There is a common talk going around that children are immune. That is not at all true. Children catch the virus, children reproduce the virus, and children shed the virus and in so doing can infect other people easily. That they are not being ravaged by the disease is not the definition of immune. Immune means that they fight off the virus and kill it, not act as a petri dish to incubate and spread it.
Many hear that children are largely fine with SARS-CoV2. True. Many are. But that still leaves a fraction of a percent that are not. Some children will get serious complications and die. There are several hundred cases in the US at least at this time where the primary cause of death was CoViD19. The only difference is that children have a much lower risk of death. As for lifetime complications - we can’t assume they will be fine as there are roughly zero case histories of children that have had this for over a year. Simply put no body knows what happens to people of any age beyond a year, as this has never happened yet. To say otherwise is simply false.
For adults, it appears that there are significant complications that occur and are very likely to last a lifetime. This virus can cause neurological damage to the nerves and brain, and cardio damage to the heart. While medical experts can’t say this for certain, the damage that has been seen clinically is the type of damage they’ve seen that is not the type that one can recover from. Typical conditions include lung damage, heart damage, and nerve damage. It varies by patient, and the root damage causes a variety of conditions that vary with each patient. Roughly 20% of people that get seriously sick can recover, but will have conditions that may last a lifetime. Next time someone says “yea, but less than 1% die”, please remind them that more than 20% will survive and need medical attention for the rest of their lives, and this attention costs a lot of money and reduces quality of life for many more people than those who die. This is not so different than war casualties, where there are deaths, but many more who come back with terrible disabilities.
Studies have shown that children can harbor 10 times the number of virus in their respiratory system, mostly in the nasal areas. Studies also show that some children may have up to 100 times the viral load of an adult.
This is not new information but it seems important enough to repeat it as many people are misunderstanding or confused. Masks are not 100% effective at preventing the spread. Masks are certainly able to reduce the spread by 50 to 95 % of cases (depending on the study and it’s specifics). Masks are mostly effective for short duration contact with other people, such as in a checkout line, passing by on the street or hallway, where we may at most be exposed to other’s breath for seconds to a minute. There are many people who believe they will be safe with a mask on, but prolonged exposure in a confined space (usually indoors) will eventually have you exposed to their breath and it’s viral load. A half hour in a small room with little ventilation, or a car, or similar situations will lead to a significant risk for the people in contact. It’s like waving your finger through a candle flame. We can easily pass it through once or twice and hardly feel it. But if we keep our finger in the flame, well …you know what will happen.
