would expect it to have worn off a little.

But it's sometimes good to be reminded of how impactful one perfume can be.

Ortonesque

I was very intrigued to try it after reading reviews. One spray and Good Lord... off we went at an exhilarating speed.... I got a hint of blackcurrant amid a scramble of sensations. Some time later I still felt this perfume was having a conversation with me, as if every time I went back to it something new emerged. Very interesting. It stayed strong over a very long period of time, evolving into something very masculine and primal. I woke up the next morning to find it still there, smelling strong. I felt like I had anxiety the day I wore this, and this perfume didn't help. It wasn't me wearing the perfume; the perfume was wearing me. It was an interesting experience, but I am not tempted to make this a keeper.

mehdiab

Lovely perfume, I like the opening with a juicy boozy apple note, and the Rose transition is very smooth.

It is indeed quite middle-eastern, and the petrol note is prominent, which mimics Indonesian ouds. Promise is Potent, and certainly one of the best performers from the brand.

Not a safe blind buy! Try before.

Nevertheless, my favourite rose perfume from the brand is Portrait of a Lady, way more elegant and classy.

Edit:

After multiple wears, it grew on me, and it's a must-try from FM. Very elegant, oriental, fruity, but serious and mature.

Perfect for cold weather, I don't get oud but rather a purple background, with apple syrup and a rose potpourri emerging from it.

Amazing

Clauder13

One of the best for the cold weather!
This opens up with a super fruity apple with spices and in the dry down it goes a bit dirty and more seductive.
It's quite boozy and animalic.
Lasts for ages!
I always go for 3 sprays with this one , no need for more!
Perfection!

Pez0

I first bought this knowing about its good reputation of being robust and long lasting and I can confidently say it exceeded my expectations, I can also say that I received alot of positive attention by multiple groups of people at different stages of the day, I would actually recommend more for a night sent for colder days because it can be quite potent in a good way, I think it's opening is excellent and when it has finally settled it has a very nice scent that projects,
I am definitely buying more bottles because its reliable and smells amazing, it will definitely stay my night scent

RottigrlNYC

Cypriol oil ruins it. It ruins every perfume.

tecfield

It's interesting because the note combination resembles oud but this doesn't have it listed.
I also definitely get a petrol vibe that my nose and mind can't pass it. I feel I am around an oil refinery. I think this is one of those fragrances that needs time for me to start liking it but for now it is just ok for me. As others mentioned, first sample it because this is not a blind buy; 2, one spray is probably enough for a half of day and definitely mind where you wear it because it imcan definitely be offensive; 3, I think this is very masculine so if you are a lady make sure you sample it first before paying $300+ for it.
I really appreciate its beast mode though. It's very very long lasting and projects heavily. And me sniffing it close from my wrist, it makes me cough for some reasons. Interesting fragrance with no boundaries.

Gatorsrules

This fragrance is enormous, and I never oversprayed. Way too powerful for our Florida heat. Boozy, juicy, fruity, animalic, and rosey. This is only rose fragrance to date I have liked!

alit

What a stunner, this perfume is absolutely savage. A lot of spice and juicy green apple on rose bed with animalic undertones. Personally I wouldn't wear it as it leans way to strong and masculine but it's truly an amazing fragrance. Sillage and lasting power is enormous. Not a safe blind buy!

scentcritique

This is a stunning fragrance from Dominique. A Rosey, fruity, dirty/earthy, masculine scent. It's like the POAL for men edition. It does remind me of a fruitier version of H Aoud by Roja which I adore. One spray goes a long way.

shaedz

One of the smoothest and long lasting fragrance I've ever smelt.

Wow! This is an OG,a gangster amongst perfumes cos of it's persistence

Chinello23

This is SUBLIME. Like what a stupid word but it’s the only way to describe this. A little minty and medicinal but it’s gorgeously blended, completely unique. Creamy, sweet and a goddamn nose singeing powerhouse of a fragrance.

Shawn330

This is stunning, and most long lasting tart apple with the warmest oriental dry down!!! Love Dominique is a true master. Beautiful blended jammy rose with tart apple, warm woody fresh and mysterious all in one

chike_0

A smoky , aromatic bomb.

The green apple in this fragrance is photorealistic - top of the line quality.

The rosemary, pink pepper and ambroxan give it the aromatic touch.

The cypriol, cloves and patchouli give it that smoky earthiness.

A flawless creation. 10/10

Not everyone's cup of tea - however, smell it in the air then you will truly know if you like it or not.

brokesta911

Frederic Malle the Promise (2017) - animalic rose - #dominiqueropion starts the perfume with crisp Green Apple, Pink Pepper and morphs quickly its Rose heart. The floral component is rich and complex, combining dewy, jammy and fruit elements of Rose. I also get immediately the woody Cypriol base - earthy, camphor, pine, and animalic. The drydown has a strong Patchouli note combined with this smoky Labdanum and amber base. I have quite a few middle eastern inspired french perfume and this Ropion creates brings out Rose in all its glory.

Mr. Boston

Jammy earthy rose with castoreum and ambroxan. Just enough animalic bite to make it interesting but not overpowering. One of the sexiest things you will ever put your nose on. 10/10.

gummypepsi

Received my bottle today and I absolutely love this fragrance. Its certainly a multi-layered composition, showing many stages throughout its journey. The rose/apple combined with cypriol and castoreum really reminds me of certain creations from the house of Roja Parfums in the Gulf Collection. If this was in that line, it'd be right between Qatar and Kuwait with spices added on top. The rose and apple are quite jammy, almost syrup-like, enveloping other notes within each other. This is truly a masterful blend from Dominique Ropion. Its already starting to become one of my top favourite fragrances in my collection. Looks like I may need to get more FMs since this is my first one

Fragranooga

Doesn't necessarily smell just the same as Ecstasy from Tiziana Terenzi but it is definitely the same vibe and the same genre with many shared notes. Overall I think I like this a little better, it stays complex for longer than the TT does. Both are excellent piney, smokey, incensey scents though and I'm not sure this one is nearly $300 worth of better.

Splinter47

I've worn 3 sprays of this in Vegas summer heat and isn't very overwhelming as I thought it would it be. After asking my family's opinion they weren't put off by it.

Lasts me about 6 hours at least to my nose. It's been very easy for me to get nose blind by this.

I really enjoy this smell from initial spray; I get strong green apple that's been in a whiskey barrel vibes to me.

Phenomenal work by Dominique 👌👌

Hostonium

Not what I expected or wanted, it reminds me of a motel room in Yosemite; herbal, fresh showers, cool spice, a raging river in a forest. Mature and very masculine- Definitely not a unisex fragrance, I could imagine this on a 45+ year old man. I find the rosemary to be incredibly overpowering, smelling almost minty when first sprayed. I can confirm, though, that it is very long lasting. I’ve been trying to wash it off but to no avail. Anyways, I hate it on myself but I might give it to my dad.

Gday

@Mikeaveli thanks a lot for the clarity. 'preciate.
I just hope the label change doesn't mean it was reformulated.

Gday

Hello Frag-com,

I need help. Got a sample of this fragrance and ran out. Trying to get a full bottle but I'm confused with the two different bottle designs...

First one has the name of the fragrance inscribed on the bottle in Arabic alone, while the other has the name inscribed in Arabic and English.

Please, which is which? I don't wanna have to buy the wrong one.

Someone help please.

AMajeedQT

Earthy Rose.

Clean, fresh, soft rose, sweetened with with fresh apple without making it very sweet or fruity. A hefty dose of nagarmotha and patchouli add an earthy, dirt-like green depth to the scent. The castoreum is not over but adds a slight animalic muskiness to that earthy accord.

Rosey, earth, lightly-sweet, lightly-spicy, soft, dirt.

There is strong discrepancy between how it smells on paper versus on skin. Sweeter and rosier on paper, earthier and dirt-like on skin.

I like the scent but I do feel it is a bit overrated, especially when you factor in the price.

Unisex, mature, cooler weather wear.

"Like".

Belli9

the best scent ever, I can't even describe it

ionescu_ionut17

I did get 100ml in the end after going trough a 2ml sample. Will I regret? Probably, but I won’t sell the bottle.
Opening is harsh and does no justice to the fragrance. Later it will be taken under control of the rose and much stronger apple accord which makes it sweeter and a more likeable fragrance the background notes are what causes the hit and miss for me.

The experience of wearing it is difficult to describe, I like it and I don’t but I like it more than I don’t like it and that makes me wear it again and again.
It will last ages, 2 sprays for the day and skin scent after shower and so on.

It does well with compliments and sometimes when I can’t smell it people around notice it.

I got nothing to compare it with, I simply wish the opening wasn’t so hard to put in words to describe it because of how messy it is.

This is just something that won’t fit in terms with your nose straight away and even after a while it will make you doubt it or dislike it.. I don’t think it smells the same to the others around.

Sample first and maybe 50ml for the rest of your life, I don’t think I will be able to use 100ml for the rest of my life.

It’s good but it’s a puzzling one.

It’s a fragrance made by Dominique where he takes those complicated oil ingredients and makes something good out of it.

In celebration of my 500th review I chose to review promise by Fredrick Malle
It is a revolutionary scent by every aspect
I can’t talk about others but personally this scent changed my prospective on scents
Upon acquiring hundreds of fragrances this is the first scent that smells genuinely different in the cold weather and hot weather, Iam not talking about seasonal temperatures iam referring to cold closed rooms or open outside areas
The green crisp apples are one of a kind submerged with booze so dense you could’ve sworn it’s a barrel of fermented apples out of experience I assure you there was no shortcuts in the production of the scent it was carefully and masterfully put together
And yet again the combined power of malle/ropion led to a groundbreaking masterpiece

This perfume allows you to stand out from the crowd, It is confident, niche and luxurious. I received so many compliments with this and it lasts forever on the skin and clothes.

richmilton

@jgouvea you wore 5 sprays! You must of nuked your town lol

jgouvea

I wore Promise today. 5 sprays. 9 hours later and I am still getting compliments. I don’t usually get compliments on my perfume, but I got 3 today from random people. Great great fragrance! It smells dark and fresh at the same time.

PPAN

The patchouli and cypriol combo really reminds me of Roja H Aoud, and that is a compliment. For one third of the price I’m getting Roja vibe with really good ingredients. And an apple note on top. The apple is not rotten or green, it’s more like a sorbet form of apple where it’s tart but sweet, pulpy but in a way melted. I love this. It’s quite strong so i can imagine why it could give some wearers a bit of a headache, but other than that it’s beautiful.

abbieclark67

This is a beast perfume! LOVE everything about it!

shibinabraham

the scent is quite cloying and synthetic to my nose. Initially there is a strong note of a fermented apple which stays strong for some time and then comes the middle notes which i am guessing is the turkish rose as its offensively sweet and pungent with the ambroxan and patchouli at the base. as mentioned, it smells quite synthetic and is potent. There is hardly anything animalic here but if that is being referred to pungent and rotten parts of notes, then yes, it does smell so. Really long-lasting and has really good projection.

Promise is one of three in my new "sample service" from Frederic Malle.

I immediately hated it but gave it a chance. it starts with an almost offensive peppery apple. a wet, earthy rose unfurls, and all stages are grounded by Vicks VapoRub cypriol from top to very deep bottom. if that sounds odd, you're right. the final result transitions through charred leather and tar, yet somehow gets more and more fresh as it dries down. 12+ hours with it will fascinate you.

Promise is dark and masculine and heavy as it melts into becoming part of your skin. I'm not convinced you can't wear it in warmer weather, but easy on the sprays if you dare.

sh*t is goth and I'm here for it🤘

Opening is a bit harsh, drydown smells similar to Valentino uomo intense for me.. or in that category. Longevity is good, projection is decent, quality of ingredients no point mentioning what it’s usual from Frederic Malle. Would I buy a whole bottle? No.. 50ml? no.. it’s a good perfume, but don’t find it special enough to purchase one.

Promise, to me, is very astringent from the apple and cypriol notes, with a touch of sourness. It is not a jovial or easygoing wear, but it is confident, beautiful and aggressive. It will cut through a crowd of warmer, more vanillic and bloated fragrances, as it did when I sampled it among a bunch of other rum-vanilla-amber niches lingering on my forearms. The floral and herb notes read fougere to my nose, and paired atop a baseline this acidic, they increase the abrasiveness even more.

This is truly one of the most distinctive things I've ever smelled. I can't imagine a dupe encapsulating the acid, bite, and boozy quality of Promise in full spirit. It's also very smoothly blended without a lot of extra photosynthetic texture or contrasting notes. From opening to dry down, I'd judge this as a very masculine scent for a very maverick individual, or someone who loves a strong drink and is at home around powerful odors or machinery; Promise is undeniably striking, highly original, and powerful. Just a bit too sour for my taste.

cwavah

This is a very well done oud and animalic scent. ... so perfectly done.... I love it ... and very wearable

Unisex
10/10 in all categories.
2 sprays max. Period. It’s cypriol heavy and could literally choke people around you if you over spray.
Women love it on men and men love it on women.
Absolutely unique. Doesn’t remind me of anything similar.
Highly dependable wear and Justifies price tag

Tried a micro drop (tester was empty and it says it all in my opinion) on my skin, thought I would never smell anything, and on my way home, all I could think of is « shall I order it online or go back to the store tomorrow so I have it sooner ? » 🤩

Maybe there is no oud but on my skin it smells as if my skin naturally smelled like rose and oud, it smells like my skin was one note of the scent composition…

What is the ultimate blending stage of a fragrance ? When all the notes are so exquisitely well blended that it melts into your skin

Monsieur Ropion I love you 💋

catgotnose

Strong apple cider.
Apple is the main note. I get it from start to end and it is ripe. I don’t get much rose. And of course the strong cypriol. It is dark, sweet and sticky. It is original. I don’t know anything smell like this. It is so potent, sillage is huge, longevity eternal. Two sprays are more than enough. Just like other desert gems.
If you are into dark staff, you can enjoy it. But it is not an easy wear. I can’t wear it every day. I cant also say that it is a pleasant scent. But it is original and quirky. If you were not a collector, you wouldn’t enjoy it much. And I think it is impossible for me to finish the bottle.
But for what it is, I am gonna give 7/10.

Nzerjav

One of my favorites from FM! Unique offering and a solid interpretation of eastern unisex perfume. Beautiful apple and rose accord atop an oily labdanum/cypriol base. No oud in this one. Performance is astonishing and can be smelled after bathing if sprayed directly onto skin. Opens with crisp apple and roses and as the mid-base becomes more apparent the apple begins to fade and give way to the relationship between the rose accord and the labdanum/cypriol. This will then persist for hours to come. As the top notes fade and base dominates, I notice a ‘dryness’ the fragrance can hint at that can be a bit boring towards the end.
Overall a great choice if you are a fan of this kind of perfume. If you are looking for a safe blind buy this may not be your best choice!

I went to the local store today to try out this perfume after having read so many positive reviews. Unfortunately there was no tester available so I tried four other FM perfumes. When I decided to buy Dawn, it was out of stock so in the end I decided to blind buy. Wanted the 100ml bottle (as per ml price is cheaper, lol) but only 50ml was available. Came home to try it and I totally regretted it. Regretted not being able to buy the 100 ml bottle that is. Really love the juice here. No oud here? So what? As long as the perfume performs according to my expectations, I couldn’t careless what’s in it, natural or synthetic, blah blah blah. From what I read, this lasts over 24 hrs. Bliss! Medicinal? Yes! It helps make my breathing clearer. Perfume makes you smell better. An even better perfume improves your breathing. Lol
Edit. Though the perfume really does last longer than 24hrs, my favorite part of it was only the first three-four hrs.

Mak-7

Desert gems line is very curious. Some frags are really nice, some, even though priced high, have chemically smelling undertones (Moon i look at you).
Promise could have been pretty good actually, since it posses a very interesting aquatic tone to its notes. Apple, which on me turns more like dark berries, smells how a berry compote tastes. It is strong but cold and moist. Then rose appears with some woods, but again it is a pretty lively rose one could enjoy during cold mornings. What kills the frag is ambroxan (boooo). I hoped that Ropeon wouldnt follow the herd but he did. Ambroxan is too strong and all other notes drown in it.
Ambrox is so strong that even after a 3 warm cycle wash my tshirt reeked of it, so i had to re-wash it(perfume was applied to skin)
A hard pass unfortunately.

CyberHiker

THE winter fragrance for me! On my skin the green apple dies down very quickly and the heart rose notes come out quite clearly. The base notes then reveal themselves and it starts to smell like an oriental pine forest doused in gasoline, reminiscent of Philip B's Nordic Wood Shampoo. I like to spray on my clothes as well, which keeps the green apple in tact for longer.

It's a unique declaration of "I'm here and I have an opinion".

Your mileage may vary, but I find that 3 sprays does the trick for long lasting and not overwhelming scent.

inbnk WP

All 26 peoples voted for very weak should go to check your brain in part of olfactory bulb or your whole brain. It's ridiculous.

Itsalladream

This is one of those scents that wears you...

Exceptionally strong, unapologetically bold, and beautifully refined.

I personally can only wear this in the winter, as all other seasons can't contain this beast. The colder it is the better.

Two sprays max and I get a solid 12+ hrs of wear. Anything higher than two and it becomes rather suffocating, so be mindful of the trigger.

The opening has this very unique apple/metallic smell, that sounds like an odd combination but it works so well. This part is unfortunately rather brief as I find it lasts around 1/1.5 hours before a gorgeous heart begins to take shape.

The heart of the fragrance is undoubtedly rose based. I can't comment on the nuances of different roses, but I definitely feel a POAL similarity here which simply outstanding. This lasts around 3-4 hours before the base takes over.

All I really get in the base is cypriol. Maybe some mild ambroxan coupled with an animalic tinge, but the cypriol is what is essentially driving this fragrance. The cypriol note is there hiding in he background from the first spray, but as the layers of the fragrance evolve you start to understand what makes this fragrance so damn strong (cypriol).

When I want to make a rather impactful presence in the colder months, this what I reach for.

9.9/10 because its so damn loud it is kind of limiting in its usage. Other than its unbridled strength, this fragrance is simply marvelous!

Promise is literally the definition of BEAST MODE, lasts on clothes for at least 3 days. It is a very heavy scent that is not for everyday use imo. The rose really shines, it’s kind of like a dusty rose to me. It’s beautiful, it’s unique, & definitely unisex. This perfume has a very big personality so tread with caution. I imagine this will last ages with me since you don’t need a lot of sprays or it will literally choke you & the whole room out.

Enrium

Promise is the final Desert Gem for me to review. A reprieve from the intense oud note that dominates the others, the Eastern inspiration is still present, but this time more Far East than Middle East. The best price point of the Desert Gems, Promise has its moments, but it is regrettably not for me.

Promise opens with a vibrant fruity note - apple, complemented by a hint of pink pepper. It quickly turns herbal, with rosemary coming to the fore. It really doesn't work for me here - it simply reminds me of a roast pork dinner, namely the apple sauce, stuffing and a sprig of rosemary - never something I aim for with my perfume! The cloves don't help the matter. It segues from dinner to medicinal - reminiscent of traditional Chinese herbal remedies, as luminaries below points out, which isn't a good thing in the context of perfume.

The emergence of the rose note at the heart of Promise is a welcome development, and the clove note complements it, adding warm spice. The mossy drydown is the best part of Promise, with rose becoming stronger, bolstered by amber notes and just the right amount of patchouli. Unfortunately, the rosemary prevails, and so Promise never manages to shake off its herbal weirdness. Like the rest of the Desert Gems, Promise is masculine-leaning with powerful performance and longevity.

I expected woody-spicy-apple goodness, and instead was served Sunday dinner with a side of Eastern medicine. It is unlike any perfume I have smelled, and I appreciate its originality. However, this one's a miss for me. I can't believe I'm saying this, but the Ropion creations are my least favourite of the Desert Gems. 1.5/5.

Haris84

Again if we talk about FM there is no surprise about FM PROMISE. Excellent scent with beast performance. PROMISE Purely defines the middle eastern vibes. Today I'm wearing this piece of art and imagine in Dubai where there is least chances of rain and today the last day of 2021 and its raining all around. WAOOO
Super combination of rainy day & FM PROMISE.
DOMINIQUE ROPION did it again as he keeps doing such wonderful things :)

Holly apple shisha! This exquisite fragrance made me feel the way that I felt the first time I discovered the house of Amouage in their early days. Brilliant composition! My second bottle is already on it's way.

heytherehols

The best way I can describe this fragrance is intriguing. This scent evokes nostalgia while also being one of the most unique fragrances I've sampled. The crisp peppery apple opening is bold, and instantly transports you to the bright and colorful autumns on the east coast. I think the nostalgia of this scent comes from the nagarmotha, which when paired with the apple and clove, takes me back to the smell of a dew-laden morning at an apple festival. It smells like footpaths coated in straw that lead you to pots of bubbling spiced apple cider. Around 10 minutes in the rose begins to gently emerge and the brightness slowly begins to dissipate being replaced by a subtly powdery rose. I find that on my skin it gets a little soapy, and I don't find I particularly enjoy that. I personally find it a little too cloying to wear.

All this being said, I love smelling it, but that's about as far as my love for this goes. I think it would make a much better candle than perfume for me. It's absolutely one of the most interesting scents I have ever encountered and I think about it often, however I just don't find it wearable.

DuncanPL

Smells like Zoologists' Rhinoceros 2020 and PDM Layton's child :P

frag-overdose

This is nothing like I have smelled before. Very surprising and pleasantly delightful! This effervescent woody apple smelling perfume is something new to my nose. Promise is robust and powerful. A single spray would make you stay fragrant for hours with great projection. For over sprayer like me, two sprays would be just enough.

luminaries

A little bit of a wildcard for me, but even if I won't wear something, I still do love to smell it. I also really enjoy the Arabic calligraphy on the bottles of this collection, as I've always loved the history and art form of Arabic calligraphy. At first spray, I get the apple note, but it's more of an idea of fruitiness that is quickly overwhelmed by the rosemary and then a strong medicinal smell. Not medicinal in a Western way, but more like a Chinese herbal solution. There are many notes to this perfume, but the Nagarmotha is the one that I smell the most and for the longest time. In fact, this is more of a wood and incense perfume than a floral one as I barely get the rose until the dry down and even then it's faint. It's a beautiful, heavy and unisex fragrance. Its longevity cannot be measured in hours, but in days and its sillage is a nuclear bomb.

IamdrinkingBeer

High quality, and remids me of apple somersby drink, a thick and rich smell for sure, but in the end, simply not for me. This is too strong and cloying for my taste, so i don't think arabic style fragrance is my thing at all. For those who enjoy it, i would say go and get yourself a bottle/decant, cause the quality is astonishing indeed. Even 1 spray can be too much in some cases, so be very careful!

Luis Fragrance

Just bought this today so good this one promise and the moon are the most were able from the desert gems collection. They all last a very long time in projection

SeanRowley

Nuclear protection

No oud noted but definitely leaning oud rose middle Eastern, gorgeous apple and powdery notes wrapped up to make a gorgeous, offensive fragrance, 1 or 2 sprays is all you need for a full day's worth.

Very nice 👌

Markos

One spray, you are ready to play.
Two sprays, you will smell your clothes for days.
Three sprays, you and your partner go separate ways.

I’m the girl mentioned in the previous review. I like earthy-incense fragrances, and my friend smelled really damn good. The scent readily infused into my shirt, my car, and my skin, but that scent echo faded fairly quickly. The sillage, at the time I encountered it, was pleasantly noticeable but not at all overwhelming. It seemed to sort of come and go, and I lost count of the number of times I caught myself thinking, “ooh, something smells nice.”

All I’m gonna say is that it was distracting in only the best way.

Serpentarian

I applied a single spray around 8 in the morning, couldn't smell it by noon, was told by my friend 10 hours later that her shirt still smells like my cologne. This is my first olfactive fatigue experience. The fragrance itself is absolutely gorgeous btw.

Tsvetomir Venchov

This is WOW! Hard to make a review! Far above the criticism! Too expensive for me but I’d go for the 10 ml travel size atomizer. Unfortunately it was sold out at the local retailer.

Mahogany

If you love smokey, incense, woody, oud, hint of rose (mostly in the drydown), then this is your jam. Went to Nordstrom to test it on paper...it's day 5 and I still smell it. I think the cypriol oil gives it the powdery incense element that lingers and caresses. What the what?! It's heavy, unisex and lasts for days, weeks even [I suspect]. I have Maison Lancome's L'autre Oud and it's much sweeter than Promise. Promise's silage is about a mile, just a beast of a fragrance. One spray (yes, ONE) will probably last all day. Give it a try first...and a few times, not a safe blind buy. Saving all my coins for this one.

Distantspring

This is a (rather expensive) demonstration of an important concept in relation to 'oud' perfumes. Because natural oud is so expensive and rare (and time consuming to produce, requiring a specific fungal infection of a certain tree and for the resulting interaction to persist over a number of years) the vast majority of western (and eastern) 'oud' perfumes don't contain any oud oil at all. (Incidentally, sandalwood, which is itself a parasite of other plants, is also difficult to cultivate for similar reasons). I can only assume that Promise is Malle's way of showing at least one way in which such a faux oud can be created by cutting a scent with cypriol, a species of aromatic sedge, which gives a sour-ish, woody, slightly gasoline-like quality to this and a number of other 'oud'-like perfumes. Promise shows Ropion's total mastery even of this occasionally spurned genre.

I really didn't care for Promise on first spray, but I have since grown to appreciate and even truly love it. Promise opens with a flurry of that sharp cypriol note, but (astoundingly) the scent actually leans into this by pairing it with a very tart, uncompromising apple that has been cut by a steel blade. This makes for an opening which feels very harsh and unapologetic, but a very subtle transition occurs within the first couple of minutes. The sourness, especially when worn in the heat, suddenly starts to feel a little more like wet tropicality, as the rose just barely pushes to the surface like a worried diplomat. While this floral side does give some reprieve from the scent's strong bite, the sour scent persists, only now it implies a kind of bright freshness and post-rain clarity where previously it felt like being stabbed with a blunt instrument.

In the mid, promise smells paradoxically both warming and cooling, dry and wet. The image it conjures to mind is of some kind of object which has burned up in a tropical forest, gone out and turned into ashes, which have since fertilised the area and yielded lots of sharply fresh new plants. There's a distinctive volcanism, blue skies, stone temples, sharp fruit and burning trees. The rose continues to flit in and out of notice for me (sort of a shame that it was apparently an expensive variety as the cypriol really dominates it). After the opening the scent goes on this sour, pomaceous burning and quenching cycle for the rest of its >10 hour lifespan. It has subtle elements of peat and dusty clay earthenware.

It's a great scent, but very expensive and I'm not sure I like it quite enough to justify the price. I think it would be appropriate for pretty much anyone in any season, but I particularly like how it gives a damp shade effect in the hot weather. If you like 'oud', whatever that means, or piercing florals in general, see if you can find a sample online.
Edit: 2 notes: This has really grown on me and spending more time with it the rose only grows more and more obvious on later wearings.

Fragranceluva4u

All I can say is, this gets me compliments immediately. The second I walk in somewhere, I’m asked what am I wearing

SimplDude

There's a lot going on in this beautfiul fragrance that confuses my nose and that confusion makes it unique. Its one of the fragrance characters I was looking for. Yes it's chaotic as what the other reviewers have mentioned here and I second that but I also get that gourmandy vibe because of the apple note which I like. This amazing juice got me nose blinded easily which means this is really strong. True enough, half an hour after I sprayed a couple small spritz on my left wrist, I can catch a whiff of it every now and then, as the scent trail kind of surrounds me wherever I go inside my house. I have to wear this soon and see how others react.

To be continued ...

As of now, I would rate this juice a 9/10

“Let us spread the scents of peace and kindness. The two most beautiful fragrance in the world that will cost you nothing and will get you a totally different kind of compliments” 🙏

soroush_mgh

Apple cider 🍺 in a bottle! I like it!

rah_per

This one is a POWER HOUSE of all perfumes, LOVE IT!
I own more than 100 perfumes but this one is just beautiful.
Thank you Shannon from Bellevue sq. mall for introducing me to this gorgeous smell.

sam.stockholm

Man this is an amazing perfume that is so soothing to smell on yourself and people seems to always ask me what is it that I am wearing. I highly recommend it and its going to my top 5 perfumes of all time. I love it.

Don Pitralon

This is absolutely heavenly smell, very very Arabic, I feel like being transported to Dubai Mall straight away. I cannot describe what I like the most, as with some of the best fragrances in my collection, its all about the blend, the sum is greater than its parts. Frederic Malle continues to amaze and shows how the top luxurious perfumery should smell like. Just spray it, buckle up and enjoy the ride.

marto96

One of the best things I have ever smelled in my live. This is so polarising, distinctive and extremely powerful fragrance. Every time I wear this I feel like a royalty! This is a turning head smell!

pauladeyemo

This is beautiful. Reminds me a lot of 'Riviere' by Thameen except this has an amazing apple in the opening and is more smooth and less cloying. Performance is incredible. 2-3 sprays you are good to go.

executer92

Performance is illegal, sometimes I laugh when I read comments that some scent's are so long lasting or projecting like a beast but after trying I cannot relate to that. But this oh boy, you can spray at 7am, take a single shower or five or jump into bath of another perfume and still this wont go away untill next morning. Actually after shower this became even stronger.
Someone described it perfectly as Darkness and that's how I percieve it too, Mr Ropion is just a master of his craft.
Funny enough I recieved multiple compliments in the summer heat with this one with more than 3 sprays so even it's a strong dark fragrance it looks like people percieve it quite well even outside of cold climate

aaronmilic

I truly get the hype for this. The apple opening is really nice. It definitely lasts and projects nicely. Just not sure I need anymore Oud/Rose combos in my collection.

Nathan__jamesj

𝘚𝘩𝘦 𝘸𝘢𝘴 𝘤𝘩𝘢𝘰𝘴 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘣𝘦𝘢𝘶𝘵𝘺 𝘪𝘯𝘵𝘦𝘳𝘵𝘸𝘪𝘯𝘦𝘥. 𝘈 𝘵𝘰𝘳𝘯𝘢𝘥𝘰 𝘰𝘧 𝘳𝘰𝘴𝘦𝘴 𝘧𝘳𝘰𝘮 𝘥𝘪𝘷𝘪𝘯𝘦.

To me the above quote so perfectly sums up the chaotic experience that is Promise. In those opening moments the fragrance rises up and hits you in the face with a sharp and boozy apple lifted by aromatic pink pepper and clove, against the herbal coolness of rosemary. As the fragrance settles on the skin a heady blend of Bulgarian and Turkish rose surface, adding rich floral intensity as Ropion utilises the rose in a similar fashion here as in his earlier masterpiece, Portrait of a Lady. The rose is excessive, dark and green with the overall impression pushed into entirely more animalic territory by the addition of cypriol and castoreum. As Promise moves further into the dry down hints of labdanum and patchouli appear grounding the fragrance in a deep earthy base until the end. Promise is dark, captivating, and above all Promise is beautifully chaotic.

Promise was the second release (and most accessible) from Malle’s Desert Gems collection. A series of fragrances (currently consisting of 4) designed for and inspired by the Middle East. This is evident in Promise. It feels distinctly Middle Eastern. It’s as if Ropion has reworked POAL for the Middle East, removing the sweetness and warm spices in place of sharp apple, and intense animalic notes as cypriol and castoreum recreate the ‘feel’ of oud in its absence. I would go so far as to say Promise is a masterpiece. It’s definitely unique and I think there’s a lot to be said for a fragrance that truly can be unique in what is an increasingly saturated market. So if you haven’t yet tried Promise, I highly recommend getting your nose on this ASAP as you are missing out on something exquisite.

In terms of performance this is an absolute beast. A few sprays lasts in excess of 10 hours and will easily fill a room. Simply, this is a head turner.

Jackcarter92

Magnificent perfumery, the green apple is so apparent but so dark full bodied, brandy type vibe. Dominique Ropion has for sure smashed this one!

Bought the 50ml, as I can never see anyone getting through a full 100ml of this.

I have to say this is a love or hate fragrance not one you can be on the fence about.

Certainly will get you noticed.

As projection and longevity go, if you to heavy handed on the sprayer, you could blind someone with this. It is no Joke!

IAmStaka

This is simply a stunning masterpiece! It's really nice. Fall King/Queen?
Has nothing to do with Chergui, which I own 3 bottles of and love as well.

perfume4everyone

Don't believe the hype about its performances, it is not beast at all.
I have bought it at official retailer, and i have it for almost 3 months, great scent, all the way green apple and roses, on the opening it feels like there is oud even it is not listed in the notes. But performances very poor on me, longevity about 6 hours with meeeh projection in the first hour. This has been reformulated already. Try it on your skin first.

elGonzo

Montale on steroids.

After trying some perfumes including (supposedly) natural Oud this offering from FM leaves me completely underwhelmed by its quality and composition. Not of course by its performance, which is almost offensive.
At 390$ for 100ml I'd much rather go with any of the Kemi line: I've tried only a couple and I'm not a fan but the quality is clearly superior. Even some Montale are less agressively with aroma-chemicals at 1/4 of the price.

-----------------

karolisjachimavicius

The first notes that I smelled where the fruity ones and they smelled like a superb bubble gum. I've been browsing the shop for smth playful like this. So I fell in love with the fruity wild strawberry smell. They say it's apple, but I scent loads of wild strawberry. It's also the leaves and the soil. The deep earthy notes I noticed only having come back home after buying a bottle. The reviewer Roxette is right - it can remind you of something old. A grandma, a swamp, soil, beaver's ass. When I get all the smells, it's like a dessert on a shore of the lake after a hard day's work, reminds me of my late uncle who'd work through days shirtless on the fields, tanning deep and reeking and then eating the dinner slowly. It's definitely a controversial, paradoxal and multifaced perfume. I'm enjoying it on my arms now. My father said I got it overpoured and got the car exploding. It was like six sprays all over the body. The price reflects it's complex character and abundant experience you get, I browsed whole lotta perfumes for ~150 euro and it's just another class, it def stands out. Besides the fruit and the soil, don't forget the grassiness, it can hit you with a sharp grassy grass outfield angle.

HackerX

Yeah, this stuff is absolutely nuclear, atomic! 2 sprays usually last and project strongly for at least 10 hours. I recently made the mistake of wearing 5 sprays of this and went hiking. A few people said my perfume was really strong on the hiking trail lol. I knew this stuff is nuclear, but when it lingers and projects outdoors you know it is a weapon of mass destruction! Do no more than 2 sprays, this is one of those scents that less is definitely more if you know what I mean, with 1 or 2 sprays you will actually get compliments (I have received compliments on this numerous times), but anything more than 2-3 sprays would have the police on your tail.

espoj

who said the performance is poor??? im looking at you perfume4evryone!!!!! its fricken nuclear. still beaming of my skin 20 hours later. was projecting for at least 12 before settling down!!!

jero

Smells divine! You can detect the Arabian vibe in this Ropion's treasure, meanwhile, its transparency and high class is the most quality seven veils marked Frederic Malle, different to Amouage's heavy in amorous. If man is talking about "the blue beast" Interlude, this is to a higher level in gold when talks about longevity and silliage.

Cypriol oil strong. I'm not into green things in olfactory, though I'm a natural born green lover and have ate lots vegetables. Green Tea is always that full, and people say Cologne Rare is truely stunning in green I have the least interest to check out. Here cypriol gives you the greeny, in darker shade, not that vegan, and with a trail of animalic.

I can't afford it, I should never make my mind to spend like this on a bottle called fragrant vanities, it's only a fragrance and I can't stop but going on my most expensive and beautiful imaginary jounery.

recherche

Got a sample of this. Not for everyone. Don't blind buy it. After reading some reviews, I see many people like it. I find it odious. It smells like an astronomical collision of Tom Ford's Patchouli Absolu, Tuscan Leather, and the original Estée Lauder's Aliage. Patchouli, patchouli, fern, oakmoss, and, did I mention patchouli? (I love patchouli, but this one is TNT). Sillage is all the way to the Moon and longevity...you'll need Brillo pads and Mr. Clean to get rid of this scent. Again, don't blind buy it. You will love it or detest it in perpetuity throughout the Universe. In one word: SAVAGE (whichever way you define such).

Roxette

Please don’t blind buy this. I almost did it but I was smart enough to sample first. Smells strong, loud, exaggerated, but....it smells like my grandma old, musty room back in Eastern Europe. It’s “old”, strong, almost like “scratch me off immediately” perfume. Ughh! Thank goodness I didn’t buy the whole bottle!

This is atomic, holy moly. One of the greenest, fullest rose scents I've ever come across and I'm a massive rose fan. This is so warm and comforting that it's quite hard to describe. It's like drinking your favourite spirit and getting that warmth in your chest that just stays there whilst you enjoy the moment.

Absolutely not sweet in any way to me, slightly fresh in a strange way which I think is the apple/clove/rosemary meshing together. Everyone knows the Rose and Patchouli combination, but I think this is probably the best on the market, regardless of the price.

I semi-blindbought it on trusted recommendations and 5 minutes of smelling in the retail store and i’m not dissapointed.

Pure middleeastern magic in a bottle. I usually dislike rose strongly and Mr Ropion made me like it. Even two kinds of roses!

Projection and longevity is the equivalent of Tjernobyl on my skin. 2 sprays lasts forever and projects enormously for a full day and then some more.

This is definitely one of the most beastly fragrances that I have ever smelled. I imagine this would be a perfect smell for a colonial emperor.

To me its a very well refined experience. It smells dense and heavy. One spray on your cloth is enough for days and days. I literally sprayed it on my hand once and it was stuck there even after I took a 2 showers. I also tried once on my cotton jacket and it penetrate the cloth to stick to my shirt and project from that shirt for days. The sillage and projection are intense and will definitely fell the room. You shall not use this in a confined environment or an office sitting. I dont know whats the concentration here but I have tried pure perfume oil and extrait de Parfum concentration but they werent as beefy as this one. I am an over-sprayer usually and would go even with 15 sprays with some fragrances but with this one I would suggest only one spray. I cannot say that about many fragrances.

The scent profile is very unique. Its somehow reminiscent of Carlisle from Parfums De Marly or Red Tobacco from Mancera but it acts even more beastly than those. The difference is that the aforementioned fragrances use oud and tobacco and this one uses cypriol oil. There are some animalic nuances here, the labdanum gives it a smooth smoke kind of vibe, the patchouli is strong and earthey, and the apple here is so green and crisp. This is so well blended. I dont know of any other fragrance using cypriol that are as good as this one. It also has some boozy / malty vibe in the background. You shall wear this only during the colder days and it would be perfect for formal sittings. This cannot be pulled off wearing shorts and a t-shirt.

If I was to describe how is smells, I would say that its like the sweat of an ancient roman gladiator fighting a wild lion with his hands. I know that might seem off putting. This is niche quality at its best.

The suggested price in my country, Bahrain, is 300$ for a 100 ML bottle and 215 $ for 50 ML. The price / ml for the larger size is better but I suspect this would last for years with you, so maybe the 50 ML bottle will be sufficient.

Smells great

Did the Master Perfumer(Mr. Ropion) make a masterpiece? The luxury is there, it is unique and exceptional quality. For all perfume aficionados it is a must try if not must own. The apple note is indeed the most prominent and the other notes support and enhance this even though FM actually markets this frag as a rose. The smell is reminiscent of a high end sparkling cider. Instead of patchouli I wonder how high quality oud would have changed the smell? Possibly that was intentionally reserved for the other more expensive dessert gems. So it is a masterpiece and for someone - signature scent worthy. However it is not that for me but it is bottle worthy and 9/`10

I own over 100 bottles and this is the only one I have a backup bottle of. Thats how much I love it. I wear it year round. I even wore it in Cancun in the middle of the summer (nights).

Dandyman

Apple, rose & castoreum.
Let me translate that for you:
Fruit, flower & animalic.
Projection: crazy.
Longevity: crazy.
This is unisex, i would say. (But butch).
You can go for this desert gem when you want a challenge.
Make sure to discover a couple of other F Malles before this one. (Talking about the regular line, start of with some of them).
No blind buy, por favor.

It's really good! But yeah, a.) apple apple apple and b.) while the former, it's not distinguishable from other rose ouds. Top quality, lacking much individuality! Worth a try tho, because there is fruitiness! I love it, btw.

Azoz

it is apple apple apple form the start to the finish but hard to smell other notes.
its long lasting
overall to me 6/10

roseyessence

This is giving me Tiziani Terenzi Ursa Vibes. I promise you. That well blended fruity, ash tray, patchouli vibes.

A.Bandini

Not my cup of tea as its expectedly very middle eastern. The rose and cypriol oil dominate along with the animalic aspect which gives off an oudy vibe. To me very similar to Byredos Oud Immortel.

FilipMurray

The Night, Dawn, The Moon and Promise.
I think the appropriate name for Promise would be Darkness.

The opening is like a freshly painted laboratory with some crazy alchemist drinking apple brandy.
After just few minutes, that feeling disappears and then you can smell apples, roses and I believe Nagarmotha.

Drydown is full of labdanum. It literally suffocates how strong it is. I'm an oversprayer, but I can't do more than 2-3 sprays without consequences - nausea and headache.

This scent is the definition of a dark scent. I can imagine Sauron, Voldemort, Darth Vader and other villains smelling like this perfume.

Great oriental fragrance from my favorite house and from my favorite - Mr. Ropion.

Longevity: one week
Aura: 800 meters

Now seriously, 3 sprays are enough for at least whole day and everyone who has a nose in the room will smell you.

Skie763

I’m sorry. I know there are many who love this but all I get is insect repellent. Raid to be exact. I don’t smell apple, rose or anything else. Just raid.

THIS, is perfume. quickly I ensured myself of two flacons. the parcel came in and the perfume was smellable terminus post quem, from THAT period. the flacon wasn't even open, even not the parcel ! I found that such a characteristic for the perfume and of course for Domique Ropion. then I spritzed the first spritz. I found myself glueed to my pulse. the first and one would say (especially in the beginning) note one smells is cypriol, big, major. this is not a Heidi-on-the-Mountain perfume. I must say it took hours that day to discover any other note but twelve hour in I could smell the loveliest roses de Mai. and were they pervasive ! I also detected the castoreum and the clove-oil. these first impressions (hours in) did won the perfume for me to the max. I also found it a very unusual perfume. there are some similarities (they are not clones) with Dusitas 'Oudh Infini'. not a 'je ne sais quoi' but a [fuck you fuck me] attitude. Ropions 'Portrait of a Lady', 'Carnal Flower', 'Cologne Indelibile' (for my straight twinbrother) and 'Monsieur'; 'Fleur de Cassie' show the same intransigence which i do so, so love. for one parfumista [the scented salamander ?; Çafleurebon ?] this was 'the rose from Hell'. 'approach it with witchcraft and spells'.... thát perfume can still bewitch me after all those years (from 1975).

So.. What should I say? I'm thorn between two opinions about this scent.
It's very original, smells different and it's floral, I can smell that oudy feel to it after the dry down.
Now how does it work for me ... It starts very floral, and I love it... 30 minutes in it starts to smell like a bar where smoking is allowed.. Like when you go to have few drinks in that small hidden bar where smoking is still allowed and you come back home and you smell like cigarettes and alcohol. This is the few hours in smell. After all 3h it smells like a combination between citrus and synthetic oud... Exactly like Byredo Oud Immortel... Like exactly the same after 4h.. Lemons and synthetic oud...
Not bad, different and unique... But too familiar to an ashtray and a Byredo fragrance...

I have all four Desert Gems and three of them are all among my absolute favorite scents, but for Promise, which I just can not stand. I have tried it now for a few times and every time I´ve had to wash it off. Cloying and headache inducing to me. I get the apple, but there´s also a chemical note that I strongly disklike. Can´t say if it´s the cypriol oil or something else. Not for me.

BlueBull

الوعد
This is how creativity must be, ok let people say it smells like bla bla bla, but tbh nothing like this.
I tried it before 1 year, my mind was saying this is unique just wait and try to understand.
I was searching for a safe scents on that day so I wasn’t thinking of having it.
Before 2 weeks, I was drinking my coffee to focus on what I’m missing in my collection, I realize that I need something to cross the line in a good way, after too many searches,
الوعد comes in mind, I sprayed it on my wrist and I leave the store.
It’s growing again and again & I’m enjoying.
Buuuuffffff
OOOOMMMGGGGGGGGG this isssss rareeee, I neeeed it right now.
I went back to the store and grab a bottle from heaven.
Not for everyone.

Fragranceluva4u

The apple and spice that I get in the opening is simply magnificent. After and hour or so it dries down into a beautiful but yet typical middle eastern type scent. You only need two sprays otherwise it can be headache inducing.

Overall rating 8/10

ts4r

A rebel amongst the desert gems, not containing oud but out-shining most of the collection except The Moon.

Not for everyone, but then again neither is a fine wine. Cypriol and green apple lovers must try this. The apple is very crisp and not too sweet like compositions such as Layton or Hugo Boss Private Accord.

Try before you buy, nothing more to be said about this masterpiece.

10/10

shavasana

This fragrance is an absolute masterpiece. Worth every penny. One of the few fragrances that made tears well up in my eyes.

You need a certain level of elegance and sophistication to pull it off, however. I’m a man in his late 20’s, and I didn’t do it justice. I gave it to my grandmother, and it is absolutely stunning on her. Perfectly blended. The apple, the cypriol, the spices, the hints of rose, and the castoreum - Dominique Ropion is an amazing talent, realizing what a magical composition they would make.

Probably the best sillage, longevity, and quality you could ask for in a fragrance. Literally lasts an entire day and makes its presence known without being obnoxious.

You really do get what you pay for. One of the closest things to perfection I’ve ever put my nose on.

10/10.

Obviously with a fragrance at this price point, try before you buy.

Ahmadboo

Worth every penny.
10/10
Don't blind buy it as it needs very special taste

mnitabach

This is one of my favorite Ropion creations! The super fruity green apple is so different & unexpected. BTW, as others have pointed out, pretty sure what people think of as oud note is combo of animalic castoreum w woody camphoraceous cypriol.
