Testing blind, I get a fresh spring powdery musky blend, nice but subtle and soft. It initially has a hint of vanilla sweetness to me, and at times I feel like a get a leather base, but so barely it is probably a figment of my imagination. Now looking at the notes, or I guess singular note, l'm a little surprised, but then not surprised, orris is the only note. I can't say it is fleeting, as it does seem to stick around for a while, but at a very intimate level. It leaves a deeper, more earthy version of itself by the end of the day, but you are going to have to be intimate, quite intimate to know it's there. It's just too intimate and subtle for its price point. Like others from this house (I'm discovering) it's the fragrance for the days you don't want to wear fragrance. It subtly is your marker, maybe it's here.

this should be called figtattoo29. an initial blast of gorgeous plush grey orris unfortunately vacates within two minutes to make room for a generic philosykos flanker with its edges sanded away and its personality quirks removed.

unacceptably boring for the price, to me. nothing stands out here or makes any attempt to be distinctive or specific. I need at least a dash of narrative interest and this is a stock image, an olfactory nonplayer character. or maybe i just actually hate fig...

BaJu

Wow!!! Perhaps the most beautifull orris my nose has ever met! So elegant!

Received a sample of Orris Tattoo when I purchase Chypre Mojo in one of the stores in Paris last month. Upon first sniff on the store blotter, I loved this and found it sweet, woody and powdery.

On skin, I first pick up soapy green leaves and buds, followed by candied purple florals and sweet sap. It's fresh, but also powdery; sweet but also a bit sharp. Intriguing and different from my normal canon. I'm not sure it's full bottle worthy, but I could imagine a world where I bought a travel size (if they offered it!) to wear on some springtime vacation.

On my "like" scale of 1<5, this is a 3.

Do you know how Byredo mixes Violets, Mimosa and Ambroxan together, yet has an woody-floral-aquatic aura? Then you will understand that Orris Tattoo is composed the same way. Iris/Orris might be just as well in the pyramid as Watermelon and Powdery notes, but as a lover of Iris/Orris I am not thrilled. But it is a solid LIKE overall.

I've always had a soft spot for Diptyque Philosykos, but an off-putting green, bitter note didn't quite mesh with my skin.
A gifted sample of the scented lotion last year, however, won my heart. I vowed that if I could find a similar fragrance, I'd make it my signature scent, and Orris Tattoo 29 is precisely that for me.

A very purple scent. Definitely a clean, soapy, powdery and even a little bit fruity iris. When I smell it, all I see is purple. It's a little too clean for me, unfortunately. I was imagining something darker and earthier. I don't find it earthy at all.

MommaIssy

I purchased a sample of Orris Tattoo from Scent Split. LOVE AT FIRST SNIFF! This fragrance is so simple, so delicate and so comforting. It's powdery with hints of Iris. Definitely a scent that makes you think of a luxury hotel or spa. I'm saving for a full bottle.

Tembacat

Dreamy is how I would describe this. Like I'm floating on a soft, creamy floral cloud. Definitely holding on to this one for spring.

rayofthesun88

I think "tattoo" in the name is off-putting, which is such a shame because this is a gorgeous scent. There's nothing tattoo-related at all here. This smells so much like Philosykos, which is pure fig, and this is supposed to be pure orris. I'm not really sure how that happens.

NinaRJ

I love Orris tattoo! Similar to Iris de Nuit, but I like this better.

LouieEtCamille

My new signature scent for spring/summer. There is something effortlessly cool about Orris Tattoo. It transports me to Laguna Beach, CA. I detect a fig leaf/luxurious lotion-y skin/earthy-yet-clean scent.
Compared to Parisian Musc, Orris Tattoo is more natural, introverted and transparent due to the absence of ambroxan. Personally I prefer Orris Tattoo.

The fantastic review by @waldoseye tells you everything you need to know about this scent!

taurusenergy

Such a dreamy, fresh, relaxing scent. It smells really realistic and high quality. Nothing sharp about it. I really love it, but I wish it projected more though -- even when over-spraying I hardly smell it on myself. Not full bottle worthy for that reason, but I'll enjoy the decant.

Vonette

I like this but don't get a lot of orris out of it. More kind of a powdery violet perfume. I will say that my smell is a bit distorted due to having a cold. This reminds me of Etoile Celeste but without the muskiness. EC is a very nice, safe, comforting scent. This one is too

RAOqwerty

More than orris, this is a violet fragrance.

funnycolorliquid

I like this perfume. I just feel like once I wear it, I get a bit tired of it. I'd say this leans a teeny bit masculine. Very casual. This is for that guy that rides a motorcycle in the summer, black shades, long hair, just has that appeal. Buttery, and cozy.

Scabiosa

I love orris, i love powdery scents...and i'm still on the way to find my pressure scent, because everything from this family turns out on me screaming sweet with very strong sillage. Particularly Orris Tattoo on me has nothing to do with tattoos sadly (i own some myself and that is why was so intrigued by the name). It is a loud gorgeous iris lipstick on the red carpet holding hands with Nun from Laboratorio Olfattivo, since for me they have the same oompf "expensive cosmetics" mood. I smelled both on other people and loved it so much! It was fresh, airy and hugging. An i'm just left with suffocating sweet lipstick again. Oh boy, anyways, i love to spray it on clothes and enjoy at least like that.

Lilli95

Nice iris/orris intimare scent. Very smooth and lux smelling to me. Not so buttery to me. This is very similar to Gris Charnel I think, but colder. Grey cashmere jumper in winter.

markvel

I also bought this impulsively 😄😄
It's a really lovely everyday scent for me. It's a little bit reserved and cold but I love it!
To my nose this have that lactonic creamy buttery smell which I love.
Also there is no way that there is no heliotrope here since in the dry-down all I can smell is heliotrope.
Longevity is fine but sillage could be better
It's very versatile so it's a prefect scent for jeans and a white t-shirt but also it can be night formal scent.

insolencia

i impulsively bought orris tattoo after smelling the sample. i think it smells 80% like santal blanc from van cleef without the dense milky/lactonic part that makes me nauseous. It's very nice on my skin making it very powdery. 8.3/10!

Heiroppo

This has something horribly bitter and sharp in it. If I try to ignore that aspect, it is a very pretty, slightly lipstick, orris scent but can't really tell the intended result due to the above.

muzzbait

I get an equal pairing of fig and orris in this...
I am not a fan of fig in ANY capacity, so this was doomed from the beginning, but it was not disappointing in any way.
The orris was nice and chewy, quite earthy and play-doughy, but still, the fig ruined it for me.
I wonder why fig isn't listed in the ingredients here at fragrantica...?

MCCooper

I have a full bottle of this perfume and honestly, I love it. It's a great day to day perfume, and sits snugly on the skin truly like a tattoo. Having said that, floral/powdery scents do work best with my skin and I enjoy the intimate sillage of this for daily use. It's not however, what I would turn to for a going out perfume as it's pretty casual and not much of a head-turner. As I said, the sillage is quite intimate and the scent doesn't last forever - this is a great perfume for feeling super fresh and clean smelling in the morning, also would probably perform well as a post-gym fresh and clean scent if you're interested in something without super green or aquatic notes.

For those purposes I'd rate it an 8.5/10. Parle Moi de Parfum has an array of other incredible scents that I would turn to first for a night out, a lush summer fragrance or a date night perfume. I would turn to Mile High 38 or Chyphre Mojo 45 for those occasions with scents from this house. Enjoy, and happy sniffing!

S.kekkonen

Blew through a sample of this trying to figure this scent out, it's really interesting and I like it but not enough to want a full bottle. Definitely something different for me and after smelling this over and over I feel like I have an easier time picking out the orris note in other fragrances. To my nose this smells earthy, buttery and doughy. It a soft and comforting fragrance that wears close to the skin on me.

MaxillaryMary

For me, this is a very doughy scent. A little lipsticky. It starts out lightly sweetened, but dries down more doughy. It is a very close sitting skin scent, and very unisex. It isn't fun, it is elegant and reserved.

Not my favorite iris out there. But I'm sure there is a demographic that this is the perfect scent for them, I'm just not it.

I’m a bit bummed out that i didn’t pick up any of the 500 different unique notes the other reviewers here did. For me this is a very one note scent, albeit a complex note-the orris root. I’m not getting anything else like fruit or wood. If anything, I’d say it seems to have iris flower in it as well, giving it a soft sweet syrupy vintage iris/orris floral vibe. More powdery when it dries down, more syrupy when freshly sprayed. Not for everyone. A true expensive skin scent. Not a projector but it certainly sticks around for awhile. It smells rich. It just doesn’t strike me as the most sexy scent, more of a status symbol than an aphrodisiac. I’d rather have a sexy scent than a rich one, personally. This seems to be a clean and modern unisex reimagining of more classic iris/orris scents. I tried Jo Malones Orris and Sandalwood prior to this. Jo Malone was more sweet, syrupy, vintage flower perfumy. This is lighter, fresher, cleaner, and would work with more ages and genders. I bought this because I wanted to know if orris was *the* scent I’ve been chasing, as I wasn’t super familiar with what it was supposed to smell like, even though it’s in a few perfumes I own and one perfume I love. I immediately recognized the orris upon smelling this and was able to identify that note in other fragrances instantly. However, it isn’t *the* note I’ve been chasing. It’s nice, and I will take it for a spin from time to time, but I don’t see it being a signature scent. I’d say this is a must have for perfume nuts who want a diverse collection, though it doesn’t perform well enough to layer without other scents taking it over and it’s more of a personal scent.

silthrill

pas pour moi, I'll pass on this one. There is some orris in there but to my nose there seems to be some sort of tropical vibes. Another reviewer noted banana peels - to me it's something along the lines of a tropical scented sunscreen? Very faint but definitely there. If you're looking for a hybrid between a sunscreen scent and a skin-scent, this is a good option.

vbradford

Does this smell like banana peels to anyone else?

StephBaby

It’s so beautiful and easily became my current signature scent. Buttery, cozy, and enchanting. It’s green but I imagine a forest on another planet. There’s something otherworldly about it to me.

barry1052

I can smell the fig
Don’t know why it reminds me of Parisian musc

xvxmatthewxvx

Slightly minty coconut marzipan
I got complimented by 3 different people when I wore it
3-4 sprays medium to strong projection

Fidah_

Not complex but very comforting and a breezy cold iris. I absolutely love this and becoming one of my favourites. If anyone has an unwanted bottle of this then please message me. I need all the backup bottles of this!

Mangaetteok

Iris and orris - different notes.
Orris is from the rhizomes of the roots of the plant, iris is usually from the main root; something like that; I went to college with a botanist, studying other sciences, & she knew such things..

waldoseye

I really love this one but you have to know what you're getting into. This is a very soft transparent fragrance. Even more so than en extremely light summer citrus. This is verging into "molecule fragrances" like the molecule series.

So perhaps if you were looking for a molecule fragrance but actually wanted more than a single chemical, you can count on the orris root. Orris root has this quality of being extremely delicate and transparent and yet still managing to capture an unimaginable number of facets; green floral, leather, podwer, earthy, creamy, air, wetness, dryness... it goes on and on

Others will think you emanate a fantastic natural smell from your pores, and might not even recognize it as a perfume per se. Just your clean smell. But this clean smell hides all the nuances I mentioned above. Not carroty. Not cosmetics. Here silky and green elements are highlighted. Here I MUST emphasize the heavy presence of what smells like fig leaf to my nose.

I will warn others that this is to my nose more feminine. It could be unisex of course but let me put it this way; This is like a way more delicate smooth and mildly more feminine Dyptique phylosikos.

@jae & @cocofluff’s review capture my feelings towards this. It’s just wonderful. I love it. FBW for me.

bluesunshine

On my quest for my ultimate iris &/or Orris fragrance...I'm sampling Orris Tattoo...This is a lovely take on Iris.
Opening notes of violet & fig leaf leading into a doughy orris note. I definitely pick up a hefty dose of iso super E in this one well in to the mid & dry-down.

Another reviewer noted a Grey Flannel comparison & I can totally see this being a more refined version. I did get a compliment from mom. It's lovely but not something I have to have a full bottle of. 7/10

Cherry_Darling

This smells of fig leaves to me, a rather green take on orris. Soft, feminine, (ivy?) and green. Not really powdery, or sour, very fresh too.

Getting cocobello vibes - might be palmleaves I smell. Green and earthy.

PerfumedParrot

It’s ok. Not my favourite iris (Splendiris and Iris De Nuit are better) but it’s fine if you don’t mind reserved and distant.

giakerr

The orris is so buttery smooth, rich, and cool feeling in Orris Tattoo. I might be in the minority here, but there’s nothing carroty or earthy about this to me- it’s more of a high end cosmetics- type orris. I’m also getting lots of sweet violet and... almond? Call me crazy, but I smell almond or heliotrope in there. It’s a beautifully creamy, powdery, lightly sweet skin scent. Like applying a luxurious body butter over cleanly shaven skin, and putting on a fluffy, downy bath robe that faintly smells of violets. It “feels” like grayish purple satin to me. I really, really love this.

cocofluff

- Opens with a huge dose of orris, followed by sandalwood and papyrus or maybe carrot. Smells like waxy lipstick and silky/lacy fabrics. It's a delight for the nose of those who enjoy these notes. It's earthy but never dirty if that makes sense. I do smell a bit of cumin in the drydown which is not a turn off for me; instead, it smells even more skin-like.

Drydown is a little warm and powdery. Definitely beautiful.

Reminds me of a better version of Tubereuse 1 La Capricieuse Histoires de Parfums.

@jae I love your review. Accurate.

EDIT I've been wearing my sample every day for the past week. I need a bottle because I LOVE this stuff! ❤️

I have always had a great love of orris root. It is much more multidimensional than the iris note, which can sometimes become a bit flat and powdery. However, orris is so wonderfully complex that it can easily stand alone as a subterranean soliflore.

This is by far the best and purest orris perfume I have found. Every facet of the note is explored: first, green earth, (something of the ripe freshness of cold red clay), powder, starch, carrot, then later, tight leather, butter, musk, dusty petals on skin. A true shape-shifter. The overall effect is unique, sophisticated, rich, and determined. This is not a "fun" perfume, but one of drive, contemplation, and quiet ease.

Utterly androgynous and ageless, but requires a certain ambiance and attitude of mind. All-season, and suitable for day or night.

Just marvelous.

Xua

In the beginning phase this reminds me of Diptyque's Philosykos. Must be the fig. And I think I can also detect coconut. Or is that just my brain telling me this because of the connection to Philosykos? Later the rooty and powedery notes develope more but the green fig continues to float along.

Br'eauDeCologne

The opening is incredible, a perfect marriage of buttery orris and violet.

Sadly ... the orris is very short-lived on me and I'm left with the violet; like a high-grade Gray Flannel that is just as long-lasting yet not quite as nuclear. I would like to have experienced more of the orris, given both the name of the fragrance and the price point.

LoneCamel

To my nose: It really is what it's called. Absolutely dominating buttery orris on top of a musky powdery vanilla combo that sits tight on the skin forever, like a tattoo. A nice cedar opens it up and it has a non intrusive powder and cold violet all the way through. Classy, pleasant, very clear and bright full of character but restrained in its simplicity. Minimalist, relaxing but meticulous day wear. Should be perfect for office. Leans more feminine. Mood: calmly optimistic, driven, focused.

Edit - Yes! as mentioned below, it's got something quite fig-like. The dry qualities of fig, not the fruitiness and very little of the earthiness.

savvyminx

Delicate, cool, smooth, like gliding your hand over a polished marble statue. Powdery, yet buttery orris, with a breath of sandalwood and a hint of soapy skin.

Classy and refined, if a touch fleeting.

Registeralloveragain

This smells very modern and pretty feminine. a lot of contemporary musk type notes, more musky than rooty or carrot like.

katerinaki

It is a new apocalypsis for my iris collection. It reminds me though on my skin the Eau de Narcisse Bleu by Hermès. It is easy to wear all day long but it remains the same, without remarkable evolution.

moreorlessa

I'm very surprised at the bad response to this fragrance here. I thought it was a high quality iris fragrance, showcasing it's botanical and carroty aspects rather then the lipstick smell some iris scents are reminiscent of. I would class this with Jo Malone Orris & Sandalwood and Artisan Parfumeur Violaceum. This one feels more minimalist and clean, more "white", in comparison.

HUEbris

It is almost soft fig-sandalwood, not iris

daiva.jameikis

Love it , long lasting . love iris and later this powdery wooden smell . Reminds me Santal 33

monkey500

This Orris Tattoo doesn’t really smell of much to be honest: there’s a sharp alcohol opening - reminiscent of one of those new artisanal gins with too many aromatics in the blend - and within 30 minutes it becomes a cold smelling floral skin scent.

Somewhat dull.

lgsoltek

The opening is actually quite nice: iris, violet... But the drydown is yet another harsh crassly woody amber as rude as manspreading. No thanks.
