Cynthia Lennon's book, titled simply "John" is her memoir of life with and without her famous late ex-husband, John Lennon. To celebrate what would have been John's 50th birthday (on 9 October 1990) Cynthia agreed to lend her support to a major charity concert, with a rock symphony, to be performed in the US and televised around the world. The funds raised would be used to support charitable ventures in John's name.

 Cynthia writes:

 "By July, after six months of planning, the concert was shaping up brilliantly. I had meetings with both Rudolf Nureyev and Michael Jackson, who had agreed to dance together as one of the highlights of the evening. Star Wars producer George Lucas had agreed to do the special effects and other performers who were to appear including Ravi Shankar, the Moody Blues and, to our delight, Paul McCartney, who was to play with the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra, under the direction of George Martin.

 It was an enormous enterprise and I travelled all over Europe and the States, met German chancellor Wili Brandt and many others who wanted to help. I was even invited to the US Senate, and stood beside the Mayor of New York as the peace bell rang at the United Nations. As the concert took shape I felt one thing needed to seal its success and make it the perfect tribute to John: Yoko's endorsement..."

 However, as it turned out, Yoko had her own plans for a concert in John's memory... but it was a different affair than the one Cynthia had had in mind, and neither Michael nor Nureyev were a part of it.

 A host of artists performed, amongst them Ray Charles, Lenny Kravitz, Joe Cocker, Natalie Cole, Roberta Flack, Cyndi Lauper, Kylie Minogue, Lou Reed, Dave Stewart, Randy Travis, Terence Trent D'Arby and others.
 But as Michael Jackson fans, we can only wonder what memorable magic might have transpired from the collaboration of such diverse dance masters as Nureyev and Jackson."

Mr. Lee's stone-faced hosting style appeared out of sync with the jubilant atmosphere at Bedford Stuyvesant Restoration Plaza, where thousands of revelers gathered Sunday afternoon to celebrate what would have been Michael Jackson's 56th birthday.

At the party, titled "Brooklyn Loves MJ," Jackson's iconic music boomed for blocks around. In the neighborhood, passersby danced while carrying groceries. Residents of the apartments overlooking the plaza nodded their heads to the beat as they surveyed the scene from their balconies.

Mr. Lee strode through the crowd wearing an orange velveteen fedora (provided by Party City, which outfitted hundreds in free fedoras) and Nike Air Force One sneakers emblazoned with images of Jackson from the "Thriller" era. The sneakers said "Thriller" on the back.

.... In the crowd, Mr. Lee may have been the only person without a smile. Police officers bobbed their heads as they patrolled. Maintenance workers sang as they picked up litter. Two emergency medical technicians attempted to learn Jackson's moonwalk.

"We're on duty," said one of the medical technicians, "but when 'Thriller' comes on, you can't just stand there."
