If you’re just starting out in your career, chances are that you sometimes feel as if you’re languishing. When you’re languishing, you feel a lack of meaning and a desire to “fit in” emotionally. These three steps can help you stop languishing and start flourishing in your career.
- Set boundaries. This helps us maintain our time, energy, and emotions, and gives us the opportunity to reflect and plan for our future. Ask yourself: Where am I feeling resentment and frustration regarding my time and energy?
- Reflect on your path, success, and mission. Once you’ve set boundaries and made time for yourself, the next step is to reflect on your current path. How did you get here? What does success look like for you? What are the values that are most important to you right now?
- Craft your job. During your reflection, you may find a disconnect between what you want and your reality. That could be what’s causing your languishing. Although you could change jobs, there are steps you can take in your current job to stop languishing and get closer to the path you want. The key is job crafting, or proactively taking steps to improve your happiness at work.
