Sun by Jil Sander is a Amber Floral fragrance for women. Sun was launched in 1989. The nose behind this fragrance is Pierre Bourdon. Top notes are Fruity Notes, African Orange Flower, Palisander Rosewood, Amalfi Lemon, Cassis and Bergamot; middle notes are Ylang-Ylang, Heliotrope, Carnation, Orris Root, Rose and Lily-of-the-Valley; base notes are Vanille, Benzoin, Amber, Tonka Bean, Sandalwood, Musk, Styrax, Tobacco Leaf and Patchouli.

This sunny fragrance was created in 1989. Citrussy top notes are just like the bright sunshine rays, sunny and fresh, composed of sweet orange blossom. The floral heart is an unusual bouquet of iris, ylang-ylang, heliotrope and carnation. The base is warm and sweet due to vanilla, while tonka, cedar and benzoin also lend their warm character to the composition.

It was a spring day turning to summer, one of those days when you just want to relax. I just failed an exam in uni and went for a coffee to commiserate with myself, my dying phone and a cigarette, postponing going home and facing reality. Broke, academically challenged, stupid and a bit heartbroken.

Got a papercut on my finger, and drew a heart on culprit in blood. Writing a poem in a shoddy notebook while the coffee was cooling. A bad day on paper, but I indulged entirely on purpose, realizing world wouldn't end today. My only other choice was to cry.

Bought this on a whim to remember that even on sad days the world doesn't end. F*ck it.

Onto the scent: a cheerful, sunscreen-y powder bomb.

It smells like I should be wearing hippie dresses, attending vinyl bars and drinking sparkling pina coladas on the beach. Vacation encapsulated. For my taste, it's too powdery. Bit sharp, syntheticky. But unique. A cool aunt perfume. I haven't any perfumes like this.

🏖️🐚🩴🦀🌊📿🪘🎶🌊🎷🏜️

I'll miss it. Still... it's time to let her go.

I tried this one on a strip of paper and it smelled like bug spray to me so I find it incredible that I love it on my skin. The opening is exactly like sun cream and it settles into a nice warm floral vanilla. Yes, there is something slightly old-fashioned about it but to me it's youthful, more so than many recent white floral/vanilla creations. If Flower by Kenzo is my favourite spring scent, this would be the perfect summer one. Given how simple and no-fuss the bottle is, I can already imagine bringing it around with me in my straw beach bag! Beautiful design, perfect blend and price that defies my wildest dreams. Will be exploring the flankers and the brand for sure. Makes me wonder how many perfumes I should try on my skin despite not liking them on the tester. Chemistry, eh?

soldier71

such a beauty! Unlike anything there; sun tan lotion, beach bodies, sunglasses and a boom box. beautiful vanillic amber, a little heliotrope, patch, powder, spicy carnations (the little ones, dianthus, not the big, red, supermarket kind) addictive, with attitude, loud and sexy....all the good stuff; I know many noses cannot understand, and appreciate, and that is fine, more for me :)

izzagood

Sun smells like Sunflower from Elizabeth Arden i remember from my childhood. It totally suits my taste but umfortumately doesn’t project at all:((

alx38

For those living in France, it smells EXACTLY like the Dessange Soin Patine Correction Couleur.
Sorry I can't find the english equivalent, if there is one.
It's really balmy and plasticky and smells more like a lotion than a perfume in my opinion. Sometimes I like it, sometimes meh... My boyfriend says I smell good when I wear it.

Loca del Tó

I blind bought it a few days ago, encouraged by the reviews that talked about a light version of Loulou. It has a certain resemblance, especially that synthetic and lovely plastic smell of new doll head. But let no one think that this is a Loulou dupe, because it is not at all. It is much more wearable, less gothic than Loulou, not at all dark and sexy, and more appropriate to wear during the day. I didn't know this perfume at the time, I think it wasn't popular in my country. So for me it has no nostalgic associations. They say it smells like European sunscreen, and I agree that it smells a little like sunscreen, but I didn't know that sunscreens in the USA smell different from the ones here. It smells more like makeup, lip balm, powder, moisturizer... I like it, but it is too sweet to use in the south of Spain at any time of year other than winter. It doesn't seem like a solar perfume to me, despite its name. I find it would be too cloying and sweet to wear this in the sun. It is not a gourmand, but it is sweet and vanillic. I don't like cloying fruitchoulies like La Vie Est Belle, Lady Million or Black Opium at all, and the sweetness of this perfume is right at the limit of my sugar tolerance, so keep that in mind if that's not your cup of tea. Strangely, it also reminds me of Revlon Ciara and Pani Walewska Gold, although these two are much more soapy and floral and have less powder and less amber and musk, and also those are more spring-like and more vintage than Sun. It seems to me to be an ageless perfume, although very 90's, appropriate for everyday situations, very cozy for when it's not hot and ironically, for when it's not sunny. You can see that this is meant to represent the sun of a northern country, a soft sun that barely warms. After all, it's German. Impossible to wear this under the Spanish sun in any time other than winter, or on some cool autumn days. The sillage is moderate, but right now it is not more than 12°C here. I suspect it will get huge above 25°C. The duration is very good. Excellent performance for the price (€12). It's going to last me a long time, because the weather won't allow me to use it too much, but I think I'll buy it again when it wears out. It is a feel good perfume to enjoy sitting on the sofa reading a book under a blanket and next to the heater. Another plus, the design of the bottle is beautiful and minimalist, very ahead of its time, making it great as a gift.

dvadesetivek

This was one of the best blind buys ever. The opening is quite fresh with a slightly spicy element. Later it dries down to a creamy, powdery fragrance that is very comforting and rich. To me, it smells really sophisticated.

LouLady

Finally found my signature. Love it more every day. May it never be discontinued

@musenkate - it's a good function of fragrantica to let users democratic decide which comments they are gonna vote for to keep & reward and which not. Get over with..btw this is a masterpiece, a gem of German perfumery, an icon. It smells a bit old school for some maybe but the fact is, it's a very complex and well blended niche quality fragrance which keep selling even almost 4 decades after the launch...FOR A REASON!! I personally can't imagine my 900+ perfume collection without it. Period.

musenkata

For me this fragrance is a Soapy mess!

I really don't understand why the negative reviews should be deleted as someone doesn't like them?!
They are opinions and removing them by voting is a discrimination!

This stops me to leave any reviews no matter positive or negative...

Belinda_Rose

I am huge fan of Fragantica, read eagerly all user's comments, research fragrances and owe more than 200 in my collection. My taste varies a lot and i am willing to tolerate huge palette of aromas. Having said that, i cannot stay opinionless about Jil Sander Sun....I have to admit very rarely hate a fragrance. Keep coming back to that one, giving it another chance and yet it smells like a cheap baby diapers. Its just terrible awful! Forget about the minimum silage and longevity. The combo is just intolerable. Make me really sick und would not use it even for a WC refresher...

kikolja

Now who didn't have this perfume? Everybody and their mama had one of these. It is a steal for the performance, longevity, and sillage it exudes. It was my first perfume, which I was gifted as a child, and it brings fond memories of spritzing it in the places I lived. My parents did not particularly appreciate the strong scents that whiffed around the house and I must say this perfume has a hefty ingredients list of flavors in comparison to the majority of perfumes.

M4rkéta

For me, the sun lotion scent is way too medicinal and the perfume doesn't last long. Real sun lotion smells better.

ekati

I smelled this on a friend a couple days ago. I have never smelled it before. I asked her what she was wearing because I loved it. Clean, powder smell and a cozy feeling.Maybe nothing special but sometimes we find the beauty in ordinary things.I ordered a bottle for me.

mimircks

When I originally smelled it in the duty free, I HAD to buy it on my way out of the country! DONE! Loved it...for a minute. We are now 4 months later & all I'm getting is....bug spray. WHAT happened to the fragrance I couldn't get enough of when I first bought it?! SUN edt has been demoted to a powder room spray. :(

scatteredshowers

The comparisons to Cacharel's LouLou were what I needed to push me over the edge. It was love at first sniff; Sun and LouLou could be sisters. I wouldn't call either of them a dupe for the other, but Sun satisfies my LouLou cravings when I'm in a frugal mood, or when the weather is too hot for heavy fragrances. And I will admit, Sun isn't exactly fresh, however the florals are just bright enough to make the scent feel warm like sunshine, rather than a crackling bonfire. It fits right in next to my other powders, bridging the seasonal gap between LouLou, Kenzo Flower, and Curve Crush. The spices are the strongest at first spray. I get a strong whiff of cloves that fades into sweet vanilla resin, then the spicy carnation comes out with the ylang-ylang and I start to feel like I really understand what the term 'yellow floral' means. The other notes aren't as strong to me; I get the sense that they're more there to balance the others, rather than stand on their own. This was an extremely successful blind buy, I'm very grateful.

farshvio

Smells nothing like sunscreen. I was hoping it would. It’s giving Jovan White Musk.

forestatdusk

This reminds me of the orange gelee sunscreen in the silver squeezer my mom used to bring with us in our beach bag to the community pool in the 80s when i was a little girl. This gives me those vibes of tanned bodies , long red fingernails , iced coffee , big sunglasses and a shiny blue pool full of people. No phones , no social media... just being in the moment in that summer sun with no worries.

lmnsvgz

The OG sunscreen scent. It smells like cream made from yellow and white florals. I love it

missloveschocolate

This has been my go to beach perfume for easy 15 years now. No other perfume can détrône it, I always have a bottle in my collection. It’s a definite love-hate one though. If you’re into the tropical Escada like perfumes for summer you’re probably gonna hate it. I’d say it demands some level of nose development and it’s absolutely stunning during the hot summer beach days. Wouldn’t wear it any other day though. It has this vintage touch, although it is not old or dusty. Forget about the lemon or flowers, for me it’s all about benzoin, styrax, wood and a touch of dried fruits. Wouldn’t want it any other way.

peachpony

While on a kick to try every perfume that came out my birth year I stumbled upon the bold yellow font of SUN highlighted against a stark milk glass. I decided I must try it and ordered myself a vintage miniature to see what kind of sun we are talking about here; the kind that reminds us of beaches and summer picnics, or the one that reminds us that the earth will eventually burn up because we are just orbiting around a giant ball of fire after all.

Well, I can luckily say that this is in fact a cheery little number. It's sweet and bubblegum without being cloying or childish. The more I wear it the more I find joy in it's vanilla/ benzoin base and I just know the styrax is working wonders in there somewhere. Heliotrope is of course playing a role here and I have an odd relationship with this note as I love it in concept, but I have a creeping suspicion one wrong turn could leave me avoiding it. For now I relish its powdery puff of sweet air.

Sun is summer, but not in the soleil / beach walk sunscreen vibe. I see a woman from the late 80's / 90's with big brown hair and a red one piece sitting on her lifeguard tower watching as the children below throw around a multi colored beach ball in the bright aqua community pool. This sun is bright and man-made. There's no sand or salty ocean waves here, but the image of tanning with oil / no SPF while "girls just want to have fun" plays on the radio next to you.

grafgr

I think Jil Sander's Sun is Royal Muska's slightly more extroverted and younger sister. They both have this tropical vibes plus neither-clean-nor-dirty sexy sexy musk and think they would be a good layering combo. Maybe the best things in life are budget-friendly, hmmm.

Czarcasm

This is quite a heavy and creamy scent for summer, yet it does fit summer. I quite like Sun despite it having been around longer than I have been.

It opens with a strong blend of fruits and flowers. The orange flower and cassis take center stage. Already I can smell the powdery orris root and the amber.
What stands out to me is that Sun remains almost the same fragrance throughout the day, it just becomes more muted as time goes on. The orange flower and cassis balance out with the other notes, but nothing else takes center stage after them.

Sun lasts for nearly the entire day on my skin, and personally I find it rather strong sillage wise. Sun is fairly inexpensive price wise, and it makes for great value.

Yes Malena

I blind-bought a small bottle online. The current formulation of this smells how I imagine/kinda remember(?) Sunflowers Elizabeth Arden to smell but maybe it's just the name prompting my brain there. I think I remember Sun from the past. I do smell this reformulation or something like it on people nowadays. Not my style, but I'm excited to try it again after it's rested for a season or two. Yellow flowers and dryer sheets musk, with a lot of fruitiness, like a plum perhaps.

Update: beautiful complexity, it's sweet and deep and loud, but it's also somehow peaceful. Very 90s incensey, but softly so; no shrieking.

Like a kinder, gentler Joop Femme.
Smells pleasantly like someone is smoking nearby.

msudersin

I blind bought this because I love Jil Sander fashion. But I regret it because it pulls too screechy and sun-screeny on me. I find the scent a bit dated.

aleckzandurh

Definitely more heavy and full-bodied than its breezy, beachy marketing would suggest. I like it though, and I can see the sunscreen comparison bearing in mind it’s a sunscreen from 1989~

The headiness of orange flower, ylang-ylang, and musk are the most prominent to me, grounded with piquant amber. It fades to a cozy and subtle vanilla amber situation. If I shove my nose to my wrist, I can make out the “plastic-y” quality that’s supposedly the benzoin… but it’s not particularly off-putting or noticeable.

Hartmutson

My favourite day to night scent for summer. Wonderfully super Feminine. The perfect late 80/90ies vibe. Start wearing from May, sunshine weather. Great compliment getter.

suzanne_ronald

SOLAR Powderbomb!... Signed by Pierre Bourdon (Iris Poudree Frederic Malle), this powdery vintage iris-vanilla scent with maple-walnut nuances opens with a burst of soft, sweet woody orange blossom that deepens into a buttery orris root & floral heart. There's a lot going on here, with heliotrope, ylang, carnation, lily of the valley and rose all suspended in orris butter. The blend of florals in buttery orris is all supported by a amber-vanilla base with maple walnut nuances from styrax & palisander rosewood. This needs a few weeks/months in dark storage after first sprays to develop the true scent and performance. While this didn't initially read 'beachy' to my nose, wearing it there will be no need for sun.

Contrast to Sun 30th Anniversary Edition Jil Sander:
These have been compared, and there is a similar DNA but side by side they're different, especially in the openings. Sun 30th Ann. Ed. is sunnier and more citrus forward, leaning to scents like Pure Poison Dior. There is a similarity in the bases, however, and the longer they dry down the more similar they become with Sun 30th leaning woody and Sun leaning amber. Both have well above average performance, although Sun 30th Ann. Ed has a louder brighter projecting opening.

Contrast to Sun Summer 2020:
These are different, but there is a similar DNA. Sun Summer 2020 leans more to carbonated coconut water with a little added fizz. Watery coconut and creamy tiare, supported in the background by a soft fizzy combo of aldehydes, grapefruit and patchouli settles out onto a musky ambrette base with clean touches from orange blossom. As it dries down it becomes similar to Sun 30th Anniv. Edition & Sun.

Contrast to Esprit d'Oscar Oscar de la Renta:
These are different but Sun has some similarities to Esprit d'Oscar, both being iris-vanilla forward scents. Esprit d'Oscar has a sharper opening that's more ylang-iris forward, but as it dries down becomes more similar to Sun. Esprit d'Oscar has a "perfume-y" quality while Sun leans to nutty-maple nuances.

Overall: This beautiful, unique Pierre Bourdon gem has great performance with a small scent bubble that adds versitility. This is the perfect scent to wear for making your own sunshine. It's a love for me. Enjoy!

adrianaz

I had a sample of it and liked it so much that I put it on my wishlist. I don’t like having lots of open perfume bottles so I’m always overthinking my purchases but after a long time of wanting this one, I caved and got the full size when it was on sale - but it’s SO awful?? I really don’t understand. It’s so heavy and completely different from what I remember (and my notes!!). I sprayed it on my wrist once and immediately sneezed. I felt a headache starting but thought I’d wait it out because surely SOMETHING must have been great about it and maybe I just didn’t like the base notes. But no. I agree with the person who said it smells like an Asia-Afro-Shop - for the first hour the smell reminded me of these corners at the Bazaar where my grandmother would buy spices, which is definitely not how I ever want to smell. I‘m confused about the reviews that say this is a clean or even simple smell, there is so much going on and none of it reminds me of sun cream, summer or anything light. Maybe it’s been reformulated?

GlamG17

This reminds me so much of my mum, that real summer scent from the 1990s. It has a slight baby oil smell for me but also a classic sun tan lotion smell. Not the tropical modern sunscreen smells of today but summers long ago. I’m in my thirties but totally appreciate this perfume for what it stands for. If you are after tropical or coconut notes this is not for you. Not a safe blind buy. I also think it has that powdery note of Lou Lou. This is good but I do prefer Sun Delight for that sun tan oil smell I so love.

rasteria

White and yellow flowers, vanilla, sunscreen. Dries down to strong sandalwood with some ambery notes

ramorariu

It smell sunflowers to me. Nice balsamic at affordable price. i use it often before going to sleep. It has a calming effect and somhow, it reminds me of my childhood.

Akesuts

Day time, clean yet complex scent. To me it smells soapy and a tad sweet but creamy on skin. Love it on cotton clothes. Performance is ok but you have to really spray it. Bathe in it even, so it will actually last longer.

Ellyloveswednesday

I love this scent for summer. I get warm, sweet, beachy sunlotion vibes. As others said it is strong so I use it sparingly. I got it as a gift so didn't know the price until now, and wow the value is great! I would definitely repurchase if I run out, but with 75ml I don't see that happening anytime soon.

Dani C.

About Jil Sander SUN: I don’t like the opening of this fragrance BUT if you are patient enough to wait ‘til the dry down you will end up with a creamy beachy ambery yellow floral fragrance. Really good performance for an EDT and is affordable too.

Youlerie

Uncomfortably pungent and synthetic to me. In the course of this I unfortunately get strong Asia-Afro-Shop vibes. Hard pass for me. Also reformulated to death?

Mystères du Château de Dé

Sun (for women) is a cousin to the current formulation of Calvin Klein Obsession for women. BerryRose below connects Sun to LouLou, and I smell that too. Was it designed to be a summer fragrance? The bottle and name suggests that use but it's Oriental or at least ambery, a kitchen sink of notes, synthetic, pretty, enameled and cool toned, for an Oriental. Very 80s and a great value at today's prices. Sun for Men has a fresh top and toned down mid and seems more appropriate for summer heat, though it doesn't seem all that summery, either.

SaraZigova

Definitely feminine

katarinamalik

Sun lotion vibe I just love. 90’s summer! It’s strong so no need to overuse. In small amounts it’s a gem ☀️

Annemieksken

I wear it every summer, a staple. Great value!

ViouAmara

It’s difficult for me to connect such a golden and balsamic fragrance to another season than fall.
I like the light sweet comfortable feeling on my skin. It’s cosy and cuddling. Not too heavy like other ambers can turn and the flowers add a white creamy sensation.
Perfect for a book under the blanket when the weather turns grey and rainy.

beavisbonce

@kimchelsea it’s ok my comment has been removed as it obviously didn’t fit the narrative. Love me a bit of free speech on here.

sasa.ss

This scent reminds me of ripe wild blackberries. Very nice for warm days, very soft and unisex.

MaggieCindy

Simple and recognizable smell. It doesn't make me think of summer like a lot of people. To me it's more of an autumn fragrance, very balsamic. Pleasant but simple. For those who are familiar with Dessange hair products, it smells exactely like their yellow Nutri-Etrême range.

BerryRose

The Michael Edwards Fragrances of the World Reference classifies Jil Sander's Sun EDT as a floral amber (variation, crisp white flower), and I'm not here to argue that's wrong, but this fragrance is so rich, powdery, and spicy there's a case to be made that it can be pushed into the soft amber family. Why? To me Sun smells like a summer version of one of my all time favourite fragrances: Cacharel's rich, spicy, Loulou. As much as I love rich fragrances I would never attempt to wear Loulou outside of winter.

I wear and love many fresh floral and citrus fragrances in the summer of course but my absolute favourite fragrances tend to belong to more robust fragrance families, the various ambers and woods. I'm a very seasonal person so I love discovering fragrances that very clearly read 'summer' but have more heft to the them. Sun now counts among Heeley's Coccobello (soft amber) and Juliette Has A Gun's Sunny Side Up (woods) that I wear when I want a warm, sexy, luxurious, sophisticated take on a summer fragrance.

Skinscents4Fusspots

All of the Jil Sander Sun perfumes I've had thus far just smell like Jasmine perfumes to me. To be fair, this one also smells just like Cacharel LouLou (with the sweetness and beastly strength to match!) which I was not expecting at all.

Super Strong and made me feel uneasy just smelling it on card! Bit of a shame that in the UK you can't test this before buying because it's absolutely not a safe blind buy at all. Fingers crossed someone will want to buy all the Sun Perfumes I've tried because they genuinely all just smell like variations on Jasmine and ensure instant headaches!. To be fair, the "people also like" on here does list LouLou, Alien and Hypnotic Poison.... so I probably should have clicked because those are all unwearable for me!

This is cheaper than LouLou though so if you like that one this might be a good budget-friendly alternative :)

KimChelsea

To @beavisbonce’s comment: what a nerve!! to say a perfume from 1989 is a cheap version of a 2012 one. The latter having been created when salty beach scents were already a thing, unlike the time Sun was released…

_jenevieve_

It’s the summer of 1989, and I’m eleven years old. I’m blonde, freckled, and have a sunscreen that I love the scent of. My glamorous Aunt sent it to me. I don’t have boobs. I don’t wear makeup, but I’m obsessed. It smells bougie. Grown.

SUN eau de toilette has transported me to that summer, and delivers the nostalgic, *sunny* feeling of whatever fancy Bain de Soleil I obsessed over. SUN’s yellow florals, soft amber, and creamy lactonic feel match the aesthetic of the bottle. The no-fuss design makes it ideal for tossing in a purse, or better, a beach bag. SUN is not strictly a summer perfume. The soft vanilla, african orange flower, and benzoin are enveloping and comforting in all seasons. This is an easy fragrance to wear. I find myself reaching for it after a bath, before bed, or I spray in the morning for a happy, creamy burst. The vibe is different from anything else I have, but it’s also *me*, that naive freckled kid. I love it.
For reference this is a review of a recent formulation by Cody, it’s both strong and long lasting. SUN deserves the place it’s taken as a favorite in my (I’m realizing now, too large) collection.

Kai_11

I wish this smelled like the summer I know, but everyone’s “summer” is different, right? On my skin, this is a powdery deodorant, new diapers, or Avon’s Skin So Soft.

Ariell28

As the name says, it evoques the sun, warmth and summer. It smells like a sun oil I used to use when I was a child (or, at least, that's my feeling) - bronzol, no longer on the market. It stays quite close to the skin, after a few hours.

KimChelsea

This is such a unique fragrance, I can't compare it to any other scent I've ever smelled... You'll smell like you spent the day on the beach. I think it seats perfect on both women and men.

It also takes me immediately back to my childhood in the 90's and I love it even more for that!

Charli3

My baby.
This was the first real perfume I ever wore. A present from my grandmother. European sunscreen, slightest vanilla and very unisex in my opinion (but I am a product of my generation- where everything that isn’t super sweet is not feminine lol).
It’s still my baby.

dan_d

I have a bottle from April 2021 and it is weak. The scent is great and really perfect for summer. Comparable to Tom Ford Soleil Blanc. I wear it as a man as it smells masculine to me. But the performance is so bad, I'm really sad.
Scent: 10/10
Longevity: 5/10
Sillage: 3/10

JinGA

This smells just like a baby diaper to me. Not a dirty diaper: A clean, fresh, high-end, disposable diaper. It is basically baby oil. Nice, but I don’t really want to smell like a pampers.

cocomademoisellerie

This was so popular in Germany in the 90s and early millenial. It has always been strong in sillage and longvety, so you would smell that in buses, public pools, on teachers, everywhere. For me, being an early teen to this time, this was too much, even a bit on the vulgar side, but sure at least 'over the top'. People used to bath in it, maybe because of the light name and packaging, but oh oh no no, the amber/fruity/benzoin/ylangylang-mix gets nauseating if overaplied.
So, 20 years fast forward, I happen to receive this scent again as a tiny sample in a swap. I am hesitant to try it, but I do and wow, I like it! Guess I had to pass the 30. If applied moderately, it turns into a potent, fully blooming tropical flower scent, with a strong vanillic ambery base. If you manage to tame it down to a skin scent, this a lovely and satisfying companion.

I’m happy I’m not the only one who smell bubble gum in that ! I hesitated a long time before buying this one and finally I really like it. It’s not for everyone and definitely not a people pleaser. It’s maybe a little bit heavy in the heat and for me it’s doesn’t really smell like sunscreen but more of a mix of sunny fragrances you can smell
In a crowd on a sunny day. It got a vintage vibes but do not blind buy.

annn1

Sweet, fruity bubble-gum is all I'm getting from Jil Sander Sun. I remember Sun from the 90ies, trying it out in perfume stores as a teenager, feeling that I was too young to wear it. Now, close to 30 years later, its almost headache inducing juicy-fruit quality gives me a true teenage summer party vibe that I can't really relate to (any more). Not a bad fragrance by any means with good sillage and longevity, but It seems like I missed my window of opportunity with this one and have to take a pass.

vintages

It is still an amazing scent. overall it is a sweet heliotrope scent, there are bubble gum vibes, and suncreen-vibes. the big difference is the performance, which is still ok - it is not a weak scent by any means. But it used to be beast-mode. It was in 2001 when I noticed it the last time on a woman who made an entire hotel lobby smell like her.

The dry-down is reminiscent of Gaultier 2 which has been discontinued. Sun is sweeter, more feminine, (yellow)floral, and less musky, not as pure, not as one-dimensional. I like SUN better on females.

It is not a linear scent, it smells different in the opening. which is a mediocre opening. I think I get a galbanum note. nevermind, the dry-down is phenomenal. Men love that scent on women. I do. Anyone who has the patience to wait like 60 minutes, will notice more and more that similarity to Gaultier 2 from Francis Kurkdjan. I own both and can compare them side by side. By the way, Gaultier 2 was released after SUN. So if there has been an "inspired by", then it was Kurkdjan who was inspired by Pierre Bourdon's SUN, not the other way around.

It's not that potent anymore, but honestly - who needs that? it is still a great women's fragrance. Iconic. underrated nowadays.

Ferra_Verto

One of my absolute favorites, smells like oriental suncream!
Bright and tropical ylang with a gorgeous vanilla/benzoin/amber tonka base. Fruity nuances here and there, very sweet, warm, and simply divine. What I love is that is has the potential to get cloying based on the given notes, but it never does.
Long-lasting with great sillage, this can be worn all year round, but the warmth of summer makes this extra special.
Another excellent offering by Jil Sander.

Katy94

It’s one of my favorite perfume
It has the 90s vibe to it
Also it’s not the typical sun tan lotiony smell like in many other perfumes
Here at the beginning it’s a little harsh and synthetic but if u get that thru u get beautiful creamy perfume

Pearl Sound

Summer, summer, summer. This really DOES smell like pure summer.

perfeptions

Sun (Eau de Toilette) by Jil Sander is a late eighties perfume: it has lots of notes and a unique smell. It reminds the vibe of other perfumes of that period but its (suntan) lotion smell makes it timeless. If you are interested into hearing more details about this perfume, please watch my Youtube video review on my channel perfeptions on perfume perceptions.

meliecat

As mentioned before me, I came by it heading off to a Lanzarote holiday.. It was cheap and smelled a bit like some kind if body lotion or suntan lotion. I really liked the bottle and somehow the scent brings back those days, even now.. Then I changed my mind about it and gave it away to a friend. Now after years and years I bought a tiny bottle again and I think my skin has changed ever since - it smells so much better on me now!

I think it's a scent that has very particular notes, but yet you could wear it in the summer heat too. Vanilla, amber, ylang.. It's even sexy, actually I find it a lot sexier than other flashy scents that try too hard..

Poudery

Jil Sander Sun brings back precious memories of Costa Brava and Côte d'Azur holidays, me spraying this on in the morning to walk to the bakery and buy fresh Croissants and Baguette. I was a young teen and felt super grown-up doing that, especially when the handsome guy working in the bakery commented on how much he liked my perfume, as I passed him by.

A rich, summery scent that can be worn in the sun without staining your skin, hence the name. Works on top of European sun lotion, yep. Tightly connected to summer, beach, carefree fun for me. I'm glad I have this association - wearing it today brings back some of those feels! Even without that, though, this is a good blind buy, if you like the notes. Sun is well rounded, easy to wear and pleasant and the price is great.

annasarahr121

I get the sense that Jil Sander Sun is more popular in Europe than the US; I'd never heard of it before I ran across it in Sarah McCartney's incredibly wide-ranging and informative guide, The Perfume Companion. She describes it as resembling a European sun-tanning cream, which smells of orange blossom instead of the coconut that Brits and Americans expect. In fact, it is kind of reminiscent of the orange, jelly-like Bain de Soleil ("For the St. Tropez tan...") suntanning jelly I used back in the early 1980's as a young teen. To my nose, JS Sun opens with a kind of weird combination of smells, the sweet African orange blossom clashing with a creaminess (the benzoin? the ylang ylang?), almost like in the old drink, an Orange Julius -- a combination of milk and sweet oranges -- or like an Orange Creamsicle. But, in addition to this sweet orange + cream aspect, there's also an underlying medicinal note that reminded my daughter and I of children's medicine (another reviewer mentioned Band Aids. Maybe that's the resins, styrax or benzoin...?). It's quite rich and a bit cloying; an African orange blossom/vanilla amber, sweet but inedible, with a subtle medicinal note underneath. I actually really like it, though I can see how not everyone might.

When I first sprayed on JS Sun, it reminded me a lot of both Revlon Fire & Ice and, to a slightly lesser extent, of the original Roberto Cavalli (there's a more liquidy feel to R.Cavalli, while Sun and Fire & Ice feel drier). But all three of these perfumes are quite heady, with tons of orange blossom along with their resins and vanilla -- heady, rich combinations that I personally have not encountered often in my perfume journeys here in the US. I'm trying out JS Sun in our Southern California "cold" season, and it's a nice, warm smell, but I could see how it could potentially work year round. It's also a bargain and can be obtained for less than $20 on fragrance discount websites. I think JS Sun --as well as Revlon Fire & Ice -- another cheapie -- and Roberto Cavalli -- will appeal to folks who love heady orange blossoms and ambers.

lemon_lyric

This perfume reminds me of waking up way too early during summer days and walking through a still stagnant city. It was a delicate sensory stimulus that would break the quietness along with crows cawing above the old church I used to pass by on my way.
It is creamy, calm, radiates light, and has a very soft sweetness about it that adds to its charm and brightness. Wearing this fragrance is like feeling a very personal, small sort of happiness, that is very complex, but also very simple at the same time.

TihanaB

This fragrance throws me back in the 90s.
I can hear La Bouche's Be My Lover song and I became a typical Mediterranean kid who enjoyed seaside during summer school break. Well kept women who were applying generously nice fragranced sunscreen creams, oils and tanning marmelades smelled like this.

This is a tipical old-school vanilla, tonka and benzoin combination spiced up with sweetness from ylang ylang, fruity vibe and carnation. It does smell a little bit artiticial, just like those sunscreen creams but that's the charm of it.

Projection and sillage are decent, on my skin it lasts throughout the day and I can feel it on my wrist in the morning.

I know that people love to wear Sun during winter months but this one brings so strong summer memories that I can't wear it then.
Give it a try, you won't regret this affordable gem.

Saweety Sweet

Heavy Tonka Bean and something else. None of the notes listed in their ingredients matter as this smells artificial. Sun cannot be worn in summer or you will offfend peoples nostrils. It was an obsession of mine in sixth form. Two bottles later I started developing raging migraines at just one whiff of it. It's semi-pretty and super strong yet in my opinion it is now a disaster.

angienotesjunkie

I'm really enjoying this! On me it smells like toned down Lou Lou and classic Nivea Creme in the blue tub. Smokey, amber, powdery goodness. Great lasting power and projection. Got this as a blind buy gift set for under £20, so an absolute bargain. Last time I wore it it was much cooler, now a warm summer evening. I think this works well in any season. Not quite a love but a very strong like.

zind

Sun smells clean to me. Like a girl who just got ready in her bathroom back in the 90s, but it smells like lotion and shower cream (yeah, maybe that was Sun Lotion?).

I really, really like this. It's very feminine and...old style squiky clean. Then it turns balsamic and powdery as well. Such a treat. And the best thing? Performance is great! It clings to clothes like crazy. Even after all the different scents I wear in abundance my Jacket still smells of Sun that I wore 2 days before.

I have nothing else remotely like this. Very happy to have it in my collection! I have had 2 other scents from Jil Sander, Sensations & Simply Poudrée, but this is by far my favorite.

theuntrainednose

I have a sample.

---

Lovely! A powdery complex scent with hits of old-style sunscreen (probably the ylang-ylang), which doesn't smell exactly the same every time I smell it. Sometimes I get more vanilla, other times more resins, others more florals, sometimes a creamy round, almost gourmand note that vaguely reminds me of marzipan, but not quite, and sometimes an interesting "fresh powder note" with an airy and vaguely sour quality which I enjoy. To my nose, it varies and I like this variety, while always keeping its powdery cloud of serene beauty. It also smells "happy", for lack of a better term. There's something my mind interprets here as a breeze on a warm-ish day, I am not exactly sure what.

I do love powdery scents. If you don't it's probably not for you.

I may want it, need to re-test some more days :)

Floco

I had great hopes for Sun, and when I tried it, I really liked it, and still do, and I'll spray it with abandon this summer. But then I decided to test it against Molinard Habanita L'esprit. And L'esprit, which has a similar vibe, is Just So Much Better.

Vesi_

To me this smells clean and white (like a face cream, or a lot like a standard Nivea lotion), and at the same time like fruity hard candies, yellow/orange flowers and warmth, pretty long lasting for an edt. Like it!

Scandipersian

Do not blind buy like I did! I did have faint memories of this from airport tax frees during childhood, but not even then it seemed sunny!
It is a very particular fragrance where the amber and benzoin get exaggerated on my skin providing nothing else than cat piss smell 🐈 And unlike the youtuber who made me buy this, that piss smell on me wasn’t temporary! (What expertise do those girls sitting and promoting stuff in front of their home cameras have anyway 🙄)
Sorry for a negative review, this really is my first bad review here. Those who enjoy this should not get offended and just continue enjoying!
Edit: even after scrubbing with soap, I am left with a smokey smell 🧽 💨 😖
Can send it to you for free if you are in Denmark or Sweden.

To me, this is men´s cologne mixed with sun lotion. It´s a rather strange combination, but certainly a unique one. Is it dated? I don´t know, but I don´t find it modern for sure. You can tell it wasn´t composed lately. Buy a small bottle as you won´t need a big one. Longevity is good.

Skinterpreter

In my opinion, this scent does really express the character of summer and hot, sunny weather well. It reminds me of the scent a sun protection milk has. It's fruity and sweet, but not in a way a random celebrity fragrance would smell, for example (and by that I don't want to imply all celebrity perfumes smell like that or that it's bad to smell like that, it's just what occurred to me at first as an example of a typical, fresh, fruity-sweet smell). It's more like a sun milk and bubblegum, a little bit of citrus, something like that. I haven't encountered a scent like that before. Interesting. The longevity and sillage are moderate.

Elmyra

This is an amazing fragrance! I do enjoy it. When i first sprayed it, i knew i had to have it. It is bold and loud and shouting and wants you to have it and to love it. If you can love it.. But the dry-down, is incredible.
It opens with various herby flowers, but afterward these herbs, which are not in fact, develop into something so much more... creamier... a creamy, delicious texture.
It is strong at first, we think it reminds us of sun lotion. Nothing of the kind.
A bit it does remind us of sun blooming flowers, like the Tiare flower, but it is far from the coconut and argan smelling lotions that you put on the beach for the sun. (these guys have brainwashed us with these tropical scents!!!!!)
This is a frag that can stand on its own. No comparatives.
It is very unique, very strange in fact. I am a fan of my fruity scents such as Lolita Lempicka and my Armani Code and Emporio Armani, etc. Boss Femme and for freshness i enjoy DKNY Energizing.
This one has surprised me in a wonderful way. It is a happy scent, one that you can take to a picnic, and yes, to the beach without smelling like SUN
I have to spray it a tad too often though, but that is because i enjoy those top notes.
If you don't want to spray a tad too often, then the the creamy dry down is something you will enjoy for a while.
It lasts, however not like a strong perfume.
I hope you give this one a shot! In my country in Europe it is not expensive, in fact Mariah and Rihanna fragrances cost more than this one

DecoElegance

As I continue to work from home, I continue to take "risks" with my fragrance purchases. When there's no one around to offend, you can really test some of the more polarizing, yet curious, fragrances on your list. Jil Sander San was on my list for the better part of year, and I finally purchased a bottle. I'm pleasantly surprised! It's not bad!

On initial blast, I do smell something... chemical. It's just an odd synthetic smell that, on me, dissipates within a few minutes. What's left is a skin scent (I get no projection from this) that smells musky, ambery, and a little smoky. It's sweet without being cloying, and while I wouldn't call it "fresh," it certainly smells clean.

To echo other reviewers, this doesn't smell beachy in a conventional American way, but it does make me recall going down the Jersey shore as a young woman in my early 20s. I was a heavy smoker then, and this perfume does remind me of what I used to smell like back then- Bain de Soleil sun cream and Parliaments. I like this, but I also recognize that it's not for everyone.

sarahmarah

This scent is the cloying relic of a time when more was more. Kind of like shoulder pads. Despite the name this fragrance does not evoke feelings of the beach, summer, or even the sun itself. It’s heavy with intense powdery sweetness that makes you it’s captive until you cave and wash it off or go nose blind.

Mc1995

This is pretty. It’s not groundbreaking but I can definitely consider it a timeless classic of its kind. It’s not meant to be a room filler, more like a second skin, to wear outdoors I’d say. In the sun. To the beach, hiking, swimming etc. but still you could wear it anywhere. It gives off nostalgia that reminds me of simpler times. I’d say it’s a bit overpriced for what it is. But if you can find a mini, try it.

LionsTigersBearsOhMy

Edit - Summer 2022: It's been a scorching hot and dry summer here in the Pacific northwest. I have been wearing this almost daily. It definitely needs hot weather to truly shine. One of the best cheapies I've ever used.

This is straight-up baby oil and bubble gum on my skin - truly not what I was expecting based on the name. I'm a bit shocked actually. I'm reminded of Bazooka, the pink bubble gum from my childhood. I don't know why this would be considered a sunny or beachy scent, but I definitely get the 80s vibe. Really hoping it grows on me...

ingeneuxo

-Opens smelling clean, like a scent you can find in cosmetics/skincare products.
-I don't really get sunscreen vibes from this.
-Amber and vanilla notes become more prominent as it evolves into the middle- base notes.

*Update*
-Opens like bug spray on second wearing. Not fbw. (-)

puremugetto

This is a silent masterpiece.
Deserves attention, nothing out dated. It is a close to skin fragrance.
Blends in very wisely, differs for every wearer like a fingerprint.
Although the name is "Sun", i find it to be a sophisticated winter scent.
Cream, almond, exotic fruits and flowers, sandalwood, a hint of vanilla, sufficient portion of musk and such clear and clean winter scent. Everything is well balanced, rounded, nothing sharp and harsh to the nose.
I always keep a bottle in my closet.

Dufteren

The mother of european beach scent, a distant relative of Cacharels Lou Lou. This is Europe in the 80’s, lazy days by the Mediterranean sea, it smells like Whams club Tropicana. Yes that is what it smells like.

Koningin

I smell a lot of vanilla mixed with coconut. Definitely a sunscreen vibe in hot weather.
In cold weather it smells like incense and spicy, which to me is atrocious. So I would avoid this in cooler weather. Also, do not ever overspray this.

Beautyeditor88

Sunscreen + powder. It doesn’t smell dated. The composition is very clean. The ultimate fun in the sun fragrance. A beautiful German girl in white t-shirt and vintage levis.

Ace-of-swords

This fragrance is a centerfold. A high cut tan line, Yasmine Bleeth of a fragrance. Despite being over 30-years-old, the bottle is so au courant. There is nothing new under the Sun.

iurhaiush

First time I sniffed this fragrance some years ago, I wasn't sure what to make of it. There was something both odd and incredibly attractive to it. I didn't buy it then, but I've kept thinking about it ever since then. Well, last week I finally caved and decided that if it kept being stuck in my head like that, it meant that I had to finally get it. I looked for it online, found a very cheap deal on a 75ml bottle + a 100 ml body/hair shampoo - so I snatched it. It arrived today, and I immediately sprayed it on. Oh my gosh, why did I wait this long to get this gorgeous stuff? I haven't read the suggested notes on here, so I'm going to describe what it smells like on me and to my nose without any bias. This starts very spicy on my skin, I can detect something like cinnamon, vanilla, and a bit of musk. There are also some flowers, I think, though I'm not sure what exactly. There's furthermore something plasticky in there, which isn't bad at all to my nose. It's all one very very well blended whole, and it's difficult to tell separate notes. Sun is of course reminiscent of suntan lotion, but it's more than that, there are so many facets to it. It's a bit the smell of sun-kissed skin -- suntan lotion, musk, and all. This is an edt, and it lasts all day on me, no complaints in the longevity department! Sillage starts strong, and in one-two hours, it becomes more close to the skin, but still quite noticeable. Excellent value for money! I am so happy I finally got this one. P.S. Love the bottle too! So minimalistic, well-made, and nice to hold!

lemonblue

Smells kind of like medical gauze, kind of like potpourri, kind of like lotion, kind of like a closet with clothes, and a smidge like a pool. But honestly, it smells pretty good all together. Sniffing the bottle, I thought I wouldn't like this out of the three Sun flankers I bought since it smelled kind of like cough syrup or medicine, but this is very comfortable when worn. I can see myself using this a lot. I'm not a huge fan of amber, but it's very light here and delicate. This is a really soft almost milky clean sweet synthetic scent. Somewhat medicinal, and slightly herbal. A little bit of spice too. I think it's perfect after a bath or shower. That's how I wore it for the first time today, and I have to say, I am loving it. So soft and pretty. Bergamot is there in the initial spray, but not for long. The dry down is lovely. Doesn't smell like "perfume" and also doesn't smell like soap. Really pleasant. Especially more so since I bought it for less than 30$.

karrygardner1958

Sunny, warm ,soft ,inoffensive lovely musk and slow drydown ,I’ve rediscovered Sun after many ,many years and am enjoying wearing it .
It’s a little old fashioned but then, so am I and so is my taste in fragrances . Cheap as chips for a large bottle that I can use without conscience that I’m spritzing hundreds of £‘s worth of fragrance during lockdown when only my family get to smell me . Gradually , Sun is creeping into the DNA of my wardrobe and my clothes, mixing gloriously with Chanel 5 and Rive Gauche , two other fragrances I always have in my arsenal and fully intend to never be without , just in case fragrances . Sun makes me happy just spraying it cheers me up.
No clever words to describe the individual components of this sweet , sunny smell of a summers day ( and no, it isn’t giving me a sun tan lotion vibe at all here ) , it’s great for a dreary ,January day , sitting doing the annual accounts . I love sniffing myself .

cresol

Summery, but not in a typical way is exactly right. The top notes are pure sunscreen and rapidly dissipate. There is a long musk note through it which reads more like incense in this case. Fairly sweet, maybe benzoin in the dry down, I think this is the plastic note people describe. A very fascinating abstract sunscreen smell which is an ambery, balsamic floral at heart.

partypooper

Warm, creamy, and very long-lasting. On my skin benzoin and tonka takes center stage; in the background musk, and a dash of vanilla.

You can almost feel the heat radiating out, but it is not a dry heat like in Chergui. I prefer to wear this in cooler weather actually.

What lingers right at the end reminds me of one of those back-in-the-era chewing gum; like a Wrigley's Juicy fruit - after you've worked it a bit.

That old gum you like is going to come back in style!

elisabethpigeoncaron

This is a wonderful, soft, creamy, balsamic scent. I blind bought it because I always love balsamic fragrances, and it exceeded my expectations. The performance is amazing, it lasts all day. There’s definitely a “vintage” feel to it, but in a very good way. I absolutely love this one, I bring it out every summer, it’s perfect. For very hot and humid weather.

AnitaHendricks

This perfume never had my attention in the stores because I didn't care for the bottle. This changed when I smelled it! It opens up with fresh citrus notes. There's a soft, creamy, balsamic scent left when it dries down. I love to wear it during the summer or the early autumn days! It's absolutely wonderful!

Mizmalibu

Not the first thing that comes in mind when you think about a summer scent. Growing up in the 80s-90s in Europe, for me however, this is very familiar en reminds me of the first beach vacations in Spain, four girls, no parents. So, happy memories :)
I rediscovered this recently and wore it to the beach last week. A first impression of this perfume (and by looking at the notes) would be that it is a bit old fashioned, very warm, spicy, maybe more of an autumn/winter perfume. But on my sand-covered skin in the sun it is perfect. It radiates as a natural warm, calming, classy skin scent. Made for summer, it doesn't stain. And it lasts all day.

labonvie

To most Americans this is not going to smell like sunscreen. Coppertone, this is not. But there are other scents that achieve that effect. To my nose, this is creamy, woody, spicy and fruity with smoky nuances. My first impression was a lighter version of LouLou sans incense. It’s much more complex than your typical sunny summer scent. Not exactly what I was expecting but I really like it.

Update: The more I wear this, the more I love this. It is so smooth and easy to wear. A spicy amber is hard to pull off in summer but this is perfect. It wears beautifully, projects enough that people will notice. It’s also not a common scent, at least here in the US. It is more elegant than its bottle suggests. Very successful blind buy!

strawberryswitchblade

One of the few fragrances I had to wash off immediately. I can‘t detect even one of the notes mentioned. On me this is just a perfumey mumbo jumbo with an ozonic undertone and an unpleasant acrid chemical stench.

Austrian_in_Denmark

I have so many memories connected to Sun - like everyone who was a teenager in the 90's in Germany or Austria, I guess.
A friend of mine was addicted to this and sprayed it incessantly. She was very popular with the boys, so I remember Sun as a kind of moth trap for male teenagers.

1990's Sun was super-strong, and one of my favourite smells (which was lucky, because there was no hiding from it, ha ha!). It was friendly and happy, but also deep and complex. I remember the heliotrope, the vanilla/tonka bean and the benzoins. There was a freshness about it - maybe from the citrus?
The opening was very sharp and alcoholic, but at the same time delicious. I found Sun intoxicating from start to finish.

Last year I ordered a bottle of the new version. Sun still is a nice perfume, but a pale shadow (see what I did there? ;-)) of its former self. It has lost a lot of complexity and allure. I must try and find a vintage bottle in Germany, once the Corona restrictions have become history.

Sillage and longevity: both strong with vintage Sun, and average with the new version.

Matheya

I agree with Mapache 2 comments below. What a mess...There's nothing Sunny about this.
It starts warm with a strange almost medicine smell.
Later the Carnation is the main flower note with something sharp - I can't tell from the notes. ! The green notes are almost minty - so it smells like the lotions for joints !
Negative reviews are not welcomed but it is what it is .
No wonder it's so cheap. This has to be re-done and edited.
PS : I tried this 4 times on me and regreted every single time - the drydown is terrible. It lasts long though...

Nataliemarie

@Latafan, well said! I agree, times change & "Suntan Lotion" doesn't even smell like Suntan Lotion anymore. I do love this. I want a HUGE bottle, I have a small one, & am going to look online to see if I can even get a bigger one. As I sit here, on lock down as well, on my back porch smelling like this. It makes this day a little more bearable. :)

latafan

Another of my 'to use up during lock down' samples.

Is it the first time I smelled this? No, of course not. I was born in 1983. My first long summers at the public pool without parental supervision took place in the 90s.

To me this is a 1990s summer encapsulated in a fragrance. It does smell like sun tan lotion of those days. Only the strong Benzoin accord - the note that makes me think of my childhood instantly cause it was omnipresent in fragrances back then and all 'grown ladies' smelled of it - makes it take that jump from lotion to perfume.

I do get why there is quite some confusion in the comments about it smelling of sun tan lotion or not, some expecting sun tan lotion to be more tropical (coconut-y) or even fruity smelling.

You have to keep in mind, the way skin care products are scented is extremely tied to tastes of the time and also region. When I came from Germany to the US for the first time in the early 2000s I was blown away at how different, more fruity, more playful and more intense, skin care products smelled there, while perfumes seemed to be less 'perfume-y' and more about freshness (it was the age of CK still).

Similarly many people have an idea what a 'classic' lipstick scent is. To younger girls that smell in a lipstick might remind them of their moms or even grandmothers. They are used to lipsticks smelling more of vanilla or fruity even. But guess what, once they'll have their own daughters or granddaughters vanilla will be the 'classical lipstick scent' and some other scent will be perceived as more modern.

If you experienced summers in the 90s this is clearly a summery scent and it does smell like sun tan lotion. However, to people who didn't live through that time or who were smaller children the impression might be more that of a warm 'mature scent' because it goes heavy on the Benzoin and because you may have smelled it before on your aunts, mothers, possibly grandmothers even etc.

Longevity is excellent on me. In the heat sillage is pretty good too.

Bottom line being, if you don't know and love it already, this is not a good blind buy cause it's rather 90s retro. Do test it and see if you vibe with it first.

mapache

Omg...where to start with this one...???

First spritz...I like. Citrus/floral benzoiny.

The mid...powdery floralish enters a little bit....but the drydown is where the problems begin for me.
Cloying...heliotrope/tonka...takes over...I am now done!

IMO, this has nothing to do with "SUN"....the name and bottle/packaging to not correspond to the scent...???
This should have been a "pink" juice in a frilly bottle
I am usually not overly tough in my reviews, but this one causes me headache...and...almost...nausea. Sorry.

AlanneSedai

I'm on the fence with this one. Bought it blind when it was on sale and I don't regret the purchase because of it's price, but I'm just not sure if I'll be wearing it a lot.

When I smell the nozzle and just spray it on it seems light and happy, fresh yet warm. But, after a little time it often seems to become heavier as it dries and it feels too much to the point where I consider washing it off. The base notes really shine through, and they are not what I was after. I had the same problem with Jil Sander's Eve which I got rid of recently. I used to like that one for its freshness, too, but after a while it just becomes too overwhelming.

freddinos

Warm, balmy, smooth, a bit body smell-y but in an intimate, not repulsive or unclean way. Thankfully I wasn’t exposed to it in my early years (like a reviewer here mentions as it was very popular in Germany back in the day) so I love it without associations.
Not sunscreen-like at all to me, and I grew up in the 90s in Europe going to beach vacations every summer with the smell of Nivea and Ambre Solaire around me. Most prominent notes to me are benzoin and ylang. Love it

Nataliemarie

This reminds me of sitting at the Beach (mayyybe), it almost missed that scene...And putting Baby Powder on your just washed soapy smelling skin. You are applying powder instead of sunscreen. I get *0* sunscreen/lotion from this one. It's safe, but not groundbreaking. Very light & stays close to to your skin or whatever you put it on. If you want the Beach & Suntan lotion go for Sun di Gioia, Beach Walk, or Fire Island.

hexed

Doesn't in its entirety remind me of any sunscreen or tanning oil I've had, but it might be because I was born in -94.
However, there are parts that do feel distinctively summery and warm to me.
Not in a beachy way, more like going to a church or a temple on a vacation in a foreign country.
The bottle is nice and heavy, compact.
The churchyness lessens after about 2 hours and it becomes a beautiful, soft floral with something a little bitter and sharp hanging in the background.
I'll probably prefer wearing this in fall and winter, it may get too overwhelming in summertime, and who doesn't yearn for some warm spiciness in the colder months!
Ideal longevity for an edT (but actually lasts longer and projects stronger than a few of the edPs I own).

Love this. It’s a favorite and I carry it with me as there’s really no sharp edge to it, but it’s also not childishly sweet. I can spray it on anytime and not be conspicuous about having just applied perfume. The only thing I notice is that initial burst of medicinal notes which does off in a minute or two on my skin. After that it’s all warm cream and perfect for most day to day wear when I want to feel relaxed and calmed.
I think I may subconsciously remember someone who put me at ease in my childhood wearing this, explaining that association, or maybe it’s just the scent itself. I’m not sure but I love.

kerriashleyc

just beautiful especially in summer, constantly sniffing myself when I wear this and an instant favorite. This is from someone who's signature has been chanel chance eau fraiche for the past 5 years. Not similar at all but a beautiful creamy scent

foxy_princess

Tropical custard with a HEAVY hit of spices

This is a lot different than what I expected. As another commenter below said: it's a love-hate scent. It's summery, but not in the typical way. I don't even think it smells all that much like sunscreen...it's an odd, creamy white floral with almost medical undertones. There's something slightly nauseating about this. Is that what benzoin smells like? It smells like it would have been a sunscreen fragrance at some point, but then it went off. I like it more than not, but it definitely is an odd one.

Harrisonpaulie1245

I have a love/hate relationship with Sun. I found out about her in a review. This girl in her 20s wears her and she said how amazing she is. So I decided to buy myself a bottle. Well I’m not usually one for tropical scents. I love coconut but hate it in perfume. I’m more of an oriental floral person. So when I read the word balsamic I was intrigued. And this is what I got from the scent. Sun tan lotion but in a good way. Not tropical like most. This is something you could wear in winter and summer. Because it’s got that oriental flair but it’s light enough to wear in summer. I don’t always wear her because I’m not crazy about the scent as most people are in love with it. All in all I would recommend this to someone who lives summer scents because I think you’d love it.

Balmy summer night in a bottle! Creamy, warm, sweet, powdery, beachy orange blossom, Jil Sander sun is currently my favorite cheapie. An EDT with medium sillage and great lasting power, this is warm skin on a balmy summer night along the beach.

SailorV

Jil Sander Sun does smell like sunscreen, it‘s basically the mother of all beachy scents. BUT this is old school European sunscreen that‘s perfumed with orange blossom, so no coconut and nothing specifically tropical. I think how you perceive Sun might really depend on your location or where you grew up. To me this smells like a distant memory of a summer day in my childhood, so, in the 90s in Germany. We don‘t have too many really hot days here most years, but we do have them, and Sun smells like sitting on a beach on a very hot day, wearing sunscreen and eating a Curamaja Split (passion fruit flavored creamsicle) after spending many hours in the sun. It has that smell of sand and sunkissed skin to it, a warm salty ambery fizz. It‘s not a photorealistic caption of the scene I described, but it conjures that image to me, like a blurry picture. Objectively I‘d say Sun is a warm oriental benzoin and vanilla scent with orange blossom, heliotrope and some short-lived fruity notes. It smells good on warm or cold skin and could be worn year round.

Here in Germany it‘s the olfactory equivalent of the Macarena, really overplayed in the 90s and I‘m not sure I want to smell like it. But if you‘re from a place where Jil Sander was never really popular and the description sounds good to you, I urge you to try it, this is a lovely scent, especially for the cheap price it‘s going for nowadays.

For a long time (years ans years) I searched for a summer fragrance with long staying power that made me feel sunny. I never thought of Sun, as I thought it was old fashioned and worn by too many. Never had any problems in finding winter fragrances. Yet, summer was a whole different story. Which fragrance would stay long and would smell like summer without it being aquatic like Davidoff’s cool water?

Now, 2019, I suddenly remembered the ads in fashion magazines when I was eleven years old which made me long for summer, sunny weather, glowing skin, shorts, summer dresses, hot summer nights and dinners with my girlfriends. Shall I try this oldie? I tried.

What a fragrance! I bought the set including shower gel and bodylotion and want to make this my summer signature scent!!! This is so sophisticated, warm, soft and I want to sniff my wrists all day!

The bottle even makes you feel sunny! I only wish the sillage was a bit heavier but I guess I’ll make up for that with my winter fragrances.

As I don’t want my sun tan lotion to overpower the fragrance, I choose one that is hardly noticible. My conclusion? Jil Sander should lance a sun tan lotion from this fragrance.

Fragrance - Sun Jil Sander
Bottle(roll-on) from - 2017

This is a story about a resinous benzoin enchanted with some kind of floral magic laying on top of a bit cozy blend of ambery vanilla and tonka.
I think it's a unisex smell.I'm not sure about the name.Perhaps "Longing for the sun",but be that as it may,I kinda like this one.

Longevity - 8/10(8+ hours)
Silage/Projection - 8/10(moderate to high projection for the first 1-2 hours, than sits closer to skin for the duration of the scent's evolution)
Weather - best in spring, autumn and winter.
Age - 27+
Compliments- medium
Scent - 8/10

Main notes according to me -
benzoin,ambery vanilla,tonka,ylang-ylang,orris,sandalwood.

The drydown is woody, creamy, moderatly sweet and musky and I get some -sandalwood,ambery vanilla, benzoin, tonka and musk.

Emotions - Longing for the sun, puzzling, unexpected.

Occasion -Perfect for nights out.

This is a classic scent,but I don't think it's outdated.Try before you buy.

VVB3

Oh Hell no!~ Sorry but on me, this is all chemicals and plastic doll head! SO bad on me. No way. No sun whatsoever.

sia.akerlund

Got it recommended to me by my best friend. Today is the first day that I’ve tried it and I really like it. It’s a very different scent compared to what I usually wear, but it’s interesting and unusual. Think It will be a summer fave.

lydia fors

This is surprisingly addictive. It was a blind buy. The reviews here are so polarized, from the best scent ever to the greatest perfumery disaster. I needed to check, what it's all about. And now I know. The first, initial phase is quite old school, but after 15 minutes or so, I can detect the sun lotion! But it's not the modern coconut some people expected and thus felt cheated by Sun. It's that sun lotion from the 90. It instantly brings the childhood memories of summer vacations. It's quite nostalgic for me and I am very fond of the feelings this perfume evoked.

There's so many notes here, I cannot break it down. It is sweet, but not sugary sweet. Warm, cosy and absolutely alluring. I can imagine wearing it in a summer, but it's an evening scent. My skin is sunkissed, it's not cold, but the midday heat is gone. At first, it's pretty strong, but it settles down and stays close to the skin. And I love it, because I don't feel the need to share Sun with the others. I'd rather keep it for myself. I'm glad I bought it.

ChocolatesAndHoney

Warm, sexy and an everlasting ode to womanhood - that's how I would describe this fragrance. To me it smells extremely feminine, a bit heavy and sensual.
It's not an airy, fruity type of summer scent but more a long walk on a hot beach at sunset.
Regarding the notes I smell mostly Benzoin and Ylang-Ylang. The vanilla note is present but gives more warmth rather than sweetness.
Overall a summertime classic!

fleurdelis66

After reading reviews here (saying that this is the smell of summer, the smell of beach, sun tan lotion etc) I made a blind buy because I love tropical scents, coconuts, beach & island vibes, but unfortunately this perfume has nothing to do with the beach or summertime.

People are you crazy? or haven't you ever smelled a sun tan lotion? I mean they smell coconut and tropical. This perfume smells balsamic and nothing related with summer. And it doesn't last long. For beach vibes I don't want to smell balsamic and vanilla, I prefer more fruity, sugary and happy scents.

evapap181977

received it today.this and its fellow Sensations for me they are happiness and comfort in a bottle.sweet smell but not too sweet to disturb.absolute value for money.for me it is sun at the end of spring not summer but i m sure this scent if you like it you are able to wear it all year.projection and sillage are above average both opening and dry down didnt let me down.

If you’d like a cheaper version, please consider exclamation by Coty. Twin sisters ;)

So, I have a confession to make...

this. right. here. is phenomenal!

I won't wear it to go out (casual or formal events) or to work. I wear it for ME and only ME. It is everything I have ever searched for in a fragrance.

I must be honest, it is SO SWEET that it is obnoxious- hence why I don't wear it out and about town.

SUN by Jil Sander has every single note I have searched for all over Fragrantica for years and years!!

Vanilla, BENZOIN, heliotrope, amber, sandalwood, orris root, tonka bean, styrax, ylang-ylang- PURE HEAVEN!

So thank you to all my fellow Fragranticians who have recommended this fragrance based on the notes listed above that I was in search of.
I have used fragrantica.com for so many years, that I even lost my original username and had to start from scratch all over again.

I wish someone told me years ago, if you are looking for that sweet sweet base found in that old Revlon Ciara, without that weird top raspberry note, this may be what you are looking for.

I am still in search of THE similar sweet perfume my dear sweet Aunt used to wear when I was a child. But as my hubby has already told me, I may just have to accept that fact that I may never know what it was she wore :(

Until that day, I will continue to secretly enjoy my SUN.

schneeblume

One spritz on my wrist almost 30 hours ago from a brand new bottle and it's still there, although silage went from moderate to soft.

jazzfan

This was wildly popular some 20 years ago through Europe. Thank God, sillage is not massive so a little whifs here and there of its sunny and powdery vanilla was lovely. I bought it for the first time few years ago, it was just too cheap to pass, and became addicted myself.

The opening is the least gracious part, reminds me of the caugh syrup I hated when I was a child; sweet, sticky, chemical, nasty stuf. Then it settles...powdery, woody and one of the most addictive vanilla on the world. So sensual, it really is what is supose to be; reminder of the rays of sunshine after a day on the beach with the traces of the suntan lotion and a bit of sweat. It's geniously done.
I avoid it in the summer, I do not need it and there is costus. The chalky, pasty several days sweating unwashed body odour, waaaaay too present on high temperature.
But in the middle of the winter, when all is grey, dull and depressing, it's perfect. Lazy day in the sun, yes please!
More, please!

aenflex

To me this is ultimately a warm, very sweet oriental. I don’t get anything really beachy from it, but it IS warm and the sun is warm so perhaps it’s aptly named. I’ve been running the gamut of warm tropical beach scents lately, and this was a good buy at 20£ at duty free. I got the Made in France version, FWIW.
The opening gives me a strong whiff of Tom-cat spray, animalic and skanky. I was intrigued, I wanted to see what happened beyond that. And what I get is Teaberry gum, anyone remember that? Teaberry gum including the white chalky powder in the wrapper. Wintergreen. I get a major essence of a rootbeer float with vanilla ice cream, which lasts almost throughout wearing. It finally dries down to a gentlemanly spiced vanilla, reminiscent of Old Spice. My grandfather wore Old Spice every day when I was a kid, and it’s etched into my nose memories.
Adjectives I’d use: Heavy. Soapy. Powdery. Ambery (benzoin and vanilla). Sweet. Woody. Dense. Cloying. Mature, but not ‘old lady’ as some would say. It’s a late 80s meant to have incredible density and presence, and Sun definitely has that.

It’s too sweet and heavy. I literally can’t give it away, I’ve tried several times.

chloematilda

I wore this years ago. Canadian summers are short, but the days are long. This beauty and I spent many lovely warm summer evenings together.

Jil Sander has come back into my life, one fragrance at a time. I've yet to find a full size bottle, but have two minis to keep me happy until I do. I have a few months until winter. In the meantime, I can wear this and dream of summer. Suntan lotion, warm skin, ripe summer fruits, and a lovely powdery dusting in the drydown.

This is smooth and creamy and oh so wearable. Jil creates classics - no big surprises - just beautiful sun warmed florals with just the right amount of sweet. I don't get the citrus notes - but perhaps they help to balance the scent and keep it from being too sugary.

On me, Sun lasts around 5-6 hours and is fairly close. From a distance, it just smells like warm clean skin. But come closer...and there it is. A sexy pleasant surprise that used to earn me a lot of compliments. Happy to have this back in my wardrobe.

gtabasso

beautiful unique sweet floral with ylang, benzoin, tonka, heliotrope; almost like frangipane with coconut; orris, musk; dries down to an almost sweet incense amber

charlie.aeroplane

It's kinda masculine, it has a prominent note that reminds me of Ciara by Revlon which is my most hated perfume...I wonder which one is the guilty note... They have orris root in common but I doubt is that because it's like an animalic note that bothers me...

The perfume itself reminds me of soap, that old unscented marseille soap in combination with something animalic which is not my favorite thing, and yeah it smells kinda cheap to me.
Btw, I love suntan lotions smell but I don't think this resembles it. Maybe if the animalic note wasn't in it it would a bit...

Sevparfumaddict

I spend many years reading enthousiastic review about this one and when I finally bought it.....I discover it was my female boss perfum ! As I hated her, it take me about 4 years to appreciate this scent !

meg0825

This and Jil Sander No. 4 have been on my wish list forever. I'm so glad to finally have Sun! I'm surprised that "powdery" isn't one of the main accords listed because I find this to be quite the powder bomb in the middle to late phases of the fragrance. I definitely pick up sweet ylang ylang in the opening and heliotrope and Tonka provide a nice almondy-vanilla spiciness. The benzoin is to die for and makes this fragrance rich and velvety. I think this will be perfect for summer evenings. Fantastic!

Deutsch100

LOVE!! How have so many years (decades?) passed and this awesome fragrance has not been mine? I just recently got a bottle, and I am in love. Soft, powdery, slightly sweet, slightly suntan oil, warm skin, hint of flowers and just yummy!! Longevity is very good, sillage soft but not weak. I have so, so, so many bottles of fragrance and I can see myself reaching for this one very often now. I am almost tempted to buy another to keep in my gym bag, so I can reapply after showering. Highly recommended!!

Ohhellozippy

Hello 80s can I come back?
Exactly what you need for nostalgia of sunny days of the past.
very strong, so one sprizz goes a long way & time.

mystica

I probably wouldn't know what to think about Sun, if I hadn't read the reviews before ordering it blind. This is such an abstract fragrance, and every single good/bad definition about it just becomes right when you smell it:

Plasticy - check
Baby powder - check
Suntan lotion, Joop Homme,
Summer in a bottle, sun kissed dry salty skin, rotten fruit - check.

I am now adding another element: The very clean interiors of a not so new car, with its sunlight infused and nicely polished console & slightly worn leather seats. The smell oozing from a scented cardboard is permeating the air. This is definitely one of those scents you can't have enough of but without a logical explanation...

pjspaceshit

Is it just my nose, or the initial spray smells exactly like Jägermeister?

tommy_girl

This perfume is very popular in Germany and has been on shelves for decades now.But it doesn't match my chemistry in so many ways.
To start off, I guess I have a problem with "sunny" perfumes. Dior dune, Estee Lauder bronze goddess series and so on are all examples that my body chemistry doesn't go along with this concept in perfumes.
Back to the sun, it starts with an intense impact of warm notes. All I can say is that there are so many notes over there. I detect powdery flowers and vanilla with a masculine touch. I can easily claim that it's a classic fragrance, as it has a very 80s vibe to me. This start baffles me about the meaning of "sun" in this context. Does it mean that it's suitable to wear in a sunny day? or is it attempting to provoke a sunny day for you? considering the warm, intense presentation, I guess the later is more probable.
As the time passes,it gets even more powdery. I smell something like cherry, like cherry flavor in medicines. There is also something bitter, which might be ylang-ylang (not my favorite note). It smells quite heady and dry which I can relate to the concept of sunny day.
I guess sun was pioneer when it was launched, which justifies the reason why it stayed on shelves for years. Also Jil Sander has always made great perfumes, my favorite nowadays being "simply" series. But honestly I'd rather pass by the fragrance "sun".

Mona Lygre

This is one of my absolute favorite perfumes, I love it!

blackmartini

This was a blind buy for me. First off, I have to say that I love the bottle in all its minimalistic genius.

I was a bit worried when I initially sprayed this on paper, as it came on really strong and quite old fashioned. Then I tried it on my skin and waited. 5 or 10 minutes later, I get spicy playdoh from this, which reminded me quite a bit of Pi, which I adore.

This is very solar and warming but as many reviewers pointed out, by no means "beachy". For me it is in the same vein as Gaultier 2 or Ambre Gris by Balmain. Super sexy but quite heady, worn best in Autumn or Winter. Wear this in the Summer and you will suffocate. If you were hoping for a light summery tropical scent, you've been warned.

Eftelya

Too creamy for hot summer days but suitable for holiday dreams and nostalgia...

Annemarie

Lovely but strange. I don't much like the opening because I perceive a queasy clash between citrus notes and creamy notes. As the citrus recedes I can relax and I do find Sun a very relaxing fragrance. At the moment I'm spritzing it when I get home from work as a way of winding down.

I think the 'sun' of the title is found in this mood of warmth and relaxation. There is nothing tropical or coconut-y about Sun. It doesn't remind me of sunscreen. If you want something like Estee Lauder's Bronze Goddess, this isn't it.

It's winter for me as I'm testing Sun and I'm not convinced that it will work in hot weather. It may be too heavy on the vanilla and tonka for that. Sun may actually be a great fragrance to wear during the winter to evoke summer - much better than some kind of thin, short-lived summer cologne. That's not gonna work when it's below zero outside.

So I don't expect to be wearing Sun to combat the heat on hot days. I'll wear it on cold days to remind myself that those perfect summer days of freedom and relaxation WILL come back.

Gemini12

After all of the varied reviews, I wasn't sure WHAT to expect with Sun, but when I found it for a cheap price I knew I had to blind-buy it to try it for myself.

On first spray it's a mishmash of notes and I smell something reminiscent of Band-Aids. Fortunately that phase passes very quickly and then it becomes powdery heliotrope but with an undertone of something I can't quite define. Eventually, after 6 hours or so, it becomes a soft vanilla/tonka scent. As other have said, it somehow smells familiar, but I can't quite place it....the closest I can come is that it reminds me of some sort of lotion or soap or even a perfume that somebody wore in my childhood.

My overall impression is of a powdery perfume than anything summery or beachy, but that doesn't detract from its loveliness. I very much enjoy this perfume and am looking forward to exploring it in other seasons.

AMBRA GRI

In the opening, this is Jil Sander Simply sprayed on hair and clothes while putting sunscreen on your skin. I do feel a hint the violet- nutmeg mix from Simply. After a while, the drydown reminds me a lot of Estee Lauder Sensuous, not that they are necessarily similar, but I have the same feeling of a pretty spicy and potent body cream. And yes, the creaminess feels like putting a 90's heavily perfumed thick layer. Too bad I missed a good discount of this. Definitely interesting.

Shwets

A lovely beachy sun screen like scent which blends smoothly with my skin and is quality. Unfortunately it resembles joop for men in the dry down (sob...sob...). Gutted as the notes listed are my type.

ntabassum92

A very unique type of summer fragrance. This joined my collection after a lovely member accidentally ordered two bottles of this, and decided to generously give away the extra bottle. Thank you so much for the opportunity to wear this perfume! I brought this perfume with me to my temporary summer home, and have been wearing almost exclusively this one scent for the past three weeks.

At first it smells almost like a fruity leather to me, kind of smoky and sweet and the same feeling that Shalimar gives me (but fruitier.) It has a skanky aspect, especially midday when I touch my neck and smell my fingers I smell something very ripe and animalic. It's not off-putting, but not what you expect, especially from a summer perfume. I've been wearing it for about 10 hours now, and I smell the last stage on my wrist. Sweet, maybe something fresh on top? What interesting to me is how this fragrance gives me the feeling of sunscreen - it doesn't smell coconutty, not at all. It's not your typical "sunscreen" fragrance. But it has the chalky backdrop that sunscreen has, sweetened with benzoin - a little spicy, a little resinous, and very much like stones and minerals that have been heated in the warm summer SUN :)

Pimpernell

One of the very few fragrances that gives me a headache.

thesheppardess

This is what I pick up from this fragrance - fruit, oud, much amber, heliotrope. It does not strike me as a scent I could wear in summer. This is too challenging for me to get on with.

chocolat

I have just tested this fragrance, and to my surprise my first reaction was that I knew this scent. From one small spritz on the back of my palm I shoul say the fragrance has a projection power.
Having owned Prada Infusion d'Iris I find Sun as a concentrated and a bit sweeter version of Infusion d'Iris. They share notes, as it is listed, and even share projection power, in their respective ways. I also use a current version of Dove anti-perspiring deodorant and the two with Sun make a perfect pair.
I have to try this fragrance few more times in different weather. Today the weather was cloudy, windy and with a low humidity, a before-the-rain-starts afternoon, and I found the fragrance a bit push-y, but I do like it overall. It has a good amount of sweetness on a creamy-tart base, which is something I like a lot and have very few such fragrances to use.
Definitely something to at least try.

snoopyQ

Jil Sander SUN is a little bipolar for me.

The first spray i find very ineresting, some flowery-vanilla- benzoin scent that does evoke a sunscreen- like scent but sweeter.
I really enjoy this stage.

BUT
...then it turns into a talcum-powder.

Hmmm....I still like it but It is not really a sunshine-in-a- bottle- type of scent for me

GrandmaGaga

This, to my nose, is extremely powdery. It reminds me too much of baby powder which, though not unpleasant, is not a perfumey smell for me.

Sade800

This a very clever perfume

Smells just like being on holiday!!

I layer it with Jil Sander Sun Rise and it works great.

A waiter once told me that I was making him want to book a holiday ha ha!

It evokes wonderful feelings of being holiday without a care in the world.

UnearthlyApothecary

Sun is a benzoin BOMB, if you love it you will adore this if not, you won’t be able to stand it. Sun is creamy, warm and slightly sweet like an expensive lotion. Incredible longevity but very close to the skin. This is a great every day summer scent, that has a warm feel instead of your typical fresh/aquatic, very special and unique but won’t be for everyone!

nitschevo

Sprayed this today for the sake of nostalgia and what a surprise it is! I think they must have changed the formular a little. It's not that full and warm anymore. For most this might be a good thing, because boy this was powerful stuff! Everyone and their mother were happily spraying away :D The dry down is even a little masculine with a fresh undertone to it! Could definitely be something for guys as well :)
As others have mentioned due to the name we conjure up something that's most likely not there - sunscreen. Sun is powdery, musky vanilla with a dash of fresh citrus and plenty of wood. Still relevant, I'd say.

Germanblonde

I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE Sun. It truly is summer in a bottle and draws a lot of compliments. But I am partial. Jil Sander and Guerlain are my favorite fragrance houses, and Sun is my favorite Jil Sander frag and my signature fragrance. When wearing her a beautiful sunny day on a beach comes to mind, a woman wearing a long, white, laced bohemian dress, walking barefoot in the sand, the wind playing with her long, blonde hair - that is Sun to the T. Perfect for a beautiful bride at a beach wedding. Not a perfume for hot summer days, but days that are warm, beautiful with lots of warm wind, the sun spreading rays glowing with an orange tint rather than a bright yellow. A great fragrance for the month of August and early September days. Not a crisp or fresh summer fragrance, but one with a romantic, nostalgic feel to it. When I wear Sun, my man can't keep from burying his head in my hair when we snuggle up. You will receive a lot of kisses wearing this beauty. Sun gets us in a romantic mood way faster than any other fragrance I own (and I own over a 100 frags).

I have enough back up bottles of Sun to last me for a long, long time, because if I should ever be out of this beauty with no way to re-purchase, I will pull out my hair in misery.

If I were stranded on an island and allowed to have only one fragrance with me, it would be her. She is so me, so feminine, and so comforting. I could go on and on raving about this beauty. She is my absolute favorite. Me and Sun will be a love affair with no end in sight.

PS: I am sure it is as lovely on brunettes, redheads or short haired gals. To me it just has a feel that it fits to the T on a longhaired blonde. And my hair is not that long, either. It is just a visual perception that comes to mind when I smell this lovely summer scent.

On another note: What in the world is an old lady's perfume? I loved this fragrance when I was 24, the year it was created, and I surely was not an old lady then, and I still love it now, and I do not consider myself an old lady at age 52. How about calling it a mature fragrance, or a fragrance for a mature women, if you feel that way. I think it's timeless and fits to any age.

chimidoro

Unique!

Fruity HUBBA BUBBA!
(Not trying to sexualize it with the HUBBAS - I'm referring to HUBBA BUBBA bubblegum!! No particular flavor in mind, however, definitely fruity, possibly those with a gooey middle?)

I want to chew on my wrist.

Starts fruity and bubblegum like, takes a creamy and uniquely bizarre floral twist as it dries down, has a strange smokey (the tobacco leaf?!) muskiness, with a medicinal (ointment like, possibly germolene) character.

HUBBA BUBBA, GERMOLENE, ALIEN (not Mugler) FLOWERS, SEASIDE (MIXED FLAVORS OF) FUDGE, MARZIPAN AND MUSK.

Impressive longevity, with stable (but subtle) projection.

Dorange Sense

An all time classic I believe, and classy too☝️
It will always and forever be the scent of a good friend! I sniffed the yet unknown Sun at the drugstore, and there it was: A holo of my mate. On her it is a mature cherry(?) perfume with hot spice. Really sensual but not "sunny" or anything, more like for wearing after dawn.
I was churned be the miles between the concept of the scent and the scent itself, you have to quite step back in order to get both in front of the camera: Huge as stand alones but also Sun and Moon.

123velvetrose

Peaches and cream, straight up sun tan lotion. I love that the bottle also looks like a bottle of sun block, very fitting. Its long lasting and absolutely charming. It was a lot nicer than my expectations. You cannot go wrong with the price on this one. You could layer this with actual sun block on a nice hot day. Lovely!!!

derkargy

A weird smell of synthetic vanilla, clashed with indifferent heliotrope and sultry benzoin-ylang ylang and sandalwood mixture.Such a throbbing headache!
Unfotrunately, many people think that Sun is the epitome of the real summer mood!Nothing sunny, nothing boozy in this juice, even the -so called-solar notes tend to be obscure.
Sorry for Sun lovers.

pommegom

It' more like Jil Sander - Great-grandma. Big nope.

Daisydukes

Between the notes and the positive reviews I figured this one would be a good blind buy for me. I was really wrong. It smells nothing like I expected. If you are attracted to the descriptions of "beach" , "summer" or "suntan lotion" I would be sure to try before you buy.

I personally dislike Sun but it doesn't exactly smell bad. To me it smells something like a candle or a room spray. I've been testing it for over a week, willing myself to like it. I will hold on to it and see if it's more enjoyable in the winter. It's very hot this week so it's possible that weather is a factor.

Smile4thecamera has the best review on this one IMO. I agree with her 100%.

I'd also caution the allergy sensitive to be careful with this one. I'm not often allergic to fragrances but this one is a screechy choker on me.

I agree with the "chemical soup" reference. It makes me think of a public restroom air freshener or a cleaning product. I suspect I could enjoy this on someone else but it's very strong and sneezy on my own skin.

Some may say it it's well blended- I'd agree in that I cannot discern what I'm smelling. My nose reads it as a "perfume-y" and strong. It doesn't smell dirty or indolic. Every once in a while I can smell suntan lotion in the drydown but I have to suffer to get to that point. This one is a "buyer beware".

Just an update- this is a really heavy hitter. Quite long lasting and I think it smells a bit like incense. I had to shower it off because it was triggering a migraine.

It does not smell like Arden's "sunflowers" but I could see someone liking both. I dislike both. If I keep testing this one I fear I may hate it or develop a migraine.

I haven't written a review in a very long time but this one is such a harsh dissapointment I wanted to let others know it's not a very safe blind buy.

polly golightly

Today I'm wearing Jil Sander Sun.
Immediately after spraying, I am surrounded by a creamy essence that is richer than just "perfume." It's soft and light and delicate and decadent. The top 3 voted notes are benzoin, vanilla, and ylang ylang, and this is exactly what carries this perfume from beginning to end. It's a soft resin-based cream that doesn't definitively highlight any of the notes.

I sprayed 4 sprays of this today, because personally I find it incredibly beautiful, understated, and unoffensive. I don't regret it. Even in the small music room where I was teaching, I did not have a problem with overwhelming silage. This one stays moderate in silage, but the longevity is fantastic.

Shortly after spraying (maybe 15 minutes or so), I get the citrus and orris root. This is a bit of an edge to what would otherwise simply be a nice high-end lotion scent. Overall, this is just a splendidly blended scent where all notes work together.

Unlike other JS scents, this one really camouflages a lot of the notes so that I cannot so easily distinguish every individual note. Instead, I get a "sense" of each note listed. I can go down the list and say, "yeah, I can see where that might be present." But it would not be so distinguishable to my nose alone. Sandalwood is the exception. It dries down into that lovely sandalwood note that really carries this to a sophisticated level.

I wish that more people would give Jil Sander scents a chance. These are not bold, overly stimulating scents. These are carefully crafted and subtle scents that develop elegantly and gracefully. They do not shout out. They won't be noticed a lot, but those near you will just tell you that you smell "good." These are fragrances for those who don't need a fragrance to identify them or give them confidence, but use that fragrance as an extension of their own personality and as an olfactory journey they can take for the day.

The more I investigate these, the more I truly see the genius in the house.

Anywho

Oh, what warm, sweet (slightly bubblegummy)summery delight! I haven't smelled Sun in decades and just opened my sample I got gifted by a lovely Fragrantican and am walking on memory lane...smells exactly the way I remember it. It caresses you with its sweet warmth and puts a spring in your step. Holiday in a bottle.

TexBex

I agree with originaldeftom when he says Jil Sander's Sun is summer in a bottle, and that it's impossible to imagine a better summer scent. nettoyant is also spot on: "This perfume smells like dried salty ocean water, suntanned skin and suntanning cream". This one is for all the sun goddesses out there, you know who you are, the Brigitte Bardot's of the world who have a love affair with the Sun, and need him nearby to stay in harmony. The suns plays a major part in my life and makes me happy (since I live to have fun, not to worry about wrinkles or fear skin cancer). Le soleil est mon petit copain <3 If this perfume was music it would be breezy sixties bossa nova.

nettoyant

This is so unique, creamy, powdery, slightly musky and rich. I'm not going to go into the notes except to say it's resinous but fresh. Much like Prada L'eau Ambree (another unique and amazing scent) but it doesn't smell like the Prada, it just has the same sort of feel.

This smells like a high end sun cream that has mostly been sweated and worn off after all day sun tanning and swimming. I baked in the sun through my 20s and anyone else who did knows that your skin has a very specific scent afterward. This perfume smells like dried salty ocean water, suntanned skin and sun tanning cream. And, it's spectacular!

blake.lee

I'm loving this perfume but there's nothing summery or beachy about this fragrance. It's soft warm, powdery and slightly spicy. It's smells like a high end face cream. If I could rename it, I'd steal the name Cashmere Glow from bath and body works. Come to think of it, it's in the same scent family as Cashmere Glow.

tandaina

Well this is really nice. I really and truly smells like warm sun on skin. Simple as that. Not the sun tan lotion, just the warm sweetness of your skin on a day when you've been out in the sun. I quite like it. It's creamy and smooth and not overwhelming. Testing it on a pretty cool day and it's a lovely reminder of what summer can be like. This might be a great winter pick me up for me.

ggabriella

LOVE LOVE LOVE. I cannot believe I missed it for so long. It's happiness in a bottle. Defo will be good good friends. Haven't been so excited about a fragrance since Joop. :)

Namarie

it is interesting scent.. opening some fake plastic notes but it turns good sun cream smell in 10 min. in good way.. i like it best for summer.

Madrona

Smells like a wooden cupboard where I grew up. It houses nail polish, napkins, (unscented) candles, suntan lotion, old jars of vaseline, perfume minis, a bit of jewelry and other random things belonging to my mom. I don't think it has been cleaned out since the early 90's. Nice and homely.

sasana

I really love this fragrance. My friend had it in the 90s and I loved it on her but never got it myself. Now I finally bought it for myself, 20 years later :)
It's so lovely, it reminds me of a day on the beach.
Or when it dries down, it smells like expensive body powder which a 1950s Hollywood star would have used.
Perfect for the summer!

starshining73

Per me è il profumo dell'estate, ma lo amo talmente tanto da usarlo sempre.
Dolce, cremoso, fiorito, morbido... ti accompagna come una carezza.

kimpoels

This one is all about the memories. It was a musthave when you're an eighties girl (like I am). Everyone at highschool had it. Everyone except for me, because all the popular skinny girls had it, so I didn't and that was that. Ten years later I really began to appreciate the scent itself. Because of the warm, slightly sweet feeling I get from it, but also a reminder of the lingering scent in the hallways of my school. It was a very carefree stage in my life (mainly homework and boyfriends) and Sun brings me back to that place. Love it.

PerfumeKing14

i smelt this today & I'm already amazed by how much i like this. having never smelt it before but heard good things i saw it & grabbed a bottle to test, sprayed the back of my hand i walked round the shop & couldn't stop sniffing my hand, sweet, musky, fruity vanilla scent, it's incredible. bought 2 bottles on the spot.

11Eňka11

I liked this one in winter, when it was freezing, to me its a perfume which makes me feel warm. For summer its too heavy, and it is very long lasting.

Dufteren

It took me 10 minutes from trying it from a sample, to ordering a full bottle. Do I need to say more?

This is not a traditional sumer scent as we know them today, it has somehow been decided, that summer scent are supposed to be either aquatic or sitrocy, which is nice enough, but not really somthing that appeals to me. Sun by Jil Sander is more my cup of tea, a suntanlotion type of scent without the typical coconut ingredient. This is how you smell after taking a shower, all the sand from the beach has been washed away, your skin is sore and sunkissed, so you smear you self with a creamy skin lotion, and voila..... you smell like summer.

HanneDB

It gives a wonderful feeling, it feels like warm sunshine on your body with a specially but a so good smelling sun lotion!
I still love it!
So soft and creamy! But also unique...
Let the summer begin!

Charess

I don't know what it is with this one. Based on the notes i should like it but i acctually don't. I mean it is a beautiful fragrance but just not my style. It's very powdery and woody. The vanilla is nice and soft. It's also kinda sweet. But it doesn't have the freshness i like. I miss a fruity of a floral note.

But if you are into woody, soft powdery scents you will definetely like this perfume!

racb

A mess of an over complicated, over strong cheap smelling perfume.

Starts with an intensive powdery creamy spritz exactly like sun cream. After a few minutes the floral notes start to come to the forefront, and then the creamy vanilla. I don't particularly like any one note and together they are discordant and way too busy.

It's a perfume that tries too many different openings one after the other and then quickly settles into a one note cloying vanilla nothing.

Not for me.

drugstore classics

Bright orange blossom and coconut oil. <3

Actually, SUN reminds me strongly of traditional orange blossoms like Oranger en Fleur, with a touch of Monoi oil added. Lovely... but different! The given accords don't quite square with what I'm smelling, and yet it's so good I don't mind. The other notes listed merely support the coconut and orange blossom, invisibly rounding out the composition.

This can present a soapy image, especially in the opening, but becomes softer, sweeter, and subtler as the day progresses. Good longevity with moderate to light sillage after the initial spray.

Sun is Terrific Value, a potentially addictive substance!

Basteth

I positivly adore this scent. It doesn´t evoke memories of the beach but definately of summer. To me, a "beachy" scent would have to be more aquatic and salty since I usually only bade in salt water.

But this! All cotton, vanilla, coconut and a bit of citrus. I also get a hint of haven in here, witch to me evokes pics of glowing yellow fields in summer and picnics in the country side.

I actually like the bottle as well, mainly beacus it is so totally different from all those pretty glass bottles that you usually see on the perfume counter.

All in all: this is gold for the price!

Nomen

I really don't get all the body lotion, soft, summery and other understating adjectives, descripting this fragrance. I do, however, understand what its campaign suggests regarding the bottle design and its name - I have eyes, but I also have a nose, and mine tells me that this is a mighty, spicy beast here! So, don't be fooled by the visual presentation, kids, we're talking fragrances here! And this one is a full bodied, loud, almost sharp vanilla. Would you ever call good ol' Addict a beach scent? Well, this one is not far from it in terms of power, sillage and overall impression. I know, the magic of presentation... But if you give Sun a chance and forget for a moment the plain, subdued bottle it comes in, and the mockery of a price, you could be able to sense its whole glory and rich composition. Please, do not wear this to a beach. Or do - and see for yourself if it really belongs there.

lirael00

woooow, I'm totaly in love with this one. Such a high quality perfume for such a low price. It's a perfect combo of benzoin, vanilla and amber. Moderate lasting power and sillage. If you like warm, sunnny, carefree fragrances get this sunshine in a bottle.

cvrlemicabeka

I don`t know what to write about this one, except PERFECTION. I need to have it always.
Don`t judge by first 10 minutes, let it develop it`s such wonderful scent. I could never tell what the notes are in this one, it`s just warm and cozy and perfect for all year round.
I do own and like Bronze Goddess, but Sun is even better, to me anyway <3

febeleuteria

This fragrance is so nice. . . to bad that it just does not work with my chemistry, giving me a nasty smell! LOL! I had to pass it on, I just couldn't wear it.

hedward

Things I love:
- Suntan lotion smell/Beachy scents
- Nivea cream smell
- Benzoin (Jaipur, Body Kouros, Pi, Midnight in Paris)
- Scents that evoke warmth and coziness
- Sun

I mean what could go wrong? Sun should be the absolute crownpiece to my oriental benzoin obsession. So I cheaply bought it blind. Well.. I really never knew what "had to scrub it off" meant because no scent has ever made me SO nauseous I would've needed to get rid of it. A few come close but Sun is by far the worst.

A synthetic, sharp and chemical stench reminescent of the headache inducing fumes that I need to endure during my chemistry lab courses at the university. To me this was bitter and inhumane. Oh wait there's one aspect that reminds me of summer: Sun smells like a bathsuit. In other words - nylon. Really I dont get the hype behind this.

Jitterbug Perfume Lover

I live near the beach, and there are a handful of fragrances that are as essential to me as the perfect swimsuit and this is one of them.

It smells like it was inspired by Bain de Soleil Orange Gelee lotion, which is a huge compliment. It smells like soft but not super sweet vanilla and orange, and warm sunshine on skin. I love this!

missjackie

Summer in a bottle, I like!
In the beginning the smell is kind of sharp, not really a fan of that. But the drydown is very lovely, sweet and summery. The longevity is quite good too! A nice one for summer days.

6FeetOver

Sun opened with promising citrusy and fresh powdery notes, which were lovely. As it dried down, though, I kept getting whiffs of something slightly off-putting, a bit metallic, and a little disturbing, but that I couldn't put my finger on. ("No...it's not suntan lotion...what IS it?!")

After several hours of being severely weirded out, it dawned on me that what Sun reminds me of is the smell of that neon-colored zinc from the 1980s. I don't know if that stuff even contained fragrance, but something about Sun takes me right back to summer in the '80s (specifically, family vacations in Ocean City, MD). Really odd...

smile4thecamera

Sun is such a heavy heliotrope/vanilla on my skin that I cannot imagine wearing this in the summer. It's heavy, it's sweet and powdery and really seems like chemical soup in the end. Unfortunately none of the other notes stepped forward on me. I'm completely down with beachy scents - love them in fact, but this one is a real disappointment.

miZZpuRRfect

Oh indeed? Well then i m sorry. ;) i think the review sounds weird to me, as she was reviewing another scent.

miZZpuRRfect

StinkySally seems to be very confused with her review since i m doubting very hard lancaster would put in a lancaster coffret a sander perfume?!

now for sun by sander which one is up to review her, i can tell u that since years this is my all time fabe summer splash fragrance. Potent, juicy sweet and sunny uplifting scent in the most delicious yet playful and sexy way. Nothing can beat it. For sunbath i have the non alcohol version too. I hope they will N E V E R discontinnue this as long i live.....

StinkySally

This is based on a mini included in a Lancaster coffret.

After an initial nose-harassing sharp note (I'm thinking it must be the lime, which makes me go "Eooow" every time), it's settled, after 15-30 minutes, into a precise heliotrope-vanilla blend. I recognized the heliotrope from L'Heure Bleu.

Not sure I'll get a bigger size, but it's pleasant enough. Think I'll stick with L-Heure Bleu since it is richer and deeper and has that mollifying iris note.

Sniezel

Sun is not just a perfect summer fragrance, it can be worn all year long. It's a warm, balsamic and powdery scent, weirdly enough I don't get much of the vanilla note. To me it smells more like a powdery sunscreen, and however sunny and beachy that sounds, I really like wearing Sun in cold weather too. I've only discovered this one about a year and a half back but it was love at first sight and I will be wearing this one for many more years.

Esthertje255

I bought this today. On the paper strip in the perfume shop it smelled kind of fresh and I read really positive reviews so i bought it.
Now that it has dried down, I'm trying to still like it but I just can't.
I get really nauseous because it's extremely sweet. I can't help but think of old ladies wearing cheap old-fashioned perfume.
Maybe I should have tried it during summer but I don't think I will like this when temperatures are higher.
Though I tried really hard, I can't get the association with sun/summer/beach.
It wasn't expensive but I still think it was a waste of my money.

Bollen

I really need to buy this again when spring/summer comes! A more perfect summerfragrance than this is hard to find. Perhaps not entierly surprising, the name "Sun" kinda says it all...

This perfume smells like warm sand, suntanlotion, dripping vanilla icecream and happiness. It´s a bit sharp at first but soon dries down to smell like you´ve just come home from a day at the beach.(In a good way!) It blends with your skin so that you still smell like you, or rather an enhanced delicious and sunkissed summerversion of yourself, does that sound wierd? :D

(It has a great longevity and just the right amount of sillage to!)

Can´t wait for summer!!!

vos

I loved the smell of jil sander sun when i was a teenager. But when i seriously started te collect perfumes the overal cheap and easy image of the fragrance did not apeal to me. No i collected classic cyphres and aimed to have niche fragrances. not that i did not buy cheap scents.. I have and liked some of those too. So now after comming full circle i have tried sun again and it is not cheap. Nor is it simple. Al first it does make me think of suntan lotion by association. Its the name that does it. But reading the notes makes me realise how complex and wonderful this creation is. It is also somewhat oriental and musky. Do not want to be without it anymore.

I spoke too soon...Upon using for the second time the amber note is what i dislike. Sprayed in the air and then walked through makes it more manageble.

Liberty_Fizz

Sniffed this today, going through my perfumes. Wow. I miss summer. France, hot beach, tide, gulls cry. Sun is hot, and this is like vanilla ice cream on my skin. Powdery, sticking to clothes. The occasional blast of citrus. In the evening I hang up my sundress. The creamy, spicy benzoin and vanilla linger.

Mari_on_net_te

I agree with The Sweedish Girl's review.

To me this fragrance is very herbal and sharp, no sign of the softness and warmth suggested by the notes given in the description.

First few minutes after spraying it smells just like a mosquito repellent; after warming up some, it gets very soapy. Not entirely unpleasent, but still a bit medicine-like.

I use it occasionally before going to sleep, but not too much. This soapiness isn't of a nice, just-got-out-of-a-lovely-bubble-bath kind. More like having a fresh duvet while curing a cold by rubbing some warming ointment into your chest.
Clean, yes. Cosy? No.
The only word from the description that actually fits is "balsamic", but otherwise it's herbal and that's it. No spicyness whatsoever.

The Swedish girl

I had such high hopes for this blind buy. But once again - epic fail.

Sun smells so very sharp, I would have guessed there was tuberose here, but no. Perhaps it`s the ylang ylang that creates this headache inducing sharpness.

Then there is this smell of melting vinyl, like a vinyl table cloth that was set on fire.

It DO smell a bit like soap, but not the good kind of soap. No, it smells lika a soap called "Bliw", which smells like the one you find in public restrooms. :-(

I don`t get any Nivea/coconut/vanilla/cosyness at all.

Sharp, harsh, piercing.

miss Trui

Yeeeah....Jil Sander Sun. My all time favorite. I love the smell of the fruit and soapy character. It's my signature...for sure!
