CHICAGO
Part 1

Chicago is no ordinary city. Buzzing with life, Frank Sinatra's "kind of town" is a surprising mix of Manhattan - the skyscraper was invented here and the city has some of the tallest buildings in the world - and Venice, with its vibrant labyrinth of waterways. It's also got its very own brand of quirkiness. In March the river is dyed green in honor of St. Patrick's Day - a charming gesture typical of this mid-western oasis. But most important of all - well, to me anyway - is that the TV show "ER" is shot and located here.
In summer, the beach-strewn location on Lake Michigan has the feel of a huge marina, with stereos blaring from private boats manned by bare-chested boys. In winter, you can ice-skate in the heart of downtown - Chicago's glamorous gesture at it's notoriously chilled weather. Don't worry though, it's called the Windy City because of its blustering politicians, not the weather. The only thing that blows you away here is good time.

I'd spent previous trips to America pussyfooting around its edges, where many of its least typical cities lie - Anglicized Boston and New york, Latino Miami, spaced-out Los Angeles. But Chicagoans are proud to represent classic America. "We may be overweight and badly dressed," grinned one local, "but we're down-to-earth, friendly and straight-dealing." So, if it's typical America you're looking for, you'll love Chicago - especially if you recognize yourself in any of the following descriptions...

SERIOUS SHOPAHOLIC
All Chicago's best shops are grouped on one long, fabulous street - North Michigan Avenue, known as the Magnificent Mile. There are mini versions of everything from Saks Fifth Avenue to Bloomingdale's here, as well as mainstream shops, such as Banana Republic and Nike Town, and more individual stores. Club Monaco is my favorite for gorgeous clothes in neutral colors. The groovier district of Wicker Park and Bucktown is a great hunting ground for retro interiors, Mexican art, funky records and clothing. It also does a fine line of hip bars and cafes.

BLUES SISTER
Coming to Chicago and not listening to blues music should be a criminal offence. Blue Chicago is a fun venue, which promotes female singers. Also check out Kingston Mines. Or if you fancy a hot ravioli dish and jazz, Green Dolphin Street - housed in a former auto repair shop - is a short taxi ride from the center.

BEACH QUEEN
Beach life is alive and well in Chicago with a collection of atmospheric little sand strips set against the surreal background of skyscrapers. In spring and summer, roller skaters mix with the people out on picnics and muscle-crazy Americans work through their hilarious fitness regimes. You can stroll along, dip or take cruises on Lake Michigan, which is so vast it looks like a horizonless sea.

FOOD
Chicago loves to eat - remember all those restaurants and mobile diners in the TV series ER? The city's diverse ethnic neighborhoods mean you can dine on everything from Luisiana southern- style food to Polish, Mexican or Swedish cuisine. And this could never have been Al Capone land if the Italian Community couldn't drum up a good pizza. In fact, at the famous Pizzeria Uno they have invented their own unique pizza with scrumptuous toppings. For dining with a view of the lake, you can't beat the Signature Room at the 95th. Wise-cracking waiters and wonderful sunsets were enough to take my mind off my fear of heights.

ARCHITECTURE FREAK
It's hard to escape jokes about big erections in this Mecca for design freaks. The city center is full of striking modernist skyscrapers, best viewed from the architectural river boat cruise. The view from the lakeside John Hancock Center probably beats that from Sears Tower - on a clear day, you can see for 50 miles over four states.

CULTURE MANIAC
The last thing I expected to see wandering all over Chicago's urban wonderland was a herd of cows in Hawaiian shirts. Luckily, these funny statues turned out to be part of a city-wide public art project. If you are looking for art, you will certainly enjoy the dramatic public sculptures from Miro to Chagall. Reserve at least one morning for the Art Institute of Chicago - it's stunning collection of Impressionists and Post-impressionists is one of the world's best and there are plenty of US classics too.

BIG KID
Chicago's a great place to monkey around in - even id you are way older than 10. The world's best preserved T-Rex will be on display for the first time at the Field Museum of Natural History. Next door at the Shed Aquarium you can see huge white beluga whales, dolphins and sea otters. Weary parents can distract their offspring in the fantastic music playroom at the Chicago Symphony Orchestra , which is so good you'll wish to join in!
